Members from Animal Warriors spent a good part of the day helping out – we got some projects done and some of the horses even got a bath! Animal Warriors is a group of like minded individuals from all walks of life who share a common goal of helping animals with active volunteer groups.  All of the horses really enjoyed the extra attention.

“Mommy Theresa I know you’re in there! I just want to come in and see you for a little while. We all miss Princess and I know you’re sad but if I can come in I’ll cheer you up some!”

Well, JoJo did come in and cheered us up. He looked for the Christmas tree and couldn’t understand why it couldn’t live in the house. He kept staring at where it was – his brain was certainly trying to understand.

We have so much to be thankful for – we need to cherish each and every minute. Take time to make memories. Someday, that’s all you will have of those that you love.

February 2nd

Check out Bouie’s beard.

I don’t know who was more fascinated by size – Mishka or the mini’s next door!

February 3rd

Happy Tuesday morning! That’s Peaches munching from one of our slow hay feeder nets. Wonder what Ebony is thinking? Little Lily is so darned cute.

Amber and Baby Ray playing – just beautiful!

Little E is our Senior resident now. Another noble Arabian that is adored by all of us. We had awesome visitors today and I have quite a few pics to post but will have to get caught up tomorrow afternoon.

February 4th

Jessie spent the day here yesterday – Baby Ray enjoyed seeing her again (so did we)! We look forward to her visit at this time each year when she and her husband, Ron, come down from a northern state for a few days.

Jessie has known Baby Ray since he came to us as an orphan baby in August 2009. We brought him home in our mini-van. Baby Ray had cataracts and couldn’t see. Once he grew healthy, we took him to UF where they removed the cataracts. He is visually impaired but he can see.

Aaleyah Belle also enjoyed seeing Jessie again.

We named Aaleyah after Eight Belles. We picked her up only a few hours after she was born – it was the day that Eight Belles died. Aaleyah and her mom, Currently Sue (aka Momma Sue), were going to be shot because Aaleyah was born with a wry nose. Momma Sue was skin on bones – it’s amazing that they survived.

Aaleyah Belle before and after surgery.

Yesterday, Serenity got to personally thank someone that has helped her since the day she arrived. It’s always nice when humans come to meet the horses they help. Thank you Phil!

Serenity arrived at about this time last year – we intercepted her just before she was going to be shot by the local rendering company. She’s a beautiful girl – inside and out.

Handsome (Saddlebred) is still looking for a forever home. Mishka (Percheron) is still in rehab. He’s gained weight but still needs quite a bit more muscling up. Some horses recover quicker than others from EPSM – it could take a few months. Proper diet is key.

Matilda – she’s a very loving long ears. And yes, she is still huge.

Remember Cisco, Tia, and Tess? Cisco came to us in September 2012 – he was 20+ years young. He had been removed from a bad situation – I’ll just say that he came to us known as the “Meth Pony”. Tia and Tess came to us in the Spring of 2013 – Tess was about 3 months old. All three were adopted together by a wonderful couple that volunteered at the time. Cisco takes care of his two girls. Tia, Tess, and Cisco are loved by their humans, very much.

Ginger is doing well with her adoptive family – she has a new BFF.

Daisy doesn’t realize she’s different – she’s full of love and life. She has a large tumor (sarcoid) under her right eye and another over her left eye. Dr.’s Mangan and Porter started her treatments (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG)) about …3 weeks ago when she got her first injections. She is also getting a daily supplement and we apply a topical cream to the tumors. Daisy was examined again last Friday and there have been positive changes at both eyes! She is scheduled to receive her 2nd injections this coming Friday. Daisy is only 5 years old and deserves a chance – we hope others will help us give her that chance. If anyone would like to help this darling little long ears with her needed treatments our PayPal address is bhfer@earthlink.net (please note it’s for Daisy). No amount is too small and all donations are tax deductible.

Please keep Daisy in your prayers. Thank you!

Athena is another beautiful mare. She is having lameness issues (its not in her feet) and really needs to be examined but she needs sponsors. She currently does not have enough sponsors to even cover her monthly routine care costs. Would anyone like to help Athena with a one time or monthly donation?

Athena the day I met her.

I’ve put this off but need to ask – would anyone like to help with Princess’ emergency vet, hospital, and burial expenses? We are several hundred dollars short. If you would like to help, our PayPal address is bhfer@earthlink.net – please mark it for “Princess”. Other ways to donate can be found on our website at www.bhfer.org. No amount is too small and all donations are tax deductible. While we wish she were still here with us, we are very thankful for the years we had with her. This was Princess a few years ago. She’s always been a beautiful girl.

Monday:
When Dr. Lugo first examined Betsy Rose yesterday, he feared she had fractured something. We were all happy when x-rays indicated there are no fractures. An ultrasound was done but showed no issues – that made us even more happy! She definitely has an issue in her back left – she may have strained herself getting up after laying down. We are to continue doing what we are doing – stall rest, some hand grazing, heat, massage, etc. Dr. Julia will be here tomorrow to do acupuncture. Betsy Rose did seem more comfortable today and she did put more weight on her back leg. She really is very fragile and will be for quite some time. You can see the area of injury that was shaved for the ultrasound.

Dr. Lugo examines Betsy Rose. She has been having a lot of problems with her back left hip/leg. We wanted to make sure nothing was fractured and that there was no major tear of any kind. She’s always a good girl.

Tammie was here the last couple of days and got to experience quite a bit of Betsy Rose. Thanks so much Tammie, for all of your help!

“Mommy Theresa, are we done yet? I’m trying to be a good patient but I’d rather be out grazing and all of this bending and twisting is no fun. I promise I won’t chase Lucy!”

Tuesday:
Betsy Rose was very happy to have visitors this evening. She got a LOT of extra attention! She loves introducing her friends to people. Sometimes she lets Freckles do the introductions but this evening she wanted to do them herself. She pretty much gets what she wants.

Betsy Rose Loves Visitors

We had x-rays done of Bouie’s front feet yesterday. He foundered last year and had slight rotation. He recently started having trouble again. Yesterday’s x-rays indicated that he has rotated more in his front right but Dr. Lugo feels that with corrective trimming, Bouie will be comfortable. The x-rays were worth every penny!

The raffle for the Betsy Rose artwork is over! We are going to wait until the end of the week as a number of checks will be arriving via snail mail. Once we make sure that the name of everyone who has participated is in the hat, a winner will be drawn and announced.

Thank you all so much for your love and support!

Sincerely,
Theresa

Sweet little Lucy wanted to go out and explore in the big paddock today. She’s so cute! Lucy has Big Head Disease aka Bran Disease.  But we all love Lucy!

Little E is getting more and more gray but he’s still very handsome!

Beautiful Bella has developed breathing issues. She’s being treated by Dr. Julia. She needs to find a good home – the longer she is here by this lime rock road the worse she will get. I know, believe me, I know. The lime rock dust is horrible and a large part of the reason I get respiratory issues.

Today was hooficure day! We have many more hooficures needed – would anyone like to help cover this expense? No amount is too small! Our PayPal address is Theresa. Donations are tax deductible and can also be made via our website at https://www.bhfer.org. All donations are very much appreciated!

Hooficures Needed

It’s been a long day and I’m really looking forward to bed. I’ll post pictures from today and provide a detailed update after feeding in the am.

Some not so good news for Bouie.  Some not so bad news for Betsy – whew! Tammie made it down to volunteer for a couple of days and was a big help today! Here she is with Betsy Rose letting her graze for bit.

Thank you all so much for your support – have a blessed night!

Betsy Rose visiting with Jane and Steve yesterday.  Betsy Rose is loved by everyone! And she loves the attention!

CaryLou, Harvey, and Wally enjoy visitors too. They look like little powder puffs with their fuzzy coats.

Penny isn’t a baby anymore! She won’t be as big as her momma. She was singing this am to a donkey at the neighbors. It was so cute. Her bray has gotten so much stronger and louder!

Penny demanding all of the attention yesterday. That’s her mom, Penelope, trying to take a siesta. Penny loves to take the humans water bottles, cell phones, etc.

Nadia is getting quite a tummy on her. I think we’re going to have her palpated. We don’t know about her history other than she had a baby pulled from her a couple of months before she came to us. She’s a really nice 16 yr old Warmblood.

Gracie smiles for the camera.

Bouie makes faces. LOL

Nevada has the kindest eyes. He looks great in pink too.

Nevada will be leaving for his new home tomorrow. He will be less than 15 minutes away. It’s always bittersweet when they leave but this is what we do. They all deserve a good forever home.

Have a great Sunday, Everyone!

Theresa

It’s with a heavy heart that I share that Pebbles has crossed Rainbow Bridge. Pebbles was a mini mare that we took in 2+ years ago, in June 2011 – she had been attacked by her owner’s dog. Skinny, untreated puncture (bite) wounds, and just plain neglected…. She went to live with a wonderful human family not far from us after her rehab. I’m so glad she had her own family these last couple of years. Her best friend was Weegie and I’m sure he misses her a lot. We love you Pebbles – always!

The first picture was taken when she first arrived at the rescue.

This is Pebbles with Weegie.

Our little Betsy Rose is feeling better! “Mommy Theresa it really is time for more treats!”

I’d like to ask everyone to say a prayer for Bouie. He is having a bout with laminitis. We caught it early – he has foundered in the past.

Sincerely,
Theresa

Bouie and Frodo made a break out yesterday – the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. LOL

Little Lily and her mom, Ebony, also took off. Like any of these 4 really need to gain any weight. Frodo wanted all of the grass to himself so he tried to chase them off – hopefully he ran off some calories.

Sisco had SCC when he came to us months ago. But he is doing well. We’ve been able to give him many months of a happy life and hopefully many more years to come.

Another Beauty’s Haven horse that we brought to Beauty’s Haven from a horrible situation last year. She landed in the arms of an angel. Thank you Jordan! Starlight grazing.

Starlight and Jordan!

Just look at beautiful Sienna! Thank you Kathy & Jamie!

This is Sienna the day we rescued her along with Dingolay (Layla) and Tonka back in May 2009.

And look at Legacy! Thank you, Jan Braakman for giving him the home and love he so deserves! Legacy came to us only a few days old in November 2009.

February 10th, 2018

A couple of the horses got a much needed bath this weekend and most got a good grooming.  The mini mares got off the hook for being clipped – there just was not enough time and they are going to be a project.

If only the weather would be this perfect all year and the horses would stay this clean…

Roxy adores Peggy Sue – and the feeling is mutual.

Solace is still doing well and he adores his food!

Nevada looks very handsome!

Sisco eating hay out the back of the truck.  He is doing well too.

Bouie and Frodo – our little fuzzy bears. They are also in the waiting line to be clipped.

Morgan LaFaye – she’s looking for a home.  She’s a very sweet girl.  I apologize that the picture is fuzzy – I took it with my phone.

Hollie is also very sweet.  She has not adjusted well to the Florida environment and is having trouble breathing – the blowing dust from the lime rock road is not good for her and we have very little shade. She will be leaving soon for her new home where she will be more comfortable.  We will miss her but her new mom will keep us updated.

Sunset also has labored breathing.  She needs to find a home that is better suited for her and the sooner the better – before warmer temperatures arrive.  Like with Hollie, the dust that blows off the lime rock road is not good for her and she needs shade.  I’m so glad she was clipped last weekend.

Some of you may remember Archer – he is doing great and his family adores him!  That’s his best friend on the right.

It was a really busy weekend here.  A lot got done – a big “thank you” to everyone that took time out of their busy schedule to come out and help.  The more hands we have to get daily chores done the better – it leaves time for other things like baths, clipping, raking, cleaning up the barn, etc.  It really takes a lot of time, money, and hands on to keep this place going.  We are very blessed to have the support we have – here and from afar.  It’s only because of other people pulling together to help us that we are successful – be it donations, prayers, sharing our info with others, etc.  Without all of you helping us we couldn’t do what we do – we sincerely thank you.

And many thanks to Marie for making and donating the necklaces that helped us to raise the funds to pay for Solace’s blood transfusion – that is a lot of worry off my mind.  And it is only part of the vet bill. We still have a jewelry auction going on to help with other vet needs. And we need to buy hay again.  Some of the horses are getting a hooficure this week – if anyone would like to sponsor a horse please let me know.

I’m calling it a day.  God bless and again, thank you all, very much for your continued support.  Have a wonderful week!

Oh – please don’t forget the current “Valentine’s Day Match Game!” If you donate towards the Match Game please indicate so with your donation.

One of our wonderful supporters has offered a very generous $200 Match Game for Valentine’s Day!  The supporter will match each dollar donated from others until we hit the $200 limit!
So this means a possibility of $400 in donations!

Please remember that all contributions are tax deductible and no donation is ever too small.
