Solace, Mollie, Sisco, and Some Old Ones

December 30th, 2013 

Many thanks to Karen and Steve – they picked up and delivered hay for us today!  This is Karen meeting Mollie.

Mollie’s HR and RR are still above normal but they are getting better.  She has more energy and is getting stronger.

This is where Mollie had a bed sore from struggling to try to get up the first few days.  The sore has healed and her new coat is growing.  It’s healthy and beautiful.  If you tilt your head a little, and use your imagination, it’s in the shape of a heart! 

I thought I got a better video today of Mollie, sorry, it’s not great but at least you can see how she is doing.  She ran and played, did the tail in the air and neck thing that Arabians do, accompanied by snorting.  She’s going to be ok.

Santana – THE perfect babysitter.  He has TONS of patience!  The mini’s take turns standing under him – it’s hilarious!  That’s Harvey’s backside you see under Santana in this photo.

We have some horses that will be needing help in order to get some vetting and x-rays done.  We need horse size Farnam Super Mask’s (double velcro) without ears.  Between the sand, sun, and lime rock dust that we have here, most of the horses wear a mask and they have to be changed daily.  We have enough of the long nose masks at this time.  

Solace – he’s been laying down more than usual, not finishing all of his food, and looks like he just doesn’t feel well at times.  He’s just not himself.  We’d like to have a physical done – including blood work.  

Sisco – he’s lame on the front right foot and needs x-rays.  Sisco is a cancer survivor and an awesome horse.  We’d like to find him a great forever home but we need to resolve this issue first.  He’s a 1987 model.  Sisco loves the mares and has no clue he’s over 15 yrs old.

CJ – he’s always had a bum left knee and is lame but he gets around pretty well but he will never be sound.  We’d like to have the knee x-rayed.  CJ needs a quiet home as a pasture pal where he won’t be as active as he is here.  He forgets about his knee and runs a lot here – it’s simply not good for him.  CJ is about 15 years young.

Cookie – I’d like to have the area where the cancer was removed near her left eye to be examined – there may be a new growth.  She also needs her front feet x-rayed.  Would anyone like to help with any of these needs?  I’d like to get on Dr. Porter’s schedule and get it all done on the same day.  

This is Little E, Sisco, and Gentleman in the photo.  Matilda is under the tree in the background.  These are our “old ones” that are simply amazing and are loved very much.

BH Weekend Update On Oh So Many!

November 24th – 25th, 2013

We found a blanket for Mollie to wear tonight – the cold snuck up on us! It’s a bit small but her new one should arrive this week. Her eyes look better. Dr. Ryan will be out tomorrow to examine her again and do more blood work to see how… she’s progressing. Her appetite is good but she’s running a little bit of a temperature. She’s still on IV antibiotics and gets other supplements as well. You can see the Arabian in her – she’s a proud little girl and we’re very proud of her! She’s a fighter! I’m so glad she held on and that she never gave up – she had been on the ground overnight and until we got to her that day. She deserves everything she’s been deprived of, and more. Her stunted growth is some evidence of her past. Like Betsy Rose, we’ll do our best to make sure all of Mollie’s tomorrow’s are what her past should have been. We love you Mollie!

This is Classy. We had to take her to UF a few years ago because she had to have a permanent tracheotomy. She can’t whinny because of it. She’s a very sweet mare.

Peggy Sue – she’s so cute! She can’t bend her back left leg. Her pelvis was fractured in 3 places when her breeder/owner pulled a baby from her years ago. Peggy Sue is adorable! She’s lost a few lbs which is a good thing!

Gentleman – he’s an icon here that is simply a treasure. He’s an older Percheron that we pray is with us for many more years to come. He’s loved so much!

CJ is doing very well. He will be looking for a home as a pasture pal. He’s beautiful.

Garan is still looking for a home! He’s handsome, funny, and loving!

It would be really nice if Ceri and Garan found a forever home together! They are both really nice registered Arabians.

This is Indy’s Rising Son. We call him Indy. He’s had a good year of training under him and is looking for a home. He’s not going to be a big boy even though his mom was a Percheron cross. His past is a sad one even though he was born here.

Can’t forget Little E! He’s an elderly Arabian – another that everyone adores!

It was a very exciting day here this past Friday! Dr. Julia Simonson arranged for Janek Vluggen (from Germany) to come to Beauty’s Haven to work with Betsy Rose and Bella! Janek Vluggen D.O., MRO-EU, EDO® is recognized as the leading expert in the field of modern Equine Osteopathy. To say that I was amazed, would be an understatement! I’ll share more tomorrow – I’m crashing on a project and need to finish up some things. Have a great night all!

Smiles and Ribbons!

I actually took some time on Sunday to go for a little ride myself. It was nice, very nice! The weather has been perfect!

Remember Starlight? She was a rescue we took in last year that was “unwanted”. She had been living in horrible conditions. Look at what she and Jordan accomplished today!!! I’m convinced there are no “unwanted” horses. Some may be misplaced, but they are all wanted, IMO. I’m so proud of both of these girls – just look at the ribbons!

Look at Lacey with her new human – this is a reminder of why it may take us longer than some to find homes for horses. It has to be the right fit – the right connection. Our goal is to find a forever home. When the time, horse, and human are right, well, great things happen. Look at that SMILE! PRICELESS!

Bo has become quite the babysitter! Bo is the horse that was dropped off in the middle of a dirt road and abandoned. He walked from the road to a tree and that’s where he stood all day long likely waiting for his owner to come back for him. They never did. It was a hot, sweltering feels like 100 degree day, with no water – from at least 7 am that morning until we picked him up late that evening. I think he was likely a cow horse that got injured and could no longer work. He’s got the moves, but he is very lame from an old injury.

Beanie Barbaro’s Visit, Update on Others

September 23rd – 25th, 2013

Lake Beauty’s Haven!  The sand bags that were put down last week – washed away yesterday.  I have never seen so much rain accumulate so quickly!  We were under generator power and had all the babies tucked in with Betsy Rose and Lucy.  The lightning was horrible.  Erosion?  I don’t want to talk about it. Not complaining, it could be worse.  Everyone is safe.

Gentleman is doing very well considering he’s 30+ years young.  Some days, he moves better than others, but don’t we all? He’s a happy horse. And he is loved so very much!

Solace is also doing very well.  This was taken yesterday before the horrible storms.  That’s Gentleman’s big butt on the left – they have become very good friends.

Over a year ago, we took on a case of 30+ Paso Fino’s that had pretty much been living feral for almost 3 years. This is Laila – one of the mares. When we rescued her, she was an emotional wreck that was full of nervous energy. When she’d swish her tail, she would move forward as though something was spooking her. Well, at the time, we didn’t know that inside of the mess of a tail was about 12″ of barb wire. The poor mare – she’d swish her tail and the barb would poke her. Melissa and George have done a great job with her – look at her now!

Dr. Julia examined Betsy Rose last evening as she’s been having an issue with her back left hip/leg/stifle. Sometimes, she doesn’t want to put weight on it. Dr. Julia thinks she’s strained the muscles and may want to do an ultrasound if she is no better in a couple of weeks. She does not think Betsy Rose fractured anything which was her initial concern. She recommends Betsy Rose stay on stall rest, with some hand walking, and acupuncture/massage – she was back this morning to do acupuncture. Since Betsy Rose is still very fragile in many ways, please continue to keep her in your prayers.

Many of you may know who Schoep and John are, but you may not be aware of the organization, Stop Animal Cruelty Worldwide. They help animals in need and they have a Facebook page and a website – . They made a beautiful blanket especially for Betsy Rose in honor of Schoep. I call it her “comfort blanket”. It’s one of a kind and very special, just like Betsy Rose. I will post more photos of it in an album tomorrow – Betsy Rose has some things to say about it and she wants to share. Many thanks to Pamela Thompson and everyone at SACW!

Tiffany Redmon did a beautiful drawing of Betsy Rose. “Mommy Theresa that looks like ME!” Betsy is so proud of it! It is hanging on her wall along with a picture of Cloud the Stallion.

And now a long awaited story that I have wanted to share about Betsy’s introduction to Beanie Barbaro:

“Betsy Rose and Freckles, we have a new visitor who would like to meet you.”

“Who is it, Mommy Theresa?”

“Hello Betsy Rose! And this must be your best friend, Freckles. I have heard so much about you. My name is Beanie Barbaro and I have been traveling throughout the United States meeting very special horses like you.”

“I am so happy to meet you, Beanie Barbaro. What a very pretty name.”

“I was named after one of the greatest racehorses ever! His name was Barbaro – he won the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May, 2006. He was so very fast and ran like the wind.”

“Wow, Beanie Barbaro, he sounds like such a special horse!”

“Barbaro was indeed very special, Betsy Rose. Sadly, he broke his leg in his next race and spent many months in the hospital. Barbaro had a wonderful doctor who cared for him. His name was Dr. Richardson.”

“Is Barbaro all better now, Beanie Barbaro?”

“No Betsy Rose, Barbaro got a very bad disease called Laminitis which caused him much pain. He is at Rainbow Bridge now, watching down upon you and all of the other horses throughout the world. Although, he is on the other side of Rainbow Bridge, he is still helping horses everywhere. More research is being done to help prevent and treat laminitis so other horses don’t suffer.”

“That is so sad, Beanie Barbaro. I would have loved to meet Barbaro.”

“Barbaro is here in spirit, Betsy Rose. He is all around you, and together with your Mommy Theresa, maybe he has something to do with making you all better.”

“I am so happy, that you have decided to visit Beauty’s Haven, Beanie Barbaro. I can’t wait to introduce you to all the other horses that live here!”

“I am happy to be here, Betsy Rose. I have heard that this is, indeed, a very special place…

Betsy Rose – And a Swish of Her Tail and 273 lbs! Updates on Others!

August 9th – 11th, 2013

Dr. Julia came to visit with Betsy Rose on Friday.  Penny greeted Dr. Julia as usual – she ran alongside her car until it was parked and then went right around to greet her.

After a few scratches, off we went to see Betsy Rose.  Well, she wasn’t where I left her.  We walked around the barn and no Betsy.  We called for her.  Then we heard it – an itty bitty whinny.  Guess where we found her?  In the shavings room where we keep a couple of bales of hay – she had helped herself and made a mess in the process!  But it was all good – it just means she’s ready to get her back teeth done! Dr. Bess will be here on Wednesday to finish her up!
Betsy Rose – slowly but surely gaining.  She’s up to about 273 lbs.

I know this picture is fuzzy but do you see something you’ve never seen before?  Yes, Betsy Rose is now swishing her tail! Muscle is returning!  It took weeks before she could even lift her tail to go poop.  Now she is able to swish!  So proud of this little mare!!!

Penny knows that Auntie Karen Andreu brings apples! That’s Sisco in the back – he got apples too.

Solace after breakfast. Gentleman and Little E are in the background beneath a tree that has an overhead mister in it.  The misters help tremendously – wish we had more trees and misters but we are very thankful for the ones we do have.  When we moved here a few years ago, we had no trees and it was miserable with no shade.  Shade is a true blessing.

This evening, I played with Beauty for the first time since she foundered and rotated earlier this year! For months, it was thought she wouldn’t be able to go back to work but I never stopped believing in her.  She needs some conditioning, but that’s ok – she’s sound!  Having patience can be hard sometimes, but it was well worth the wait!  Beauty is the reason Beauty’s Haven came to be!  I’m so happy!

Betsy Rose and the Boys

July 27th – 28th, 2013

We took Betsy Rose out for a walk on Saturday morning. Things were a bit busy because the fly mister system is being installed. She was startled by something and jumped away too fast and fell down. We took advantage of the situation and let her take a good nap. When she woke up, we had someone on all sides of her and with little help, she hopped up! Out of the bad of going down, came the good of a great nap and the encouragement of getting up! Her journey to recovery brings back good memories of watching our kids learn to walk and even when they learned to ride a bike. There where bumps along the way, but that’s what it took for them to learn to thrive on their own. We are very proud of our kids and their accomplishments and we are proud of Betsy Rose, too!

“Mommy Theresa can you make the others be quiet for a bit? Betsy Rose is FINALLY taking a nap and I don’t want her to be disturbed.” Freckles is such a considerate friend!

Betsy Rose had a great Sunday – she is slowly gaining strength. Freckles is always close by cheering her on. She is still adorable.

Betsy Rose did take a couple of good naps today. I’m looking forward to the day when she can stay out of the sling. I think she’s going to be a little mare that can be quite opinionated!

Garan came to the rescue today. He had been staying at a foster home but not putting on weight like we think he should. He’ll be going on the same feed schedule as Gentleman, Little E, and Solace. He’s a magnificent registered Arabian gelding that is looking for a forever home. It took a couple of hours, but the boys finally settled down and now Garan is grazing next to the rest of them.

Harvey got to play with the boys! CaryLou looks funny – he was playing under the sprinkler. Humans coming to Beauty’s Haven beware – the boys are all together! Enter their paddock at your own risk! LOL!

However, she has double barreled Harvey a few times this past week – he’s getting a bit too frisky and I’m concerned about her getting his kneecap. Letting him out with the boys likely brings her some relief.

Betsy Rose, Solace, Mo, & the Minis

July 24th – 25th, 2013

Solace has an infection that is believed to originate from a cracked tooth all the way in the back of his mouth.  The infection may have made its way to his sinus’.  He will be going to the hospital today – we’ll see what more x-rays show and go from there.

This is Solace the day he arrived back in December 2012. Imagine how thin he was without the unhealthy winter coat.

It seemed to take forever with Solace at the hospital today.  They did a dental exam, blood work, x-rays, and scoped him.  What they found is an almost perfect 3/8″ hole in the top of his mouth that goes into his sinus cavity.  We need to continue to monitor him as we have been and treating his symptoms.  He’s a good boy.  At least he didn’t have to have any teeth pulled.  Solace getting x-rays.

This is Betsy Rose introducing Freckles to Dr. Bess.  She’s very proud of her little friend! Dr. Bess wants to give Betsy a couple more weeks before sedating her to get to her horrible back teeth. Betsy Rose is gaining weight nicely.  She’s a captivating little mare that makes us all smile.  “Hi Dr. Bess! Freckles here – up here!!!  I hang out with Betsy Rose all of the time – were BFF!  She’s doing really good and everyone is so good to her – she’s loved!  She appreciates everyone and everything done for her.  She’s told me more than once that she’s more than thankful that she was given another chance – she loves life!”

Dr. Bess was totally in awe of the gifts that Betsy Rose has received! And she thinks Freckles is great!

Betsy Rose was a bit more lively today than she was the first time Dr. Bess met her.

Betsy Rose enjoyed her walk yesterday.  After grazing a bit, she wanted to nap.  So we let her.  She pretty much gets what she wants.  LOL  She is a tiny little girl that has a huge heart – she makes us all smile.  Betsy Rose is simply amazing and adorable!  She needs to build muscle and she is – it’s hard to tell looking at the pictures – but she is.  Slow and steady…  Yes, Betsy Rose is still thin but she’s put on a good amount of weight.  She is more steady on her feet each day.  She’s a fighter that believes she can – and she will!

I will be so happy for Betsy Rose when she is able to stay out of the sling.  It’s going to take a bit more time but I’ll know when the time is right.  She’s come a long way.

Betsy Rose. I think her name is just perfect. When I met her the name “Betsy” came to mind. I rubbed her forehead and saw the “design” on it and thought about rose bushes that my mom used to grow. Silly, I guess. But I like it and I think she does too!

Harvey and Gracie.  Harvey is growing like a weed!  Dr. Lugo really did a great job putting Harvey’s little kneecap back where it should have been.

This is Mo.  He’s a 13 yr old Arabian gelding that is looking for a forever home.  He’s got a really great personality and a bit of brio – if only I were younger.  I just adore Arabians! Mo is smart and he loves to please.  Dr. Bess did his teeth yesterday.

BHFER Tuesday & Wednesday Update

The walk Betsy Rose took last night was 185′ long and she did it on her own (with spotters)!

Look how happy she is – we were all happy! After she got going, she felt good enough to try to walk a bit faster but she tripped and thankfully, we caught her. She recovered and took a rest and then kept going. She’s a very smart little mare with a huge determination!

Remember Gypsy, the mare that was going to be fed to big cats because she was dangerous? I adored this mare. Here is a link to her story when she first arrived at Beauty’s Haven.

We would never knowingly adopt out a horse that is dangerous. Well, being around horses, there is always a chance for danger. But Gypsy is a loving and beautiful soul. Someone just needed to listen to her and communicate with her in a non threatening way and show her that having a relationship with a human could be a good thing. I spent some time on the ground with her – a few short sessions a day over a few weeks is all it took. She wasn’t mean or anything of the sort. She went to her adopted home many weeks ago and she is adored!

The boys will be able to play together in a couple of months. Soon, we will have a castration day before it gets hotter. All 3 will get snipped.

Next week will be busy – and a bit stressful. Solace is tentatively scheduled to go to the hospital on Thursday, June 25th, to have his cracked tooth extracted – it’s all the way in the back of his mouth. Dr. Porter did x-rays and it appears to be cracked. This could be the source of infection that leads to his sinus. The estimate was $450. We have received $200 thus far and need an additional $200. Would anyone like to help with this need? The top picture was what he looked like when he arrived this past December – another horse that would not have lasted much longer. The picture on the bottom was recently taken.

 

Dr. Ryan was out to look at a spot just under Cookie’s left eye – it’s that dreaded “C” word – squamous cell carcinoma. Cookie is tentatively scheduled to go to the hospital on Monday to have it surgically removed. It does not appear that the eye itself has been compromised and we are very thankful for that. She had been adopted out but came back a few months ago. If anyone would like to help to sponsor Cookie’s surgery and aftercare please let me know – we need to raise $1000 – $1200.


Update: Solace’s surgery is taken care of – thank you everyone! Now we need to get Cookie’s cancer taken care of. SCC is an aggressive cancer and the sooner the surgery the better. Betsy Rose & Solace – Looking Good

I made the mistake of opening the vet bill for last month.  We need help with Celesta’s vet bill and for Solace to go to the hospital for oral extraction (est. $450).  Antibiotics haven’t worked. Well, they likely did but the issue is back… again.  Yesterday he had a snotty nostril again and a temperature – this needs to be taken care of.
