She Never Gave Up!

Aaleyah Belle is back at the rescue! Colic can happen at any time and I still cannot believe that we lost Oasis a couple of weeks ago to this insidious condition. And then it hit Aaleyah Belle out of the blue! Aaleyah so loves life and I am so very grateful that she got through this. She never gave up! Life can truly change in a blink of an eye. Thank you, all, so very much, for your good thoughts and prayers. We have been blessed many times with answered prayers. This is yet another blessing.

A Message from JoJo as Idalia Approaches

Yesterday afternoon, JoJo was concerned because he heard a hurricane might be coming – he saw a kayak on Frosty’s Knoll and Lucy wearing a snorkel. Well, we definitely have a hurricane coming and Lucy was definitely in a snorkel, but I was really proud of her because she was already wearing her EquestriSafe ID collar! We have a ton of things to get done in a short period of time and I’m very thankful that we have collars for the other horses and the dogs.

The hay trailers are empty – we need to make two hay runs and get a load of shavings ASAP in advance of Idalia. If anyone can help we’d really appreciate it. We need to raise $1600.

Match Game!

Thank you to everyone who has donated a fence board(s) thus far, but we do have a way to go with 31 boards still needed at a cost of $14.50 per board. The good news is that we are almost halfway there!

We are also truly pleased to announce that a dear friend and supporter has come forth and has offered to match all donations up to $450 designated for the fence boards. Any overage will be applied to filling the in-ground Propane tank that feeds two generators so they will be ready for potential hurricanes.

A Board for the Horses

The rescue (17.5 acres) has no-climb fencing around its perimeter with top boards and electrical tape. As boards have a tendency to expand during the summer season, they quickly become stressed and many, unfortunately, break, which creates a very hazardous environment for our ‘Velvet Nosers.’

A number of paddocks, as well as the arena, have three-board fencing with an average of five boards in each that are in need of replacement. This presents a bit of a challenge at this time due to the increased price of boards.

As we need to replace 60 boards at a cost of $14.50 each, we are hoping that our little village of supporters will assist us by sponsoring a board (or partially sponsor a board).

This will help ensure the overall safety and well-being of each and every member of our beloved little herd, for which they, and we, will be forever grateful.

A Wonderful Visit

We had a fun time introducing some of the ladies from the GFWC Williston Woman’s Club to our beloved herd last weekend. Waylon tried to monopolize the time – he just adores attention and JoJo, Jazzy, and CaryLou, thankfully, behaved! Everyone had an absolutely wonderful time!

Beauty’s Haven is currently in the lead in Radiant’s Charity of the Month Contest thanks to the dedication of our amazing village of supporters. Busy Times

We have had yet another very busy week at Beauty’s Haven. I’ve spent a day in court as well as countless hours doing paperwork to ensure that sweet Maggie’s future is the best that it can be – we could most certainly use prayers to make this happen. I have also responded to several calls regarding horses that needed help, but sadly, the outcomes for those horses did not end well. We simply cannot take them all which truly breaks my heart, but with so many special needs horses here at the rescue who require extra care, we are just not in a position to do so.

Today, we have the next round of hooficures commencing, but still have not raised adequate funds to cover the last round of hooficures. Thankfully, a number of donations have been received via our One Dollar Farrier campaign, but there are still a number of horses who do not have sponsorships.

The total cost for the farrier, who trims every four weeks, is approximately $1,000 monthly. While some horses can be trimmed every five weeks, most need to be done more frequently.

Additionally, we have testing for Warrior, Peaches, Bouie, Nickers and Cloud Dancer. These tests are for Cushing’s, Thyroid, Coggins, Chemistry, ACTH, Insulin, CBC, etc. I am once again asking our amazing village of supporters for additional assistance to cover this cost which averages $350 per horse. While these tests are quite costly, please be assured that they are most necessary to ensure the overall health and well-being of our beloved little herd.

Just One Dollar?

JoJo here again! I hope you all had a very happy Easter and Passover! Everyone here at the rescue had a very nice day although some of my friends were a bit sad as only a few of us were able to have ‘Happy Feet’ in time for Easter.

As you know, we had so many needs arise all at once – Mommy Theresa’s birthday fundraiser; little Warrior’s frightening and serious health issue; and Pearle, my little cat sister’s sad and unexpected delivery of premature kittens. We are so very grateful for all the prayers and contributions that came in during that time and truly understand why helping us have ‘Happy Feet,’ was the least important thing on your list. Sadly, though, things like hooficures and hay are a necessary and ongoing need to keep us all healthy and happy.

So, I was thinking if each of our many supporters could send just one dollar, it would add up so very quickly and before you know it, everyone will have ‘Happy Feet!’

Pearle

Introducing our newest rescue. She’s one of the many cats who comes around during the night. These past few days, I’ve been seeing her on the camera during the day rather than going off with the others at sunrise. And her tummy seemed to be getting bigger by the day! We were able to catch three kittens from a litter before her generation, but we weren’t able to catch the mother, so I’m assuming that Momma Cat got pregnant again, and this one, as well as two others, were born only a few months ago.

Since she was caught, this sweet little girl had been hiding in the back of her little hidey-hut, but on Wednesday when I was cleaning her cage, she ventured out of her little ‘house.’ We scheduled an appointment with the vet for Thursday morning and our plan was, if she’s not pregnant, she will get spayed, recover, and then be released. But our plan, however, was simply not meant to be, as on Thursday morning, we discovered that she had six stillborn preemie babies in the wee hours of the morning. Sadly, they weren’t developed enough to have survived. The vet determined that this little one is only about five months old – just a baby herself. She was vetted and spayed and is doing okay and she does seem to be more at peace than I’ve ever before seen her. I’m sure she must have been quite confused about what was going on, but she’ll never have to worry about going through that again. I have named her, ‘Pearle.’

Pearle will remain at Beauty’s Haven to recover and she will be on medication for a week. Last evening, when I sat with her by her cage, she came over to me and let me rub her little head. And she purred! I so wish I wasn’t allergic to cats! Pearle is also very much enjoying the gifts she received from a wonderful supporter – food and feed dishes!

We would appreciate any commitment from others to help with Pearle’s vet bill, which was $265. We also have at least five more kittens/cats to trap and get fixed. I’m especially concerned about a black and white cat, who I believe, may also be pregnant. My Birthday Wish This Year

My Birthday Wish this year is for equine weight scales which are essential in monitoring an animal’s weight during their initial rehabilitation as well as for their ongoing care. The second part of my Birthday Wish is to get caught up with our outstanding veterinary bills (3K). To help make my wish come true, a dear friend and supporter has offered a Match Game whereby, all donations up to $1500, will be matched dollar for dollar.

As I reflect upon Beauty’s Haven, a lovely testimonial written on 5 May 2018, by a treasured member of our BHFER family comes to mind. Her lovely words describe her first visit to the rescue and meeting the horses, words which truly exemplify the ‘Magic’ of Beauty’s Haven, ‘A Place Where Life Begins, Again!’
