Please say a prayer for Mollie. Her QT period is over and I was going to let her out but found her in respiratory distress with a very high temperature. We are hosing her now.
The weather here has been crazy – below freezing a couple of nights and now we’re back up over 80 in the days with the upcoming forecast going back down in the 40’s at nights. Mollie has a thick, unhealthy, and scruffy coat but I’m afraid to clip her. After she was alcoholed and hosed, her temperature went down from 104.1 to 100.5. Mollie’s immune system is greatly compromised and she barely hung onto life when she arrived at the rescue. She was so weak she had to live in a sling for the first few days. Her first chemistry panel/CBC taken the day she arrived, was not great – there were a lot of lows. Her chemistry panel/CBC this past week was better – and there were no indications of infection. Her appetite is good.
Mollie – you can see she didn’t feel well today.
This evening, she was feeling much better – good enough to try running around. She ran and made a quick turn and ended up on her butt – she has so very little muscle. But she held her head up high like an Arabian, got up, shook herself off, and trotted around a bit more. We’re keeping a close watch on her. This photo was taken the day we brought her to the rescue – we had to drag her into the trailer – she was too weak to stand. Once at the rescue, still in the trailer, the vet had a really hard time getting an IV catheter into Mollie to start fluids – we weren’t sure Mollie was going to make it. She was close, very close, to leaving us. Thank you all for your prayers.

Mollie is an Arabian filly, almost four years old, who has been neglected most of her life. She is very stunted but could possibly still grow for a couple of years. She’s doing better but still wears a look on her face at times, that says she isn’t feeling great. She tires easily. It’s going to take time for her body to heal. But she has never given up – no matter how bad she feels, there is light and hope in her eyes. Another little miracle who believes. By this evening she was much better. You can clearly see the Arabian in her.
Another orphan kitty was found in the paddock down by the main road tonight. It was hard to see in the dark, but fortunately, Bonnie has good ears! There was only one kitten, we hope.

Monday
Good morning! The vet is coming out to examine Solace – he has what appears to be a mild choke. He’s been getting soupy, really watered down mashes – he hasn’t been wanting to drink. He’s not coughing, which is good, but something is wrong. Mollie will also be checked out. Her temperature is slightly elevated. And we have a new arrival that I’ll share more about later today – I have to leave now as I have Dr. appointments in Gainesville. For those who don’t know Solace’s story, here is a link to his page, " It’s All About Solace". His survival is another miracle.
Dr. Lugo examined Solace’s teeth today and pulled one by hand that was loose. He also did x-rays. There is another tooth that is fractured. Dr. Lugo will be talking with our equine dentist, Dr. Bess Darrow, and we will go from there. So…lace is a grand old horse – 30+ years old and he doesn’t have many teeth left. He gets multiple mushy meals a day. He’s not underweight – he looks great. I’m so glad we are able to make his sunset years good ones!
The new arrival needs front feet x-rays and he has suspicious growths under his tail. It is the season for giving – we are giving him a chance at life. He’s of good weight but you can see in his eyes, that he is uncomfortable. We hope to change that. He’s our annual "Christmas Save". We have named him Santana – it means holy. It just came to me and it seems very appropriate.
Welcome to Beauty’s Haven Santana! Would anyone like to help give the Gift of Life to this sweet gelding? He will be needing x-rays today. He needs sponsors.
Santana was examined today by Dr. Lugo and x-rays were done of his front feet. Santana has navicular and some small tumors under his tail. Right now we are going to focus on building his immune system and getting him comfortable. A course of action for the navicular will be determined once Laura Castanos and Michelle Stepp, both DAEP’s of the Institute of Applied Equine Podiatry, review the x-rays with Dr. Lugo.

I know this is hard to see but it’s our tractor spreading winter rye seed! The seeding was donated and we certainly appreciate it! Now, we pray that the seed takes!

December 3rd to December 5th Update
Some have been asking about Betsy Rose’s court case. A few weeks ago, the case went to court and the person charged, pleaded, "not guilty." A public defender was appointed – the owner can afford to own another horse but can’t afford an attorney so the court appointed him one – likely paid by our tax dollars. I just checked and the case has been continued yet again.

A mini breakfast. They don’t really get much – a little forage so I don’t feel guilty for feeding the big horses. They savor every bite.
Mollie is doing well. The first photo was taken a few days after arrival and the next yesterday. She’s putting on some weight. Hopefully, she will soon get a much needed bath. We have extra volunteers coming! Mollie the first week.
We were told Mollie was a yearling before we picked her up. According to our vet’s, she’s between 3 to 4 years old. She’s likely been neglected most of her life – she’s pretty stunted.
An update on one of our precious rescues – Sierra (aka Sienna Rachel)! She looks great Jamie Coughlin! Y’all have done a great job with her!
It would be so wonderful if Morgan had her very own home for the holidays. She’s a sweet girl that deserves much more one on one attention then she gets here. Her Adoption fee will be lowered to $150 for a limited time!
Morgan is a 19yr old, black, morgan mare, approx 14.3 hands. She is VERY sweet and a great trail horse! She has recently come back to the rescue because her adoptive Mom is not well, but she had nothing but good things to say about Morgan. Morgan is now searching for her forever home. CJ is doing much better and is almost ready for a home. He has arthritis in his knees and will be adopted as a pasture pal. Would anyone like to apply to adopt him?
Chico and Lobo will be having visitors on Friday! Wouldn’t it be nice if they had their own home for the holidays?

Ceri got a MUCH needed bath today! A 15 year old Arabian mare still looking for a home!

An update on Baby Ray: after much discussion with the adoptive mom and Baby Ray’s care team, we have agreed that it would be in Baby Ray’s best interest to return to Florida. He has been monitored closely and his heart rate is still elevated – it is working harder to pump blood in the colder environment. When blood vessels constrict to preserve heat, the heart has to work harder to squeeze blood through narrow vessels. We don’t want to take a chance that it may be too much for Ray’s heart. We still don’t know what caused him to become sick but we all agree that his recovery was miraculous. And we all agree that we don’t want to take any chances. We know he will be in great hands coming home – Pamela Zarem will be transporting him back. She and her family will foster him for awhile. It’s much more calm at her house which would be better for Baby Ray. Here, there is much to get him excited about – horses running and playing. He will only be 15 minutes away. And he will have Tony the Donkey and Cherokee the Mini, as friends.

Mollie today. She got a couple of surprises yesterday!
Mollie got two presents!!! Karen sent her a darling little angel pony and Stop Animal Cruelty Worldwide gifted Mollie with a beautiful hand made blanket! Mollie feels very special! Thank you Karen and Stop Animal Cruelty Worldwide! Mollie is trying to think of the perfect name for her new friend – she’ll share it once she decides! Mollie got a present – a cute little pony with angel wings! Thank you Karen!

November 25th – 26th, 2013 Update
November 25th
Dayo is on board now with Pine Valley Acres Transport (http://www.pinevalleyacres.com/transportation.html) on his way home to his human Deborah Snow in Maryland. It was hard to see him off for the last time. We had to load him on Pam’s trailer and then she helped transfer him onto the transport trailer (it was too big to get to where Dayo was living) at another location. It was a wonderful experience to be able to help and work with Dayo until he could go home. My time with him will always be remembered and treasured. He is accepting human touch now even though he is unsure. He needs to be brave – his entire world is changing. God bless you Dayo! Thank you, Deborah, for giving him a home and a chance. And yes, I’m going to be a nervous wreck until he unloads and settles in his new home.
Dayo has come a long way. He’s a good boy. Not a mean bone in his body.
He will make a very nice horse – he has an Arabian mind and heart.
And he is accepting of human touch now. I miss him, already.
Boo is almost as big as her momma! Daisy’s tumors have started to grow again. Another type of chemo has been started. Please continue to pray for her recovery.
November 26th
Dayo is home! Thank God and Pine Valley!
Mollie and Dr. Julia today.
Mollies eyes are doing well. Her HR and RR are still elevated. Her blood work came back and it’s better. It was a mess last week. The IV catheter has been removed and she is done with her antibiotics. It’s hard to believe she’s at least 3 years old. She’s pretty stunted. Dr. Julia did some work on Mollie and she felt even better by the time Dr. Julia finished her treatment. She is now happily munching on hay under her shelter. Now, let’s pray that she continues to improve and that she isn’t pregnant.
She’s not feeling great but she’s feeling better. She’s gained some weight too.

Janek Vluggen D.O., MRO-EU, EDO® is from Germany and is recognized as the leading expert in the field of modern Equine Osteopathy. To say that I was amazed, would be an understatement! This was taken today of Betsy Rose running with Bronson! It’s short, but it will make you smile!
I got to ride today! If only for a few minutes. We don’t have any draft tack but a halter and lead rope was just fine.

BH Weekend Update On Oh So Many!
November 24th – 25th, 2013
We found a blanket for Mollie to wear tonight – the cold snuck up on us! It’s a bit small but her new one should arrive this week. Her eyes look better. Dr. Ryan will be out tomorrow to examine her again and do more blood work to see how… she’s progressing. Her appetite is good but she’s running a little bit of a temperature. She’s still on IV antibiotics and gets other supplements as well. You can see the Arabian in her – she’s a proud little girl and we’re very proud of her! She’s a fighter! I’m so glad she held on and that she never gave up – she had been on the ground overnight and until we got to her that day. She deserves everything she’s been deprived of, and more. Her stunted growth is some evidence of her past. Like Betsy Rose, we’ll do our best to make sure all of Mollie’s tomorrow’s are what her past should have been. We love you Mollie!

This is Classy. We had to take her to UF a few years ago because she had to have a permanent tracheotomy. She can’t whinny because of it. She’s a very sweet mare.
Peggy Sue – she’s so cute! She can’t bend her back left leg. Her pelvis was fractured in 3 places when her breeder/owner pulled a baby from her years ago. Peggy Sue is adorable! She’s lost a few lbs which is a good thing!
Gentleman – he’s an icon here that is simply a treasure. He’s an older Percheron that we pray is with us for many more years to come. He’s loved so much!
CJ is doing very well. He will be looking for a home as a pasture pal. He’s beautiful.
Garan is still looking for a home! He’s handsome, funny, and loving!
It would be really nice if Ceri and Garan found a forever home together! They are both really nice registered Arabians.
This is Indy’s Rising Son. We call him Indy. He’s had a good year of training under him and is looking for a home. He’s not going to be a big boy even though his mom was a Percheron cross. His past is a sad one even though he was born here.
Can’t forget Little E! He’s an elderly Arabian – another that everyone adores!

November 21st – 23rd, 2013 Update

Mollie’s left eye is better. The right one slightly better. She’s out and about walking for a bit this morning. So glad the weather is better. She really needs to get moving.
Like Betsy Rose, Mollie has learned that the sling is there to help her. She is very good about standing still when we remove the sling or when we are putting it back on her.
Many thanks to Kim Foster and her daughter, Susan Moon for helping out today! And they brought gifts! I felt bad having to run out on them but I had 3 medical appointments in Gainesville. I have bunches to do and then I’m calling it a day. Tomorrow will be here soon.

November 20th, 2013 Evening Update
Dr. Ryan will be back out tomorrow to examine Mollie’s eyes again and to run more blood work. Mollie is still passing sand in her poop. Her appetite is great. She didn’t get much exercise today because of the weather.
Mollie’s eyes are both cloudy. She’s pretty good about getting her eye meds, thankfully.
Donovan… isn’t he handsome?
Fiona is so sweet. She’s come so far in trust – she approaches and follows me now. Her and Dayo come running when they hear me call (likely because they know they are about to get hay) out to them. The sound of them running across the pasture is simply awesome. If all goes well, both will be at their new homes next week. This has been quite the adventure!
Betsy Rose – what a determined little mare. She was skin on bones and it’s amazing she survived. She has been nothing but determined to make it through her rehab and recovery. She is a great source of encouragement for us. She believes… This photo was taken back in July.
