Solace has an infection that is believed to originate from a cracked tooth all the way in the back of his mouth. The infection may have made its way to his sinus’. He will be going to the hospital today – we’ll see what more x-rays show and go from there.
This is Solace the day he arrived back in December 2012. Imagine how thin he was without the unhealthy winter coat.
It seemed to take forever with Solace at the hospital today. They did a dental exam, blood work, x-rays, and scoped him. What they found is an almost perfect 3/8″ hole in the top of his mouth that goes into his sinus cavity. We need to continue to monitor him as we have been and treating his symptoms. He’s a good boy. At least he didn’t have to have any teeth pulled. Solace getting x-rays.
Solace being scoped.
This is Betsy Rose introducing Freckles to Dr. Bess. She’s very proud of her little friend! Dr. Bess wants to give Betsy a couple more weeks before sedating her to get to her horrible back teeth. Betsy Rose is gaining weight nicely. She’s a captivating little mare that makes us all smile. “Hi Dr. Bess! Freckles here – up here!!! I hang out with Betsy Rose all of the time – were BFF! She’s doing really good and everyone is so good to her – she’s loved! She appreciates everyone and everything done for her. She’s told me more than once that she’s more than thankful that she was given another chance – she loves life!”
Dr. Bess was totally in awe of the gifts that Betsy Rose has received! And she thinks Freckles is great!
Betsy Rose was a bit more lively today than she was the first time Dr. Bess met her.
Betsy Rose enjoyed her walk yesterday. After grazing a bit, she wanted to nap. So we let her. She pretty much gets what she wants. LOL She is a tiny little girl that has a huge heart – she makes us all smile. Betsy Rose is simply amazing and adorable! She needs to build muscle and she is – it’s hard to tell looking at the pictures – but she is. Slow and steady… Yes, Betsy Rose is still thin but she’s put on a good amount of weight. She is more steady on her feet each day. She’s a fighter that believes she can – and she will!
Beautiful even when taking a rest.
I will be so happy for Betsy Rose when she is able to stay out of the sling. It’s going to take a bit more time but I’ll know when the time is right. She’s come a long way.
Betsy Rose. I think her name is just perfect. When I met her the name “Betsy” came to mind. I rubbed her forehead and saw the “design” on it and thought about rose bushes that my mom used to grow. Silly, I guess. But I like it and I think she does too!
Betsy Rose – what more can I say? She’s simply adorable!
The new flymasks are here! Look at these boys – they are styling!

Harvey and Gracie. Harvey is growing like a weed! Dr. Lugo really did a great job putting Harvey’s little kneecap back where it should have been.
This is Mo. He’s a 13 yr old Arabian gelding that is looking for a forever home. He’s got a really great personality and a bit of brio – if only I were younger. I just adore Arabians! Mo is smart and he loves to please. Dr. Bess did his teeth yesterday.
Have a great night, everyone.

Betsy Rose and the Boys
July 27th – 28th, 2013
We took Betsy Rose out for a walk on Saturday morning. Things were a bit busy because the fly mister system is being installed. She was startled by something and jumped away too fast and fell down. We took advantage of the situation and let her take a good nap. When she woke up, we had someone on all sides of her and with little help, she hopped up! Out of the bad of going down, came the good of a great nap and the encouragement of getting up! Her journey to recovery brings back good memories of watching our kids learn to walk and even when they learned to ride a bike. There where bumps along the way, but that’s what it took for them to learn to thrive on their own. We are very proud of our kids and their accomplishments and we are proud of Betsy Rose, too!
“Mommy Theresa can you make the others be quiet for a bit? Betsy Rose is FINALLY taking a nap and I don’t want her to be disturbed.” Freckles is such a considerate friend!
Betsy Rose had a great Sunday – she is slowly gaining strength. Freckles is always close by cheering her on. She is still adorable.
Betsy Rose did take a couple of good naps today. I’m looking forward to the day when she can stay out of the sling. I think she’s going to be a little mare that can be quite opinionated!
Garan came to the rescue today. He had been staying at a foster home but not putting on weight like we think he should. He’ll be going on the same feed schedule as Gentleman, Little E, and Solace. He’s a magnificent registered Arabian gelding that is looking for a forever home. It took a couple of hours, but the boys finally settled down and now Garan is grazing next to the rest of them.
Harvey got to play with the boys! CaryLou looks funny – he was playing under the sprinkler. Humans coming to Beauty’s Haven beware – the boys are all together! Enter their paddock at your own risk! LOL!
CaryLou and Harvey play games. Wally tries to ignore Harvey. I have to wonder what Gracie thinks about all of this. She’s got the patience of a Saint! However, she has double barreled Harvey a few times this past week – he’s getting a bit too frisky and I’m concerned about her getting his kneecap. Letting him out with the boys likely brings her some relief.
Solace watching Harvey while waiting for dinner.
Horses at the end of a rainbow – proof that they really are a treasure!
Have a great week!
Sincerely,
Theresa

Getting ready to take Cookie to the hospital. She will be fine – they will get all the SCC and she will live a long, healthy and happy life!
Cookie settled in at the hospital. She’s not liking it there, but hopefully, she will be coming home tomorrow evening. If not, then Wednesday morning. Please pray that all goes well tomorrow with her surgery and that all of the cancer is removed and this will be the last of it.

Saturday 07/20/13 – Betsy Rose’s Saturday Update
"Freckles here! Betsy Rose is feeling better today! I was a little worried about her yesterday afternoon but she just needed some good rest. Today it wasn’t as hot and we got to go for a walk right after breakfast!"
Betsy Rose did well walking down the little hill in front of the barn.
Once we got to the shade of the tree she grazed and got a sponge bath.
She did well walking back to the barn. Today was the longest she’s stayed out of the sling! Each day she is a little stronger.
She’s so good about the sling – as soon as she got into position she just walked right under it and we hooked her back up. The sling is always there but she stands the majority of the time. Her legs are getting stronger. But she sleeps in the sling too and she does get needed REM sleep. She just isn’t strong enough yet to get up on her own should she go down. Today she only tripped up once but recovered nicely. She is getting some muscle on her. Yesterday when Dr. Julia worked on Betsy Rose she commented that there was a bit more for her to stick the needles into.
A good REM sleep today. She’s rested throughout the day like she should. This is healthy for her. Slow and steady progress. This is just what is needed in a rehab case such as Betsy’s. Her will to live certainly helps a lot too!
She had a visitor today – Sandie brought her some treats and spent some time with her. Betsy Rose is certainly loved – she is a very special girl with a huge love for life. She’s very determined to get better and we do believe that she will be walking on her own again soon.
Evening stroll.
Cookie got a good bath today! She will be going in the hospital on Monday for surgery on Tuesday to remove the squamous cell carcinoma below her right eye.
Wishing everyone a wonderful Sunday!
Sincerely,
Theresa

BHFER 7/19/13 Friday Update
"Mommy Theresa I think it’s a little big! The ears make me feel like a Wookie! But it’s ok, I’m cool, I’ll model it anyway!"
"Mommy!!! Look what Mommy Theresa put on me! It’s too big and it’s PINK! CaryLou and Wally are laughing at me! Please take it off!"
"This one fits me better Mommy Theresa but REALLY – it’s PINK! Wally quit hiding behind me! You’re next – RUN!!!"
Betsy Rose – a mare that believes! She seems to have willed herself to overcome the odds. She loves life and is appreciative of everything done for her. How she came to be in such condition is unimaginable. But what a blessing she is! She’s resting now – Dr. Julia Simonson will be here soon to work on her.
"Come on Freckles! I’m getting out the sling now – Mommy Theresa says we’re going on a walk!"
"Good job Betsy Rose! I like your purple lead! Let’s go!"
"I CAN DO THIS! Told you! This is the first time I’ve made it up the little hill without tripping! Wait for me Freckles – I’m coming!"
At the top of the hill to the barn – Betsy Rose was so proud of herself! She didn’t trip once. Freckles was cheering her on. We let Betsy Rose take a rest and then she walked herself back to the hoist so she could get back in the sling. She’s a very smart girl. She didn’t trip today – we are making progress! Miracles do happen!
"Do I get carrots now? I feel good!"
"Freckles, I told you we’d get carrots!"
Dr. Julia got here at a good time. Betsy Rose’s respiration, heart rate, and temperature are up. She’s eating and drinking and doesn’t appear to feel bad.
Bill and Blodwyn stopped in yesterday – it’s always great to see them! Blodwyn LOVES to give the horses treats – she even made sure that Freckles had a carrot!
Have a great weekend, Everyone!

Theresa

BHFER Tuesday & Wednesday Update
The walk Betsy Rose took last night was 185′ long and she did it on her own (with spotters)!
Look how happy she is – we were all happy! After she got going, she felt good enough to try to walk a bit faster but she tripped and thankfully, we caught her. She recovered and took a rest and then kept going. She’s a very smart little mare with a huge determination!
Remember Gypsy, the mare that was going to be fed to big cats because she was dangerous? I adored this mare. Here is a link to her story when she first arrived at Beauty’s Haven.
We would never knowingly adopt out a horse that is dangerous. Well, being around horses, there is always a chance for danger. But Gypsy is a loving and beautiful soul. Someone just needed to listen to her and communicate with her in a non threatening way and show her that having a relationship with a human could be a good thing. I spent some time on the ground with her – a few short sessions a day over a few weeks is all it took. She wasn’t mean or anything of the sort. As suspected, she was just misunderstood. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=TILUIjO2YlM
She went to her adopted home many weeks ago and she is adored!
The boys will be able to play together in a couple of months. Soon, we will have a castration day before it gets hotter. All 3 will get snipped.
Next week will be busy – and a bit stressful. Solace is tentatively scheduled to go to the hospital on Thursday, June 25th, to have his cracked tooth extracted – it’s all the way in the back of his mouth. Dr. Porter did x-rays and it appears to be cracked. This could be the source of infection that leads to his sinus. The estimate was $450. We have received $200 thus far and need an additional $200. Would anyone like to help with this need? The top picture was what he looked like when he arrived this past December – another horse that would not have lasted much longer. The picture on the bottom was recently taken.
Dr. Ryan was out to look at a spot just under Cookie’s left eye – it’s that dreaded “C” word – squamous cell carcinoma. Cookie is tentatively scheduled to go to the hospital on Monday to have it surgically removed. It does not appear that the eye itself has been compromised and we are very thankful for that. She had been adopted out but came back a few months ago. If anyone would like to help to sponsor Cookie’s surgery and aftercare please let me know – we need to raise $1000 – $1200.
Update: Solace’s surgery is taken care of – thank you everyone! Now we need to get Cookie’s cancer taken care of. SCC is an aggressive cancer and the sooner the surgery the better. Donations can be called directly into Peterson & Smith at 352-237-6151 to help Cookie. Please mention that the donation is for Cookie.
Please consider making a tax deductible donation to help us to continue to help the horses. No amount is too small. Donations can be sent to my PayPal address: theresa or made various ways via the “Donate” page of our website: www.bhfer.org
Thank you all for your love and support.

Monday & Tuesday Update (7/15 & 16/2013)
Monday night:
"Freckles here! Betsy Rose is having another snack – she loves her watermelon! We’re about to get a good night’s sleep. Some of the horses are getting hooficures today and it’s going to be a busy day! We want everyone to know how much appreciate your support not only for my best friend, Betsy Rose, but for all of the 40+ horses here at the rescue – it takes a village!
Beautiful Betsy Rose
Betsy Rose… she believes!!
Tuesday:
Betsy Rose walked all the way from the back of the barn to the front! With spotters, of course!
Getting ready to go back in sling.
Thank you “Horse and Man” for making Betsy Rose your current Bucket Fund recipient!
MEET BETSY ROSE. THERE ARE NO WORDS… June Bucket Fund Welsh Pony Mare. Click here: http://horseandman.com/?p=27151
Someone asked for a picture of LadyBug – the mare with one ear. I took this just a bit ago – she’s at the barn getting a hooficure.
Everyone who supported Harvey by donating for his surgery, praying for him, and sending good thoughts – look what we did! His little leg is working really well!!
Ariel and Celesta are settling in with their adoptive family. They are adored, already. It’s always hard to let them go but they all deserve their own family. And really, the way I look at it, our family circle just keeps getting bigger with the addition of human adopters!
Tomorrow we hope to announce a fundraiser to help Cookie – a 15 year young Paint mare. Dr. Ryan was out to look at a spot just under her left eye yesterday – it’s that dreaded "C" word – squamous cell carcinoma. Cookie is tentatively scheduled to go into the hospital next week to have it surgically removed. It does not appear that the eye itself has been compromised and we are very thankful for that. She had been adopted out but came back a few months ago. If anyone would like to help to sponsor Cookie’s surgery and aftercare please let me know – we need to raise $1000 – $1200. Donks At The Stairs and More!
July 14th – 15th, 2013
Sunday: Betsy Rose has been with us 4 weeks today (she arrived June 14th). She was too weak to stand the day she arrived and for a few days after. The sling has been her life line. It’s taken a lot of time and effort but she is now able to take short walks out of the sling. She needs to build muscle and stamina. She has a long rehab ahead of her but that’s ok – we believe in her! Her positive “can-do!” attitude is helping her every step of the way – we’re very proud of her baby steps!
This photo was taken a couple of days after her arrival. She was too weak to stand or to hold her head up.
Betsy Rose still stays in the sling but we take her out for a few minutes multiple times each day (weather permitting) for some physical therapy.
Betsy Rose has a full cataract in her right eye and sees shadows. She has a small cataract in her left eye. She has great hearing – the door to the feed room squeaks just a tad and when she hears that she perks up and asks for room service!
With all of the real grass around the house to eat why does Penny still insist on trying to eat the fake grass door mat?
After tossing the mat she decided we don’t need a boot cleaner at the bottom of the stairs either. So she picked it up and carried it away!
Our daughter, Katie, with CaryLou – everyone loves this little guy! We are naughty here – we teach the horses to give kisses!
Ariel and Celesta will be going to their new home on Monday. It’s always bittersweet when horses go to their new homes – but this is what we do. I’m very glad they will be staying together. I call Celesta my “little reindeer” because she loves to try to take off like she’s about to fly a sleigh! She is a lap baby but she’s getting too big for that!
It was pouring rain in this picture with the sun shining down on our boys!
Cookie and Ruby on Sunday.

Betsy Rose Saturday Update 07/13/13
Betsy Rose was taped again yesterday – she is steadily gaining weight…
Betsy Rose and Freckles grazing Saturday morning – they had a very good time. And graze they did! Betsy Rose can’t chew, but she tries. Dr. Bess will be back soon to finish working on her teeth. Betsy Rose just needs to get a bit stronger first.
"Isn’t it nice to be out here in the grass Freckles? We won’t be able to stay out long – I get tired easily so I’ll have to go back in my sling. But enjoy while you can!"
"No worries Freckles – you’re not heavy – you’re my best friend! We CAN do this – hold on!"
Betsy Rose received a couple of presents yesterday. In addition to photographs, here is a video we took! I thought you would enjoy seeing how animated and good she felt yesterday. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=RacqHMZTmqY
"I got a present!!! Freckles look!!!! Lets open it!"
After Betsy Rose opened her present and ate a few treats, she was exhausted and took a good nap while Freckles watched her box of goodies. In the package were treats, a Lik-It, halter, and lead! She’s a very special little mare that is surely loved! The Lik-It will help keep her busy in the sling.
And then…
"Check it out Freckles! Another present!"
Betsy Rose and Freckles checking out her new halters!
"Oh my – it’s not just one halter but two! And LOOK Freckles – this one has MY NAME on it!! That’s ME – BETSY ROSE! Check it out! Here Freckles – can you hold my card for a picture? I love them!"
And the package came with a lovely note!
It was like her birthday today! She deserves it!
Betsy Rose’s heart rate continues to improve. Today it was in the low 60’s – and that was after her walk! Much better than 120+ which is what it was when she arrived. I was afraid her little heart would burst from overwork!
Animals rule here at the rescue – Kitty Cat (another rescue) even gets the zero gravity chair!
Have a great day, Everyone!
Sincerely,
Theresa
