Solace wasn’t feeling very well this morning. Blood tests didn’t show anything – the results were all good. His temp was up much of the day but is finally down to normal. We will keep monitoring him and if he gets worse I’m to call Dr. Ryan. Please keep him in your prayers.

This is Sisco. He had a tumor removed a few weeks ago – squamous cell carcinoma.  The site was injected with cisplatin and cream is being applied daily – he is doing great.  He will need another chemo treatment on about 4 weeks.  If we win first place in the Elder Ford of Tampa contest it would cover the cost of his next treatment.  Please vote for us and ask friends and family to also vote.  Thank you!

PLEASE help us to find a good home for Sunset – she really needs to go somewhere with plenty of shade ASAP. Sunset is a 25 yr young former PMU mare who is in need of a forever home. She has a wonderful, sweet personality. She needs to go somewhere cooler or with plenty of shade as she struggles in the heat – have very little shade. If you are interested in adopting Sunset please e-mail Melissa at bhfer.melissa. Adoption fee will be waived to approved home.

The first bracelet, made by Lisa Austin of Crazy4ponytails, is made from the hair of Solace!  The minimum bid was $40 and bidding increments are $5. B idding will end 3-3-13!  All proceeds will go directly to helping the horses!  Current Bid: $200!!

We are still in need of Arabian, Horse, and Large Horse size double Velcro flymasks. And we need milk thistle – many of the horses here get this. We usually get this from The Healing Barn – if you would like to help with this please let me know. Ideally, we would order the 11 lb. container.  And usually, when ordered and being shipped to us, a discount is given.

Calling it a day a bit early – going to meet a mare (possibly pregnant) in the morning that I’m told will be fed to big cats if a home isn’t found. Thank you all for your continued support – have a great night!

Sincerely,
Theresa

Solace had a gas colic last night but is now passing gas and poop.  He’s drinking but has no appetite and his temp is up a bit.  He still has the snots now and then.

Please keep him in your prayers.  I will try to post a video of him on YouTube later today.

It’s going to be a VERY busy day here but I’ll update when I can.  Have a great day everyone!

Theresa

February 14th, 2013

I wanted to get this prepared and sent out yesterday but I just couldn’t concentrate – I had to walk away and try again today.  Valentine’s Day is always bittersweet.

On February 14th, 1980 an Arabian was born – his registered name was RC ElDinero.  We called him Nick or Nicky.  He found his way to us on June 1st, 2007.  How he found his way to us was nothing short of a miracle.  He had been starved, he was diabetic and laminitic, he had Cushings Disease, and more – the odds were against him.  Nick’s body condition was about the same as Solace when he first arrive – not quite a 0.5 on the Henneke scale.  You can’t go much lower than that without meeting death.  We had one of the best care giver’s team you could want, including Dr. Eleanor Kellon, VMD. Nicky’s story is a sad one but he brought so much good and love into our life – he had a huge heart that loved life but what humans had done, or not done, for him proved to be too much for his weak body.  He was only with us for 6 weeks.  But you can bet that in that 6 weeks he knew love from near and far.

About 3 weeks after Nicky got here, a benefit show was held here at the rescue.  At the spur of the moment during a break in the show, something came over me to take Nick to the arena and let him feel the presence of the people around him.  Once in the arena he stood up proud and tall – he looked around him and let out a forceful but weak whinny.  I was so proud of him – tears ran down my face.  We slowly walked back to the barn and he laid down – he was exhausted but he was a proud and dignified Arabian Prince and he felt it – that meant so much to me.  This was Nicky the day he caught the attention of one of our volunteers that just happened upon the farm where he was living at the end of a road.  He was being boarded.  He had Cushing’s and the owner, who lived a couple of hours away, said she assumed he was getting his needed medication even though she hadn’t been buying it.  She hadn’t seen him in awhile but assumed he was fine.  Well, I don’t believe it.  He didn’t get in such bad condition overnight.  Our time with him will never be forgotten and we will love him, always.

Nicky

When Solace arrived on December 16th, 2012 thoughts of Nicky came flooding back. Solace was about the same age that Nick was when he came to us.  Solace’s body condition score was about the same.  Looking at the photos below of Nick on the left and Solace on the right – well, I think it will help you to understand why I had been flooded with memories.  The 6 week mark of when we lost Nicky hung in the back of my mind but, thankfully, Solace has passed that mark.

Nicky on the left – Solace on the right

Solace is quite remarkable and is living proof that miracles do happen.  I believe.

Princess Birthday Surprise

On February 14th, 1988 another beautiful Arabian was born – her name was RL Princes Regala.  The picture on the left was taken the day she arrived at the rescue – September 4th, 2008.  Her human was going off to college but wanted to make sure Princess would be forever taken care of.  Princess was almost adopted on 3 different occasions but each time, as the application was being processed, something happened to her.  The 1st time she had a bout of laminitis.  The 2nd time she had an eye injury.  And the 3rd time another bout of laminitis.  At that point, we determined maybe she just didn’t want to leave.  She is now a sanctuary horse that is loved by many.  She is a very sweet mare.  Yesterday her previous owners drove a long way to wish her a happy birthday!  Unfortunately, the weather was bad but they enjoyed being together again and I enjoyed seeing the reunion.

This was taken of Gentleman and Princess today – they are BFF.  Princess had just had a hooficure and was looking very happy – I’m sure she enjoyed her visitors yesterday.

We have been blessed to have many proud Arabian horses in our herd.

Have a good night everyone.  We’ll have another busy weekend ahead here at the rescue.  I worked at the barn much of the day until late evening.  It felt good, but I’m beat.

Theresa

February 10th, 2018

A couple of the horses got a much needed bath this weekend and most got a good grooming.  The mini mares got off the hook for being clipped – there just was not enough time and they are going to be a project.

If only the weather would be this perfect all year and the horses would stay this clean…

Roxy adores Peggy Sue – and the feeling is mutual.

Solace is still doing well and he adores his food!

Nevada looks very handsome!

Sisco eating hay out the back of the truck.  He is doing well too.

Bouie and Frodo – our little fuzzy bears. They are also in the waiting line to be clipped.

Morgan LaFaye – she’s looking for a home.  She’s a very sweet girl.  I apologize that the picture is fuzzy – I took it with my phone.

Hollie is also very sweet.  She has not adjusted well to the Florida environment and is having trouble breathing – the blowing dust from the lime rock road is not good for her and we have very little shade. She will be leaving soon for her new home where she will be more comfortable.  We will miss her but her new mom will keep us updated.

Sunset also has labored breathing.  She needs to find a home that is better suited for her and the sooner the better – before warmer temperatures arrive.  Like with Hollie, the dust that blows off the lime rock road is not good for her and she needs shade.  I’m so glad she was clipped last weekend.

Some of you may remember Archer – he is doing great and his family adores him!  That’s his best friend on the right.

It was a really busy weekend here.  A lot got done – a big “thank you” to everyone that took time out of their busy schedule to come out and help.  The more hands we have to get daily chores done the better – it leaves time for other things like baths, clipping, raking, cleaning up the barn, etc.  It really takes a lot of time, money, and hands on to keep this place going.  We are very blessed to have the support we have – here and from afar.  It’s only because of other people pulling together to help us that we are successful – be it donations, prayers, sharing our info with others, etc.  Without all of you helping us we couldn’t do what we do – we sincerely thank you.

And many thanks to Marie for making and donating the necklaces that helped us to raise the funds to pay for Solace’s blood transfusion – that is a lot of worry off my mind.  And it is only part of the vet bill. We still have a jewelry auction going on to help with other vet needs. And we need to buy hay again.  Some of the horses are getting a hooficure this week – if anyone would like to sponsor a horse please let me know.

I’m calling it a day.  God bless and again, thank you all, very much for your continued support.  Have a wonderful week!

Oh – please don’t forget the current “Valentine’s Day Match Game!” If you donate towards the Match Game please indicate so with your donation.

One of our wonderful supporters has offered a very generous $200 Match Game for Valentine’s Day!  The supporter will match each dollar donated from others until we hit the $200 limit!
So this means a possibility of $400 in donations!

Please remember that all contributions are tax deductible and no donation is ever too small.

Just a few pictures from today…

Solace visiting with Jessie today.  Jessie and her husband, Ron, are visiting from NJ.  Solace is now munching on hay in his stall with his blanket on.  It’s going to get cold tonight.  We continue to pray that he continues to improve.  Sometimes the effects of starvation and neglect are not known until long after recovery has begun.

Ruby getting her share of carrots.

Penelope got her share too.

This is Rosita with Andrew – a new volunteer that is a student at UF!

Solace giving Marie that look – you know, the one that says “Got Food?”  He knows the good stuff is on the other side of that door! LOL

Baby Ray had an appointment to meet a potential human adoptive family tomorrow but it’s been postponed.  He’s such a good boy.

January 22nd, 2013

This was taken of Solace today.  He is doing well which makes us humans feel better.

I am a little better.  I tire very easily.  I did manage to eat some mashed potatoes and drink some weak tea today.  My doctor (family Dr. not the one at the hospital) called to check on me and said I need to go in for another chest X-ray. Hopefully I’ll continue to improve.  I really appreciate everyone’s kind words and prayers.  I hope to get out an update out on of some horses tomorrow.

Blackie and Lace had hooficures this morning and went home with Pam for the night. They are going to their new home in the morning which is only about an hour away.  I’m so very happy that they were adopted together – they had been BFF for 15+ years.

Solace is doing ok – maybe too ok.  He took off this evening at the barn – running and we’re not sure why.  He slipped and fell but got back up and kept going.  I hope he’s not sore tomorrow.  I would be.  He’s tucked into his stall for the night.

I ate a donut hole this morning with some milk and seemed to feel a bit better after.  But as I got to moving around the nausea started all over again.  I know I need to drink more but I have no desire to – no desire to eat either.  But I did try having a little soup with crackers tonight but it didn’t go very well.

Tomorrow is a new day and it will be busy – some are getting hooficures and visitors are coming.  I don’t want to give what I have to anyone!  Back to bed now.  Would anyone like to sponsor a hooficure?  If so, please LMK.  Thanks everyone – have a good night.

Sincerely,
Theresa
