We’re putting the FUN in Fundraising!

Fans of our beloved Beauty’s Haven herd of rescued equines, felines and canines, you’re going to LOVE this FUNdraiser! Starting immediately, for each suggested donation of $5, you will get the opportunity to become the recipient of a beautiful original art print featuring members of our rescue family.

What could be better? Well, a Match Game! A generous supporter has offered to match all donations up to $500. This is a perfect way to double your impact while making an incredible difference in the life of each and every animal here at the rescue.

The fine art print, produced from an original painting by Bruno Belesso, was very kindly donated by a friend of the rescue. Reminiscent of the folk-art style of Grandma Moses, it features Betsy Rose, Hope, Little E, Gentleman, Jake, Max, Cookie, Duke, Solace, Penny, Kitty Cat, Mila and Sisco in the clouds, and Beauty, JoJo, Jazzy, Sassy, Shadow, Peggy Sue, Lucy, Aaleyah Belle, Peaches, Chloe, Magic, Frodo, Ace, Mishka, Oreo and Ruby on the grass.

What will we do with your donation?

Pay $435 for our last round of farrier visits, which commence again this week at a cost of $1080
Apply it toward the remaining bales of alfalfa needed for Gabe, Jo and Dancer, coupled with this week’s hay run for their current need as well as one ton of Coastal for the other members of our beloved herd at $705
Pay our equine dentist, with whom we have an outstanding balance
Use $510 to repair our UTV, critically important to the day-to-day work at the rescue

Mending Fences Part II

Over the past many weeks we have been replacing broken fence boards which has been quite the task! We are very grateful to those that donated to help make the paddocks safer for the horses. Our next phase is electric tape. We have spliced and done what we can with what we have, but we need to replace about 1600′ of 1.5″ electric tape. The image on the lower right above depicts the quality of the fencing, and while one can find less expensive tape but it won’t hold up as well – this tape has a 20 year warranty and it contains 15 strands of 12-millimeter stainless steel wire.

The tape in Magic’s (stallion) paddock needs to be replaced as does a couple of our south paddock fence lines. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated. The total amount needed to get this done is $259.90.

Mindi, a discarded mule in need

She gave 15+ years of service to her humans. Once she was too old to keep up the pace, they showed their gratitude by discarding her. Sadly, this happens a lot. She’s thin. Her skin is very unhealthy. She has scars from the heavy tack she wore while working. I’m sure her teeth are also in need of attention. We have named her Mindi.

We were a bit concerned about Mindi by mid-afternoon after we brought her in. She hadn’t passed any poop and wasn’t drinking nearly enough but she wasn’t dehydrated. She did seem a bit uncomfortable. Her temperature was normal but her respiration was high. We gave her some electrolytes and Ulcergard. She looked totally exhausted and finally laid down and took a late afternoon nap. When she woke up she looked better which made me feel better. She finally went poop which made us all feel better.

After her nap, she got a good grooming. I wanted to give her a bath but she’s in quarantine for a couple of weeks. Her skin is pretty unhealthy but this will improve. She obviously hasn’t been getting good nutrition. The vet will be out in the morning and I’ll update when I can.

We are requesting donations to help to address Mindi’s initial needs: an examination, bloodwork, fecal testing, dental, quality hay, etc. She also needs monthly sponsors for her ongoing care. Traumatized and Lost

Shadow discovered a lost cat in the paddock this morning. He was such a very good boy – he alerted us to her and then just stood watching over her until we arrived. The poor cat appeared to be blind and/or in shock. Since she looks like a little girl, we are referring to her as a “she.”

A few months ago, when she was an older kitten, approximately three months of age, we saw her go under one of the storage buildings, and, being unable to trap her, we have been leaving out food nightly. And then today, not being familiar with her surroundings, she ran into a corner.

Thanks to Shadow, we were able to catch her and bring her inside, free from the danger of being injured by another animal or being hit by speeding cars and trucks.

One of her ears seems to have been tipped ever so slightly, so she may have very well been a TNR (Trap, Neuter and Release) cat at one time. She is very thin, but thankfully she did eat some wet food. Her ears are full of mites and she has fleas. She’s not comfortable being handled, so we are going to let her rest for now.

We need to take this sweet kitty to the vet in the morning, but need financial help in order to do so. Of course the initial vetting will be quite costly, so any donation, regardless of the amount, would be greatly appreciated. If you are able to donate please mark your donation “for the kitten.”

A Perfect Time!

We have some very exciting news to share which comes at a perfect time! A very special friend and supporter has offered a most generous $5000 Match Game, whereby all donations up to $5000 will be matched dollar for dollar, provided we can meet our goal by May 25th, 2022.

Once we receive $5000 in donations that are specifically marked for the ‘Match Game,’ the $5000 will morph into $10,000!

As in the past two years, the pandemic continues to play a significant role in our ability to garner donations, and now, coupled with the horrific invasion of Ukraine, many are understandably contributing to the wonderful charities who have boots on the ground in that war-torn nation, to help the brave men, women and children who are so greatly suffering. I so wish that we were in a position to lend assistance to the people of Ukraine as well, but with 35 horses in our care, the majority of which have special needs, and two more returning within the next couple of weeks through no fault of their own, we are simply unable to do so.

Our special needs horses require an abundance of daily care. Some have open tracheas that must be cleaned; horses with respiratory issues and/or who don’t sweat, must be checked multiple times; horses with chronic eye issues must have their eyes cleaned daily, coupled with the constant change of fly masks, and in some cases, medication applied. Boots must be removed and cleaned and feet treated. These are just a few examples of the special attention and care required by our horses, separate from other emergencies which may arise at any time.

What will Match Game Donations Support?

Dental care for at least 8 horses, est. $1500.
One of the large metal water tanks needs to be replaced: $135
Senior grain is now up to $30+ per bag. We go through a bag a day in addition to other feed / hay cubes / forage that is fed.
Grazing is what horses do naturally – it’s good for them physically and mentally so we try to keep grass all year around. We try to keep the property free of weeds and we spot treat whenever we can, but with 17+ acres and no time to spare, it is most effective and economical to have the property/paddocks treated by a local company. The cost for this is usually $800 to $1100 depending upon the kind of weeds that are being treated. But this is the time of year that this needs to be accomplished.
Items in our medicine cabinet must be replenished at a minimum cost of $1700.
The rescue truck needs maintenance at an estimated cost of $1400.
The tractor needs maintenance /repairs at an estimated $1500 (at least).
The horse and flatbed trailers need maintenance /repairs at an estimated cost of $2000.
The back cover of the gooseneck trailer and interior wall / floor mats need to be replaced and /or repaired and routine maintenance needs to be done. Estimated cost is $1400. The roof may also need to be resealed.
8 stall gates (4’) need to be replaced at a cost of $160 per gate.
Some paddock gates need to be replaced at a cost of between $225 to $350.
The stall mats that line the center aisle of the barn are in need of replacement. They have thankfully, held up well for 12 years, but the corners are turning up which creates a tripping hazard. The cost is approximately $65 per mat. We need 12 including the two at the wash rack.
Golf carts are one of the most important tools here and two are in need of servicing, with one needing a new battery at a cost of $750.
We need three 20 lb. buckets of psyllium pellets or crumbles each month. Each bucket is about $150.

We depend solely upon the generosity of our supporters to enable us to provide for the needs of all the innocent and beloved animals entrusted to our care. We do apply for grants but with so many needs in the world today, we have not been successful with these for quite some time.

We understand that many of you may not be in a position to donate, but you can still help by sharing our needs with others, and perhaps, with a little testimonial, asking friends and family to offer assistance if they are able to do so. Every dollar makes a difference.

Such a very good girl!

Peggy Sue has a back leg that she is unable to bend (the humans in her previous home had tried to ‘help’ her deliver her baby years ago and her pelvis fractured in several places), so we have to place her in a sling for her hooficures. As you can see in the above image, she is such a very good girl for the farrier. Peggy Sue is just one member of our little herd who is on the farrier list this week. Others scheduled to receive a hooficure within the next few days, include Bouie, Frodo, Ebony, Lily, CaryLou, Lucy, Luigi, Warrior, Misti, Sassy, Simba, JoJo and Jazzy.

The average cost of a farrier visit per horse/ donkey is $33.

Open Wide!

Peggy Sue, Luiji, Cloud, Nickers and Lucy are on the dental treatment list (Dr. Bess Darrow of Tune Ups Veterinary Equine Dentistry). Nadia, Venus, and many other members of our little herd will also be scheduled for their dental examinations in the upcoming week. We estimate each treatment to be approximately $125 to $200 per horse depending upon the work that needs to be performed, coupled with the amount of sedation required. Any donations beyond the amount needed for the upcoming visit will be set aside in our “Happy Teeth Fund,” an escrow account for future dental needs.

Our beloved Oreo

Oreo was a kitten when rescued 15 years ago from a taped up cardboard box left in a parking lot. He settled in at our rescue with another rescued kitten, Kitty Cat. Both were barn mousers. Oreo is friends with all 35 of our rescued equines and our volunteers simply adore him.

When we lost Kitty Cat last year to mast cell tumors, Oreo became deeply depressed. Afterwards, he lost much weight due to hyperthyroidism which was successfully treated. He was doing well, but then developed an ear infection which has been treated over many months.

After additional testing, it was determined that Oreo needs surgery to remove a tumor from his ear canal. His prognosis with this surgery is excellent.
