Dr. Clark called and the good news is that Solace does not have histoplasmosis. The bad news is that values in the blood drawn today were even worse. He is bleeding out and they don’t know why. They are pulling blood from their blood donor horse and will be out to do a transfusion soon. I can’t imagine going backwards in his recovery. Please continue to pray for Solace.

Theresa

There are a couple of pregnant mini mares that need help. They have lived out to pasture and used as breeding machines. The most concerning to me is a 20 year old. She looks depressed and she is full of sticky burrs. Her feet are horrible – walking on them can’t be comfortable much less walking on them being pregnant! We want to bring both of them in but this mare needs us the most. We need help with her vetting and care. Please – can anyone help us to get this girl out of this situation? If we can get sponsors for the other mare we will bring her too.

We need first month’s vetting, dental, farrier, and routine care for the 20 yr old. And then we need sponsors for her monthly care for 6 months. The mares are due to foal in April. The vet examined them this am and said the one (20 yr old) may have problems. Yes, I would feel absolutely horrible leaving the other mare behind – we would like to help them both which means we’d need double sponsorships.

Some good news – Starbuck and Dora are being adopted together!!! We’d like to ask that those that have been helping with their monthly care consider switching over to help this mare(s). Rayo has been adopted and will be leaving over the weekend – this would free up a paddock for the mare(s).

I have to run – awaiting on a phone call from the vet on Solace’s CBC pulled today – need to go give him his meds. I’ll update when I know more.

If you can help with the mini mare(s) please LMK and put Pregnant Mini Mare in the subject line. Thank you!

Theresa

He did very well today and didn’t run a temperature once – and no snots or coughing! The sun was out and it was a very beautiful day! Here he is trying to nap after getting breakfast. He’s incredible!

I’m so tired I left out a very important thing – Dr. Clark says Solace may have histoplasmosis which is very rare in horses. If he does have it, his prognosis would not be good. Please pray that isn’t the case.

Solace has small areas of pneumonia but there was no free fluid on his lungs – they did not have to drain his chest. The transtracheal wash revealed an inflammatory process with no bacteria seen – suspicious fungal organisms were seen and a sample is being sent out for additional testing. We don’t know what caused the hemorrhages to the conjunctiva in his left eye but that is the least of our worries at this point. Our big worry – he is anemic and it is getting worse. There were no areas of overt intra-cavity hemorrhage found but based on blood work there is internal bleeding but they don’t know where or what is causing it. His medications were adjusted and another CBC will be done on Wednesday. Based on those findings, Solace may need a blood transfusion.

They did a lot of testing on him today and I know he must be tired. I was worried about how he would handle the trip but I should have known he would endure – he adores life and is a fighter – he is remarkable. After all of the things done to him today he was still bright and alert. He is a very proud horse with character and class.

So we continue his prescribed treatment plan and we pray. Hopefully the blood work to be done on Wednesday will be better. While we know God could call Solace home at any time we find comfort in knowing that he knows he is loved – every second we have with him is a blessing.

I’m beat and need to finish up some things and call it a day. Please forgive me, once again, if I have not responded to your email. I likely won’t get back in the office to get to emails again until tomorrow night. God bless all of you for caring and for your continued support. If anyone would like to help with today’s vetting for Solace you can call a credit into the hospital (Peterson & Smith) at 352-237-6151 or donate via various ways on our website. All donations are tax deductible and no amount is too small. Thank you and have a blessed night.

At the hospital…

Being ultrasounded.

Rebreathing test.

He has hemorrhages in his left eye.

There is something above the heart but don’t know what it is yet. They did a trans trachea wash.

The good news is that they don’t have to drain his chest. The infection in his lungs is something he should be able to overcome but the big concern now is that he has been anemic – we have been monitoring it and it has been getting progressively worse and we don’t know why. More tests are being done. The hemorrhages in the conjunctiva of his eye were caused by trauma but we don’t know what trauma.

This boy is really amazing – his survival thus far is nothing short of a miracle and we pray the root of his sickness is discovered. We have been working hard to help his immune system to get stronger – he needs more time. I don’t have any nails left to chew. I’ll update more when I know more.

After we get through today I will worry about raising funds for his vetting today. I needed to get up a FB auction for a ton of hay – we ordered one ton for delivery tomorrow but if we order 2 tons we get a better price.

I’m still waiting for the vet to come for Beauty – the weather is playing havoc on so many horses – it’s hard to get someone out because they are busy on other colic cases. Tomorrow is supposed to be better.

Theresa

Ok, so I’m pouting and a nervous wreck. Much going on – the vet is coming to oil Beauty and examine another horse.

I called Pam and she picked up Solace for his hospital appointment.

She will stay with him and keep me updated. I couldn’t be in two places at once.

Please pray for him and Beauty. I’ll update as I know more.
Solace – blanketed, loaded, and on his way.

Solace will be going to the hospital tomorrow afternoon. He was about the same today except that he did have a temperature this morning. I didn’t hear any coughing though and there was no nasal discharge. We did have a little talk first thing this morning about how he was feeling and he’s so funny – he seemed to be really interested in what I had to say – LOL!

He is wrapped in his blanket and tucked in his stall for the night. Please continue to keep him in your prayers. Thank you!

Theresa

Some pictures from the past few days before calling it a day. We’re beat here and I hope and pray I’m asleep before my head hits the pillow. J

Sunset – she’s such a sweet and funny mare.

Hollie. Everyone adores her!

Solace today – at least the clouds were gone for awhile and the warm sun felt really good – to all of us! I will never understand how anyone could turn their heads to an animal in such poor shape. I wish I could say he’s out of the woods and will be just fine but I can’t. We take each and every minute that he is with us a blessing. He has such a positive attitude – it was easy to see that today he just wasn’t feeling well. But we all have some days that are better than others, right? Please pray for him.

We had extra volunteers today which helped a lot!

There’s always much to do all day long.

Lace and Blackie are still looking for a home. They got some much needed exercise today. They would make a great pair of trail horses.

Rayo’s mane before and after. He is the gelding that we picked up a few days ago.

And his tail before and after. Not much left, sadly.

Morgan LaFaye returned today – Penny came around to help to greet her. Morgan looks great – she’s a very sweet mare!

So tonight we continue to keep close eye on Solace. His temperature is currently normal – it was high today (102) and he refused his mash. But he’s currently enjoying his carrot mash and his temp is normal. Beauty had a good day today and hasn’t shown anymore tummy discomfort – thankfully!

I’ll try to video Popper and Penny playing their morning games tomorrow. They really are funny to watch. Both are fully of spunk! God bless and have a good night!

We’ve had a little setback with Solace. His temperature was slightly elevated this am and his snots were back – he was coughing. Dr. Ryan opted to leave the catheter in and keep him on the IV meds for now. Next week Solace will be having another ultrasound and his chest will be tapped and drained. Please continue to keep him in your prayers – he is not out of the woods and his immune system is still weak. It’s likely going to be a roller coaster ride with him for awhile but he’s got the right attitude and that helps tremendously! We still have items to auction off on Facebook to help with vetting but we just need the time to get them posted. There are not enough hours in a day!
