ELYZA ROSE GROWING STRONGER EACH DAY!

Elyza Rose Growing Stronger

Dr. Mangan came out a couple of days ago and checked Elyza Rose’s eyes. The injury to her right lower eye lid has healed. However, he believes the issue in her left eye is immune mediated keratitis (inflammation of the cornea). This is something that needs to be managed medically, for the rest of her life, to prevent blindness in that eye.

Dr. Bess Darrow (Tune Ups Equine Dentistry) did some much needed work on Elyza Rose’s teeth a couple of weeks ago. Some teeth had sharp points which caused painful ulcerations in Elyza’s tongue and cheeks. This can cause a horse to lose weight as was the case with Betsy Rose when she came to us. It wasn’t even possible for Betsy to chew – her teeth had been neglected for quite some time and the way they had grown literally prevented her from chewing – just trying was painful! If a horse can’t chew, food isn’t broken down properly. A horse may appear to be eating, but if the food is not broken down properly, weight loss and even stomach ulcers can occur.

Elyza can now comfortably chew and graze. However, because of Elyza’s compromised condition, Dr. Bess didn’t want to sedate her in order to do all of the work that needs to be done. Dr. Bess will be back in the next couple of weeks to finish up.

Elyza was a very good patient and she really enjoys grazing as you can see in the video below – it’s what a horse is supposed to do and it’s important that they are able to do so pain free. If you’re a horse owner, please make sure to get an equine dentist or veterinarian to take care of your horse’s teeth at least annually. Senior horses may need to be done every 6 months. It can actually be a matter of life or death!

ELYZA ROSE SETTLES IN

Elyza-Rose Settles In

I am happy to report that Elyza Rose is settling in very well. I gave her a much needed bath this morning and clipped her later this afternoon. I just couldn’t stand seeing her long, thick, and unhealthy coat. She’s so good for the heart – I just can’t tell you how wonderful it feels to have her here. I feel like I’ve known her forever!

I believe that Elyza’s journey is a continuation of Betsy Rose’s journey. Betsy Rose’s presence here is very strong. Our Betsy Rose went to Rainbow Bridge on December 22nd. Elysa Rose came to us on February 22nd. The two months in between were dark and very depressing. My heart shattered with the loss of Betsy Rose and I didn’t know how I would ever put it back together again. I went through the motions each day but I was numb and lost. But yesterday, when I hugged Elyza Rose for the first time, I felt an overwhelming and much needed sense of peace. It lit a spark in me that was fueled by Betsy Rose. I just know it! I know that what Elyza endured before she came to us was terrible – we are committed to helping her heal. However, I think Elyza Rose found her way to us to lead me down a path where my heart would heal which is what Betsy Rose would want. I believe that Betsy Rose had her hoof (and heart) in this. I will always believe.

Elyza is about 16 years old and, like Betsy Rose, may have Cushing’s disease. We will have blood test results back tomorrow.

Elyza needs her eyes examined by Dr. Mangan – there’s something going on in her right eye which is the same eye that Betsy Rose had issue with.

Her teeth are a mess and I’m going to bet she puts on weight nicely once her teeth are taken care of by Dr. Bess.

She’s pretty thin (a 2 on the BCS) but she has a great appetite.

Elyza’s feet needed to be tended to and Stephanie trimmed them today.

When I hugged Elyza Rose for the first time, I felt an overwhelming and much needed sense of peace.

Maltilda’s Special Day

Dr. Julia Simonson worked on Matilda, an older Mammoth Mule, today. Matilda LOVED every minute of it! Matilda got chiropractic, acupuncture, electrical stimulation, and massage today.

After her session was finished, she did not want to move – she was so relaxed and looked so peaceful.

Dr. Julia and I were sitting on the bench at the front of the barn, talking, when Matilda finally did move. She turned around and looked as us and made the cutest little face as if to say “Thank you!”

January 11th

Dr. Julia checking Pistol today with help from Katherine and Elizabeth. He’s doing great. Yes, it took three people. LOL! He lives up to his name!

Bronson was gelded today and was a good patient.  Katherine and Elizabeth assisted Dr. Julia. Katherine wants to be a vet – she truly appreciates all the hands on experience she gets here. Experiences are so valuable, IMO. It’s an honor to have students like Katherine participate and volunteer! Elizabeth and her daughter, Bri, came out to meet CJ and helped out, too, while they were here. Paul and Roxy stayed busy with many other things that needed to be done. Thanks to everyone!

CJ has a home! Elizabeth and Bri spent some time grooming and handling him and they all just clicked! CJ is usually shy of new faces. But not today! He totally enjoyed the time they spent with him. He will be a pasture pal to one other horse they have. A pretty pasture ornament to love on and watch. I’m very happy for him!

January 12th

I lost my cell phone yesterday, but thankfully, found it today. I cannot believe that it survived the storms!

It was a busy day today and, unfortunately, I’m not feeling well – sore throat, congestion, earache, etc. I’m headed to bed very soon. Tomorrow is another busy day. Dr. Julia will be back to examine Solace and to review his blood work results. Bronson and Pistol are doing very well. Betsy Rose is moving better. Dr. Julia worked on her last week, she got a hooficure today, and tomorrow, Dr. Bess Darrow of Tune Ups Veterinary Equine Dentistry and Services will be here to check her and Solace and to do some others. Just wanted to say good night to everyone – I wish you all sweet dreams. We’ll have a new fundraiser starting tomorrow – we need help with these vet, farrier, and dental expenses.

January 15th

My day started out by spending some time with this grand old 34 year old mare – brushing her, giving her treats and hay, just talking to her. She was crippled and was no longer able to get around – she was tired. Dr. Tenant examined her yesterday and it was decided that the kindest, most humane and loving thing to do for the mare was to help her cross Rainbow Bridge. I stayed with her for awhile after she crossed. I bet there were many stories she could have shared. Run pain free, Chancey!

Dr. Bess Darrow of Tune Ups Veterinary Equine Dentistry and Services worked on a few of the horses yesterday. This is Santana. He was a good boy – he’s good about everything.

Aaleyah Belle got her teeth done too. She was on the list the last time Dr. Bess came but she didn’t want to behave. She was good yesterday though. It’s hard to believe she’s 5 years old now. Magnum was a good boy for Dr. Bess too. He’s a bit older than we thought. He’s a little shy with new people. I was very happy that Lindsey was able to come and help Dr. Bess yesterday. Thanks Lindsey!

Betsy Rose, Solace, Mo, & the Minis

July 24th – 25th, 2013

Solace has an infection that is believed to originate from a cracked tooth all the way in the back of his mouth.  The infection may have made its way to his sinus’.  He will be going to the hospital today – we’ll see what more x-rays show and go from there.

This is Solace the day he arrived back in December 2012. Imagine how thin he was without the unhealthy winter coat.

It seemed to take forever with Solace at the hospital today.  They did a dental exam, blood work, x-rays, and scoped him.  What they found is an almost perfect 3/8″ hole in the top of his mouth that goes into his sinus cavity.  We need to continue to monitor him as we have been and treating his symptoms.  He’s a good boy.  At least he didn’t have to have any teeth pulled.  Solace getting x-rays.

This is Betsy Rose introducing Freckles to Dr. Bess.  She’s very proud of her little friend! Dr. Bess wants to give Betsy a couple more weeks before sedating her to get to her horrible back teeth. Betsy Rose is gaining weight nicely.  She’s a captivating little mare that makes us all smile.  “Hi Dr. Bess! Freckles here – up here!!!  I hang out with Betsy Rose all of the time – were BFF!  She’s doing really good and everyone is so good to her – she’s loved!  She appreciates everyone and everything done for her.  She’s told me more than once that she’s more than thankful that she was given another chance – she loves life!”

Dr. Bess was totally in awe of the gifts that Betsy Rose has received! And she thinks Freckles is great!

Betsy Rose was a bit more lively today than she was the first time Dr. Bess met her.

Betsy Rose enjoyed her walk yesterday.  After grazing a bit, she wanted to nap.  So we let her.  She pretty much gets what she wants.  LOL  She is a tiny little girl that has a huge heart – she makes us all smile.  Betsy Rose is simply amazing and adorable!  She needs to build muscle and she is – it’s hard to tell looking at the pictures – but she is.  Slow and steady…  Yes, Betsy Rose is still thin but she’s put on a good amount of weight.  She is more steady on her feet each day.  She’s a fighter that believes she can – and she will!

I will be so happy for Betsy Rose when she is able to stay out of the sling.  It’s going to take a bit more time but I’ll know when the time is right.  She’s come a long way.

Betsy Rose. I think her name is just perfect. When I met her the name “Betsy” came to mind. I rubbed her forehead and saw the “design” on it and thought about rose bushes that my mom used to grow. Silly, I guess. But I like it and I think she does too!

The new flymasks are here!  Look at these boys – they are styling!

Harvey and Gracie.  Harvey is growing like a weed!  Dr. Lugo really did a great job putting Harvey’s little kneecap back where it should have been.

This is Mo.  He’s a 13 yr old Arabian gelding that is looking for a forever home.  He’s got a really great personality and a bit of brio – if only I were younger.  I just adore Arabians! Mo is smart and he loves to please.  Dr. Bess did his teeth yesterday.

Solace This Morning…

Dr. Bess was running late last evening so we rescheduled Solace’s dental evaluation for Sunday which was probably a good thing – Solace was a bit tired yesterday.  It was a cold night and he was at the gate asking for his warm mash this morning.  So, here goes another day… I’ll update this afternoon.  Please keep the prayers coming for Solace – I believe in miracles!  Have a blessed day everyone!

Update on The Christmas Trio, Hollie, Blackie and Donks!

December 12th, 2012

All of the Christmas Trio horses have names now. They have all settled in well and seem to just adore humans and appreciate every little thing done for them.

Nevada (means covered in snow).

Sachet.

Noelle.

Nevada’s right front foot is the one that had the roofing nail in it. The vet said Nevada was very lucky – it was embedded at an angle and location that missed everything it could have done some nasty damage to.

Sachet’s feet were not much better but no nail. Noelle’s back right has obviously sustained some sort of damage in the past. All three were good for Fabio and they seemed very pleased to have had their hooficures.

Dr. Bess did their teeth. The worst was Nevada’s – he’s youngest (5 yrs)! He had huge hooks and ramps. Dr. Bess was amazed at how bad his teeth were at his age. Sachet is about 13 years young and Noelle is about 15. I was told by the previous owner that Noelle was a real head tosser. With, or without, a bit in her mouth it would be easy to understand possibly why. She had lose teeth! Dr. Bess pulled one and will be checking the other the next time she comes or sooner if we notice any issues.

Blackie had visitors on Saturday – he has an angel! Thank you Melissa for helping him and for his gifts – he really feels special and sends a big “Thank you!” and says he wants you to come back soon to groom him and just spend time with him.

How sweet of a face is this? VERY sweet! Hollie visits with the young ones every morning. Dora and Starbuck are in the background. Hollie is doing very well. She is moving better and she’s gained some much needed weight and muscle. We do believe she has Cushing’s disease.

I had to share this. Here is Penelope taking a roll in the sand followed by Penny taking a roll in the sand! Baby donkey see – baby donkey do!

This is Beauty wanting to know where her treat is and when Santa is coming. LOL!

Hopefully tomorrow each of the horses is going to share with me what they want for Christmas and I’ll share with all of you! It’s hard to believe another year is coming to an end soon – it seems each year goes by faster. God bless and have a great night. Hopefully I’ll be able to post again tomorrow!

Rescue Happenings – It’s Quite Busy!

I’ve been guilty of not posting about horses here at the rescue and I apologize.  The case of 38 abandoned Paso Fino’s is taking a lot of time.  We have many wonderful people helping and more willing to help and I appreciate all of you.  While things may not appear to be moving fast – we are doing the best we can as fast as we can.  These are horses that haven’t been handled in 2+ years including 14 studs.  To give you an idea of how uncomfortable these mares were with people – the first day I was onsite 3 people walked into one of the paddocks where about a dozen mares live as a herd.  The mares ran away and jumped a fence – taking down the top board.  The last thing we want is for human or horse to be injured.  Working with situations like this requires a lot of patience and we don’t want any of the horses having a bad experience.  They appear, with each passing day, to be a little more comfortable with humans.  Some are being hand walked and are learning to trust.  Over the next couple of days coggins will be pulled on some, if not all, of the studs, and some feet will be trimmed.  We’ll be getting mares used to a round pen.

We need to find homes for all of these horses as soon as possible but if we can place the studs we could make use of the barn for the mares which would help.  Studs will be gelded with the exception of one that is 26 years old and mares are not to be bred.  We are busy in the office for this effort as well – we pray that some of our grant applications will be approved.  If anyone would like to offer a home to any of these horses an application can be downloaded from our website.  Donations are needed to help with their care – all donations are tax deductible and no amount it too small. Now, for an updates on others…

Buttercup has been in “school” for a couple of weeks.  While she is coming along she has shown herself (that’s our Buttercup!) but she is learning to be more confident and to overcome separation anxiety.  Gary is doing a great job with her and we hope to find Buttercup a home soon where her new human can continue her training.

Baby Ray is doing well and is very happy at his foster home.  He’s learning new things and seems very content.  Baby Ray is looking for his forever home.

Montana is doing great – he’s now looking for a forever home. He’s quite the character and makes us laugh.  Katie got up on him a few days ago – I think he’s likely been a cow horse in his younger days.  Doesn’t like direct reining – gave Katie a buck or two at first.  Neck reins great and doesn’t need or want any leg.

Harley, the Belgian that was surrendered to us 3 weeks ago, with untreated eye cancer, is doing great.  His surgery went well and the eye looks great – we have an application for his adoption and a very special family is coming to meet him this weekend!

Jessie and Ron visited today and the weather was perfect! All of the horses (and us humans) enjoyed seeing them again.  I think little Indy was smiling – hoping to get more carrots but Jessie split them evenly but Baby Girl and Morning Star were doing their own face making. Morning Star is absolutely gorgeous and is looking for a forever home. Baby Girl has some dapples!

Morning Star loves his ball and has made up many games to play with it.  And he’s learned how to deflate it – I think he finally killed it this week though!

Aaleyah Belle made sure she hogged the carrots.  Jessie got slimed – a few times!

Dr. Bess (Tune-Ups Equine Dentistry) was here this week to do some dental work.

Amadeus, Silver Belle, and Legacy.  Silver Belle and Legacy are really nice horses and are looking for their forever homes.  Amadeus – we have some plans for him with one of our UF volunteers!

Ghost is doing well. It’s like he’s lived here all of his life.

Kami got a bath today – she’s still our little spit fire!  I don’t know who was more wet – Kami or Marie and Katherine!

These horses are not at the rescue but we are working with AC to place.  Mustang with ear tips that were frozen off when she was out west – est. 13 yrs old.  Six year old Appaloosa and a 9 year old QH. I’m told all are ridden by experienced children.

And these two are urgent – they are at AC and their time is very limited.  If we can’t find homes for them they will be euthanized.  Rogue is a Mustang that appears to have not been handled much, if at all.  He’s not mean – has not offered to kick or do anything of the sort – he just departs the area where a human may be approaching and will hide behind Bucky.  Rogue is a beautiful mover and just needs to learn to trust.  He has very kind eyes and demonstrates that he wants to interact with humans – it will just take some time and patience.  Bucky, well, he’s a sweetheart.

· Breakaway halters – Arabian/Cob size
· Breakaway halters – Average horse size.
· Breakaway halters – miniature horse size.
· Long AND short nose Cashel flymasks in sizes Arab and Horse.
· Three play balls (size large)
· Miniature lightweight blanket for Haley – I’ll have to check her size tomorrow.
