January 18th:

We had lots of visitors yesterday! This was CJ with his new family getting ready to leave.

Nokkie and CJ last evening. They are BFF already! CJ is a precious soul that has not always been in good hands. He can be a bit shy of strangers. But with Elizabeth and Bri, well, since the day they came out to meet him, it was like he’d known them forever. We had his feet done today so they could experience how to best handle him because of his knee. He’s polite and there isn’t a mean bone in his body. He just gets tense when you ask him to pick up and bend the bad knee, like he’s expecting pain. But we are careful and have learned how to get it done. It meant a lot to me that Elizabeth and Bri made time to come while the farrier was here to be part of it – it takes at least 3 people. Congrats everyone involved!

January 19th:

Some of our fuzzy babies this morning after breakfast.

This is Mary – a very, very sweet 27 yr young Arabian mare. We thought we had a home for her but it fell through. Would anyone like to adopt this beautiful girl? If so, please PM me. Serious inquiries only please.

Not a great picture but Mollie is doing great. When she sheds out, she is going to be stunning!

“Pistol! Now look what you’ve done! You’ve stirred up so much fuss Cookie opened her window to see what’s going on! Now stop – let’s go play with the other boys!" Pistol is enjoying his new "freedom" and friends his size!

Santana is such an awesome horse. I bent down today to sit and watch the boys play. Next thing I knew, there was a horse hanging out over my shoulder.

Matilda is always so photogenic!

Katherine DiSandro and her family took Betsy Rose out for a walk today down to the far end of the property and Betsy Rose LOVED the field trip! Look at her backside filling in! She is a bit stiff again and seemed a little uncomfortable today. We’d like to have Dr. Julia out to work on her again this week. Would anyone like to help make that happen?

Betsy Rose has come such a long way but is still fragile. Before coming to us her body had fed upon itself until there simply wasn’t anything left to give – her recovery still leaves me in awe. Those first few days/nights on the ground and in and out of the sling were very difficult on all of us. Once she was able to stay in the sling for longer periods of time, it helped us all. That sling was her lifeline for months. I didn’t want to let her out of my sight. I’ll never forget that 2 month mark when she walked on her own and grazed for the first time! Freckles still watches over her but we can’t let Freckles out too much because the dogs will hijack her. We’re so proud of Betsy Rose – she’s the little mare that believed with all her heart and soul that she could overcome all odds – and she did. Her case goes to court again this Tuesday.

There’s no place like home. That’s Betsy Rose on the left with Mollie on the right – she followed her down the entire fenceline.

Baby Ray made new human friends today. He’s doing well!

Good night everyone! I have to call it a day soon. There is much going on tomorrow. I’m still trying to get rid of whatever has had me down but I am better. Thank you all for your continued support and for caring!

Sincerely,

Theresa

I looked out the window yesterday morning to find CaryLou trying to unbuckle Santana’s blanket. It was so funny! Santana is so very patient. So now CaryLou has moved on to the back leg strap. LOL! These guys are so entertaining! Now Wally is joining in! A mini at each back leg pulling on the leg straps to his blanket!

Amy went to her new home yesterday – she will be a friend to another paint mini – a little gelding that is her same age!

Amy is very happy in her new home with her new friend!

Bella at her foster home – she’s doing very well! There’s no lime rock dust where she is now.

Remember Mystical? She is SO loved by her human family. She is doing great!

Mini long ears!

Look at those LONG ears! Matilda is so SWEET!

Betsy Rose today – look at her beautiful mane!

Victoria is so sweet and is looking great! Some rye grass has come up and it looks so nice! The paddocks were dragged yesterday and they look so nice!

CJ still needs a quiet home where he can just be a pasture pal.

Cookie got a hooficure today too. We’re going to have x-rays done of her front feet. She has had a lameness issue in the front right. Her left eye where the cancer was removed is still under observation and will be checked again soon by the vet.

Santana’s shoes were pulled and he got a hooficure today. Santana has navicular and had shoes when he came to rescue last month. Laura trimmed him and applied hoof wraps and support under the frog. Kim is holding Santana in the photo for Laura to work on him. When they turned Santana back out he felt better – he did what we all the "cricket dance" and took off! He is one of the sweetest horses you could hope to meet.

Sylvia serving Morgan breakfast! Morgan has a family coming to meet her in a few days.

Beauty is the foundation of Beauty’s Haven. It’s because of her that Beauty’s Haven came to be. She is my heart horse.

Sue and her sister, June, visited with Ruby in the horrible weather today. The little Boston’s are Popper and Trixie! Trixie is a rescue. She came to us with Stage 4 heartworms and congestive heart failure a year ago and is now doing well.

Bonnie getting a little help from the peanut gallery. LOL

Kitty Cat

Oreo (a rescue) was all curled up and napping in the feed room. He still doesn’t seem to be feeling great but the vet says nothing is wrong.

Classy with Indy and Donovan in the background.

Gentleman and June. We had to rush to get horses brushed and blankets on this evening after the horses dried from the morning showers – but before another round of rain came through. Solace is tucked into a stall. He didn’t seem to feel well today and wanted to stay in. So, he’s next door to Bronson tonight. Bronson is tucked in next to Betsy Rose.

CJ is still looking for a home where he can be a pasture pal to one or two horses. He has a bum left front knee. Here, when other horses get to running, CJ wants to run too which isn’t good for him. He needs a much quieter home situation.

Sincerely,
Theresa

"Raggedy Ann you look a little different! Is that a new outfit?"
"On no – I’m not Raggedy Ann, I’m Raggedy Jan – another one of her twin sisters! Surprise and Happy New Year! She has told us all about you and invited us to come! I brought my BFF, Little Brown Bear, too! Want to meet him?"

"Betsy Rose, meet Little Brown Bear! I call him Bear for short. He is so brave and smart! He helped save Moo Cow when her owner was taking her to market and then he saved Quackey Duck from being shot! Freckles gave us a warm welcome this morning before you woke up – she adores you just like a lot of humans do!"

"Thank you Freckles for welcoming our new friends! Why don’t you invite everyone else out to join us before the rains get here?"

Freckles introduced everyone and then they all started to share stories of their life adventures.

Betsy Rose, in her normal tradition, closed her eyes and seemed to say a little prayer of thanks. She is loved, so very much, by so very many, and she knows it! God granted us a miracle with her – she is a true blessing. We will continue to try to make all of her tomorrow’s everything her past should have been. Thank you all for caring about this little mare that BELIEVES!

"Do you all know that 2014 is "The Year of the Horse?" Mommy Theresa says some humans are working hard to ban horse slaughter, to change laws that would protect animals from starvation, abuse, neglect and abandonment. And to not only have laws put in place to protect us but to have them enforced! Yes, it’s going to be a wonderful year! Thank you all for caring about us!"

Happy New Year, Everyone!

I actually took out some time out to ride with Katie (our daughter) on Monday. It was a little chilly but it was nice, very nice.

Mollie – she’s looking good and has a bit more energy each day.

Check out HighTower – a really nice TB (he’s more like a QH stuck in a TB body!) that is available for adoption!

Rose getting her morning scratches. Yes, she has a blanket for almost every day of the week (not really but she does have a thin one, a medium weight one, and a heavy weight one).

Santana is a love. Seriously. He is like a horse magnet. That’s Bronson napping – why he would pick this spot to nap I have no idea. There were acres of grass and sand spots available – silly boy! And that’s Harvey standing with his head between the barn and water tub – that seems to be his favorite napping spot. CaryLou and Wally are behind Santana. And that’s little Lily off to the right. Ebony was standing next to me when I was taking the photo.

Matilda is so sweet. She’s put on about 175 lbs and is doing great. She sings beautifully!

Princess is feeling much better.

This is Duke – a GSD that is my shadow and guardian. Bob says that Duke "lives to protect me". I’ve never had a dog as attentive to me as Duke is – he’s just amazing and I love him dearly.

Cindy and her son, David, came to meet Garan and Ceri today and it was wonderful! They all clicked! Cindy got teary eyed, I got teary eyed, it was just "right."

The horses loved the attention today. If all goes well they will be in their new home just in time for Christmas! This is so bittersweet. But they deserve their own home – their own human. Cindy is experienced with Arabians – I’m so excited for everyone!

It’s truly been a blessing to have been able to help these two loving and beautiful horses and to be part of their life. Each one that comes into my life captures part of my heart. I prayed, so hard, that they would be able to stay together. I held on and believed. And so it is – God is good!

And lastly, we have hay! Two tons and one round roll to a total of $1090. We will need to order again in about a week. Thank you all for your support!

Sincerely,

Theresa

A lady contacted us months ago about a gelding she wanted to rehome. We were full at the time and after some discussion, she decided to try to keep him. She would cut corners and try to find a way. Well, she contacted us again and said her situation had become worse – the horse needed basic care that she could just provide. We just couldn’t say no. God does open doors – Ceri and Garan will be leaving for their new home in a few days. Amy will be going to her new home right after Christmas. So, meet Magnum, a beautiful Andalusian cross gelding.

Magnum needs some rehab – he’s a bit underweight, his teeth need to be done, his feet need to be trimmed, etc. He has many sores that we are treating on the sides of his face, on his legs, back, and especially under his stomach. It’s hard to see them because of his coat but the really big one under his tummy is very visible – it’s like one long 14” L x 6” W open sore. We are very thankful that the owner didn’t wait until he was near the condition that Betsy Rose was in to reach out for help. This is Magnum’s friend, Pistol. He’s an almost 2 year old mini donkey that is adorable. He’s still intact but we’ll be fixing that soon.

Pistol is very vocal – when he sings, Matilda sings along with him. It’s adorable! Merry Christmas Magnum and Pistol! Welcome to Beauty’s Haven!

Would anyone like to help with either of them? Magnum has been vetted and blood work has been done. A onetime, or recurrent monthly donation, of any amount would be appreciated. Our PayPal is theresa. Other ways to donate can be found on the "Donate" page of our website at https://www.bhfer.org/oldsite/donate.cfm. Thank you.

I took Betsy Rose for a hand walk stroll around the main paddock yesterday morning – she really enjoyed it! Yes, she was brushed/groomed before our adventure but the weather is nuts. Winter coats grow overnight and then try to shed out the next day.

Betsy Rose – she defied all odds. We love her to no end!

Santana and Bronson went out to play in the main paddock, too. Santana has pretty much claimed Bronson as his herd – he won’t let him out of his reach.

Saturday 22nd:

Marie Riordan arranged a get together today for our awesome volunteers – thank you Marie!

"Betsy Rose the good thing about living at the barn is that we get more treats when the humans get together! Did you see the cake? Pam made it and you are on it! I mean, a likeness of you was on it. And I saw a big bag of carrots go by too!" Betsy Rose replied “I’m going to go check it out Cookie. No worries – if there are treats we’ll get some!"

Merry Christmas everyone! This is the cake that Pam Zarem made for today’s get together! Yes, that’s Betsy Rose!

Whoever knew that Betsy Rose and Santa are really great friends? They go way back according to Betsy Rose!

Dr. Julia Simonson stopped by to check on Mollie, Betsy Rose, and Magnum, and to just visit for awhile. She flushed out Donovan’s tear ducts. Oh, she did hop on him for a bit – he’s always a good boy.

Susan Moon and Kim Foster and her daughters gave Victoria a bath today. She’s doing very well also.

Bob and I both got to sit for a few minutes today. I felt something tickling my ear and found Betsy Rose napping behind me. We truly appreciate everyone who came out today – and to those who couldn’t make it – we missed you and you were in our thoughts! It certainly doesn’t feel like winter here – the temps are near 80 degrees. Tomorrow is supposed to be even warmer. Some good news – we are actually seeing some of the grass seed that was spread coming up!

Magnum got his much needed hooficure today. It took awhile but he was a good boy. His blood work came back and the results are pretty much what we see in most malnourishment cases – there are a lot of low values. It will just take some time but he will come around.

Donovan, Matilda, and Mollie. No words are needed – the photo says it all.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Sincerely,

Theresa

Betsy Rose sporting her tangled mane today.

Betsy Rose rules the barn. She’s so special!

Mollie sporting her new blanket. She got to go out in the main paddock today with the big horses!

The boys felt a bit frisky after all the rain. They ran and played and rolled and were a mess!

Santana – he’s a very, very sweet boy. Santana is still looking for help with his monthly expenses. Would anyone like to help sponsor him?

Some of our "old ones" today – everyone was filthy from rolling after the rains cleared this morning. GMan, E, Matilda, Solace.

The rains Saturday night were torrential. Lower paddocks are flooded with standing water. The precious grass seed spread over all of the property for winter rye is gone. The erosion is horrible – there are new holes and trenches that the horses can get hurt in. This is so depressing. We need help with the erosion issues – any ideas anyone? We got so much rain it almost filled up a poop bucket.

This washout at the perimeter fence line left us vulnerable to unauthorized critters. In the last photo you can see what the county has done over the years. The road is now a good 16" above our paddock. They put lime rock down every so often and then grade it and when they do it pushes the lime rock against our fence. All of the water from the road runs into our paddock. It needs to run somewhere and I guess I wouldn’t mind the water only – but the rocks it brings with it are horrible.

An open invitation for coyotes, etc.

When they grade the road they push the lime rock against the sides of the road and it has accumulated against our fence line. People can stand in the road and reach right over to pet and feed the horses. This is unacceptable.

Good grazing land was lost – covered by lime rock that contains lots of rocks that cause stone bruises. Please pray for a solution. We are meeting with the county in the morning.

A little video of Cerinade – she is a beautiful and sweet girl that needs a forever home. But she is a mare – lol! Garan (also looking for a home) is her same age – they make a beautiful set of bookends. Ceri is totally dirty in the clip – it was taken this am after a long night of heavy rains. Of course, all of the horses had to roll and roll.

We are trying to raise funds to purchase hay this week – please consider making a donation to help. We are an all volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit equine rescue organization that operates totally off of donations from the public – we are not funded by County, State, or Federal funds. Please consider making a one time or automatic monthly donation to help us to help the horses. There are various ways to donate – visit our "Donate" page on our website. Our mailing address is PO Box 53, Morriston, FL 32668. Our PayPal address is theresa@beautysequinerescue.org. All donations are tax deductible and no amount is too small. Please share us with friends, family, and co-workers – it takes a village!

Have a great week, everyone!

Magic getting some apple today. Thank you Kathy Breakall, and your family, for coming to visit today – and for the horse treats!

Betsy Rose just loves it when we have visitors!

Mollie is doing better. Her temp is normal. Her heart rate has remained higher than normal but this is not uncommon with horses that have been starved to the point she had been. It will get better as she gets better – she’s slowly but surely building much needed muscle. She’s a sweet girl – she’s very lucky to be alive.

It sure looks like Mollie is smiling, doesn’t it? She loves scratches. She has us trained.

Mollie (3 to 4 yrs old) is not much bigger than baby Bronson.

CaryLou – he still "struts"!

Our precious little Lily.

And then there is Matilda – such a sweet girl. Love the long ears!

This is Little E. He’s a 30+ year old Arabian that was struck by lightening years ago. He’s an "Old One" that we just adore.

Sincerely,

Theresa
