Mo Shahtef’s Prize

This is Mo Shahtef’s Prize – Mo for short! Mo is a 20-year-old registered Arabian recovered from an “adoption gone bad.” It was truly a relief when we learned that Mo was okay and where he was located, thanks to social media, prayers, and good-hearted people willing to do the right thing.

Mo was given or sold to someone by the adopter and then went to a number of other homes. Thankfully, he landed with someone who reached out to us when they learned of the situation. This person has a huge heart and has dedicated her life to helping animals and we’re so very grateful that she and her family opened up their home to Mo when he was in need. And, contrary to the assumptions of some, the person was offered the opportunity to adopt Mo but since she has other horses and animals that she has rescued and wishes to continue to help others, Mo’s departure opened up a space for yet another precious animal in need.

When we reached out for help to find Derek and Mo, many of you took precious time to share our posts, make calls, etc. Your support was a reminder to us that we weren’t alone and that there are still good people in this world. You all set an example for what can happen when people work together to do the right thing. The light from our village of supporters shines brightly and I’m so very proud of each and every one of you! As our village grows, so does the light and as long as we stay in the light, we’ll never be alone. And all of the time we were searching for the boys, Betsy Rose was always in my head and heart reminding me to never give up and to believe.

He’s Been Located – It’s Truly a Miracle!

Mo Before Adoption

We are thrilled to announce that through the power of social networking, our beloved Mo has been found and will be returning to Beauty’s Haven!  Our quest to find Mo has been quite daunting to say the least.  As you may know, we have been searching for Mo for many weeks.  Mo is an Arabian gelding who had been adopted out a few years ago along with another one of our Arabian geldings, Derek.  We were blessed to have tracked Derek down to a boarding barn in New Jersey and we arranged to have him returned to us.

We spent countless hours trying to find Mo and that he had been sold by his original adopter to someone in Malabar, FL which was a breach of contract.  At some point in time, Brevard County Animal Control became involved due to him being in very poor condition.  The person to whom the original adopter sold/gave Mo, subsequently, sold/gave him to another person who, in turn, gave Mo to yet someone else in another county!  It was believed that Mo was living on large acreage with other horses in a county north of us and that his caregivers had trouble keeping weight on him – it was thought he has ulcers.  And, based on his teeth, it was thought that he was older than 19 years old.  This age is confirmed on his Arabian Horse Registry papers (born in 2000) which have been in our possession.  Upon learning this, we were concerned that Mo may have special needs similar to those of Little E, a senior Arabian gelding, who will spend the remainder of his days here at the rescue.  Little E must be fed a special diet five times a day while being separated from other horses, in order to maintain his weight.  If Mo had special issues, or suspected health issues that needed attention, we thought it may be in his best interest to return to Beauty’s Haven.  We continued in our search to learn of his specific location.

Thanks to social media the person that Mo had been given to contacted us!  After some discussion, we made arrangements to have Mo returned to us.  The person that was caring for him has a huge heart for helping animals and we’re very grateful to them for opening their home up to Mo when he needed it.  They were offered the opportunity to adopt Mo but they have other horses and animals that they have taken in and want to continue to help others – Mo’s departure opened a space for yet another that may need their help.

There are many victims in this case to include those who unknowingly purchased or took in Mo, not realizing that he belongs to Beauty’s Haven.  Because of the selfish and immoral actions of someone to whom we had entrusted the care of two Arabian geldings (Derek and Mo) through the process of adoption, our time, funds, and donations have been impacted considerably.  The time and energy spent looking for both Derek and Mo should have been dedicated to applying for grants, trying to adopt out horses, helping others in need and raising the necessary funds to care for our beloved little herd.  A substantial amount of money ($1400+) to transport Derek back to the rescue from New Jersey, the fee for his care at the boarding stable, expenses of vetting, including blood work and Coggins, dental and farrier work, and the ongoing cost of his nutritional needs has been truly expensive.  Mo’s expenses will be significant as well.  In addition to the cost of transport, Mo will be vetted upon his return and he will be scheduled for both dental and farrier care as well.

Derek and Mo desperately need monthly sponsors to assist with their intake and ongoing care.  We never like to ask for donations but we must – it’s what a non-profit charity organization has to do in order to survive.  Tax deductible donations make it possible for us maintain care of the horses here and to help others.  Please consider making a one time, or recurring, donation of any amount and know that it will make an incredible difference in the life of each and every member of our remarkable little herd.  If you are not in a position to donate, you can still help by sharing our information with others – perhaps you have friends, family, and/or co-workers who would love to help.

Beauty of the Heart

Beauty’s Haven Farm and Equine Rescue, Inc., a 501(c)(3) grassroots Non-Profit Organization is currently experiencing a ‘rough patch’ due to unforeseen circumstances. Theresa’s husband, Bob, the co-founder of Beauty’s Haven, is scheduled to undergo aortic aneurysm repair surgery on Friday, July 20th. Although this procedure could have been performed at a later date, both Theresa and Bob believe that it is in their best interest to have the surgery as soon as possible in order to alleviate additional stress. On a positive note, the doctor expects Bob to make a full recovery and after six to eight weeks of recuperation, he will, once again, be able to perform his daily tasks. As most supporters are aware, Theresa simply does not like to ask for assistance, so on her behalf, I am seeking your support during this most challenging time.

 

Returned Horses and Forever Homes

Beauty’s Haven recently rescued Rosie, a mini who may be in foal, and Joie, a mini filly. Both came from a feral herd. About a month ago, we also rescued a pair of hours old, orphaned baby goats, Ginger and Snap. Bottle babies require around the clock care but it has been worth every second as both are now flourishing and were just yesterday, delivered to their adoptive home where they will be forever treasured. Theresa will truly miss these precious babies for they were such a joy to behold and their antics always made her smile.

Sadly, however, three horses recently returned from their adopters, which put a strain on already strained resources – financially, physically, and mentally. ‘Rescue’ means much more than helping a horse in dire need by bringing them to safety. Rescue is a commitment to each horse for the rest of his or her life; a commitment that they will receive routine care which is quite costly. Routine care includes vetting, de-wormers, dental and farrier care, vaccines, hay and grain, special diets and supplements. And there are also unexpected emergencies. Sponsoring a horse to assist with his or her daily care is a most helpful way in which to make a difference in the life of a precious equine. There is no set dollar amount required to help sponsor a horse – any amount helps.

A number of beautiful horses are currently available for adoption and are patiently awaiting their loving forever homes. Many equines with special needs comprise the Beauty’s Haven Sanctuary Program where they will forever remain safe.

 

Training

Horses are much more attractive to potential adopters once they have been trained and we are truly grateful to Dan who has done a fantastic job working with Kiana. Kiana now accepts being ridden and will one day, be a wonderful trail horse for a potential adopter. Kiana’s training has been made possible by Lynda and her family’s most generous sponsorship.

Zahara, the rescue’s very own, ‘Black Beauty,’ is a stunning, healthy Thoroughbred mare. She is presently eligible to receive much needed training at an off-site facility, but she needs sponsors in order for this to occur. The cost of this training is $700/month for a minimum of two months which includes training and full care. The training spot is open as of August 1st and we don’t want Zahara to miss this amazing opportunity. If anyone would like to assist with the cost of Zahara’s training, we would be forever grateful.

 

Manpower

Beauty’s Haven has a wonderful, albeit small, group of hands-on volunteers who come on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 9 am until approximately, 3 pm, as well as a volunteer who works with a special needs volunteer on Friday mornings. Another volunteer works for three hours on Friday mornings cleaning paddocks, and on occasion, other individuals stop by to assist. Beauty’s Haven’s volunteers are absolutely priceless and each and every moment that they spend at the rescue is so greatly appreciated.

Most unfortunately, since the rescue is experiencing a major shortage of volunteers, Theresa and Bob have been tirelessly working, on average, sixteen plus hours per day caring for their beloved herd and attending to the routine tasks of maintaining the farm. Theresa will do her best during this most challenging time but she simply will be unable to perform her duties while taking on Bob’s tasks as well. We therefore, need to hire someone temporarily who will assist Theresa and perform many of Bob’s daily chores, starting immediately.

The major impetus in procuring an adequate number of individuals to assist with the thirty plus horses that comprise the Beauty’s Haven herd, is the distance one must travel as the rescue is located in a rural area, approximately thirty-five miles from Ocala and Gainesville. This is the primary reason why Beauty’s Haven needs to relocate closer to Gainesville, once the perfect property is found that would best serve the needs of the rescue. The rescue also has other needs which need to be addressed – repairs to fencing and manure spreaders, replacement of tires on the rescue’s vehicle, repairs to the flatbed trailer that is used to transport hay in addition to many other farm related needs.

TINSEL’S LONG AND WINDING ROAD TO RECOVERY

Dr. Ted did x-rays on Tinsel’s hock again yesterday. She continues to fight a joint infection but her recent SAA numbers have been much lower than they were initially, albeit they’re still elevated. She will, therefore, remain on IV antibiotics.

Tinsel appears to be a content horse. Her temperature is normal and she has a great appetite. Her eyes are bright and she’s interested in everything that goes on around her. She walks on her toe much of the time, but when she does put weight on that foot, she walks quite well.  She walked really well the day after she received an acupuncture treatment by Dr. Julia last week.

All of this sounds positive, but Tinsel’s prognosis remains guarded. She is not out of the woods by far, and we don’t know how this will resolve. She came to us in very poor condition – underweight and with a horrible eye infection. But she beat the odds – we were able to save her eye and she blossomed into a beautiful mare.

Dr. Ted, Dr. Julia, and the rest of our care team are not giving up on Tinsel. And very importantly, Tinsel isn’t ready to give up either. She’s come so far and we are praying for a miracle. Tinsel needs good thoughts and prayers. A day at a time.

Dr. Ted gave the ok for Tinsel to hand graze for which she is really appreciative. One of the complications that can arise when a horse puts all their weight on the right or left foot versus distributing it evenly on both feet, is laminitis.

Yesterday was LouAnne’s last day for awhile. We’re going to miss her and Lance but they will be back at the end of summer. We truly appreciate all of their help and wish them safe travels.

THERESA’S FRACTURE & TINSEL’S RECOVERY

On Monday, Theresa was accidentally kicked by one of the horses and she was knocked to the ground. She was immediately taken to the ER where x-rays of her right leg, hip, and hand were performed. Thankfully, no fracture occurred in either her hip or leg.  A CT scan, unfortunately, revealed a fracture of the third metacarpal bone on her right hand.

On Tuesday, Theresa went to the Orthopedic Institute for further evaluation. She will be in a cast for six to eight weeks and thankfully, will not require surgery. Her leg has a sizable bruise as well as quite a bit of swelling and is truly painful to say the least.

While waiting at The Orthopedic Institute, Theresa picked up a magazine and what did she see……Beauty‘s Haven, featured in an article about Mocha and Daisy with their adoptive mom – Emily Pridgen!  Needless to say, even though she was in extreme pain, this truly made Theresa’s day!

Theresa, despite her own injuries, is extremely worried about sweet Tinsel. While some hock swelling has gone down, Tinsel is once again, reluctant to put weight on that leg. She was doing much better until Sunday, and then for some unknown reason, she has taken a step backward in her recovery process.

Our Match Game for Tinsel is still in progress with $373 remaining in available funds so if anyone would like to assist with her medication/veterinary needs, it would be so greatly appreciated. TINSEL UPDATE AND A NEW MATCH GAME!

We would like to share some good news about Tinsel! The swelling in her leg appears to have decreased ever so slightly. But that’s a start! She is putting weight on her leg occasionally, so that is a definite sign of improvement! Dr. Ted even allowed her to be hand walked for a short distance yesterday and she did better than expected!  Just click here and your heart will truly sing!

Blood tests from earlier this week indicate there is still infection and Tinsel must remain on the course of antibiotics that has been prescribed for her. One of the medications is Penicillin-G which is $48 per bottle. She requires 5 bottles a day. Another blood test will be done tomorrow.

We have yet another most generous Match Game offer from three very dear friends and each donation toward a bottle of medication, will be matched dollar for dollar, until we reach a total of $850.

We truly appreciate the donations that have come in to help Tinsel. I really don’t like having to continuously reach out for help – I know everyone assists whenever they can. Perhaps, if you support Tinsel by just sharing this out, someone else may be able to help as well.

SOMEBODY’S KNOCKING AND BABY RAY IS BACK!

Baby Ray is back from his foster home as Athena, his pasture mate, has been adopted! Baby Ray is now all grown up!  He came to us as a few months old orphan, skin on bones, after having been listed as “Free on Craigslist.” He was born blind due to congenital cataracts. The cataracts were removed at UF and he can now see, albeit he has no lenses and is unable to focus normally.

Little Grace just loves her new home! And her foster family has fallen in love with her – so much so that they are adopting her! Grace has been blessed with her own human family! And we were blessed to be able to help her when she needed us, thanks to the wonderful assistance and support from our village!

Magic is still stunning! Notice the two birds? They are never very far from him. Magic was a bit under the weather for a few days, but thankfully, he is now feeling better.

There must me something magical about the stairs to the office – I never know who I’m going to find there!

These little ones are doing so well. They’re steadily gaining weight and are very happy! Cricket never fails to greet you with a whinny!

We are very thankful to everyone who helped with their needs. They love attention and would make a wonderful addition to a family looking for little ones to love on. Good morning everyone! Daisy’s full of smiles today! It’s going to be another very busy and hot day here. Before it got too busy we wanted to wish everyone a great day!

My escorts this morning. Duke beside me in the golf cart seat, Jazzy leads, JoJo stays right beside me. LOL Have a great day everyone!

Remember Silver Belle? She was also raised by Momma Sue, Aaleyah Belles mom. She’s loved. This is what helps to motivate us to keep going – happy horses, happy humans!

May 17th

I wish I could end the day with some good news but I can’t. In fact, I’d like to ask for prayers for one of our horses and his adoptive parents. Some of you may remember Cisco – an older Haflinger pony cross that came to us in 2012 from a home where the owner was a meth user. I got a call from his adoptive humans this evening – he was colicing – thought to be a twist. I haven’t heard back from anyone yet but I hope and pray he’s working through it. He’d been given fluids, etc. Cisco is a lovely soul – he keeps watch over Tia and Tess – two donkeys that were also adopted from us.

Update – we lost Cisco to colic which is a dreadful thing. Thank you Tony and Michelle for giving him a wonderful home and the love and care he deserved. Rest in peace Cisco – we love you, always.

Well, our snowbirds are gone until the fall. We’re going to miss you Suzanne, LouAnn, and Ginny!

Solace had a so-so day today.  The weather was a little cool, but nice.

Although he is in better spirits, please keep the new gelding, Romeo, in your prayers – his blood work results came back.  His liver and kidneys are struggling.

Oscar can get his front end up on his own now.  We still have to help him get his back end up.

Oscar, Cookie, and Others and Adoption Follow Ups

February 10th – 12th 

Monday, February 10th
We are so proud of our horses!  This mare has come so far in the care of her adoptive family – she recently won an event at the local speed show and it was the first time she had even been ridden outside of her paddock!  When she was adopted, she didn’t even want to be touched.  Congratulations Raven (Mia) and Brigitte!  Brigitte you and your family have worked wonders with her – thank you!

Cookie needs help! I call her my little “cow” in a loving way – the markings on her face are just unique. But she has been battling cancer for months now.  We are trying to save her eye.  Dr. Porter will be here on Thursday but we need to raise funds for her treatment.

Solace today. He was feeling ok. Thankfully.

Starlight – another of our rescued horses! Starlight and Jordan take great care of each other at Sprouses Corner Ranch! We are so proud of them and their accomplishments!

Oscar actually got up ON HIS OWN ACCORD this morning!  I knew last night when we went to roll him over, that it would be soon – he started kicking out with his back legs!  He’s only did it one time, but we’re hopeful he’ll continue to improve.  We do have a little setback as he may have some sort of infection going on.  Dr. Julia examined him this evening and we’re waiting for blood work to come back.

You can see Oscar didn’t feel well yesterday.  He hasn’t yet laid down again.  But hopefully, he’ll be able to continue to get up on his own.  He visited with Bill and Blodwyn today.

Wednesday, February 11th
Mahogany and Eliza are feeling a little better each day.  They will be getting hooficures tomorrow.

Wednesday, February 12th Oscar is all tucked in for the night. He hasn’t been able to get up on his own again. His blood work results from yesterday’s test came back and he has been started on antibiotics. He does have a good appetite and is drinking. But he has a long way to go. Please keep him in your prayers.  This is Bonnie giving some meds tonight before we got him back up.
