Shadow discovered a lost cat in the paddock this morning. He was such a very good boy – he alerted us to her and then just stood watching over her until we arrived. The poor cat appeared to be blind and/or in shock. Since she looks like a little girl, we are referring to her as a “she.”

A few months ago, when she was an older kitten, approximately three months of age, we saw her go under one of the storage buildings, and, being unable to trap her, we have been leaving out food nightly. And then today, not being familiar with her surroundings, she ran into a corner.

Thanks to Shadow, we were able to catch her and bring her inside, free from the danger of being injured by another animal or being hit by speeding cars and trucks.

One of her ears seems to have been tipped ever so slightly, so she may have very well been a TNR (Trap, Neuter and Release) cat at one time. She is very thin, but thankfully she did eat some wet food. Her ears are full of mites and she has fleas. She’s not comfortable being handled, so we are going to let her rest for now.

We need to take this sweet kitty to the vet in the morning, but need financial help in order to do so. Of course the initial vetting will be quite costly, so any donation, regardless of the amount, would be greatly appreciated. If you are able to donate please mark your donation “for the kitten.”

Donation Total: $50 One Time

We have some very exciting news to share which comes at a perfect time! A very special friend and supporter has offered a most generous $5000 Match Game, whereby all donations up to $5000 will be matched dollar for dollar, provided we can meet our goal by May 25th, 2022.

Once we receive $5000 in donations that are specifically marked for the ‘Match Game,’ the $5000 will morph into $10,000!

As in the past two years, the pandemic continues to play a significant role in our ability to garner donations, and now, coupled with the horrific invasion of Ukraine, many are understandably contributing to the wonderful charities who have boots on the ground in that war-torn nation, to help the brave men, women and children who are so greatly suffering. I so wish that we were in a position to lend assistance to the people of Ukraine as well, but with 35 horses in our care, the majority of which have special needs, and two more returning within the next couple of weeks through no fault of their own, we are simply unable to do so.

Our special needs horses require an abundance of daily care. Some have open tracheas that must be cleaned; horses with respiratory issues and/or who don’t sweat, must be checked multiple times; horses with chronic eye issues must have their eyes cleaned daily, coupled with the constant change of fly masks, and in some cases, medication applied. Boots must be removed and cleaned and feet treated. These are just a few examples of the special attention and care required by our horses, separate from other emergencies which may arise at any time.

What will Match Game Donations Support?

  • Dental care for at least 8 horses, est. $1500.
  • One of the large metal water tanks needs to be replaced: $135
  • Senior grain is now up to $30+ per bag. We go through a bag a day in addition to other feed / hay cubes / forage that is fed.
  • Grazing is what horses do naturally – it’s good for them physically and mentally so we try to keep grass all year around. We try to keep the property free of weeds and we spot treat whenever we can, but with 17+ acres and no time to spare, it is most effective and economical to have the property/paddocks treated by a local company. The cost for this is usually $800 to $1100 depending upon the kind of weeds that are being treated. But this is the time of year that this needs to be accomplished.
  • Items in our medicine cabinet must be replenished at a minimum cost of $1700.
  • The rescue truck needs maintenance at an estimated cost of $1400.
  • The tractor needs maintenance /repairs at an estimated $1500 (at least).
  • The horse and flatbed trailers need maintenance /repairs at an estimated cost of $2000.
  • The back cover of the gooseneck trailer and interior wall / floor mats need to be replaced and /or repaired and routine maintenance needs to be done. Estimated cost is $1400. The roof may also need to be resealed.
  • 8 stall gates (4’) need to be replaced at a cost of $160 per gate.
  • Some paddock gates need to be replaced at a cost of between $225 to $350.
  • The stall mats that line the center aisle of the barn are in need of replacement. They have thankfully, held up well for 12 years, but the corners are turning up which creates a tripping hazard. The cost is approximately $65 per mat. We need 12 including the two at the wash rack.
  • Golf carts are one of the most important tools here and two are in need of servicing, with one needing a new battery at a cost of $750.
  • We need three 20 lb. buckets of psyllium pellets or crumbles each month. Each bucket is about $150.

We depend solely upon the generosity of our supporters to enable us to provide for the needs of all the innocent and beloved animals entrusted to our care. We do apply for grants but with so many needs in the world today, we have not been successful with these for quite some time.

We understand that many of you may not be in a position to donate, but you can still help by sharing our needs with others, and perhaps, with a little testimonial, asking friends and family to offer assistance if they are able to do so. Every dollar makes a difference.

If you wish to assist us in fulfilling our needs, while doubling your contribution at the same time, please click on the “Donate” button below and note it’s for the Match Game.

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of the horses and other animals at Beauty’s Haven.

Warmly,
Theresa

Every year, we try to help a horse in need over the holidays. This year, we are once again asking for your assistance to help two precious souls that have been stuck in a very bad situation for over a year now. Their owner and the ‘system,’ have failed them terribly, for they should have been removed from their home long ago.

One is a gray 22 year-old Thoroughbred mare who won several thousands of dollars during her racing career. She was neglected and starved repeatedly over many years, but she managed to survive. Sadly, some of her herd members were not as lucky.

The other is an older donkey who is very thin and has foundered at some point in the past. She recently had her baby weaned from her. It’s so terribly sad that she was intentionally bred with her feet being in such poor condition.

Both of these sweet girls need everything – a vet exam, bloodwork, x-rays of their front feet, and supplements. They also need an appointment with the equine dentist and farrier.

It is with great hope that x-rays will determine the path we must take in order to help this sweet donkey. I’m concerned that findings may lead to a poor prognosis, but I’m praying for a miracle which will give us the opportunity to make her comfortable and thereby grant her a good quality of life. She’s in good spirits, but obviously quite uncomfortable.

A wonderful friend and supporter has just come forth and has offered to match all donations up to $300 to help them. Initial needs for each will be at least $500 but it may be more depending upon how many x-rays are needed. They also both need ongoing support for their care. You may help by clicking the button below, please note that your contribution is for “Christmas Saves/Match Game.”

Mishka has been having some worrisome issues. Sometimes his feet get packed after it rains which can cause him to become tender footed. We dread this because when we are able to pick up a front foot, he tends to throw it forward rather abruptly which makes it dangerous for the human tending to his needs. And, if we’re lucky enough to get a foot up, we can’t make him keep it up. Trying to maintain proper balance in his feet has always been quite challenging and proper balance is very important.

After a recent rain storm, we discovered Mishka to be lame the next day – he simply would not cooperate in order for us to examine and clean out his feet. After a couple of days, we moved him into Penny’s paddock with Peaches, which is closer to the barn where we could keep a better eye on him and ensure he was drinking enough water. Because the lameness issue arose suddenly, an abscess was suspected – his pulses were not elevated and there was no heat in his feet.

The day before the farrier was to arrive, as I was trimming hair around Mishka’s coronary band, I poked around above his left coronary band a bit with my fingers to see if I’d get a response from him and suddenly, an abscess opened up at his heel. The smell was horrible! While he may have gotten some relief, he wasn’t close to being much better. Because Mishka had been bearing more weight on his right foot due to the abscess in his left, we placed icepacks around the right foot as a precaution. Bearing most of the weight on the right foot could cause laminitis.

We scheduled the vet to come out to do x-rays and we are quite concerned with the findings. Mishka’s front right does have rotation and his side bone has gotten worse in both feet.

Bloodwork done which indicated he was slightly dehydrated. Results from one blood test will not be ready until next week. The farrier came yesterday and, as always, Andrew did the best he could, but to do the job right, and to provide Mishka with balanced feet and shoes, we need stocks. Using boots isn’t an option because we can’t keep his feet up long enough to put them on. Stocks not only enable the handler to restrain a horse without hurting him, but prevent injury to the handler as well.

We have needed stocks for a long time, but now, it is an absolute necessity as we want to keep Mishka as comfortable as possible so he can be with us for many more years.

This isn’t going to be an inexpensive investment but we have faith that, with help from others, we will be able to procure the needed stocks and raise enough funds to cover Mishka’s present and future vet bills and x-rays. We don’t have the recent vet bill yet but Mishka will need additional x-rays and more “hooficures” to make adjustments over the next several weeks. The stocks are about $2400 which includes shipping – other horses will benefit from them as well.

A very dear friend and supporter is offering a most generous Match Game whereby all donations up to $1000 will be matched dollar for dollar!

Our newest arrival, Belle, is a 20 year old Tennessee Walking Horse. She did have a baby last year, but it was her last. Belle had been wearing a halter for the last 18 years and as a result, her hair beneath it has turned gray. After I removed Belle’s halter, she literally hugged me! Belle is significantly underweight and she needs everything – an intake exam, bloodwork, farrier and dental care, deworming, vaccinations, etc. She also needs help with her routine ongoing care, so if anyone would like to sponsor her on a monthly basis, it would be so greatly appreciated.

A very special friend and supporter has come forth to offer a most thoughtful and generous Match Game for Belle, whereby all donations up to $500 will be matched dollar for dollar. If you would like to participate, donations may be forwarded by clicking on the ‘Donate’ button below. If there is a place in which to designate your donation, please note ‘Match Game for Belle.’

A few days ago, our little herd had a meeting along the fence line and decided that they wanted to do something special in honor of Mommy Theresa’s birthday which is on March 23rd. When three wonderful aunties came forth and offered a trio of Match Games, it was decided right then and there that a Birthday Match Game Fundraiser would be a perfect way in which to celebrate their beloved mommy’s birthday!

Match Game

Remi, our baby donkey, came to me several days ago with a special request from Hope. At some point either Freckles or Jerry the Giraffe told Remi and Hope about our precious baby calf, also named Hope, who arrived at Beauty’s Haven in April, 2019. Everyone adored Baby Hope, a spirited little calf who had an incredible will to live. A link to Chapter One of her story can be found by clicking HERE.

When Hope, our little mini filly, arrived this past December it took me quite some time to call her by her name without thinking about our little calf, Baby Hope. At times it made me very sad as precious Baby Hope meant the world to us and we miss her so very much to this very day. She was so truly loved.

Hope the mini’s personality began to shine as she was recovering from her colic surgery and I couldn’t help but think how incredibly spirited, bold, carefree, and independent she is.

Volunteers oftentimes comment about how sassy she is. I frequently tell her that she’s our “Little Sassy Pants!”

Back to Remi’s special request from Hope. Hope wants to know if we can just call her “Sassy.” It works for the rest of us and it truly fits her perfectly. So Sassy it is, and she already responds to her new name!

If you click on Miss Sassy Pants’s image above, you will see a video which perfectly captures her amazing spirit, made possible by each and every one of you, who helped grant her a second chance at life. Sassy is yet another Beauty’s Haven miracle!

A New Match Game

A wonderful friend and supporter has come forth to assist with our farrier and hay needs. We are so very thankful, as due to these precarious times, donations have been down for quite some time. The good news is that all donations up to $500 will be matched dollar-for-dollar, so if you wish to help sponsor a “hooficure” or contribute toward our hay needs, it would be so very much appreciated by horses, donkeys and humans alike. Just click on the ‘Donate’ button below and note that your donation is for our “Hooficures” and/or “Hay Match Game.”

It’s me, Hope! Did you know that on Thursday, a ‘controlled burn’ happened next door and went out of control and flames came over to our farm? It was so scary because it was very windy. I became less scared when Mommy Theresa told me that I did a great job helping to raise money for our hay run last week! It made me feel really good so I asked Auntie Jeanne if I could help again this week and she said, ‘Yes!’ We go through lots of hay during the wintertime because the grass does not grow so, if anyone would like to help with this week’s hay run, it would make me and all of my horsey and donkey friends (and Mommy Theresa) so very happy! And guess what? A very special Auntie has offered to match all donations up to $500!

Love,
Hope

I have an announcement to make!!!! Are you ready to listen up? Did you know that I have a new big brother and a big sister? I do! They arrived last night and I can’t wait to meet them! Mommy Theresa said they’re really nice. Their human mommy passed away and they needed a place to go – isn’t that sad? We’ll make them feel right at home. Stay tuned – I’ll tell you more about them after the morning busys around here! That means it will probably be late afternoon. We’ll post pictures too!

Love,
Hope
