Solace’s blood work from yesterday showed continued improvement! He’s quite the character and it’s really amazing to see him run to the barn at feed time! You can tell what time of the day is because Little E and Solace are right there to remind you!
I took inventory of our medical supplies and we need to order some things – if anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated. I hate to keep asking for help but we operate totally from donations and can’t do this without help from the public. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit all volunteer organization – we are not funded by the local, State, or Federal government.
Solace is still on SMZ’s and Sulcrafate and needs sponsors for another container of each.
· A container of SMZ’s is $49.44 (this one we have about 10 days worth left)
· A container of Sulcrafate is $189.11 (he needs this one urgently – we only have a few days worth left)
Would anyone like to sponsor either any of this? If you would like to help donations can be called directly into the vet’s office at 352-237-6151. Just please advise when you call in what the donation is for.
We also need help purchasing Banamine and a few other items for the supply cabinet that we keep on hand. Also needed are double Velcro latching horse size fly masks. Of course there is always hay – we need to make another hay run tomorrow for 2 of the large 700 lb compressed bales – they are about $125 each. Donations can be called into Larson’s for help with hay at 352-867-8333.
Ruby, Peggy Sue, Rosita, Lacey, and a couple of others will be having a hooficure this week – would anyone like to sponsor a hooficure? Donations can be made via PayPal – our address is theresa@beautysequinerescue.org or via our website at www.bhfer. No amount is too small. God bless and thank you all for your continued support!
Rayo and Silver Belle – beautiful!
Sincerely,
Theresa

A couple of the horses got a much needed bath this weekend and most got a good grooming. The mini mares got off the hook for being clipped – there just was not enough time and they are going to be a project.
If only the weather would be this perfect all year and the horses would stay this clean…
Roxy adores Peggy Sue – and the feeling is mutual.
Solace is still doing well and he adores his food!
Sisco eating hay out the back of the truck. He is doing well too.
Bouie and Frodo – our little fuzzy bears. They are also in the waiting line to be clipped.
Morgan LaFaye – she’s looking for a home. She’s a very sweet girl. I apologize that the picture is fuzzy – I took it with my phone.
Hollie is also very sweet. She has not adjusted well to the Florida environment and is having trouble breathing – the blowing dust from the lime rock road is not good for her and we have very little shade. She will be leaving soon for her new home where she will be more comfortable. We will miss her but her new mom will keep us updated.
Sunset also has labored breathing. She needs to find a home that is better suited for her and the sooner the better – before warmer temperatures arrive. Like with Hollie, the dust that blows off the lime rock road is not good for her and she needs shade. I’m so glad she was clipped last weekend.
Some of you may remember Archer – he is doing great and his family adores him! That’s his best friend on the right.
It was a really busy weekend here. A lot got done – a big “thank you” to everyone that took time out of their busy schedule to come out and help. The more hands we have to get daily chores done the better – it leaves time for other things like baths, clipping, raking, cleaning up the barn, etc. It really takes a lot of time, money, and hands on to keep this place going. We are very blessed to have the support we have – here and from afar. It’s only because of other people pulling together to help us that we are successful – be it donations, prayers, sharing our info with others, etc. Without all of you helping us we couldn’t do what we do – we sincerely thank you.
And many thanks to Marie for making and donating the necklaces that helped us to raise the funds to pay for Solace’s blood transfusion – that is a lot of worry off my mind. And it is only part of the vet bill. We still have a jewelry auction going on to help with other vet needs. And we need to buy hay again. Some of the horses are getting a hooficure this week – if anyone would like to sponsor a horse please let me know.
I’m calling it a day. God bless and again, thank you all, very much for your continued support. Have a wonderful week!

Solace the evening (Jan 9th) of the blood transfusion and Solace (Feb 5th) less than a month later. Thank you all for caring about him! We need to raise this $750 – can you help? PayPal address: bhfer@earthlink.net.

Remember the beautiful paint gelding I posted a picture of last Thursday? I promised I’d share more information on him but I wanted to get through first. Sisco is a 20ish year old gelding that went through a local auction many years ago. He injured his head in the trailer on the way to the auction and it should have had stitches but it went untreated. He went through the auction with blood running down his face as a “no sale”. He has scar tissue from the injury between his eyes which you can see in the picture below. After the auction was over he was bought a lady named Linda and she owned him for many years. Linda says he was a wonderful trail horse that was a pleasure to ride.
We all know what the economy has been like. In early January Linda asked for help from others in placing her 3 horses – she could no longer afford to care for them. She found a home for 2 but Sisco still needed a place to go by the end of the month or he would be put down. Finding a home for Sisco would be tough because he does have an issue – about a year ago a tumor was removed from under his tail but it grew back. A mutual friend, Stacy, raised money for a vet go out to remove the tumor a couple of weeks ago and a biopsy was done. Sisco came here and a few days later the biopsy came back – it was squamous cell carcinoma. I did research and found an article that Dawn (Horse and Man) had published in December 2010 ( http://horseandman.com/medical/cisplatin-beads-to-cure-squamous-cell-carcinoma-in-horses-a-happy-ending-for-aponi/ ). The picture in the article looked like Sisco’s tumor site (after it was removed) and it was about the same size. I spoke with Dr. Porter about Sisco and yesterday he came out and assessed the situation and felt Sisco would have a 50/50 chance if treated with cisplatin. Other than this issue Sisco is a happy and healthy horse with a positive attitude.
Here is what Dr. Porter started with. A lump under the skin next to the area that had been cut off last week was found but Dr. Porter thinks it may be scar tissue from when the tumor was cut off last year.
Once Sisco was down Dr. Porter was able to inject the drug where it needed to be.
In addition to the injections we will start applying a topical chemotherapy cream to the area on Friday. Dr. Porter wants to assess it again in 6 weeks. He feels another treatment may be necessary but only time will tell. He has treated other horses in this manner with success. So, Sisco is doing well and has some healing to do. Knowing where we are now, and how we intend to proceed, we need to ask for help with Sisco’s treatment and care expenses. He’s an otherwise healthy horse and you’d never guess his age – he’s bright and friendly. We’d like to ask for prayers for Sisco. And if anyone would like to help with his expenses it would be greatly appreciated. Donations are tax deductible and no amount is too small. Our PayPal address is theresa@beautysequinerescue.org and a link to our “Donate” page is https://www.bhfer.org/oldsite/donate.html.
God bless and thank you all for your continued support! Oh – Sisco will have his own Facebook page by tomorrow where updates will also be posted.
Sincerely,
Theresa

Just a few pictures from today…
Solace visiting with Jessie today. Jessie and her husband, Ron, are visiting from NJ. Solace is now munching on hay in his stall with his blanket on. It’s going to get cold tonight. We continue to pray that he continues to improve. Sometimes the effects of starvation and neglect are not known until long after recovery has begun.
Ruby getting her share of carrots.
This is Rosita with Andrew – a new volunteer that is a student at UF!

Wanda and her daughter, Martina, came out and clipped Sunset today – what a job that was! It took hours and I can’t thank them enough!
This is Roxy with Sunset. Sunset’s PMU stall number is branded on her hip. I don’t know how many babies she’s had but I bet it’s been quite a few.
And voila! Sunset feels so much better! She usually stands next to a big water tank and snorkels much of the day. But after her spa time she walked around and grazed and seemed to carry herself in a manner that said she was very happy with her new look – she is much more comfortable. She’s put on all the weight she needs to – she could use some muscling up but that may take awhile. She will be going to her new home in a couple of weeks.
I wandered out for a bit today and it felt good! I’m getting better slowly – baby steps. It’s not easy but it is what it is and I don’t want to go backwards. Thanks to everyone that came out and helped – it was a surprise to see so many volunteers here! And Kathy came to visit – it was a beautiful day! How beautiful? Just look at the smile on Rayo’s face!

Theresa
