A Long Night Collage

We made it! All horses are accounted for. That was a really long night!  We are truly exhausted but very thankful that the storm is over.

Precious little Grace – she’s now officially, a ‘Storm Cat.’

Poor Betsy Rose looks like the way I feel.

The horses that stayed at the concrete barn during the storm all returned home today.

Lucy and CaryLou were quite happy to see their Mommy Theresa!
The rain is never ending. The barn is flooded and the water keeps coming.  Thankfully, the stalls are mostly dry. We still have to assess the damage and will keep you all updated.

Thank you so very much, once again, for keeping Beauty’s Haven in your thoughts and prayers.

I heard it. The sound of the door knob jiggling which really caught my attention – Sawyer used to do this often.  But then I remembered – Sawyer is gone.  The jiggling continues.  I open the door and what do I see?  A precious little donkey face looking at me!

JoJo Workshop

“It’s me, Mommy Theresa! I used to see Sawyer do this so I thought I’d try it and see what happens. A few little jiggles and there you are! Am I in trouble?”  I don’t think I could ever get upset with this little one – JoJo makes my heart smile!

May 5th, 2017

Sawyer followed me around this morning after finishing his breakfast and having some pal around time with Lucy. I was delivering hay and, by the time I got to the 3rd paddock, I knew something was wrong.  He was looking at his tummy – one side and then the other.  We took him and Lucy to the barn and put them in a stall so I could take Sawyer’s temperature and listen to his heart and tummy.  His temperature was normal but I didn’t hear any gut sounds and could not hear his heartbeat.  We had a very drastic change of weather last night and usually Little E is the one that gets a gas colic.  But Little E was fine.  Sawyer, however, was far from fine – this was a very painful colic.  I called the vet and administered medications, as directed. Sawyer became more painful and I was concerned that he could hurt himself in the stall so we opted to take him under the shade of the tree by the barn.
Sawyer Colic Meds
We hadn’t been in the shade of the tree long before Sawyer became even more uncomfortable.  I administered more medications while we waited for the vet.  As the medication started to wear off the second time, he laid down to rest.  His gums became very pale and a toxic line became apparent.  We were likely going to lose him but I prayed for a miracle.  I talked to him and told him how much he is loved by many humans.  I promised him that “his” Lucy would forever be loved and cared for – my heart was very heavy.  I try really hard not to cry until after they are gone – but sometimes it’s just impossible.
Sawyer Resting
When the vet arrived, she could not hear a heartbeat or gut sounds either and said he was not going to make it.  Sawyer had gone septic and the only thing we could do was release him from his pain.
Sawyer Heartbeat
I held Sawyer tight as he went to Rainbow Bridge.  He joined Penny and the rest of our heavenly herd.
Sawyer Got His Wings
Sawyer was a very sweet, wise pony of thirty plus years, one of our “Old One’s.”  Losing two precious souls, Sawyer and Penny, within two days, was devastating.  There are no words to describe the pain and helplessness that was felt as they made their journey to the Bridge.
Lucy's Sawyer
Godspeed, Sawyer.  Fly high and pain free with those beautiful wings you so gallantly earned.  You will forever remain in our hearts – we love you, always.

Little E has been quite the gentleman – he’s been letting Emma borrow his blanket for this cold spell. She’s still having issues in her neck but she is a happy little girl.

Thanks to Bonnie, Lucy now has a bell that she wears so that Sawyer can better keep track of her. Sawyer is an elderly pony with greatly diminished vision.  He often gets upset when he can’t find his BFF, Lucy.  Thank you Bonnie!

Donovan got a “get out of your paddock and roam free” pass today around the house. I think JoJo must have told him there’s something good in the office. I could just picture him making his way up the stairs in one giant step. OMG!

Donovan is one of many horses looking for a forever home. He’s so sweet – I hate to think of him not being here but he deserves his own home.

Lucy getting her morning makeover from Marilyn Doren. Lucy has a trach that gets cleaned each day. Everyone loves Lucy!

Well, I guess it’s official. Fall is here. There are leaves on the ground already. I just hope and pray the green grass sticks around for quite a bit longer.

September 24th

JoJo helping Chris collect feed tubs. He’s a riot!

Betsy Rose and Penny

It’s been a busy week, but we’ve been able to get a couple of needed baths in.  On Monday, I opted to give Waylon a bath, clean his sheath, and check him for a bean. I got three quarters of the way done, but was summoned to do something else. Sue rinsed him off for me – thanks Sue!

We use a great product for sheath cleaning called Healing Tree Sheath Cleaner. It soothes, cleans, and dissolves dirt, grime, etc. and it smells good too! It’s veterinary formulated and the geldings seem to think it’s ok. It comes in a spray bottle which I really like. If you would like to donate this product, it’s available at this link: http://www.besthorseproductsavailable.com/products/go-way-all-natural-repellent-16oz.

Waylon was a pony horse at Calder Race Track but wasn’t wanted anymore. He ended up in a bad situation and was attacked by a stallion that took a chunk out of his backside which has healed nicely. He’s about 19 years young and is one of the sweetest horses you could ever meet! He’s been having a tough time breathing, but with the cooler weather coming, his condition will hopefully, improve.

Good morning everyone! Daisy’s full of smiles today! It’s going to be another very busy and hot day here. Before it got too busy we wanted to wish everyone a great day!

My escorts this morning. Duke beside me in the golf cart seat, Jazzy leads, JoJo stays right beside me. LOL Have a great day everyone!

Remember Silver Belle? She was also raised by Momma Sue, Aaleyah Belles mom. She’s loved. This is what helps to motivate us to keep going – happy horses, happy humans!

May 17th

I wish I could end the day with some good news but I can’t. In fact, I’d like to ask for prayers for one of our horses and his adoptive parents. Some of you may remember Cisco – an older Haflinger pony cross that came to us in 2012 from a home where the owner was a meth user. I got a call from his adoptive humans this evening – he was colicing – thought to be a twist. I haven’t heard back from anyone yet but I hope and pray he’s working through it. He’d been given fluids, etc. Cisco is a lovely soul – he keeps watch over Tia and Tess – two donkeys that were also adopted from us.

Update – we lost Cisco to colic which is a dreadful thing. Thank you Tony and Michelle for giving him a wonderful home and the love and care he deserved. Rest in peace Cisco – we love you, always.

JoJo’s ears are still growing!

The trio of donks is never very far away. Of course, JoJo is always first followed by Jazzy and then Daisy.

Cookie is doing well. She got a hooficure this past weekend from Laura Ritonia-Castaños. And one of Cookie’s best friends, Kim Furse, held for Laura. We truly appreciate them!

Well, our snowbirds are gone until the fall. We’re going to miss you Suzanne, LouAnn, and Ginny!

Finally! He’s got it figured out! No more 2 am wakeups! Go JoJo!

Take your donkey to work day! He’s a good helper!

A bittersweet update on Kiana. The family that fosters Bella has been coming to spend time with Kiana over the past few weeks and they have totally fallen in love with her and Kiana looks forward to their visits. Kiana is doing great – she’s more active and independent each day. We’ve been turning her out with the boys to play with because she’s just become too energetic for Betsy Rose. Kiana likes to run and kick and play like babies should – and it’s a wonderful and warm sight to see! Sometimes, we lock up the mini’s and donkeys that stay around the house and let Betsy Rose and Kiana out together and Betsy Rose will run with Kiana too. But I won’t risk Betsy Rose out with most of the others – she is too fragile. Her hearing and sight are not great and she startles easy. Betsy is fine about Kiana spending time out with the young ones – she doesn’t fret nor does she get anxious when Kiana is out of her sight. Betsy is a wise healer of sorts and will be here to help future arrivals. I think this was her destiny and she knows it. I thank God for her each and every day.

I assure you that nobody could love Betsy Rose or Kiana and care more about their welfare than we do.  This decision wasn’t a quick one – it’s taken some time, observation, and prayers but Kiana is ready for her forever home and we love her enough to allow her to go – she deserves this. Jody home schools her sons and there is someone home around the clock.  They have a mare with a baby that is about Kiana’s age.  Their farm is beautiful and it isn’t far from the rescue. They will keep us updated.  This is never easy.  But this is what we do – we must in order to make room for others that need help. Jody and her family will be here again tomorrow to spend more time with Kiana.  We have other visitors coming tomorrow too – it’s going to be busy!

Kiana palled around with Lucy a bit this afternoon. It was so hot and humid today, the boys didn’t even run and play. We have 3 sets of visitors coming tomorrow – I sure hope and pray the weather is a bit kinder than today.

Kiana has had a growth spurt. She got a hooficure yesterday. She’s also starting to get some needed muscles from running and playing with the mini’s and donkeys.

Saturday, June 28th

“JoJo it’s time for you to go back in your room now. The morning sun is out and Kiana wants to come out for awhile.”

“Ok Betsy Rose. I’m ready for a nap anyway. I helped mommy Theresa and Kiley with morning barn chores while you and Kiana had breakfast. It’s gonna feel like 106 today – we’re all going to bake!”

It was a very busy day today – lots of visitors and smiles! I love to see others interact with the horses and donkeys!

Roxy bathed a few horses including Serenity. I know they all loved it – the heat and humidity were horrible. Serenity and her brother, Bryce, are looking for a forever home.

Aaleyah Belle, Sisco, and Victoria.

This is Valerie Goldsmith and Ted meeting our little Betsy Rose.

Jody and her family will post updates on Kiana. Its so hard to let them go. We spend days and nights helping them to heal mentally and physically – we love them all dearly. We love them enough to let them go when the time and circumstances are right.

Kiana got to spend time with her adoptive family. She just eats up the extra attention. You certainly can’t tell she got a bath 2 days ago. LOL

Is this not simply adorable? This is Violet visiting with JoJo. Violet’s 3rd birthday is next weekend – happy birthday Violet! I enjoyed meeting you and your mom and dad! Thank you Ashley and Lyle!

Pistol and Oscar – what a pair they are! They are both ready for their forever home and it would be simply amazing if they went together – they are so very bonded. Donkeys have been known to grieve deeply when they lose their best friend – I don’t want that to happen.

Baby Ray got a much needed bath and some playtime with Kylie Chapman today.  He’s a stinker! He got a hooficure too.  Baby Ray is also looking for a forever home.

A VERY SPECIAL FUNDRAISER!

A one of a kind offer! For our latest fundraiser, we are offering a lovely Betsy Rose & Kiana 16” x 16” pillow!  A suggested donation of $5 for each chance may be forwarded via our donate page: theresa. Please designate your donation, ‘Betsy Rose & Kiana Pillow.’  The winning name will be selected in Morriston, Florida, on July 15, 2014 at 6:00 pm EDT.  All proceeds will be applied to the needs of the Beauty’s Haven Horses.

Sincerely,

Theresa
