Lucy

BREED:  Mini

GENDER:  Mare

COLOR:  Brown and White

AGE:

Lucy arrived at Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary in the back of a little open flatbed trailer in February, 2013. Kari Bagnall, Founder and Director of the Sanctuary, took Lucy to UF where she was treated for symptoms related to Big Head Disease, also known as Bran Disease. The disease is caused by a diet that is too rich in potassium and insufficient in calcium. Lucy had difficulty with her abilities to breathe, chew and swallow, so a permanent tracheotomy was performed. She was also treated for colic. In the meantime, Kari reached out to Theresa to see if Beauty’s Haven could take Lucy upon her release from the hospital. Theresa agreed and transport was arranged. However, Lucy took at turn for the worse at the hospital and it was suggested by the vets that Lucy be euthanized. When Lucy didn’t arrive at the rescue as it had been planned, Theresa called Kari to find out when Lucy would be arriving. This is when she learned about Lucy’s status and quickly made a trip up to UF to visit with Lucy. After meeting Lucy, talking with the vets, and looking over some of her medical information, Theresa suggested that Lucy be transported to Beauty’s Haven for rehab and Kari agreed. It took a couple of weeks of IV and tube feeding but Lucy came around. By the end of the 3rd week she was able to start chewing again and sip water much better. Her body had been through a lot of changes and medications and just needed some support and time. Lucy is doing very well and is enjoying her life immensely at Beauty’s Haven. Everyone loves Lucy!
