Wednesday:
This is the unhandled stud I’ve been visiting. He’s beautiful and is trying to stay calm in the presence of a human. He’s just unsure. But each day, his comfort level is a bit better. Baby steps.
When I arrived at the property on Wednesday evening to check on him, both he and the long horn ran from the other side of the 10 acres. Once they met me at the gate, they had a bit of a standoff. The horse won and followed me into the round pen.
A trailer was set up yesterday (Friday) on the property where the stud is located. I’ve been calling him Dayo. I opened up the coral panel enclosure when I got there so he could go in to explore. He was a little apprehensive at first, but he slowly made his way inside to check it out. Baby steps.
Saturday:

He seemed to be thinking, "Oh wow! I’m on the inside now looking out and it’s not that bad!"
His reward for being brave – a carrot and sprinkle of grain.
And then he departed – calm, cool, collected! Baby steps! A little work each day. Hopefully, soon he will be brave enough to eat in the trailer. Everything is new to him – the slightest little thing startles him. But he’s getting better.
Betsy Rose has a new friend – a gift from Roxy! Roxy hand delivered it with lots of love! It was Roxy’s first day back in about a month – we missed her and her dad, Paul.
Betsy Rose even got a much needed bath.
Several UF students came out today to help give the horses baths. It was a beautiful day – the weather was perfect! This Arabian mare is Cerinade – she’s looking for a forever home.
Little Lucy also got a bath!
Aaleyah Belle and her famous tongue. She still loves to slime everyone. She always will. LOL!!

Genesis – a big teddy bear. His right eye was removed this past year due to glaucoma.
HighTower – he’s beautiful and he’s looking for a forever home where he can walk on trails. He has some arthritis in his left knee. He’s like a big puppy dog!
Indy – he’s looking for a forever home. He has a good year of training on him and is a very sweet boy.
It was a really nice day. We made new friends and the horses got much needed baths!

BH: Thursday, Friday & Saturday Update (10/31/13 – 11/2/13)
Friday:
Good Friday morning everyone! Yesterday, I was sick. Really sick. Depressingly sick. And somehow I managed to go to sleep with a migraine that had me in tears. But this am I woke up (great start!) feeling better, looked out the window, saw the horses munching on their hay, and the sun is peeking out – we are truly blessed! We have visitors coming today and this afternoon, I hope to see Dayo. His light shines brightly – a beautiful soul that wants to trust. For those that have never experienced what little accomplishments mean to someone (like me), trying to bring around a horse that is terribly afraid of humans, well, each little step of progress is amazing. He is coming around. To watch a horse like Dayo new things, to learn to have trust in us humans, to slowly accept that their life is changing, well, it’s an awesome experience. Just the simple thing of learning to drink from a new water bucket took him a few minutes. He’d approach and retreat. Eventually putting his nose in, then a little more, until finally he realized there was water on the bottom of the bucket. When his nose first touched the water he jumped some. But it didn’t eat him up so he put his nose in deeper – soon, all the way in, he slurped the water up, raised his head and stood tall and looked pretty proud! It made my day! From all of us here – have a blessed day!
New things take him some getting used to. Locked him in the coral panels for awhile and he did great.
Once he got brave enough to put his nose in the bucket and tasted the water, we didn’t see his nose for a bit. I wish we could progress a little faster but it it takes a good 1.5 hours out of my day and with the days getting shorter, and being short on volunteers, it’s hard to get away.
I think he really liked the water. And he seemed proud of himself for being braver than the water bucket. Fiona was locked out munching on a flake of hay.
Saturday:
Bonnie went with me today and helped me add some coral panels to include a gate. Next, we’ll start doing a little round pen work. Baby steps. It’s all good.
We had a good day. It’s a little hard to take pics sometimes. LOL
Fiona lives on the property with Dayo. They can’t catch her either. I’ve had her in the trailer many times and she’ll approach me – she’ll eat out of my hand. But I’m not a cow person and those long horns look pretty serious so I’m happy with giving her some hay while I work with Dayo for now. She does have very kind eyes.
Fiona is one of the prettiest cow’s I’ve ever met! I took this this afternoon at sunset.
Saturday Morning:
The vet is on the way out. Last night, Bonnie was giving out hay and found Ebony laying down which is not like her – especially at hay time. She stayed in a stall last night where we could keep eyes on her. Today, she isn’t feeling much better and she hasn’t gone poop. She isn’t demonstrating discomfort today but we don’t want this to become a crisis so she’ll be examined – tubed and oiled. Was hoping to avoid this – Falabella mini’s are so small. But the vet has small tubes. If only Ebony would go poop we wouldn’t have to do this to her. Normally, when she goes in a stall, she goes poop. But not this time.

Bronson is doing well! But what else do you see in the photo? Yes – that is Betsy Rose’s butt showing a little muscle!

Princess needs prayers…
Update from last night:
Princess, a 25 year old Arabian mare is not feeling well. She has metabolic issues and a history of founder. She’s so sweet. She has had an adoptive home 3 different times and each time, just before leaving, something happened. She foundered, then she almost lost her eye, then she choked and foundered again. She just has so many issues we made her a Sanctuary horse. Something told me to go check on her this evening when I was scooping one of the smaller paddocks and I found her laying down by the shelter. She has an upset tummy and diarrhea. Her temperature is normal and she’s drinking. She’s tucked into a stall for the night and seems better but my little voice is saying she needs a complete physical, including blood work. I’d like to have the vet out in the am. Estimate is about $175. Would anyone like to help Princess? She was, in her younger days, one of the top 10 cow horses in Canada. Now, she is a grand old mare that is loved very much.
Update this am:
Princess took a turn for the worse early this am. Her temp was down to 98.5 from her normal of about 99.9. Her gums were pale and her RR was slightly elevated. Her HR was normal. I called Dr. Ryan out first thing. Princess had been pooping but Dr. Ryan oiled in case there is sand in her gut. We did the "poop with water in the glove test" and there was very, very little sand. Even if you give psyllium, sand can settle in the gut and cause irritation. Princess was tubed and oiled. She got water and electrolytes via tube. Blood tests are being done – sometimes I think I’d prefer a colic over colitis. Dr. Ryan did rectal her and did not feel any twists or impaction. Princess is resting in a stall. I detected an odor in her mouth last night. I asked a couple of others if they smelled it and they didn’t so I thought it was just me but I smelled it again this am. Dr. Ryan also smelled it and thinks there is also something going on in her mouth so Dr. Bess will be out late this evening. We’re going to need additional help with her vetting today, whatever course of meds/treatment she may need, and help with Dr. Bess’ fee. I’ll know more tonight. A generous donation of $175 was made last night for the initial estimate but with everything done today and Dr. Bess coming tonight we’re going to need more help.

Introducing Eagle Oct 24, 2013
I apologize that this didn’t go out last week – I just found it in my “Draft” folder.
Remember Elian? He had been on the ground for a couple of days before we got a call on September 19, 2013, to see if we could help. When we arrived Dr. Ryan did all he could – he ran fluids and gave meds – we tried to help Elian get up but he just could not put weight on his back leg. Dr. Ryan believed there was a fracture. Elian also had a large open wound that wasn’t new – it appeared to have been there for a couple of weeks. Elian suffered. He did. I hope and pray that in the few hours that I was with Elian, he felt love. We Elian now flies with the Heavenly Herd.
The pony that we got a call about on Wednesday from an anonymous person was at the same farm that Elian lived at. Sadly, this pony saw his friend Elian suffer for days and was with him when he crossed Rainbow Bridge. We have named Elian’s friend, Eagle. Eagle was living on sand and standing in poop and he was pretty depressed.
Thankfully, others saw Eagle suffering and picked up the phone and made a call for help. They likely saved his life. The owner reluctantly released Eagle to us and he is here and safe now – we just need to pray he works through his colic. He was examined and treated for colic immediately after he arrived. He had an irritated gut due to both parasites and sand.
Eagle looks tired, very tired. Maybe it’s relief?

Adoptions, New Friends, Hooficures and More
October 26th – 27th, 2013
We hope everyone had a great weekend. It’s been very busy here, as usual.
Some really bittersweet news – our darling donkeys, Penny and Penelope will be going to their adoptive home in just a few days! They are hilarious and we’re going to miss them terribly. But they are going to have a blast in their new home. Their adoptive family fostered Story for us – they are only a few miles away. They are going to be spoiled rotten! They will have their own home and humans for the holidays!

Kylie went with me to spend time with Dayo and Fiona on Saturday. We distracted Fiona with some hay so Dayo could focus on us. I usually go alone but I wanted to gently try to move Dayo a little forward today and thought it best that someone go with me. Plus, it gives Dayo another human who he can learn to trust.
Major accomplishment on Saturday! We totally enclosed Dayo in the coral panels where he had no place to go but into the trailer. Kylie sat in front of the trailer and I was behind him controlling the coral panels. He was attentive to both of us but he never got upset once. The noise from a squeaky door made him jump a couple of times, but he didn’t try to bolt and run away. He was very calm about it. Baby steps.
Dayo and I had a long conversation today about his future. He is now sticking his head inside the trailer to eat his hay while his back feet remain outside on the ground. I’m moving the hay further into the trailer each day. He’s calmly staying behind the coral panel pen that leads to the trailer. He doesn’t seem to be very worried about being able to run as he was even a week ago when something startled him. He just sort of jumps in place and then settles back down. Fiona happily munched on her own hay as I was working with Dayo.
Look at that backside! There’s a lot of power there! I don’t want Dayo to have a bad experience. And my time with him is my quiet time. I hate the thought of him potentially getting hurt if pushed too hard – he may never let anyone doctor him. We are making progress so I’m happy.
Here’s Betsy Rose on Sunday – she’s enjoying the weather – we all are!
Peggy Sue got her hooficure on Sunday. We have to put her in the sling in order for Laura to do her feet. For those that don’t know Peggy Sue, she has a bum back leg. It’s basically straight – it doesn’t bend. Her pelvis was fractured in a few places many years ago when her owners pulled her baby from her. Many thanks to Kim and Laura for their help and patience!
Eagle got a hooficure yesterday, too. Kim gently rubbed his face and neck and introduced him to some calming oils. But he was fine – a very sweet horse!

Monday PM & Tuesday AM Update October 21st – 22nd.
Yesterday was a picture perfect day! Betsy Rose stood in the sun with her nose in the air. It was like she was just soaking up the sun and the moment.
Bronson was very good for his hooficure yesterday. He’s so sweet, but I feel bad for him. The other boys don’t want much to do with him. He follows Bo around sometimes, but mostly he hangs out around the office or at the front of the house waiting for a human to come out. It’s so important for babies to be socialized with other horses when they are young. Getting human handling is great, but they need to form relationships with horses, too, and they need to learn the ways of the horse. Living alone is better than living in a situation where you are hungry and at risk, but even just having a goat friend may have helped. Soon, we will introduce him to Penny. She will make him feel better.
Gracie also got a hooficure yesterday. She needs to go on a diet as well!
There were some activities going on down the road yesterday and together with Fiona wanting to try out the buffet, Dayo had a tough time staying focused.
Fiona is a very sweet cow – she’s going to live with 3 other cows. She greeted me with moo’s and must have sung to me a dozen times yesterday.
She was a very brave girl!
Fiona is now even eating out of my hand!
CaryLou will be going to the hospital this morning at 8 am. I’m sure he will do fine – it’s a quick out patient procedure. Watching him gimp around here hasn’t been easy. We were going to wait and give it more time and get him moving over some poles, etc. but he gets to where he just can’t move and he gets upset. CaryLou never gets upset – he just gets even. Well, this is his own leg he’s fussing with and he looks pretty down about it. We’ve had quite a few mini’s that have had the procedure and they all did very well.
Wally is looking at CaryLou’s locked up back leg and seems to be saying, "Wow! That is really sad, CaryLou!" Poor CaryLou was stuck for awhile.

BHFER Sunday & Monday AM Update October 19th – 20th
Does anyone wonder what we were doing yesterday? Yes, it was laundry day at Beauty’s Haven!
A little progress with Dayo on Sunday. It was windy and the trailer doors would squeak and scare Dayo into orbit. I need to remember to take some WD-40 next time to spray on the trailer doors. Then a few shavings would blow around and that scared him too. It’s really sad – whoever had him when he was a baby, should have worked with him at least enough for him to feel comfortable being handled.
There was a tub with a handful of grain inside the trailer too – just about 18" inside the doorway. I’ll check in the morning to see if he got brave enough to go for it.

Lacey had been waiting her whole life for this. Her own little boy loves her dearly and she takes great care of him. It’s things like this that help me to keep going. Rescue is hard work and its draining – physically, mentally, and financially. But just look at the smile on his face. I spent over a year with Lacey and it was so hard to let her go. But this is what we do. There will be another to take her spot. Turning away any horse breaks my heart. Congratulations Lacey and Dalton – so glad you have each other!

Smiles and Ribbons!
October 12th – 15th, 2013
Betsy Rose enjoyed visitors on Saturday.
I actually took some time on Sunday to go for a little ride myself. It was nice, very nice! The weather has been perfect!
Baby Boo is getting big! Daisy’s tumors appear to be shrinking!!
Remember Starlight? She was a rescue we took in last year that was “unwanted”. She had been living in horrible conditions. Look at what she and Jordan accomplished today!!! I’m convinced there are no “unwanted” horses. Some may be misplaced, but they are all wanted, IMO. I’m so proud of both of these girls – just look at the ribbons!

Look at Lacey with her new human – this is a reminder of why it may take us longer than some to find homes for horses. It has to be the right fit – the right connection. Our goal is to find a forever home. When the time, horse, and human are right, well, great things happen. Look at that SMILE! PRICELESS!
The boys have somewhat of a winter coat already – they are so cute! CaryLou still struts. LOL

Gentleman loves his tree with overhead mister. And the others love Gentleman. So, they gather each day – under the tree!

Bo has become quite the babysitter! Bo is the horse that was dropped off in the middle of a dirt road and abandoned. He walked from the road to a tree and that’s where he stood all day long likely waiting for his owner to come back for him. They never did. It was a hot, sweltering feels like 100 degree day, with no water – from at least 7 am that morning until we picked him up late that evening. I think he was likely a cow horse that got injured and could no longer work. He’s got the moves, but he is very lame from an old injury.

BH Update October 10th & 11th, 2013
It was a bittersweet day yesterday as Baby Ray and Lacey left for their new homes.
Baby Ray and Lobo chatting yesterday morning. Chico and Lobo are a pair of bookend mini’s that need a good home!
Garan had his front feet x-rayed yesterday – he’s been ouchy. He’s got abscesses in both front feet. The left popped yesterday.
Bouie is much more comfortable in his new boots! Silly boy – likes to make faces!
Peaches getting settled into her winter home with Jamie. Peaches is going to have fun taking care of Cassidy in the local winter show series. I’m sure Jamie will post pics and keep us updated on how they do! Peaches is going to love the attention! I hope to make it to some of the shows. Thanks Jamie!
Run Bronson! Run!
Cookie remained at the hospital last evening and Dr. Hughes planned to inject the cancerous area today. Cookie will be returning to her foster home following her injections. Divinity misses her, I’m sure.
Daisy and Boo are doing ok. Daisy’s tumors appear to be shrinking! Please keep them in your prayers.
