I apologize it’s been a few days since I’ve updated. It’s been crazy busy here. But here are some pictures from the last few days..
Harvey got some stitches out today. More will come out on Wednesday – hopefully all of them! He’s passing soft poop and he’s nursing just fine. He will still be on stall rest for a few weeks. Prayers do work – I believe…
I wish I had good news on Gracie. Based on x-rays taken today, the infection in Celesta’s bone (elbow) doesn’t appear better. She doesn’t have a temperature and her appetite is fine. She got another antibiotic injection in the bone today. The vet will see her again on Wednesday for another x-ray, blood work, and possibly a change in medications. I body clipped her as best as I could while she was waking up. It’s extremely hot and I’m hoping it would bring her some relief. Celesta is a good girl that could use prayers and some angels to help with her vetting. I’m trying to get Celesta on Dr. Julia’s schedule (holistic vet).
CaryLou and Wally love to play. CaryLou and his mom, Twinkle, handled being separated just fine. Both boys will be gelded soon – before the temps get any worse. Lucy is doing really well. The higher temps do make her breathing more labored. She stays in front of the fan much of the time.
Harvey managed to get his IV catheter out over the weekend. I don’t like giving shots to babies! If all goes well, Wednesday will be his last day on them.
Baby Girl – it won’t be the same here without her. But we’ll share updates on how she is doing.
She will always have scars – they are a testament to her will to live and love for life. She’s beautiful!
LadyBug is staying at the rescue for a few weeks while her foster mom is recovering from a knee replacement.
I saw the whole thing – guess who was trying to dig their way to China? It wasn’t Penelope.
Gracie gets hand walked throughout the day. CaryLou tries hard to get Gracie’s attention but she is too interested in the grass. LOL
Harvey got a new toy on Saturday – the empty 2 liter bottle hanging in the corner. It helps to keep him entertained.

Pony Mare in Dire Need
June 14th, 2013
I got a call from someone about their pony mare that is down and can’t get up – they don’t know what to do and they can’t afford to have a vet out. When I started asking questions, I didn’t like the answers. When I asked how old the mare is the owner said they didn’t know but they’ve had her a long time and a little girl has been riding the pony, but without a saddle. I asked for a photo and was appalled. This mare has been laying there on the ground, like trash, for days. It’s June in Florida and it doesn’t even appear that anyone has even taken the time, or cared enough, to brush out her winter coat. Even with the coat, you can clearly see she’s skin on bones. There is no excuse to allow an animal to suffer – and this mare has obviously been suffering for awhile.
We have a vet on the way to her but we need help. I am asking for pledges at this point – I don’t know if this girl can be saved or not but a vet will be there soon to assess and advise. If the mare is too far gone she will be humanely euthanized – she won’t be left to linger and die and she will not die alone. If she can has a chance, we have a transporter on standby with MMC Eventing, and we will give her our all. One way or another, this pony will know that she matters.
The vet arrived and the pony is being run fluids now. Her HR is very high – please pray that it comes down and that the fluids will help and that she will be able to get up. We have someone enroute to transport her to us if she can make it. She doesn’t deserve to die like this. The vet recommends the pony be helped to Rainbow Bridge but I feel a very strong need to give the mare a chance.
After receiving fluids, and with assistance, she was able to get up! She’ll be loaded and brought to the rescue where we will do everything possible to help her to recover. Please keep the good thoughts and prayers coming! This one is tugging hard at my heartstrings – there’s just something about her….
To everyone that offered a pledge to help her – thank you! Please send when you can. I’ll update once she’s here and settled in. We’ll be awaiting blood work results too. Let’s pray it isn’t too late.
The pony has arrived and it doesn’t look good for her. She’s too weak to stand or to even hold her head up. I’m amazed that she is alive. But this says something about her will – we’re going to give her all of the help we can until she tells us she’s had enough. She has a determined look in her eyes that says she’s not ready to give up. We will see what the blood work results are to see how badly her organs have been effected and then regroup.
We got her up and into the sling which will be a key tool to her recovery. It’s going to be a long ride but we’re in it for as long as she is willing and wanting to heal. She doesn’t seem like a mare that is going to give up easily. There’s still light in her eyes.
We can’t leave her in the sling – the amount of time that the pressure the sling puts on her body has to be limited since she can’t even stand. We will take her out periodically in order for her to lay flat to get good rest which her body needs.
We will turn her every couple of hours to help prevent damage to her organs. She drinks and munches on her mash and when she is awake she is alert. But she tires easily – she is in very bad shape. We really do need a miracle. I’m going to call her Betsy Rose.

Babies and Story
Celesta is about the same – no more temperature so that is a very good thing. Harvey, well, he’s doing fine and wants to get out of his stall! The heat is taking a toll on everyone – including little CaryLou! Everyone is moving a bit slower. LOL! Celesta is not liking getting poked with a needle 3 times a day and I don’t like poking her! Hopefully, Harvey’s remaining stitches will come out tomorrow and Celesta’s blood work will show improvement.

Story
Jenny gave Story lemonade and I gave him a banana (he loves them!). He got lots of hugs and kisses from both of us. Story knows he was loved.
There will be a new bright and shining star in the sky tonight. Story is running pain free on the other side of the Bridge.

Story and Rainbow Bridge
I would like to ask everyone to take a few seconds to think of Story tomorrow at 3 pm as he crosses Rainbow Bridge. Story is a pony that was found wandering the streets in a rural community a couple of years ago. He has severe arthritis in both front knees. We have been able to keep him comfortable (until recently) and he has been a happy pony. He managed to get around and to quickly move out of the way of other horses, if necessary. But we felt it would be best for him to live where he didn’t have to worry about being chased by other horses and potentially being hurt. He went to live at a foster home not far from the rescue.
His foster family loves him dearly and this isn’t easy for them – it isn’t easy for any of us. I try to picture Story running pain free with a new, restored healthy body, on the other side of the Bridge. We were blessed to be able to give Story a couple of years of being loved, and well cared for, and he truly appreciates everything that has been done for him. We have also been blessed with a foster mom and dad that adore him, volunteers that have helped care for him, and donors to help with his care cost. He’s loved by many. But it’s time to let him go.

Celesta had a fever of 105+ this morning. We gave her alcohol baths and she got Banamine after I spoke with Dr. Lugo. Then she stood in front of the Port-A-Cool. Her temperature went down but I noticed when I tried to give her meds via IV catheter that something appeared to be wrong with the catheter so I contacted Dr. Lugo again and asked that someone come out. Dr. Martinez came out and found the catheter had been compromised – some of the meds could have been leaking when I’d give them to her through a tiny hole at the skin level which was covered with tape. The catheter was removed and a new one was inserted another on the other side of Celesta’s neck. Blood tests were done. Tomorrow Dr. Martinez will be back to x-ray and inject antibiotics into the infected area. Depending on what is learned tomorrow her medications may be changed.
Dr. Julia Simonson (holistic vet) was also here and discussed Celesta’s case with Dr. Martinez. A couple of things have been added to what Celesta is being given and we will all regroup tomorrow after the x-rays. I’m wondering about hyperbaric therapy which I’ll discuss with the Dr. tomorrow. I hope all of this makes sense – I’m tired. It’s been a long day. I’m really looking forward to going to bed tonight. I’m happy to report that Harvey is doing well. CaryLou and Wally, well, when I came up for this update they were running around playing.

Baby Girl is Going Home
Good morning! We have a VERY big day today. Bittersweet. It’s going to be a tough day. Our Baby Girl, the precious filly that suffered severe head trauma and had little to no odds or survival when she came to us, is going home. Yes, she has been adopted to a family that is part of our BHFER family. I love Baby Girl so much – it will never be the same here without her. But she deserves her own human. I’ll post later. I just hope I don’t totally completely fall apart when it comes time to load.
