Farrier, Fundraising, Volunteering

Simply the Best!

We are, as always, so very grateful for all of our volunteers who are simply the best! When I became sick on Thursday with a stomach bug, Chris, Ernie, Sandy and Joan did a stellar job of handling the morning chores. At the same time, while standing in his paddock, JoJo, who recently experienced an eye issue, let everyone know, in no uncertain terms, that he was not at all happy about wearing his fly mask. On a happier note, Jo has thankfully, recovered from Pigeon Fever, is doing well, and is as always, as sweet as ever.

Lastly, ‘Farrier Friday’ is once again upon us and since caring for hooves is essential for the overall health and well-being of equines in general, we are hoping that our wonderful little village of supporters will come forth and help sponsor a hooficure, the average cost of which is $45, for their very favorite member of our beloved Beauty’s Haven herd.

If you are able to help, please click on the ‘Donate’ button below, but if you are unable to do so at this time, we would be forever grateful if you could share this most important need amongst family and friends.

A Very Special Visit!

We had a very special visit yesterday from Dr. Christopher Burnham, D.C., accompanied by a great group of students learning about chiropractic on the horse. Chiropractic adjustments can help restore and correct spinal alignment while decreasing muscle tension, leading to increased flexibility and range of motion, thereby, helping to relieve pain and discomfort. And we most certainly, witnessed that today!

It is so very rewarding to see the impact chiropractic has on the horses.

Mishka, Jo, Peaches, Valley Girl, Dancer, and Danni all greatly benefitted, but we saw a tremendous improvement with Mishka! After his treatment, it was so good to see him grazing and moving about much better. The look that came over Mishka during, and after, his treatment was priceless! We truly appreciate Dr. Burnham and the entire group for taking the time to come out today. Dr. Burnham may be contacted through his Facebook page or via his website. He is located in the Ocala area and I learned that he also works on Magnum, a horse that Dr. Bess Darrow adopted from us a few years ago!

We hope to see Dr. Burnham again in the near future. We can’t thank him enough for the relief he brought to many here today. And I do believe that Valley Girl has a new best friend in Dr. Burnham.

Many thanks to our volunteers who came out too – our Saturday crew today was Tara, Pam, TJ, Melissa, and Yessaira. We appreciate them all!

A Very Busy Week & Match Game Update!

Another busy week and it’s already Thursday! The heat has been absolutely horrible! The sprinklers, misters and fans are constantly running. Warrior has allergies and does not sweat, so he is much more comfortable in the feed room with the AC. He oftentimes ‘asks’ us to join him and appears to be ever so grateful when we do so. Frodo, who also doesn’t sweat, prefers to remain in a stall with a swamp cooler during the day. Aaleyah Belle, Mo, and Walker can oftentimes, be found cooling down in the shade while Shadow and Benjamin come to life a bit more once the evening starts to cool down.

We have had some wonderful help during the week. Vickie spent the day washing thirty plus feed tubs with a great deal of help from Danni, who somehow, managed to get a nasty wound on the heel of his front foot, but thankfully, it is healing.

We did take time to celebrate the birthday of Kathy, a dear friend and supporter, as well as enjoy a visit by Abigail, who so enjoyed her time pampering Magic, who has truly come so far. We are so very proud of him.

Lastly, and thankfully, our two precious kittens have found a wonderful, loving home!

Sincerely,
Theresa

Match Game Update

We only have a couple of weeks remaining to meet the deadline for our Match Game! Once we receive $6K in donations, the funds will be matched and morph into $12K. We still have $3513 to go. Please share this out – we can do this, but only with your help. You can contribute via the ‘DONATE’ button or via our Facebook fundraiser by clicking on the thermometer image. Thank you, all, for your love and support.

BEST BIRTHDAY EVER!

I truly appreciate everyone’s birthday wishes! I apologize for being so late posting this but we’ve been busy getting settled back in at the farm. This birthday was extra special – for the first time in several years we actually left the farm and flew to Arizona to spend a few days with our daughter and son-in-law! My birthday was March 23rd and Katie’s the 25th. Even though I had a bad cold, I enjoyed every minute of it.

We rode trails in Sedona, bikes in Phoenix, played in the snow, and saw huge elk and the most magnificent sites at the Grand Canyon.

This was only made possible by our awesome volunteers! Jenny stayed at the farm 24/7 and had her hands full with the horses, dogs, and cats. Others were here, off and on, the majority of each day we were gone including Pam, Pat, Linda, Cindy, Avi, and Jessica. We truly appreciate each and everyone of them!

Lightning & Satin update, and a Sweet Surprise!

Lightning and Satin had been staying in the quarantine paddock but yesterday, it was time – they had a much needed bath and then we turned them out into the main paddock.

They seemed to enjoy their new adventure and slowly made their way around the paddock. When they got close to Dancer and Jo, they just kept on grazing. Dancer and Jo kept their distance for awhile, but by this evening, everyone was comfortable.

Thank you to everyone who has helped these two very special horses!

Sincerely,
Theresa

Hey Everyone!

Guess what? I received a surprise gift in the mail the other day from a very special Auntie! It was two big bags of Sneak-e-Snacks, my very favorite treat in the entire world! As you can see by the smile on Katie’s face, I am really enjoying my treats!

Thank you, Auntie Beverly!

Love,
Penny

Special Shoes for Frodo and Beauty

On Wednesday, Dr. Brent Barrett of Equine Podiatry Services came to work on Frodo and Beauty – both have been having issues with their front feet. Dr. Barrett was here for quite some time placing therapeutic shoes on both horses. We really appreciate him and I have to give Frodo and Beauty credit for being such great patients.

The shoes really made a difference for Frodo – on Wednesday evening, he was dashing about all over the place!

Beauty’s feet, however, aren’t in a great way but she’s tough and she knows she means the world to me. I can’t imagine Beauty’s Haven ever being without her – she’s the one that started the rescue. She could definitely use some prayers.

Many thanks to volunteers Marie Riordan, Pat Maynard, and Pamela S. Wood Hall for taking care of all of the chores while Dr. Barrett was here. They are all like the Energizer bunny – they always just jump right in and get things done. They are awesome and we appreciate them so very much!

If anyone would like to assist with Frodo’s podiatry care, please click the Donate button below and indicate it’s for Frodo.

Dr. Elisabeth D’Agosto Sticks with our Rescues

Last week Ruby, Frodo, Peaches and Beauty all got an acupuncture treatment. It was a special day – it was the first time I’d seen Elisabeth D’Agosto in a few years. She was a volunteer when she was a student at UF but now she’s Dr. Elisabeth D’Agosto! We’re very proud of her and her accomplishments. And we’re very blessed that she took precious time to come share her expertise with the horses. She will be here tomorrow too!

Sincerely,
Theresa & the ‘Velvet Nosers’

Busy Times & Best Buds!

Our family had a busy but wonderful and blessed month of May which started with Katie’s graduation from UF (Doctorate of Physical Therapy). Then came preparations for the wedding – last Sunday, Katie and Cole were married – to say it was a beautiful wedding would be an understatement (I’ll share some pics tomorrow)! A few days later, we took a trip to Miami for Joshua’s graduation from Larkin University where he received a Doctorate of Pharmacy. We then traveled to Georgia to visit with family and returned home on Monday evening.

It’s rare for both Bob and I to be gone from the farm at the same time, especially out of the area, but it was made possible by a team of truly amazing people! We want to thank all of the wonderful friends/volunteers who gave more time to the rescue these past few weeks which enabled us to be away for periods of time – God bless you all! One of the most valuable things anyone can give is their time – many made sacrifices to ensure everything was taken care of and that is a huge blessing!

With me being offline so much this past month, we haven’t shared much of what has been happening here at the rescue. Donations have dropped quite a bit and that’s not good! I’ll work on an update tomorrow. I know we need to ask for help with hay and a few other things but we need to do our math first.

The image above shows Derek poking his head into Magic’s stall – they’re best buds now!

Thankful!

We are very thankful for the unexpected extra help we had yesterday from Deanna and Patti! We’re also very grateful to have some new volunteers! Renee, Brook, and Christine are pictured above with Starbuck.

It’s great to have Deanna back! She volunteered a few years ago but got really busy, but now, she’s back!

That’s Patti sitting with Joie, lol.

Tony and little Lucy!

Ruby enjoyed extra attention from Deb last week. Everyone loves Ruby!

Celebration of Life Images & Video

Many thanks to everyone who made our Celebration of Life a huge success and thank you to our friends and supporters who attended – some even came from out of state! For those who were unable to attend, we have captured on video some of the wonderful moments of the day so please ENJOY!

Please support the Beauty‘sHaven herd by voting for us every day in the Shelter Challenge! This is a wonderful opportunity for our rescue to win Shelter Challenge grants which fund shelter, food, and care for our horses.  Just clickhere to cast your daily vote and please share amongst family and friends as well.

Volunteers are key to what we do here and we need more! It is one of the primary reasons that we are going to relocate as soon as we find suitable property that is closer to the vet school. And right now, until I am out of a cast, we need help even more!
