CJ Has a Home and Updates on Many Others!

January 7th – 10th, 2014 Update

Betsy Rose got “the works” on Tuesday from Dr. Julia Simonson. Betsy Rose is always the perfect patient. Below is a video of part of her treatment – just watch those needles move! Her back right hip area was pretty stiff. I’ll be so glad when the cold is gone – its really hard on the older horses.

Gentleman also got a massage and an acupuncture treatment which he really needed and enjoyed.

BHFER Tuesday & Wednesday Update

The walk Betsy Rose took last night was 185′ long and she did it on her own (with spotters)!

Look how happy she is – we were all happy! After she got going, she felt good enough to try to walk a bit faster but she tripped and thankfully, we caught her. She recovered and took a rest and then kept going. She’s a very smart little mare with a huge determination!

Remember Gypsy, the mare that was going to be fed to big cats because she was dangerous? I adored this mare. Here is a link to her story when she first arrived at Beauty’s Haven.

We would never knowingly adopt out a horse that is dangerous. Well, being around horses, there is always a chance for danger. But Gypsy is a loving and beautiful soul. Someone just needed to listen to her and communicate with her in a non threatening way and show her that having a relationship with a human could be a good thing. I spent some time on the ground with her – a few short sessions a day over a few weeks is all it took. She wasn’t mean or anything of the sort. She went to her adopted home many weeks ago and she is adored!

The boys will be able to play together in a couple of months. Soon, we will have a castration day before it gets hotter. All 3 will get snipped.

Next week will be busy – and a bit stressful. Solace is tentatively scheduled to go to the hospital on Thursday, June 25th, to have his cracked tooth extracted – it’s all the way in the back of his mouth. Dr. Porter did x-rays and it appears to be cracked. This could be the source of infection that leads to his sinus. The estimate was $450. We have received $200 thus far and need an additional $200. Would anyone like to help with this need? The top picture was what he looked like when he arrived this past December – another horse that would not have lasted much longer. The picture on the bottom was recently taken.

 

Dr. Ryan was out to look at a spot just under Cookie’s left eye – it’s that dreaded “C” word – squamous cell carcinoma. Cookie is tentatively scheduled to go to the hospital on Monday to have it surgically removed. It does not appear that the eye itself has been compromised and we are very thankful for that. She had been adopted out but came back a few months ago. If anyone would like to help to sponsor Cookie’s surgery and aftercare please let me know – we need to raise $1000 – $1200.


Update: Solace’s surgery is taken care of – thank you everyone! Now we need to get Cookie’s cancer taken care of. SCC is an aggressive cancer and the sooner the surgery the better. Another trip down memory lane…

Another trip down memory lane… January 28th, 2010. I got a call about a horse that had been abandoned on a huge parcel of property – the grass was dormant. An adjoining neighbor had been tossing hay over to the horse for months and luckily there was a big old metal tin container that collected rainwater. But the neighbor was moving and the horse would have been all alone with nobody to know if he was sick, alive, or dead. Jenny went with me to meet the horse and gather facts from the neighbor and as we were getting ready to leave the horse followed and whinnied to us as if saying “Please wait! Don’t leave me here!” I went over and stroked his neck and the name “Heart” just came to me – I promised Heart we’d come back.

We brought him to the rescue – you couldn’t have found a sweeter or more appreciative horse. Thinking about him living on the empty property through the cold months with no blanket, no shelter, and very little hay made me very sad. Heart got strong over the next few months and was ready for a home. In early November he had an appointment to meet a human family when the unthinkable happened – he coliced! He was sick for many weeks – we didn’t know if he would make it. And we were not sure the family would wait for him or if they would want a horse that had coliced. But Heart improved and when he was better the family came to visit with him on December 5th. The son, Sam, had lost his horse over a year before and he had been looking for just the right horse. During the visit, Sam took Heart for a walk – you could see and almost feel the connection. It was very moving to say the least! Heart beamed and looked so proud to have this nice young many on his back!

Heart was going to have a home – they wanted to add him to their family! But then Heart got sick again and was not able to leave until December 31st but what a day that was – a day we all had been waiting for! It’s a day some senior horses never experience – going to a forever home where they will have their own human to love and care for them. But this grand senior horse finally had his forever home and his own boy to be his best friend! Who says story tales don’t exist and dreams don’t come true? Bah – humbug! We have proof they do!

Heart’s human family keeps us updated – this picture was taken last month. Sam still adores Heart and the feeling is mutual – Heart adores Sam. Sam’s sister, Emma, has her best friend Snicker’s. This is what we want for all of them – love, dedication, respect, full tummies, no worries – a forever loving home.

Montana, Asiya, Baby Passion, and a new arrival…

Some good news to share…

Montana and Asiya have been adopted – together!  These two have waited for quite awhile to find homes but it’s been worth the wait!  It’s hard to find homes for any horse but to find a home for two together is just awesome!  And they will only be about 2 hours from the rescue.  Congratulations Asiya, Montana, and Lexi! This beautiful photo of them was taken of them a few days ago by Stephanie Colleen, professional photographer.

Meet our latest arrival.  She is a 5 year old TWH mare that needs help for some medical issues.  Dr. Ryan will be out tomorrow to examine her and run some blood work.

She is a bit underweight and she has open sores all over (mostly on her left side, face, neck, hips, and tail) that are itching her terribly to the point where she is mutilating herself trying to find relief.  It may be allergies but we will know more tomorrow after Dr. Ryan examines her.

She lived alone.  However, there was a stud that lived in a nearby farm that jumped the fence to get to her a few months ago.  We don’t know if she was bred or not.  Would anyone like to help us to help her?  We were not planning on bringing another in at this time but once I met this sweet mare and saw how much she needed help I couldn’t turn her away.  Knowing Montana and Asiya are leaving made the decision easier.
