Dr. Bess was here yesterday and got a few horses done – including CJ. He needs sponsors – would anyone like to be a monthly or one time sponsor to help him?

CJ and Dr. Darrow - Happy Teeth!

Is Betsy Rose not adorable? She has a pink blankie for inside use and another pink one for outside use (Thank you Tammie Curtis and Tania Young)! And Betsy has a sheet – she’s all set for the cold! Her beautiful wreath in the background was made and gifted by Christy Flower! Thank you Christy!

Betsy Rose

CaryLou – he’s still a hoot! The mini’s all have the fuzzies and are well insulated for the cold.

This is Matilda – she is about 18 years old. Would anyone like to help us to help her? Her rehab is going well – when she arrived a few weeks ago, she was very thin and she had a few other issues. Her teeth are worn down to almost nothing. She eats a LOT and gets a soft mash 3 times a day. Below is a “before” picture and a current picture. Please consider helping us to help Matilda with a one time donation or recurring monthly donation. Our PayPal address is theresa. Other ways to donate can be found on our website at www.bhfer.org. No amount it too small. Thank you! PS – if you donate to help Matilda, please annotate it on your donation or send me a PM.

Matilda is doing really well – she is a very sweet girl that everyone just adores. Love those long ears!

Baby Ray left the hospital today! He’s amazed the wonderful people at the hospital with his slow but steady recovery. Please, continue to pray for his continued recovery.

Good golly – look at Miss Mollie! Her little whinny is adorable – just like her! She is actually grazing a bit on grass this morning. Just a little. She didn’t have any grass at all where she came from. She’s carrying herself better in the sling. Her left eye is still a bit swollen, but its better. I’m so glad she hung on that night. It must have been scary for her.

Update! Good news and bad. We let Mollie out of her sling around noon – she was tired and I could tell she wanted to lay down. We had about 7 people here at the time so we could have gotten her back in the sling. She did go down and she took a nap. However, after her nap, SHE GOT UP ON HER OWN!!!!! The bad news – there appears to be an ulcer in her right eye. The vet is on the way out. Please keep the prayers coming for this sweet girl – she’s got a long road of recovery ahead of her. Not even 2 years old and look at that body – there isn’t much. Thank you all for caring!

An ASE certified diesel mechanic stopped by to check out the pickup truck. It isn’t good news – catastrophic engine failure due to a broken connecting rod. We need to replace the engine – it’s a PowerStroke 7.3 liter turbo-diesel F350. There is a large amount of internal foreign damage to the engine.

I’m heartsick. The truck is our lifeline to get hay, respond to calls like Mollie’s, to take a horse to the hospital, etc. We’re talking lots of money to fix it – I’m just in shock right now. In tears too. Why do things like this have to happen?

Sincerely,

Theresa

Good morning from Miss Mollie! It was a long night. She wants to get up but just doesn’t have the strength to master a full get up. She gets 1/2 way up and her backend goes down. The vet is coming around 11 to oil her again. We will have a group here then to get her up. Possibly into the sling. Her vitals are normal. She has good appetite. She is getting fluids for now. Staying hydrated is very important.

There are currently two candle groups set aside for this sweet girl so please light a candle and keep her in your prayers.

Group ‘Filly.’

Group ‘Bhfer.’

The Arabian in her – Mollie has spunk. She’s adorable. She is just a baby and deserves a chance. She’s down for the night but she is able to roll up sternum on her own now. We’ll get her up again tomorrow when we have enough help if she isn’t up on her own by then. We will have her blood work results back tomorrow and hopefully her organs are ok. We thank all of you so much your encouragement and support. Mollie is on her road to recovery. What path she takes, well, we do all we can and we let go and let God. If he has plans for her at least she will have known love and proper care while with us. She knows she matters. And we won’t let her suffer. If she takes a turn for the worse and becomes uncomfortable, and our care team can’t manage it, we will help her to humanely cross. But let’s stay positive. It takes a village – and I believe…

I’m very happy to report that Betsy Rose is doing well! No more choke issues. She is simply the cutest little mare I’ve ever met. It’s a true blessing to have her here with us!  You can’t help but to feel a strong, positive, inquisitive, and caring energy when around her.

Betsy Rose told Mollie to not give up!

Regarding Mollie – it was a long night last night. The rain just wouldn’t let up. Well, it would and when we thought it was over, it would rain again. Just a light mist sometimes, but enough that we had to put sandbags around Mollie to keep the rain from running on her. We’d roll her over and help her to go sternum. She’d eat a little, sleep some, and wake up renewed and thrash to get up. It’s so hard to see them when they are like that. Her left eye was swollen by daylight and she had made a couple of “bed sores” worse. She had a sheet under her head, but when she thrashes, the sheet gets moved and there is just no stopping her – it can be dangerous for humans trying to help her. One clip of a hoof can cause injury if you’re within kicking range. She’d toss her head back and if you’re within range that can hurt too – I’m wearing a good size bruise on my leg to prove it. LOL

The vet oiled Mollie again this am. She was pretty tired and didn’t need to be sedated which was good because our plans were to get her up and into the sling after the vet left. Her blood work indicates that her organs appear to be ok but she has a lot of low values that we will be working on. She got more fluids today with some vitamins, B12, etc. After passing poop with sand in it, she is now passing oil.

Mollie’s gut was full of sand.

Mollie took a good rest after the vet left. And then, with the help of many, we encouraged her to stand. We were surprised by a neighbor that brought muffins, biscuits, and coffee for breakfast. It was such a nice thing – totally unexpected.

Mollie is weak but strong in her heart.

We introduced the sling to Mollie and distracted her a little while we got her all hooked up and secured. We walked her just a bit – her back end is starting to come to life.  She has very little muscle.

Mollie got groomed and loved on and her sores were treated.  Like Betsy Rose, she is another “makes you feel really good” little girl. When I think about how she has lived, and almost died, it makes me so sad.

We know about Mollie but, sadly, there are many that we will never know about. But thanks to all of you and your support, like Betsy Rose, Mollie has a chance.  I think she’s going to give it her all and pull through this. I can’t thank everyone enough who came out to help today – it was a true blessing. Bob and I are both beat – I can’t imagine how we would have managed without the extra help.

Mollie is happy to be on her feet.

Mollie was so happy to be up. The Arabian in her just shines! I adore Arabians – I love all breeds but Arabians have my heart. The connection I feel with them is something I can’t explain – it’s very strong and uncomplicated. They speak so loudly without saying a word. It is one of the most wonderful things you could experience, IMO. My mare, Beauty, is an Arabian and it’s because of her that Beauty’s Haven came to be.

Mollie could stand, with assistance.

Mollie is drinking on her own – she likes Horse Quencher in her water. She is passing oil. She has a wonderful appetite – we pretty much use the UC Davis guidelines for a refeeding program, adjusting as necessary. But everything is slow and steady. Her eye is better this evening, but still a bit swollen.

Mollie’s eye is still swollen.

Another surprise – Diane brought us a hot dinner and took care of Mollie this evening so we could sit and enjoy it! She doted on Mollie too – it’s just a natural thing to do.

Mollie getting pampered by Diane.

So proud of this little filly! Thank goodness she’s a believer!  God bless – have a wonderful night everyone!

Mollie believes!

Sincerely,
Theresa

Theresa went to a farm near Chiefland, Florida this morning to respond to a call that came late last night.  A little Arabian yearling filly had been down since yesterday evening. Her pasture mate, a colt, was rescued by another organization but the filly was left behind as she was down and too weak to stand. A neighbor said the filly was laying in the road after the colt was taken away and he dragged her into the driveway for the night.  Since Chiefland is more than an hour away from Beauty’s Haven, and Betsy Rose was suffering from choke, Theresa had to wait until morning to make the trip. Needless to say, Theresa spent a sleepless night worrying about the little filly.

Theresa checked the filly immediately upon arrival. She is in very bad condition but Theresa believes that there is hope.  She named the filly Mollie.
Mollie

It didn’t take long before Theresa and Kylie had Mollie loaded – time was of the essence.  When they arrived back at Beauty’s Haven, the vet was there waiting.

Mollie was gently pulled out of the trailer.  There wasn’t much life left in her but we don’t give up easily.  Fluids were ran and Mollie was oiled.

The vet had a hard time tubing Mollie because of mud and sand she had ingested.  The poor girl was in bad shape.

Once the fluids got to working we were able to get her sternum.  She’d been down for over 24 hours.

Mollie has light in her eyes – she is trying.

After giving Mollie some time to regroup after receiving fluids, with help from others, they were able to get Mollie up for a short walk to the quarantine paddock. She needs prayers and good thoughts – she’s not out of the woods by far.

Theresa says you can definitely tell that Mollie is an Arabian!  Her spirit is strong even though her body is broken.  Assistance from friends in the community was very much appreciated!

Mollie is down for the night but is now able to go sternum on her own. Someone will be with her through the night and she will be rolled over every couple of hours.  She needs prayers and good thoughts – she’s not out of the woods by far.

Sincerely,
Jeanne

A quick update on Cookie. Teri (foster mom) stopped by last week to discuss Cookie. Teri felt Cookie had been a bit sad. I went to visit Divinity and Cookie a few weeks ago and Teri said Cookie perked up and was upbeat for a few days. But then she went back to standing in the corner watching the driveway as if waiting for someone to come for her. When Teri told me that it broke my heart. We have been looking for a safe place for Genesis – he has been doing well but the others have been picking on him. He’s a gentle giant that lost an eye this past year to glaucoma. He is at risk for losing the other over the next 5 years according to the vet’s at UF. The idea of swapping Cookie and Genesis came to us at the same time! Divinity is doing well but she likes having another horse around. Yesterday, Teri brought Cookie back and picked Genesis up. Cookie was whinnying coming in the driveway – she was excited to be back! Genesis got hugs, loaded right up, settled in at Teri’s, and had a good night. Genesis and Divinity each have their own stall, turnout paddocks, humans that are home almost 24/7, grass, and they gets lots of TLC. We truly appreciate Selby and Teri for taking such good care of the horses! And they are only a few miles away! Cookie stays in the barn during sunny days with Ruby – they have been friends for a long time.

Cookie returning – there’s Ruby greeting her out the barn window!

Genesis – a gentle giant!

Genesis going home with Teri Barrach. He’s such a huge teddy bear – we miss him already!

He’s only about 10 miles away so our volunteers/friends can visit with him!

Sincerely,

Theresa

Jamie Bell and Marie Riordan set up a booth for us at the Berrittini Horsey Tack sale yesterday and raised $600+ much needed dollars! Many thanks to everyone that donated for the sale and helped in any way! We will be setting up another booth at the Tack Shack Yard Sale in December – if anyone has any good used tack they would like to donate please contact Jamie!

Two very sweet visitors we gave shelter and food to last night. They were running down and we were afraid they would get hit. Hunting dogs often end up lost and/or homeless around here. Jamie called the number on their collar and the owner came and got them this am.

Aaleyah Belle was very happy to see Tim and Shelbie Bible today!

Barbara taking a walk with Betsy Rose today. Betsy tends to be too stationary sometimes and walking is good for her. It was a beautiful day!

Sisco after a bath today. Sisco is a very sweet boy that is looking for a forever home.

Bronson kicking up his heels. He’s feeling better!

We currently have two ongoing fundraisers to assist with Baby Ray’s vet bills: one is a bracelet made from Baby Ray’s tail hair and another bracelet made from Betsy Rose’s tail hair! For each $5 donation made, you will be entered for a chance to win one of these bracelets that will be created by Lisa Austin of Crazy4PonyTails. But you must specify when you make your donation, which bracelet you are donating towards – Ray’s or Betsy’s (or both).

Once we have raised/received $500 in donations for Ray’s bracelet, a name will be drawn! Once we have raised/received a separate $500 in donations for Betsy Rose’s bracelet, a name will be drawn!

Donations can be made via our PayPal address: theresa or via our website donate page at: https://www.bhfer.org/oldsite/donate.cfm. Other examples of Lisa’s work may be found at: http://www.crazy4ponytails.com/.

Baby Ray continues to improve! Dr. Stephens said they are "mystified" by his recovery. They will do another ultrasound tomorrow but if all goes well he should be released on Wednesday. Please keep the prayers coming – they work!

Sincerely,
Theresa

Baby Ray was a bit better today but he is far from out of the woods. They still don’t know what caused his illness. They discontinued IV fluids and he is drinking on his own – he also passed poop! His condition is still guarded. Please continue to pray for him.

Theresa
