Betsy Rose and Freckles grazing as horses should. They are happy girls. #BFF

Betsy Rose can’t see very well but she has great hearing and she loves to talk! I mean, you can literally hold a conversation with her!

Bouie and Frodo made a break out yesterday – the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. LOL

Little Lily and her mom, Ebony, also took off. Like any of these 4 really need to gain any weight. Frodo wanted all of the grass to himself so he tried to chase them off – hopefully he ran off some calories.

Sisco had SCC when he came to us months ago. But he is doing well. We’ve been able to give him many months of a happy life and hopefully many more years to come.

Another Beauty’s Haven horse that we brought to Beauty’s Haven from a horrible situation last year. She landed in the arms of an angel. Thank you Jordan! Starlight grazing.

Starlight and Jordan!

Just look at beautiful Sienna! Thank you Kathy & Jamie!

This is Sienna the day we rescued her along with Dingolay (Layla) and Tonka back in May 2009.

And look at Legacy! Thank you, Jan Braakman for giving him the home and love he so deserves! Legacy came to us only a few days old in November 2009.

“Good morning everybody! Guess what – guess what – guess what????? Me and Freckles slept in my stall last night – no sling!! I fell asleep listening to Freckles tell stories to the cute little baby donkey. It felt so good to lay all the way down and I slept really good! I still need a good brushing to get the shavings off of me. But now I’m hungry – here comes Mommy Theresa serving breakfast so I gotta go! Have a great day everyone!”
Betsy Rose

Our little Betsy Rose has crossed another milestone. She did well through the night. She laid down on her right side and got up fine (she’s blind in that eye). However, this morning around 5:15, she laid down on her left side (blind side up) and couldn’t get up on her own. She didn’t panic – just waited for us to help her. So, we’ll be doing some exercises for flexibility and teaching Betsy Rose to roll over on the right side which will allow her to get up. Oh, Freckles is still sleeping – I think she told stories most of the night to Baby Donk.

“Guess what Mommy Theresa?  There’s a new Shelter Challenge Contest!!  We need to remind everyone to vote for Beautys Haven starting now and then every day thru Oct 13th!  Think of how much $10,000 could help with winter hay and lots and lots of carrots and watermelon!  Here’s the link where people vote: http://www.shelterchallenge.com/web/charityusa/nomineehome?userId=16660&nomineeId=13994#sthash.BvKkY4gQ.gbpl.

“Good morning everyone! Betsy Rose here! I wanted to pop in and thank everyone for caring about me and my friend, Freckles. Guess what? We have presents to open today! I saw a couple of boxes Mommy Theresa put in the tack room and wondered what they were. We get to find out later today! Anyway, I just wanted thank everyone.

If you don’ t mind, please take a minute to vote for us on the TSC and Bank contests. With your help I believe we CAN win! I know it would take a lot of worry off Mommy Theresa’s plate. I heard her say the cold season is coming and we’re going to need a lot of hay. And if you ask your family and friends to vote, that would help a lot. I’m alive today because a lot of you helped with my care – many good things can happen when we all work together. Mommy Theresa says it takes a village! I believe we can win – please, believe with me and vote!”

“Remember when I came here I said, “I CAN DO THIS!? Well I am doing it – and I want to help other horses by telling the world about what happened to me. I have to go now – it’s feeding time – but I’ll be back later. Have a good day!”

Betsy Rose - I Can Do This!

Betsy Rose laid down and got up all by herself!!!!!

WE ARE SO PROUD OF BETSY ROSE!  This is the little mare that “did!”

She got up on her own!

We won’t get much sleep tonight – Betsy Rose does NOT want to be tucked in her sling. She will be on the monitor by the bed so we can see her all of the time and I’m sure I’ll have my eyes on it most of the night! This is a big night Big for her and her BFF Freckles is still jumping around for joy!

Believe!

Last Evening

I need some help here. I can’t go into details as this case is still unfolding. But would anyone be willing to pledge to help this horse? He’s down and can’t get up – another Betsy Rose. The same vet who treated Betsy Rose initially is available. It’s been raining – the horse needs a vet to get treated or he needs to be humanely euthanized – this is horrific. Another vet determined a couple of days ago that the horse did not need to be seized. I am sick. Pledges anyone? This can’t wait until tomorrow.

This Morning

Our response team is on the way. The horse did ok through the night. The vet and authorities will be there too. We need angels of strength to help him up to get into the trailer. Dr. Natalie says he wants to. His vitals are not bad.

Please pray and picture him up and standing. This was him several days ago. Pray he can stand now in order to get in the trailer and make it here to the rescue.

Dr. Natalie just relayed to me that she will call me in a few minutes. I think we are moving to Plan B – loading him by stretcher – the trailer has a ramp on it. Will update soon.

Later in the Morning

I am sitting here in tears. Tears of anger, sorrow, and frustration. I’m sorry it took so long for a good update but a lot has been going on. Chance took a turn for the worse. After another rectal, observation, treatment, etc. Dr. Natalie believes he’s gone septic. He grew uncomfortable and is now showing signs of pain. He has a toxic line, his heart rate rose dramatically. He has given it a good fight. The decision has been made to help him to humanely cross Rainbow Bridge. He will not be alone. I have no more words at this time. But know that this isn’t over. Thank you all. Chance – we all love you.

Noonish

We couldn’t leave Chance’s friend behind. But it wasn’t easy getting him released – it’s still an open case with the authorities, thankfully.

This Afternoon

“Welcome to our Beauty’s Haven family – we love you already. I’m so sorry you had to watch your friend slowly starve to death but at least today you were able to see him be loved on by humans that care. And you were able to see that he peacefully crossed Rainbow Bridge. He is now running with the Heavenly Herd in green grass with a whole body again. In this picture I see you are standing there with Chance on the ground nearby – we will make sure he is properly buried. He knows you cared about him and he left knowing you would be going to a good place where you will never experience this again. You’ll be here soon and the QT paddock is all yours. You’ll have hay and all the love you ever could imagine. He would want you to go on and have a good life. Chance will never be forgotten. And I promise you, there will be voices heard about what happened to you both.

Feeling better now that this boy is here and munching on hay under the shelter in the QT paddock. We will figure out a new name for him as we get to know him. I like to learn their personality and we don’t like to use a name that we’ve already used in the past. The weather is horrible but he seems pretty content. He’s very sweet and I’m so glad we didn’t have to leave him behind. Everyone involved in helping last night and today did an awesome job! THANK YOU EVERYONE!

He needs a little rehab but he’s only about 10 years old – he should do just fine. He is a Saddlebred/Arabian cross (National Show Horse) and is really sweet.

Some rain rot, underweight, feet haven’t been done in awhile, not sure about his teeth yet but we’ll get him all checked out. I’m very relieved he is here. And I am very sorry that we couldn’t offer Chance the same.

As Chance crossed Rainbow Bridge this morning, butterflies surrounded him together with people who knew him for only a few short hours, yet cared deeply about him. A sure sign that it was meant to be and that he was finally at peace.

Thank you all for your continued love and support.

Sincerely,
Theresa

August 14th, 2013

Betsy Rose had a good day yesterday. She is now out of her sling for about 14 hours each day! Dr. Bess Darrow (Tune-Ups Equine Dentistry) will be here later today to wore a bit more on her teeth and then she should be able to graze which I know she will love! She pretty much has quit even trying to graze – she can’t grind her teeth to chew so she’s and working for nothing. LOL She’s a smart pony!

This Afternoon:

Betsy Rose did great for Dr. Bess! As soon as the sun goes down, she’ll be out of her sling and we’ll see how she does on grass. It will be the first time in years that she’ll be able to actually grind/chew. The heat has been horrid today, so we left her in the sling with fans and the mister on her. She is, totally, spoiled.

Betsy Rose – seeing is believing!  She’s like a little lawn mower! She hasn’t picked her head up since she realized she can actually chew and swallow!!! She brings back flashbacks of good times when our human kids were growing up! The many “firsts” that we experienced! Little things that mean so much.

Cookie received a package yesterday with some nice surprises! She LOVES getting presents! Thank you Kathy Malloy, Donna Trest, Becca Bazhaw Mead and the Equine Cancer Society! And many thanks to everyone who helped Cookie via the raffle by the Equine Cancer Society! Cookie is doing wonderful. Now, let’s pray she continues to do well and that Divinity will follow in her footsteps and do well also! Uh oh – I was just told that more packages have arrived!

Oh my gosh look at this!!!!! Cookie got a beautiful and personalized fly mask that provides extra protection from the sun which was made by Equinesunvisor.com! Thank you Becca and the Equine Cancer Society!!!

Before calling it a day I’d like to ask everyone to include Divi in your prayers tonight. Tomorrow afternoon, she will be going to the hospital. I pray for a good prognosis and many more happy years ahead for her.

August 9th – 11th, 2013

Dr. Julia came to visit with Betsy Rose on Friday.  Penny greeted Dr. Julia as usual – she ran alongside her car until it was parked and then went right around to greet her.

After a few scratches, off we went to see Betsy Rose.  Well, she wasn’t where I left her.  We walked around the barn and no Betsy.  We called for her.  Then we heard it – an itty bitty whinny.  Guess where we found her?  In the shavings room where we keep a couple of bales of hay – she had helped herself and made a mess in the process!  But it was all good – it just means she’s ready to get her back teeth done! Dr. Bess will be here on Wednesday to finish her up!
Betsy Rose – slowly but surely gaining.  She’s up to about 273 lbs.

I know this picture is fuzzy but do you see something you’ve never seen before?  Yes, Betsy Rose is now swishing her tail! Muscle is returning!  It took weeks before she could even lift her tail to go poop.  Now she is able to swish!  So proud of this little mare!!!

“Mommy Theresa says a lot of humans think that we are adorable Freckles!”

Penny is hilarious! “Please Dr. Julia – just one little kiss on the nose?”

Penny knows that Auntie Karen Andreu brings apples! That’s Sisco in the back – he got apples too.

Solace after breakfast. Gentleman and Little E are in the background beneath a tree that has an overhead mister in it.  The misters help tremendously – wish we had more trees and misters but we are very thankful for the ones we do have.  When we moved here a few years ago, we had no trees and it was miserable with no shade.  Shade is a true blessing.

Solace got a bath today by one of our awesome volunteers – Katherine Rivera!

Genesis enjoying the shade of another tree.

Garran and Little E – both Arabian geldings.

This evening, I played with Beauty for the first time since she foundered and rotated earlier this year! For months, it was thought she wouldn’t be able to go back to work but I never stopped believing in her.  She needs some conditioning, but that’s ok – she’s sound!  Having patience can be hard sometimes, but it was well worth the wait!  Beauty is the reason Beauty’s Haven came to be!  I’m so happy!

August 6th, 2013

I forgot to share this last night. I was in the feed room getting ready to start tucking horses in and I look up and who do I see looking back in at me? Yes, Betsy Rose. She’s never wandered into the barn aisle way before – we had a long… talk about that a few weeks ago and how I’d prefer her stay away from it because if she were to fall on the concrete it would hurt. And she did – she never tried to walk into the barn when she was out of her sling. Until last evening. She walked right in and stood outside of the door waiting for me to come out. I think she’s getting better.

Betsy Rose

CaryLou, his true colors.
