FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MORRISTON, Florida, October 9, 2017
[dropcaps] B [/dropcaps] eauty’s Haven Farm and Equine Rescue, Inc., is honored to be the recipient of a $5,000 grant from Best Friends Animal Society. This award will greatly assist the rescue with the mounting veterinary fees of their 32 plus equines, many of which have special needs.
As the recipient of this award, Beauty’s Haven can continue its most important mission of raising public awareness about the standards of care that are necessary to keep horses safe and healthy while providing assistance, when possible, to horse owners experiencing a short period of financial hardship. Beauty’s Haven also provides information to members of the community, regarding the steps that must be taken when one encounters an equine that is being abused or neglected. As Theresa Batchelor, President and Co-Founder of Beauty’s Haven so aptly states:
“Horses are majestic creatures that have helped mankind for thousands of years – they give so much and ask for so little. They help mend hearts, they forgive and love unconditionally.”
At Beauty’s Haven, horses that have been neglected, abused, and/or abandoned are given a second chance at life, a life without pain and worry, a life with dignity and respect. Equines that are no longer needed, wanted or are useful to their owners are welcomed at the rescue with the goal of eventually placing them in loving, forever homes. Working together with other organizations, Beauty’s Haven tries to find placement for as many equines as possible before they end up in the slaughter pipeline where they would be at a high risk of being sold to kill buyers, then trucked across the borders to Canada and Mexico, where they would be brutally slaughtered for human consumption.
Beauty’s Haven offers sanctuary to a limited number of horses with special needs regardless of age or breed. The rescue has taken in babies as young as two hours old, pregnant mares and senior horses – the oldest rescue was 43 years old! Oftentimes, Beauty’s Haven accepts equines into their program that other rescue organizations may refuse, due to the time consuming and/or costly rehabilitation needs of the horse. Quality of life is always a determining factor in deciding the future of each horse. Beauty’s Haven is pro-life and never is an equine euthanized to make room for another.
Beauty’s Haven has an excellent care team that includes professionals in both traditional and holistic medicine, dentistry and equine podiatry. A horse will be humanely euthanized, however, when they appear to be experiencing more pain than pleasure, are terminally ill or critically injured and all courses of treatment have been thoroughly explored. An animal is never permitted to suffer. Beauty’s Haven has accepted horses with birth defects, broken bones, mutilations, cancer, blindness, COPD and Cushing’s disease as well as those that were starved and extremely emaciated and had other serious diseases. Other animals in need such as dogs, cats, pigs, birds, goats, a lamb and a baby calf have also found sanctuary at Beauty’s Haven, ‘Where Life Begins, Again!’

OUR SPECIAL NEEDS HORSES AND A WONDERFUL NEW MATCH GAME!
It seems as if we are constantly asking for help and that isn’t easy for me. But we are a charity which operates solely from donations and grants and we must depend upon help from others in order to make a difference in the lives of our horses.
Our golf cart batteries have unfortunately, died – and we do properly maintain our tools and equipment. I must admit that it truly, was no fun getting towed back to the barn in the darkness of night! The estimated cost of the batteries is at least $900 (for all 6). We will be purchasing from a different source this time – the batteries that have failed only lasted about 2.5 years. We plan to purchase Trojans with a life expectancy of 6 to 10 years which will bring us much peace of mind.
We are also in need of a pallet (50 bags) of Fibre-Beet from Emerald Valley. We are down to our last bag and are borrowing a bag from a friend until we can get our pallet. Buying it by the pallet, which usually lasts a year, is the most economical way in which to purchase Fibre-Beet (even with the cost of shipping). Betsy Rose, Little E and the other special needs horses that comprise our beloved little herd are fed this along with a ration balancer and needed supplements. Betsy Rose and E are fed five times a day (smaller portions) – they are hard keepers. Betsy Rose has Cushings and a history of choke so she has to be fed a soft diet. Little E has teeth, but they are so worn down, that he, too, must have a soft diet and when the weather is like it is now, he gets gas colic quite often unless he’s on Fibre-Beet. When we have colicky horses, this is a great way in which to keep them hydrated. Fibre-Beet is excellent for horses that have, or are at risk for, laminitis, ulcers, and Cushing’s. A bag retails for $41 but we get a good discount and while we do have some funds already set aside, we still need help as the estimated cost is $1100.
We were truly blessed to learn on Friday that two wonderful supporters have come forth to offer a most generous Match Game, whereby, all donations up to $1500 will be matched dollar for dollar to assist with the cost of the replacement batteries as well as a pallet of Fibre-Beet. If you would like to play the Match Game, you may do so via various means here on our website or via our PayPal address: bhfer@earthlink.net. If donating via PayPal, please designate your donation to, ‘Golf Cart/Feed Match Game.’ If you select the tab for ‘Friends or Family,’ no fees will be deducted from your contribution. Please be assured that all donations are greatly appreciated and no amount is ever considered as being too small.
On behalf of all the ‘Velvet Nosers’ at Beauty’s Haven, thank you so very much for your love and support!

SHE IS STUNNING AND SHE NEEDS A HOME!
Thoroughbred • Black • Mare • 15 Hh • DOB 2007
Zahara is a stunning black Thoroughbred mare that was born in 2007. We were told that her original owners gave her to someone years ago. In 2012, while at that home, she sustained a neck injury. Dr. Michael Porter took x-rays which indicated a fracture at C-4/5. In 2014, her original owners took her back. Not long thereafter, the owners called Dr. Porter because Zahara was looking poorly. Dr. Porter found her to be very thin and depressed. He called us and asked the question – could we take her? Of course we would!
Zahara was transported to the rescue where she settled in nicely. She was vetted, her teeth were done, and her feet were trimmed. Her rehabilitation program went well. She just needed a proper diet – there was no medical condition that led to her being skin on bones. Dr. Porter x-rayed her neck to compare it to the original injury and he was amazed at how well it had healed! She’s a very pleasant and honest mare. While Zahara will never race, jump, or pull a cart or buggy, she will make a nice trail or companion horse.
Zahara has not as yet been started under saddle. She will require an experienced horse person with a background of training horses using natural horsemanship techniques. A training plan will be included in the adoption contract. If interested, please take time to read our adoption procedures/requirements information, that can be found on our Adoption Page.
Beauty’s Haven Farm and Equine Rescue, Inc., reserves the right to approve or deny a potential adoptive home at BHFER’s sole discretion.

Our Rescue of “Misfits”
This is how our day started on Friday. Peggy Sue was down on her bad side and couldn’t get up. When this happens, Peggy Sue doesn’t panic – she just lays there and waits for us to help her. We roll her over and she usually rests for a few minutes and then gets up on her own and runs off. She can’t bend her back leg – it’s stiff – much like a peg leg.
Before Peggy Sue came to us, she was giving birth and her humans tried to pull her baby out. Peggy Sue’s pelvis fractured in three places. She’s a happy little mare that rules the others and she reminds them of that often. We have to put her in a sling to have her feet done, but she doesn’t mind at all.
Peggy Sue is a prime example of why we insist that there is a human on the farm at all times.
We are the “rescue of misfits” but that’s perfectly fine with us – they are all deserving and precious.

Aaleyah Belle’s infamous tongue.
Jiminy and Cricket continue to improve each day. Dr. Mangan (DVM, DACVO) from AVS in Gainesville checked out their eyes and all is good! Cricket’s old eyelid injury is doing great! Dr. Mangan has been part of our awesome care team for years – even before he went to AVS – when he worked at UF. You can learn more about him by clicking here.
Dr. Specht was also at the farm last week to examine Waylon.

Kandi and Shaker are Home & Special Visitors
We are so very thankful to Jayne O’Brien Myrick for opening her heart and home to Kandi and Shaker! Many thanks to Pamela Zarem of Double B, for transporting the girls to their new home. And many thanks to Susie and Catherine for helping with the transportation costs.
These mares are gorgeous and happy and are settling nicely into their new home. I know that I will never again have to worry about their well being.
Jayne adopted Bo from us a few years ago. Bo is a horse that was found abandoned in a tree farm. He was left, ground tied, all day long with no water. He was being a good boy – standing there as he had been trained to do, waiting for his humans to return for him. But they never did. He had no idea that he’d been abandoned, but now, Bo, Kandi, and Shaker are forever safe with their adoptive mom, Jayne. God is good!
Kandi and Shaker’s life before they arrived at Beauty’s Haven in 2010, was a horrible one – it was a large hoarding case of many horses. Shaker survived (many didn’t) with a baby (Kandi) on her side and she was pregnant again. Kandi is her best friend – it means the world to us that they will forever remain together. This was Shaker, lying helplessly on the ground, a few days before they were released to us. Kandi, as a foal, was standing nearby with an older mare named Asiya – both watched on as Shaker suffered through colic. If you look closely, you can see the remains of others that sadly did not survive, scattered in the background.
Michie and Bruce visited last week! We haven’t seen them since their last visit ten years ago! It was great to see them once again and Betsy Rose truly loved the extra attention.
Ruby just loves it when Katie visits with her.
It was really great to see Barbara over the weekend!
We are truly blessed to have so many wonderful friends and supporters!

Jiminy’s Visit with Dr. Bess
This alone could make a horse depressed as well as cause weight loss. This is usually caused by issues with the teeth and it could indicate that he’s experiencing pain in his mouth.
We fed soft, mushy meals to Jiminy and Cricket until they could be seen by the dentist. Both Minis are up there in age – it could be that they don’t have many teeth, or their teeth are worn down, or both.
Dr. Bess and her assistant, Ashley, are always great with the horses and they do a remarkable job!
Jiminy had no idea what was in store for him and we had no idea that his teeth were so bad. We’re very grateful to Dr. Bess for responding so quickly.
Jiminy’s teeth were a mess. He could not chew his food and in the process of trying, it was painful.
You can give a horse all the food in the world but if they are unable to chew it and grind it up in order for the body to process it correctly, they are going to drop in body weight.
