This little guy has a chance to live a good life – please help us give it to him!
I decided to go to the hospital – Ocala Equine Hospital. There is a vet here that has performed the surgery Harvey needs. There is no way I can keep this little tyke from hurting himself and I need to better understand what the options are. Harvey is all over the place on three legs. 
Getting x-rays – everyone loved him and he was such a good boy! Harvey’s issue is congenital – the kneecap didn’t land where it was supposed to in utero. Issues like this are not uncommon in miniatures horses. CaryLou’s issue is another good example.
Back at the rescue. Surgery is needed as soon as possible – it’s scheduled for Tuesday. We need to raise about $2300. 
I feel much better understanding the problem – seeing the x-rays really helped. And we know our options – surgery or euthanasia. Well, we really don’t have an option, IMO. This little guy was born, couldn’t get up to nurse, and was found by his owner (not sure how long he’d been born before being found – the owner had been out of town) still on the ground. He was taken to a hospital with his mom where they ran tests on him and he had to have plasma. He was put on antibiotics. It’s a miracle he survived and thrived to be the healthy little tyke he is – except for the kneecap issue.
Here is a little more about how he came to us. On Monday the owner knew she either had to have Harvey put down or seek help – she did a search on the Internet for miniature horse rescue and came across Warrior’s story (a mini we lost last year due to severe neglect). His story led her to our website and she called me. She’d already named the baby Harvey. She told me Harvey means Warrior and she felt she was led to us for a reason. When I learned they were located in South Carolina my heart sank. BUT – then I remembered! Pam (our transporter) was coming down the East Coast the next day! Was there a higher power involved in this? Yes, I do believe so! Could Pam make a 4 mile detour off the Interstate do get Harvey and his mom? She didn’t hesitate to say yes. I spoke to the vet in SC and she assured me, strongly, that the baby was healthy and strong enough to withstand the trip. And so they arrived here – both happy and healthy (except for his knee cap). He’s come a long way and he deserves a chance.
This guy has a good chance of living a comfortable life – he would be able to run and play like a little boy should (see CaryLou’s video! LOL!).
The vet, Dr. Lugo, was scheduled to go out of town today for the weekend. By scheduling the surgery for Tuesday (Monday is a holiday) it gives us time to raise needed funds and ensures Dr. Lugo will be the surgeon – he has performed this surgery on equine and cows. He could have done it this am but he preferred to wait until Tuesday so he would be in the area should Harvey need him after the surgery.
“Yo Harvey! It’s me – CaryLou! The hospital isn’t a fun place to be but no worries! Just wait until you can run and play with me – we’re going to have a blast! I’m going to ask people to help you! Have faith little guy – CaryLou to the rescue!”
And I do believe if CaryLou could do it on his own, he would be here typing this instead of me, asking for help for his friend. He’s another “I can do it!” baby (will be 2 months tomorrow). Actually, he’s more of a “I AM DOING IT!” boy! LOL
Harvey’s odds are 50/50 but I think that is great! Solace’s odds were like less than 10% but look at him now! Attitude has a lot to do with it IMO. And like Solace, Harvey is a “can do” little horse. He’s only about 23 lbs. He’s all over the place – he loves life and he deserves a chance. God led him to us for a reason. Please help us to help Harvey – we need to raise about $2300 to have surgery done on Tuesday. This baby deserves to live! I can just picture Harvey and CaryLou playing in the future – what a sight that will be!

Harvey to the hospital… 06/06/13 Thursday
I have been having trouble with my email and am late getting this out – this is Thursday’s update.
Harvey seemed a little irritated last night and wasn’t as active yesterday. He got an enema – he hadn’t passed any poop. His temperature was normal. His back leg that was operated on is doing well.
He did sleep like a baby – he’s precious.
This is what we found this morning – he greeted us with his beautiful baby face and his blankie.
However, I need to ask for more prayers. Harvey still hasn’t gone poop and I’m supposed to give him another enema. Part of the problem is he isn’t nursing enough. I have to be at the milk bar and point things in the right direction much of the time. He just doesn’t latch on easy. It may be because his leg is bothering him. He won’t drink from a tub or a bottle – I’ve been giving him momma’s milk from a syringe in addition to what he does get when he nurses. Gracie gets full and grumpy so I milk her to give her relief. We don’t want him dehydrated.
I called Dr. Lugo and Dr. Martinez came to the farm and examined Harvey. He got mineral oil and was tubed. We opted to take Harvey to the hospital to be started on fluids and so x-rays/ultrasound could be done.
Gracie loaded right up. Harvey and I rode in the backseat of the truck while Jenny drove – Harvey looked like a Sunday passenger on a pleasure ride. He’s a doll. They settled right into a stall at the hospital.

X-rays/ultrasound were done and Harvey was started on fluids. Dr. Lugo and Dr. Martinez advised Harvey did, in fact, have an impaction. This was not good news.
While at the hospital – giving Harvey some time for the oil and fluids to start working, Bob called me to advise that Celesta was lame and uncomfortable. Dr. Lugo and Dr. Martinez went to the farm to examine Celesta. They did x-rays and blood work was done. Dr. Lugo returned to the hospital and advised there appeared to be an issue in Celesta’s bone in her front leg. She has been started on antibiotics. While we were still at the hospital with Harvey, Celesta’s blood work results came back which confirmed an infection. Dr. Lugo advised that he and Dr. Martinez will be at the farm in the am to x-ray the bone and inject antibiotics into the area. She will also get an IV catheter since she will be on medication for several days.
We discussed our options with Dr. Lugo and Dr. Martinez about Harvey and then headed back to the farm. Another major surgery on Harvey would be very, very hard on him. We will be running him fluids and giving him overnight to pass poop/oil. He slept most of the way back to the rescue – it was only 15 minutes away. We will regroup in the morning and pray for poop overnight.
And then, a few hours later, Harvey passed what was hopefully the impaction – we had poop!
We will continue to closely monitor Harvey and he will get fluids every 3 hours. Jenny is here and is taking the first shift until 3 am. Prayers were answered – thank you all! Let’s now pray he continues to poop. And pray that Celesta’s infection resolves quickly. And I have to say that Dr. Lugo, Dr. Martinez, and the staff at Ocala Equine Hospital have been wonderful. Everyone there just loves Harvey!

An update covering the last several days –
Little Penny isn’t so little anymore…
Harvey making a new friend this morning. He tried to talk Lynn in to taking him outside for a bit but it didn’t work.

I actually took some time for me yesterday – a short ride on Peaches.
Katie checking in on Harvey. He is like a live wire – he is all over the place in his stall! There is no keeping him “quiet”!
Paula and her daughter, Melissa, helped out yesterday which enabled Lucy and Gentleman to get much needed baths. This is Paul and his daughter, Roxie, with Melissa giving Lucy a bath.
I just love to watch the babies run and play – Celesta is beautiful no matter what she is doing!
Melissa wondered if Celesta would let her near her. Before we knew it they were sharing secrets!

I’ll try to update more tomorrow – Dr. Lugo is coming to look at Harvey’s leg and change the bandage. Harvey is still like a live wire – even kicking at his momma! I’m afraid to put a ball or something in his stall – he’s just so active. I’ll ask Dr. Lugo what he thinks of him having a toy tomorrow. Maybe an empty milk jug hung from the ceiling or something. I don’t like him being so bored but I don’t want to take any chances of him injuring that leg. He bears more weight on it each day.

Harvey’s Surgery
A summary of today – it’s been a long one…
Getting ready to go to the hospital this am.
We were a little late leaving – Penny and Penelope wanted help us load. LOL! Once there, Gracie went right to work on munching on her hay. “Don’t worry mommy Theresa, I’m a brave boy and everything will be ok.”
Watching was not easy. Dr. Lugo and the staff took very good care of Harvey.
Harvey’s little knee was misplaced (congenital defects are not uncommon in miniature horses) so Dr. Lugo had to move it, along with attached ligaments, etc. This was a pretty intense surgery. Good news was that the groove was present – now we pray that everything stays in place. He got quite a few internal and external stitches. Surgery took 1.5+ hours but Harvey woke up ok and wanted to nurse. And he did put weight on his back leg for the first time!
Gracie missed Harvey and whinnied for him during surgery. She is a good momma.
And then he rested, which is good.
He needs to rest and heal. And he needs continued prayers.
Harvey was a bit uncomfortable when I had to leave the hospital late this evening but he’s getting pain and other medications. He will need to stay at the hospital for a few days where they will be monitoring and treating pain, monitoring for infection, bandaging, etc. The next couple of days are critical. He’s far from being out of the woods. He’s on an IV and is getting medications for his tummy too. Please continue to keep Harvey in your prayers. He’s a fighter but still, he’s just a baby. I hope he knows we are trying to help. Thank you all for caring about this little angel and his mom. I’ll update in the morning after I get to the hospital.

BH Update from the weekend…
Here are a few pictures from the weekend. It’s been busy, to say the least.
Ariel still has a tummy she must be so much more comfortable now.
CaryLou is still upset with me for putting a pink flymask on him. And he’s mad at Bob for taking a picture! I didn’t make him wear it – I was just introducing it to him.

Harvey, CaryLou, Ariel – baby tonight?
Dr. Blair looked at Harvey this evening – the swelling in the leg has gone down. Harvey was running all over the place again – he’s a live wire. Just imagine him and CaryLou together! That won’t happen for quite awhile – Harvey will need some time to heal and grow stronger after his surgery.

I looked out Ariel’s stall window a bit ago and I found a full moon and the contrail from the Delta 4 rocket that was launched from the Cape!
My computer is causing me grief and apparently I’m not getting all of my emails. I’m behind on emails as well – if you’ve emailed me and I have not responded I apologize.
Ariel is going to foal tonight – I just know it. Please pray for an easy delivery and a healthy baby!
