November 25th – 26th, 2013 Update

November 25th

Dayo is on board now with Pine Valley Acres Transport (http://www.pinevalleyacres.com/transportation.html) on his way home to his human Deborah Snow in Maryland. It was hard to see him off for the last time. We had to load him on Pam’s trailer and then she helped transfer him onto the transport trailer (it was too big to get to where Dayo was living) at another location. It was a wonderful experience to be able to help and work with Dayo until he could go home. My time with him will always be remembered and treasured. He is accepting human touch now even though he is unsure. He needs to be brave – his entire world is changing. God bless you Dayo! Thank you, Deborah, for giving him a home and a chance. And yes, I’m going to be a nervous wreck until he unloads and settles in his new home.

Dayo has come a long way. He’s a good boy. Not a mean bone in his body.

He will make a very nice horse – he has an Arabian mind and heart.

And he is accepting of human touch now. I miss him, already.

Boo is almost as big as her momma! Daisy’s tumors have started to grow again. Another type of chemo has been started. Please continue to pray for her recovery.

November 26th

Dayo is home! Thank God and Pine Valley!

Mollie and Dr. Julia today.

Mollies eyes are doing well. Her HR and RR are still elevated. Her blood work came back and it’s better. It was a mess last week. The IV catheter has been removed and she is done with her antibiotics. It’s hard to believe she’s at least 3 years old. She’s pretty stunted. Dr. Julia did some work on Mollie and she felt even better by the time Dr. Julia finished her treatment. She is now happily munching on hay under her shelter. Now, let’s pray that she continues to improve and that she isn’t pregnant.

She’s not feeling great but she’s feeling better. She’s gained some weight too.

It was a very exciting day here this past Friday! Dr. Julia Simonson arranged for Janek Vluggen to visit Beauty’s Haven to work with Betsy Rose and Bella! Janek Vluggen D.O., MRO-EU, EDO® is from Germany and is recognized as the leading expert in the field of modern Equine Osteopathy. To say that I was amazed, would be an understatement! This was taken today of Betsy Rose running with Bronson! It’s short, but it will make you smile!

I got to ride today! If only for a few minutes. We don’t have any draft tack but a halter and lead rope was just fine.

We are an all volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit equine rescue organization that operates totally off of donations from the public – we are not funded by County, State, or Federal funds. BH Weekend Update On Oh So Many!

November 24th – 25th, 2013

We found a blanket for Mollie to wear tonight – the cold snuck up on us! It’s a bit small but her new one should arrive this week. Her eyes look better. Dr. Ryan will be out tomorrow to examine her again and do more blood work to see how… she’s progressing. Her appetite is good but she’s running a little bit of a temperature. She’s still on IV antibiotics and gets other supplements as well. You can see the Arabian in her – she’s a proud little girl and we’re very proud of her! She’s a fighter! I’m so glad she held on and that she never gave up – she had been on the ground overnight and until we got to her that day. She deserves everything she’s been deprived of, and more. Her stunted growth is some evidence of her past. Like Betsy Rose, we’ll do our best to make sure all of Mollie’s tomorrow’s are what her past should have been. We love you Mollie!

This is Classy. We had to take her to UF a few years ago because she had to have a permanent tracheotomy. She can’t whinny because of it. She’s a very sweet mare.

Peggy Sue – she’s so cute! She can’t bend her back left leg. Her pelvis was fractured in 3 places when her breeder/owner pulled a baby from her years ago. Peggy Sue is adorable! She’s lost a few lbs which is a good thing!

Gentleman – he’s an icon here that is simply a treasure. He’s an older Percheron that we pray is with us for many more years to come. He’s loved so much!

CJ is doing very well. He will be looking for a home as a pasture pal. He’s beautiful.

Garan is still looking for a home! He’s handsome, funny, and loving!

It would be really nice if Ceri and Garan found a forever home together! They are both really nice registered Arabians.

This is Indy’s Rising Son. We call him Indy. He’s had a good year of training under him and is looking for a home. He’s not going to be a big boy even though his mom was a Percheron cross. His past is a sad one even though he was born here.

Can’t forget Little E! He’s an elderly Arabian – another that everyone adores!

November 21st – 23rd, 2013 Update

November 21st

Mollie’s left eye is better. The right one slightly better. She’s out and about walking for a bit this morning. So glad the weather is better. She really needs to get moving.

Like Betsy Rose, Mollie has learned that the sling is there to help her. She is very good about standing still when we remove the sling or when we are putting it back on her.

Many thanks to Kim Foster and her daughter, Susan Moon for helping out today! And they brought gifts! I felt bad having to run out on them but I had 3 medical appointments in Gainesville. I have bunches to do and then I’m calling it a day. Tomorrow will be here soon.

November 22nd

Mollie – getting stronger! She’s out of the sling full time now! Her eyes are still cloudy but better. She’s a very sweet girl – I’m so glad she has a fighting spirit. Mollie has a long road ahead of her and I will feel better once we get into week 4 of her rehab. Thank you all for caring about this special little girl.

November 20th, 2013 Evening Update

Dr. Ryan will be back out tomorrow to examine Mollie’s eyes again and to run more blood work. Mollie is still passing sand in her poop. Her appetite is great. She didn’t get much exercise today because of the weather.

Mollie’s eyes are both cloudy. She’s pretty good about getting her eye meds, thankfully.

Fiona is so sweet. She’s come so far in trust – she approaches and follows me now. Her and Dayo come running when they hear me call (likely because they know they are about to get hay) out to them. The sound of them running across the pasture is simply awesome. If all goes well, both will be at their new homes next week. This has been quite the adventure!

Betsy Rose – what a determined little mare. She was skin on bones and it’s amazing she survived. She has been nothing but determined to make it through her rehab and recovery. She is a great source of encouragement for us. She believes… This photo was taken back in July.

November 18th, 2013 Update

I’m on my way out the door for a dental appt but want to start everyone’s day here with a smile. Remember Vegas (aka Sonny)? He’s a happy boy! The young lady looks pretty happy too.

Mollie Nov 18th -20th, 2013 Update

November 18th, 2013

I called Dr. Ryan out to look at Mollie’s eyes again. One was swollen yesterday and the vet advised us to apply antibiotic ointment throughout the day/night which we do. But today I noticed a spot in the other eye. She has ulcerations in both eyes. We are now treating both eyes with a couple of meds. Mollie’s temp is up a little today and her HR is a bit higher. Dr. Ryan has prescribed Mollie a couple of antibiotics for the next few days that we’ll give via IV.

Pam Freeman visited today and look what Mollie got to keep her company – a new friend! I apologize for the photo being fuzzy – I was multi-tasking. Pam brought us pizza for lunch! Thank you so much Pam – that was quite the drive! So glad you got to meet the horses!

Ask and ye shall receive…. Judy came to sit with Mollie for awhile.

November 19th

 

 

Mollie has been up and about on her own for the last 3 hours now! Dr. Ryan oiled her again today. Here she is getting ready to get her medications.

Mollie was very good for Dr. Ryan today. She’s always a good girl. Both eyes have ulcers but are being treated. Please continue to pray for her recovery. Thank you all!

November 20th

Dental Day for CJ – Update on Matilda, Cookie, CaryLou, Betsy Rose

November 13th – 14th, 2013

Dr. Bess was here yesterday and got a few horses done – including CJ. He needs sponsors – would anyone like to be a monthly or one time sponsor to help him?

CaryLou – he’s still a hoot! The mini’s all have the fuzzies and are well insulated for the cold.

This is Matilda – she is about 18 years old. Would anyone like to help us to help her? Her rehab is going well – when she arrived a few weeks ago, she was very thin and she had a few other issues. Her teeth are worn down to almost nothing. She eats a LOT and gets a soft mash 3 times a day. Below is a “before” picture and a current picture. Mollie & Betsy Rose Have Much in Common

November 18th, 2013

I’m very happy to report that Betsy Rose is doing well! No more choke issues. She is simply the cutest little mare I’ve ever met. It’s a true blessing to have her here with us!  You can’t help but to feel a strong, positive, inquisitive, and caring energy when around her.

Regarding Mollie – it was a long night last night. The rain just wouldn’t let up. Well, it would and when we thought it was over, it would rain again. Just a light mist sometimes, but enough that we had to put sandbags around Mollie to keep the rain from running on her. We’d roll her over and help her to go sternum. She’d eat a little, sleep some, and wake up renewed and thrash to get up. It’s so hard to see them when they are like that. Her left eye was swollen by daylight and she had made a couple of “bed sores” worse. She had a sheet under her head, but when she thrashes, the sheet gets moved and there is just no stopping her – it can be dangerous for humans trying to help her. One clip of a hoof can cause injury if you’re within kicking range. She’d toss her head back and if you’re within range that can hurt too – I’m wearing a good size bruise on my leg to prove it. LOL

The vet oiled Mollie again this am. She was pretty tired and didn’t need to be sedated which was good because our plans were to get her up and into the sling after the vet left. Her blood work indicates that her organs appear to be ok but she has a lot of low values that we will be working on. She got more fluids today with some vitamins, B12, etc. After passing poop with sand in it, she is now passing oil.

Mollie took a good rest after the vet left. And then, with the help of many, we encouraged her to stand. We were surprised by a neighbor that brought muffins, biscuits, and coffee for breakfast. It was such a nice thing – totally unexpected.

Mollie is weak but strong in her heart.

We introduced the sling to Mollie and distracted her a little while we got her all hooked up and secured. We walked her just a bit – her back end is starting to come to life.  She has very little muscle.

Mollie got groomed and loved on and her sores were treated.  Like Betsy Rose, she is another “makes you feel really good” little girl. When I think about how she has lived, and almost died, it makes me so sad.

We know about Mollie but, sadly, there are many that we will never know about. But thanks to all of you and your support, like Betsy Rose, Mollie has a chance.  I think she’s going to give it her all and pull through this. I can’t thank everyone enough who came out to help today – it was a true blessing. Bob and I are both beat – I can’t imagine how we would have managed without the extra help.

Mollie was so happy to be up. The Arabian in her just shines! I adore Arabians – I love all breeds but Arabians have my heart. The connection I feel with them is something I can’t explain – it’s very strong and uncomplicated. They speak so loudly without saying a word. It is one of the most wonderful things you could experience, IMO. My mare, Beauty, is an Arabian and it’s because of her that Beauty’s Haven came to be.

Mollie is drinking on her own – she likes Horse Quencher in her water. She is passing oil. She has a wonderful appetite – we pretty much use the UC Davis guidelines for a refeeding program, adjusting as necessary. But everything is slow and steady. Her eye is better this evening, but still a bit swollen.

Another surprise – Diane brought us a hot dinner and took care of Mollie this evening so we could sit and enjoy it! She doted on Mollie too – it’s just a natural thing to do.

Please Pray for Mollie

Theresa went to a farm near Chiefland, Florida this morning to respond to a call that came late last night.  A little Arabian yearling filly had been down since yesterday evening. Her pasture mate, a colt, was rescued by another organization but the filly was left behind as she was down and too weak to stand. A neighbor said the filly was laying in the road after the colt was taken away and he dragged her into the driveway for the night.  Since Chiefland is more than an hour away from Beauty’s Haven, and Betsy Rose was suffering from choke, Theresa had to wait until morning to make the trip. Needless to say, Theresa spent a sleepless night worrying about the little filly.

Theresa checked the filly immediately upon arrival. She is in very bad condition but Theresa believes that there is hope.  She named the filly Mollie.

It didn’t take long before Theresa and Kylie had Mollie loaded – time was of the essence.  When they arrived back at Beauty’s Haven, the vet was there waiting.

Mollie was gently pulled out of the trailer.  There wasn’t much life left in her but we don’t give up easily.  Fluids were ran and Mollie was oiled.

The vet had a hard time tubing Mollie because of mud and sand she had ingested.  The poor girl was in bad shape.

Once the fluids got to working we were able to get her sternum.  She’d been down for over 24 hours.

Mollie has light in her eyes – she is trying.

After giving Mollie some time to regroup after receiving fluids, with help from others, they were able to get Mollie up for a short walk to the quarantine paddock. She needs prayers and good thoughts – she’s not out of the woods by far.

Theresa says you can definitely tell that Mollie is an Arabian!  Her spirit is strong even though her body is broken.  Assistance from friends in the community was very much appreciated!

Mollie is down for the night but is now able to go sternum on her own. Someone will be with her through the night and she will be rolled over every couple of hours.  She needs prayers and good thoughts – she’s not out of the woods by far.

It Wasn’t Me So Says Betsy Rose!

“It wasn’t me! I’d never think about getting into the breakfast meals!” so said Betsy Rose Sunday morning while I was loading up the golf cart with many tubs of feed, flymasks, etc. for my morning chores. I could never get upset with anything she does. Ever. She just makes you smile no matter what she is doing!  There’s just a beautiful aura about her – always!
