Betsy Rose and Freckles want to help Divinity!
Hey everyone, Freckles had a great idea for a fundraiser! Here is how the idea came about:
Freckles – "Betsy Rose, I heard the humans talking about Divinity and her cancer. They said she needs to go to UF to have her eye removed. But …she has a cancer place at her nostril and the vets there need to determine if it can be treated or not. It’s in a place where, if it is deep enough, they may not be able to remove it because it would go into her gum. But no matter what – can we please help Mommy Theresa raise money to help with this?"
Betsy Rose – "How can we help, Freckles?"
Freckles – "Well, would you be willing to give up some of your tail hair? Everyone loves you – the humans could make a horsehair bracelet from your tail hair and auction it off! If we could raise the money it would take a lot of worry off of Mommy Theresa."
Betsy Rose – "Wow! That’s a GREAT idea! Here – cut it now! Go get Mommy Theresa and let’s do it! Everyone has been so good to me and Divinity is such a nice mare! She deserves a chance just like I did! I DO want to help! You’re an awesome and thoughtful friend Freckles!"
So, today we will start the bidding on a beautiful horse hair bracelet made from Betsy Rose’s hair! Bidding will start at $50. Please bid in $5 increments. Bidding will end 8-20-13 at noon. Please share and happy bidding!! Current bid: $330 PS: please don’t worry – we are collecting Betsy Rose’s tail hairs when we brush her tail – they are falling out. So is her mane. But this is ok – new hair is growing in.
Betsy Rose whinnying in excitement about the thought of helping Divinity!
This is Divinity – the mare that Freckles and Betsy Rose are helping to raise funds for. Dr. Porter referred her to the University of Florida for an assessment and to potentially have her left eye removed – she has squamous cell carcinoma…. She also has SCC under her right nostril – this area is of most concern. The vets at UF will have to determine if this area can be treated – it may be too large and too deep. We hope to get her in on Wednesday. Divinity is otherwise, in good health and is perky and interested in everything around her – especially the boys. Divi is at a foster home where she has her own stall and a green grass paddock where she can go at night.
Betsy Rose patiently waits to get out of her sling.
Betsy after a meal and now sleepy. But it doesn’t stop her from visiting the feed room door (again)!
Lucy is a miniature horse that has Big Head Disease. The vets had recommended she be put down – she had multiple issues and her prognosis was grim. I went to meet her at the hospital and felt a connection. She was only 3 years old and deserved a chance to get better – and she did! She is another miracle! She gets fed a special diet due to her condition. Lucy needs a large container of Well-Gel which is $232. Would anyone like to help Lucy? It will last her several weeks. Donations towards this can be called directly into the vet’s office at 352-237-6151. Thank you! – UPDATE – this has been covered.
For those of you who remember Kami (Comet), her mom, Haley, and dad, Rusty…. She’s still a hoot! Could you imagine her with CaryLou? Thanks for sharing this Melissa and George!

BHFER Weekend Part 2 & Monday Update
Morgan LaFaye enjoyed extra attention on Saturday. Roxy rode her for a bit – they had a good time!
I love seeing smiles…
"Hi everyone! we hope you all had a great weekend! The humans here are very busy, but I asked Mommy Theresa to let you all know that me and Freckles are doing great! And I want to thank you all for caring about me – I never dreamed life could be this good!"
‘Did someone say snack? Well, we horses here do eat a bit. I’d like to ask if anyone has any Purina coupons for grain that you don’t need, Mommy Theresa sure could use them. The mailing address is PO Box 53, Morriston, FL 32668. And of course, if you want to send any treats this way that would be great too!"
Betsy Rose LOVES attention – she is like a shadow sometimes. But it’s nice to turn around and find her in your face!
Solace is doing well. We monitor him closely and take his temperature twice a day. He’s not had anymore problems with infection since he went to the hospital. I hope it stays that way. Here he was this am standing under the mister in the tree with Gentleman.
I want to share another wonderful update from one of our adopted family members. Kara adopted Sammi and baby Joy a couple of years ago. Sammi was headed to slaughter when we intercepted her – she was pregnant. I remember Joy’s birth like it was yesterday. She hit the ground running! Both Sammi and Joy are doing great!
From Kara: “Saturday was a GREAT day. First time on Joy! Can you see that smile, how about the tears?!! Did I say it was GREAT day!!”
Lynn mowed/dragged the large paddocks on Saturday. They look so nice – I wish they would stay like this! And I wish we had green grass all year around. The cold season is coming – we need to start our winter hay drive soon. Hay costs $545 a ton here and even more south of us. We go through a ton of hay about every 4 – 5 days in the cold months. Doing the math makes me shudder.
Kylie braided Betsy Rose’s mane on Saturday – she’s so stylish!
Not long after Barbara arrived on Saturday the rains came. She took it in stride and went to work anyway!
After the storms passed through on Saturday afternoon, look who I found under the rainbow – Beauty!
Wishing everyone a wonderful week.
Sincerely,
Theresa

BHFER Saturday Update Aug 17th, 2013
All of the baby boys are doing well. I’ve been working with Wally on the lead and with his manners. He likes to turn and kick if you don’t feed him fast enough. He’s a hoot! CaryLou still coughs some and the heat doesn’t help him – he has a collapsing trachea. Harvey is as cute as a button and doing well.
Genesis and Bella – both are beautiful!
And then there is Penny and her mom, Penelope. They are like big puppy dogs and they are great entertainment! Penny likes to chase the golf cart and steal our water bottles.
Aaleyah Belle still loves to slime people! She’ll never change – we love her dearly.
Little E and Jenny dancing. He doesn’t like getting a bath. LOL
Cookie. She’s so sweet.
Betsy Rose has declared this stall to be hers and Freckles. She wanders freely around the barn except in the dead heat of the day when she goes in her stall and stays cool with her Port-A-Cool and two fans. The new fly mister system helps tremendously!!! No, this little mare isn’t spoiled at all. Neither is Freckles.
We had storms pass through this afternoon and look who I found under the rainbow – Beauty!
Wishing everyone a wonderful Sunday.

Theresa

Betsy Rose – our little survivor
Betsy Rose – our little survivor. The courage this little mare has is incredible! One of these days I’ll share in an album some of her photos that were taken throughout her rehab. I didn’t share many because they would have made you cry. What she endured was horrible – but it was reality and needs to be made available to be seen in order for people to better understand what humans did, or didn’t do to her.
We need to start pushing for strong laws to protect the victims. We must be their voice. You’ll be able to choose if you want to see the photos and videos or not. Some will bring tears, anger, and feelings that words can’t describe. While I focus on the positive things with my posts – I don’t want to forget the pure hell Betsy Rose endured. If her story can prevent just one animal from being treated as she did what a blessing that would be. And if, through her rehab, others can learn what rehabing a horse in her condition entails and it helps them to help others – that too would be a blessing. It’s not easy. It’s an emotional roller coaster ride. It’s physically and mentally challenging. But it’s so worth it. I adore this mare and I thank God and all of you for helping us to make sure that her future will be everything her past should have been.
Sincerely,
Theresa

Betsy Rose and Cookie Update
August 14th, 2013
Betsy Rose had a good day yesterday. She is now out of her sling for about 14 hours each day! Dr. Bess Darrow (Tune-Ups Equine Dentistry) will be here later today to wore a bit more on her teeth and then she should be able to graze which I know she will love! She pretty much has quit even trying to graze – she can’t grind her teeth to chew so she’s and working for nothing. LOL She’s a smart pony!
This Afternoon:
Betsy Rose did great for Dr. Bess! As soon as the sun goes down, she’ll be out of her sling and we’ll see how she does on grass. It will be the first time in years that she’ll be able to actually grind/chew. The heat has been horrid today, so we left her in the sling with fans and the mister on her. She is, totally, spoiled.
Betsy Rose – seeing is believing! She’s like a little lawn mower! She hasn’t picked her head up since she realized she can actually chew and swallow!!! She brings back flashbacks of good times when our human kids were growing up! The many “firsts” that we experienced! Little things that mean so much.
Cookie received a package yesterday with some nice surprises! She LOVES getting presents! Thank you Kathy Malloy, Donna Trest, Becca Bazhaw Mead and the Equine Cancer Society! And many thanks to everyone who helped Cookie via the raffle by the Equine Cancer Society! Cookie is doing wonderful. Now, let’s pray she continues to do well and that Divinity will follow in her footsteps and do well also! Uh oh – I was just told that more packages have arrived!
Oh my gosh look at this!!!!! Cookie got a beautiful and personalized fly mask that provides extra protection from the sun which was made by Equinesunvisor.com! Thank you Becca and the Equine Cancer Society!!!
Before calling it a day I’d like to ask everyone to include Divi in your prayers tonight. Tomorrow afternoon, she will be going to the hospital. I pray for a good prognosis and many more happy years ahead for her.
The horses depend on us and we need to depend on others to make this possible. We are not funded by any County, State, or Federal governments. Donations can be made by various methods via our website: theresa Thank you!

Betsy Rose – And a Swish of Her Tail and 273 lbs! Updates on Others!
August 9th – 11th, 2013
Dr. Julia came to visit with Betsy Rose on Friday. Penny greeted Dr. Julia as usual – she ran alongside her car until it was parked and then went right around to greet her.
After a few scratches, off we went to see Betsy Rose. Well, she wasn’t where I left her. We walked around the barn and no Betsy. We called for her. Then we heard it – an itty bitty whinny. Guess where we found her? In the shavings room where we keep a couple of bales of hay – she had helped herself and made a mess in the process! But it was all good – it just means she’s ready to get her back teeth done! Dr. Bess will be here on Wednesday to finish her up!
Betsy Rose – slowly but surely gaining. She’s up to about 273 lbs.
I know this picture is fuzzy but do you see something you’ve never seen before? Yes, Betsy Rose is now swishing her tail! Muscle is returning! It took weeks before she could even lift her tail to go poop. Now she is able to swish! So proud of this little mare!!!
“Mommy Theresa says a lot of humans think that we are adorable Freckles!”
Penny is hilarious! “Please Dr. Julia – just one little kiss on the nose?”
Penny knows that Auntie Karen Andreu brings apples! That’s Sisco in the back – he got apples too.
Solace after breakfast. Gentleman and Little E are in the background beneath a tree that has an overhead mister in it. The misters help tremendously – wish we had more trees and misters but we are very thankful for the ones we do have. When we moved here a few years ago, we had no trees and it was miserable with no shade. Shade is a true blessing.
Solace got a bath today by one of our awesome volunteers – Katherine Rivera!
Genesis enjoying the shade of another tree.
Garran and Little E – both Arabian geldings.
This evening, I played with Beauty for the first time since she foundered and rotated earlier this year! For months, it was thought she wouldn’t be able to go back to work but I never stopped believing in her. She needs some conditioning, but that’s ok – she’s sound! Having patience can be hard sometimes, but it was well worth the wait! Beauty is the reason Beauty’s Haven came to be! I’m so happy!
Please consider a one time donation or a recurring monthly donation to help the Beauty’s Haven horses – no amount is too small and all contributions are greatly appreciated! 08/09/13 BH Friday Update
Dr. Porter visited with Betsy Rose today.
Divinity was also seen by Dr. Porter today. She has cancer below and in her left eye. Dr. Porter has referred her to UF. We expect a call back from UF on Monday to discuss having her left eye removed and to have an area on her nostril treated. Otherwise, she is in good health and is perky and interested in everything around her – especially the boys. Divi is at a foster home where there she has her own stall and a green grass paddock to go out in at night.
We are dealing with 3 patients with SCC at this time. Cookie, Sisco, and Divinity. Cookie had surgery to remove the SCC from under her eye and a spot on her face a couple of weeks ago. The area looks good. There is a very small spot lower on the same side of her face that is also being treated with creme. Sisco is doing well too. Dr. Porter is very happy with his progress. He has one little spot that we will continue to treat with cream for awhile.
Ceri and Nadia were late for breakfast. Peaches was having a feast – but not for long. I haven’t seen Ceri move that fast in awhile!
Nevada picked today to be sound. Why does this happen? He’s lame everyday. But today he was sound. We’re going to put him back to work slowly and see how he does.
Harvey – he’s so cute but is growing like a weed!
Have a great weekend, Everyone!

Thursday Update 08/08/13
Dr. Julia Simonson and Remona Seckinger came by to see Betsy Rose yesterday. We wanted to review the meds/supplements that Betsy Rose is getting and rule out any potential lung issues – she still has a cough and a snotty nose off and on. Dr. Julia ultra-sounded Betsy’s lungs and they looked good – whew! It was really nice to meet Remona – meeting people in person who we are friends with over the Internet is great – I love sharing Betsy Rose with others! She’s just adorable!
Bonnie is a new volunteer at the rescue. Where she gets her energy I have no clue! LOL! But we sure do appreciate her and her time. And the horses love her – thank you Bonnie!
Look where we are! Thank you Dutch Henry and TrailBlazer magazine!
This is sweet little Morgan – she is available for adoption. Pamela Zarem has been fostering Morgan. Pam’s daughter, Brittany, has been riding her. Thanks Pam and Brittany!
This is Nevada. He was 1 of 3 horses we took in this past December. We called them the Christmas Trio – all were very thin. The other 2 were mares we named Sachet and Noelle. Authorities working the case asked us if we could take them – otherwise they would end up at auction. Taking 3 in at once was a huge undertaking but they needed help and it was the holidays. Over time, all recovered. Sachet and Noelle have found homes. I have ridden Nevada – he is a very nice horse. One day, I saw him running and playing with the 3 year olds and he came in lame. Dr. Porter will be out tomorrow to examine Nevada, check on Cookie’s eye and a new spot on the side of her face, examine the mare with the SCC in her eye and on her nose, and to follow-up on Solace. We are looking for sponsors to help with Dr. Porter’s visit tomorrow with the exception of Cookie – she should be covered thanks to funds raised by the Equine Cancer Society through an online auction fundraiser (many thanks to ECS and the participants of that too!). The first was taken after Nevada’s arrival this past December. The one on the right was taken a couple of weeks ago. He deserves his very own human but until we figure out why he is lame and identify a treatment plan and any possible limitations, he will remain at Beauty’s Haven.

Theresa

Betsy Rose & CaryLou Aug 6, 2013
August 6th, 2013
I forgot to share this last night. I was in the feed room getting ready to start tucking horses in and I look up and who do I see looking back in at me? Yes, Betsy Rose. She’s never wandered into the barn aisle way before – we had a long… talk about that a few weeks ago and how I’d prefer her stay away from it because if she were to fall on the concrete it would hurt. And she did – she never tried to walk into the barn when she was out of her sling. Until last evening. She walked right in and stood outside of the door waiting for me to come out. I think she’s getting better.
CaryLou, his true colors.
Sincerely,
Theresa
