Another busy week and it’s already Thursday! The heat has been absolutely horrible! The sprinklers, misters and fans are constantly running. Warrior has allergies and does not sweat, so he is much more comfortable in the feed room with the AC. He oftentimes ‘asks’ us to join him and appears to be ever so grateful when we do so. Frodo, who also doesn’t sweat, prefers to remain in a stall with a swamp cooler during the day. Aaleyah Belle, Mo, and Walker can oftentimes, be found cooling down in the shade while Shadow and Benjamin come to life a bit more once the evening starts to cool down.

We have had some wonderful help during the week. Vickie spent the day washing thirty plus feed tubs with a great deal of help from Danni, who somehow, managed to get a nasty wound on the heel of his front foot, but thankfully, it is healing.

We did take time to celebrate the birthday of Kathy, a dear friend and supporter, as well as enjoy a visit by Abigail, who so enjoyed her time pampering Magic, who has truly come so far. We are so very proud of him.

Lastly, and thankfully, our two precious kittens have found a wonderful, loving home!

Sincerely,
Theresa

Match Game Update

We only have a couple of weeks remaining to meet the deadline for our Match Game! Once we receive $6K in donations, the funds will be matched and morph into $12K. We still have $3513 to go. Please share this out – we can do this, but only with your help. You can contribute via the ‘DONATE’ button or via our Facebook fundraiser by clicking on the thermometer image. Thank you, all, for your love and support.

Last Wednesday, when the vet came out to help Chloe transition to Rainbow Bridge, we had him examine Warrior, our twenty-five-year-old Falabella mini. I was concerned because Warrior hadn’t been feeling well. Although his vitals were normal, there was a bit of crackling in his lungs which may have been due to his allergies which oftentimes, worsen this time of year. Bloodwork was performed and he was started on antibiotics while his supplements were modified. We also scheduled Dr. Bess, our Equine Dentist, to come out on Friday. Her dental examination revealed that Warrior did have a few sharp teeth which were immediately addressed and our ‘Little Man’ is now, thankfully, a bit more perky and is eating more.

On Friday, Dr. Mangan also came out to check Warrior’s eyes. Warrior appreciated it very much and gave Dr. Mangan a special ‘thank you’ which you can see in the video.

Warrior had been staying around the barn with Frodo and Bouie for a few days so I could keep a closer eye on him, but since he was now feeling better, we let him go back to his paddock where he continues to do well.

Sincerely,
Theresa

Warrior, one of our precious little minis, was not feeling well yesterday morning and refused to eat his meal. We immediately called the vet who came out and pulled some blood. Warrior’s vitals were all normal and he did have a bowel movement.

Last evening, however, Warrior appeared to be just fine but he seemed to strain when he had to urinate. We thought perhaps he might have a urinary tract issue, but since he hadn’t had another bowel movement, we wondered whether it may be colic. The vet did not believe this to be the case.

Warrior had three bowel movements during the night and urinated at least four times, and he certainly looks like he feels much better today. The change of weather with high temperatures coupled with allergies can be quite tough on some of the horses.

We will be keeping Warrior on Ulcer Guard for two weeks and I have added this product to both our Chewy and Amazon Wish Lists in case anyone would like to gift him a tube. While I don’t have the vet bill as yet and we may still need to run additional tests, any donations toward such would be so greatly appreciated. Just go to our Donate page where you can contribute in a variety of ways.

Please keep Warrior in your prayers. He’s such a precious soul.

Thank you!

Sincerely,
Theresa

I am reaching out to you on behalf of Theresa who has been dealing with sick horses for the past few days. On top of her routine daily chores, the necessity of keeping the sick horses isolated from the remainder of the herd has created quite a bit more work for Theresa.

Luiji, Warrior, Sassy, Peggy Sue and then, Dancer, started coughing over the weekend. By Saturday afternoon, some started running a fever and by yesterday, they all were feverish.

Thankfully, none of them have stopped eating. The vet was out yesterday morning to examine and do bloodwork on all of the sick members of our little herd, so, hopefully, we will have the results sometime today.

A few weeks ago, Jo was examined by the vet and bloodwork was done. Based on her behavior and symptoms, the vet advised that Jo was displaying symptoms of Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (dementia). Over the past several months, changes were noticed in both Jo’s personality and behavior. At times, Jo has appeared to be lost – she would just stand in one place and stare off into space, she has spooked a few times (which is new), and oftentimes, she takes a bite or two of a meal and then wanders off which is totally out of character for her. In addition, Jo has been fighting an eye ulceration which thankfully, after a few months of treatment, appears to have finally healed.

Jo’s blood test results were not great – there were some high and low values. She is anemic (a symptom of a larger health issue TBD) and her liver is a bit sluggish, both of which has greatly affected her immune system.

Anemia is caused by blood loss, blood destruction, or by the body not making enough red cells. Because she was walking away from her food at times, and she was due for her annual dental exam, her teeth were addressed last week but nothing of significance was apparent. She started running a fever a few days ago (it is currently normal) but there is now a foul odor emanating from her mouth which could indicate that there is something amiss in either her sinus passages or respiratory system. Theresa is making adjustments to Jo’s diet and supplements, and she will likely need additional diagnostics.

Days such as these are the reason why Theresa doesn’t post on social media as much as she would like to as she, Bob and our wonderful team of volunteers are literally caring for horses around the clock.

By the time the horses are all tucked in at night, there is little time for sleep before the next morning arrives. Volunteers help on most days until mid-afternoon and they make a tremendous difference. We are so truly grateful for them – they are such a blessing and we couldn’t do what we do without them!

Sadly, we must once again ask for assistance due to the additional and unexpected vet expenses, medications and supplements created by this current crisis.

Yesterday, Warrior sadly had a bout of colic which worried us greatly. The vet was immediately called out and Warrior was tubed and oiled. Thankfully, he did have one bowel movement soon thereafter. Blood tests were done but he just was not feeling great. Early this morning, however, we discovered three piles of poop! I’m still anxious to get the blood work results back and will update you all as soon as I can.

The four mini’s that we recently returned to the rescue, Haley, Kami, Ouija, and Warrior, all got their dentals recently done by Dr. Bess Darrow of Tune-Ups.  And we have some really great news – Kami and Haley may have an approved home!

Mini’s in the mist!  The mist really feels great in the Florida heat.  JoJo is always ready to help me give out hay.

We are so proud of Magic! We recently had a wonderful, fun-filled visit with Macy and Kathy Breakall.

I actually took a few minutes to take a ride a few days ago and it was awesome!

We apologize that we haven’t been able to get many updates out – we’re very short on volunteers and providing daily care for the horses has to be a priority.  But we hope to get better at this soon!
