As we near the end of 2021, we have so much for which to be thankful.

We are thankful to our wonderful village of supporters as well as our amazing team of volunteers, who worked tirelessly to afford us the opportunity of granting a second chance at life to these 21 precious souls who have brought us such an inordinate amount of happiness and joy: Valley Girl, Buckshot, Remi, a precious newborn donkey; Allie, our mischievous Marmalade Tabby; Simba; Elvis and Ford; Miles, who without a doubt was sent to us through the intervention of our beloved Penny; Scooter; Kiah, the sweet little pup who was found scared and alone in the middle of the night with a badly injured paw; Ace, our beautiful Selle Francais; Belle Star; Lady Sophia and Candace; Piper, our sweet little dumpster kitten; three precious bunnies; our Christmas saves, Lennie and Michele; and lastly, Shai, our final rescue of 2021.

But as in the Circle of Life, our joy was tinged with sadness when our beloved Penny, Ace, Nash, Haley, Jasmin and Cleo, a precious newborn kitten, transitioned to Rainbow Bridge, where we know deep in our hearts, that they are all now happily romping about with the Heavenly Herd.

Beauty’s Haven unfortunately had a number of horses returned to the rescue this year, through no fault of their own. We are thankful that they are home with us and we have promised them that they will always be forever safe and loved.

We are so truly honored by your love and support which enables us to be the voice of those sweet and innocent souls who are unable to speak for themselves. And for that, we remain eternally grateful.

Wishing everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year.
Theresa

The last few days have been tough for us here at the rescue. One of the senior members of our beloved herd, Nash, had recently been having issues. Despite all the love and care he received, we had to make the decision to help Nash transition to Rainbow Bridge yesterday. It was the same exact day a year ago that we had to make this very same decision for Little E. For those of you who have a Beauty’s Haven 2021 Calendar, Nash was our September horse of the month. Nash had been with us since 2004, he was a horse with a huge heart and a great mind. Born in 1992, he was a grandson of Dash for Cash.

I don’t like to say or even type the word “cancer.” I just call it the “C” word. Knowing we often can’t fix a “C” issue, we do everything possible to help make the horse comfortable and cherish every moment we are given with them.

But at a point, when there is nothing new to try and we have no doubt that their quality of life is impacted and is not going to improve, we love them enough to let them go.

Nash had twice been adopted out, but each time, he ended up back here at the rescue, his home. Not all adopters are able (or willing) to keep their commitment to provide a ‘forever’ home even if it had been their intention at the time. Our adoption contract requires a horse to be returned, if, for any reason, the adopter can no longer adequately provide care for the horse or no longer wants the horse. It also provides a means for us to reclaim a horse should the adopter choose not to do what is necessary to provide adequate care when given the opportunity. Sadly, the first time Nash was adopted out, he was returned due to the adopter’s priorities changing. The last time Nash was adopted out, we had to reclaim him after the adopter chose not to address care issues following a veterinary exam.

We were very blessed to have had this magnificent horse in our lives. And now, he runs pain free at Rainbow Bridge alongside Little E, together with another of his best friends, Jake, and the remainder of our beloved horses who have joined the heavenly herd. Someday, we will all be joyously reunited.

Nash knew love and he will forever remain in each of our hearts.

Sincerely,
Theresa

I’ve been putting off this post all evening – my heart is heavy. Penny was down this morning. I gave her pain meds and usually, after they kick in, she gets up with little assistance. This time, she needed more assistance and in the process of getting up, she twisted and you could see discomfort and uneasiness come over her. She wasn’t herself – she was uncomfortable and agitated. Penny is never agitated.

Before noon, Penny was down again. We were able to get her up again but she walked off and wanted to be left alone. She seemed more uncomfortable – her hips were sore and she was tense all over. She was weak in her hind end. She shifted her weight from one side to the other in her backend. We gave her some time but it didn’t help – she refused her meal, hay, and water. Penny made it clear that acceptance had set in and that she was tired.

We spoke with the vet and we both agreed that Penny’s quality of life had reached the line – we loved Penny enough to let her go.

Karen stayed with Nicky during the time that Dr. Templeton helped Penny transition to Rainbow Bridge and I never left Penny’s side. She got to hear many “I love you’s” as she left this world. It’s never, ever easy and each one takes a part of my heart with them when they go, yet a part of them always stays with me. We gave Nicky time with Penny this evening to help her understand what had happened, although I think she knew before we did that Penny needed release.

Penny was born blind 35 years ago and now she sees all of the colors in the rainbow. She was precious – a brave and gentle giant with the most loving, trusting soul. She will be in our hearts, always.

Sincerely,
Theresa

Every year, in celebration of the birthday of Barbaro, our dear friend, Jamie Gillispie, lovingly lays red and white roses at the foot of his statue at the Kentucky Derby Museum located at Churchill Downs. Each rose is dedicated to the memory of a loved one, whether they be a person or a beloved pet.

This year our wonderful friend and supporter, Kathy Breakall, donated a rose in memory of a former Beauty’s Haven horse, Point to Ponder aka My Girl, who was injured while racing at Calder Race Track in 2008. She was transported to Ocala Equine Hospital where she underwent surgery to repair a slab fracture of the knee. My Girl was doing well and recovering nicely at Beauty’s Haven until the day the hardware in her knee failed. Tragically, there was nothing more we could do and we had no other choice than to let her go.

My Girl was beautiful, appreciative, brave and so full of life. She will forever remain in our hearts.

Thank you Kathy Breakall and Jamie Gillispie for honoring our beautiful girl.

Many of you may remember Kami and her mom, Haley, who had been adopted to good friends of the rescue several years ago. Sadly, Haley passed away during the night a few evenings ago which left a hole in many human hearts. It also left Kami with no other horsey friend.

Kami’s adoptive parents talked to us about the situation, and, as much as they care about her, we agreed that it would be in Kami’s best interest if she returned to Beauty’s Haven.

We are so grateful to Sherry and Kenny for giving the girls a great home and for loving Kami enough to do what is best for her. Sherry and Kenny will be moving closer to the rescue and Sherry will be back to volunteer and see Kami.

Kami Meets Sassy

We all figured Kami and Sassy would either get along great or not at all. They had a good meeting and walked off together after they met. I thought it would take just a little time for the girls to figure out who is the sassiest and, by the end of the day, I think it was decided by Kami that she is the lead princess.

Haley will never be forgotten and she will forever remain in each of our hearts.

Sincerely,
Theresa

Forever in our Hearts

Just prior to Christmas, our beloved Kitty Cat went to Rainbow Bridge. He had sadly, been fighting cancer for quite some time. Although Kitty Cat had a number of surgeries, his quality of life was not what it should have been and we just couldn’t ask anymore of our beautiful boy. We thereby, made the decision that it was time to let him go to a place where he would once again, become young and forever free from pain, a place where he could chase butterflies throughout the verdant fields of heaven with all of his beloved friends who have gone before him.

We loved Kitty Cat so very much and the farm has just not been the same without him.

It has been particularly hard, however, on his best friend, Oreo, who has been quite depressed since Kitty Cat’s passing. We recently, decided that it was time to find a new friend and companion for Oreo to help heal his broken heart. And then, we discovered Allie.

We’ve had way too many losses in 2020 and I hope and pray that 2021 will bring about good things. I don’t know how much more my heart can take before it just shatters into a million pieces.

Allie

Allie arrived at Beauty’s Haven on Wednesday, however Oreo will have to wait just a few more days to meet his new friend. Since Allie presented with signs of respiratory infection, we immediately took her to the vet. The poor girl is missing quite a few teeth in her left jaw and she recently recovered from a terrible case of scabies. She is now on antibiotics and will have to return to the vet in two weeks. Hopefully she will be able to meet Oreo after the visit.

Prior to her rescue, Allie had been living on the streets, trying desperately to survive. As per the vet, she is about four years old.

Please keep Oreo and Allie in your prayers.

Sincerely,
Theresa

It is going to be a very sad day – an emotional one. Little Tilly’s COPD has progressed to the point where her quality of life is just not there and the kindest thing we can do is to let her go to Rainbow Bridge.

Tilly is so very sweet. She still has spirit and spunk, but she is now really struggling. Over the last couple of weeks, she’s lost weight and is having a significantly harder time breathing and she’s not finishing her meals.

Dr. Elizabeth spent time with her yesterday and after reviewing her condition, and what options there are (we are out of options, really), we agree it is time to let her go.

We lost Ceri a few days ago to colic and I learned that we lost Reese yesterday. I will update about them after tomorrow. They were both very sweet mares that were adopted out years ago.

We have lost so many this year. It’s very, very hard on the heart.

Please keep Tilly (and those of us who love and adore her) in your thoughts and prayers.

Thank you & God bless.

Sincerely,
Theresa

I’d like to ask for good thoughts and prayers for our beloved Max who peacefully, transitioned to Rainbow Bridge yesterday morning.

Max was committed to watching over the farm and the animals at Beauty’s Haven for the past fourteen years. Many times he’d alert us that something was amiss and we’d go out and discover that he was gently pinning down another dog that had wandered onto the property while being so very careful not to hurt the frightened pup. He was, truly, the absolute best.

We love Max so very much and he will forever remain in our hearts. The farm just won’t be the same without him.

Sincerely,
Theresa

Sisco went to Rainbow Bridge yesterday, very peacefully. I can just imagine his reunion with many of our herd that went before him. They are all loved, always.

Sincerely,
Theresa

I apologize for taking so long to explain what happened with Little E. I haven’t been adjusting very well to the new normal here without him. He was the first horse we’d look for each morning before breakfast and the last we’d see each night, for his 11pm feeding. And in between breakfast and the last meal of the day, he received four additional soft mushy meals. His teeth had been worn down to next to nothing before he came to us.

You could tell the time of day here because Little E would show up and let you know it was time for his next meal – he was quite the character.

Often, you could find him standing alongside Magic’s fence line, even during the hottest and sunniest of days, or standing beneath the Friendship Tree. He’d also show up under the tree on Frosty’s Knoll when it was time to be fed. Sometimes, when you’d walk with him, he’d “chit chat” with a deep whinny that vibrated throughout the air. I miss him, and that deep grumbling whinny, so very much.

After Little E had a seizure last Saturday afternoon, he improved and stabilized. On Sunday morning, he looked good and he ate breakfast. A couple of hours later, he took a turn for the worse and it started again – aimlessly walking and spinning, muscle tremors, and sweating.

I contacted Dr. Templeton right away and asked her to come out. There’s not much you can safely do to help a horse when the horse is having a seizure, especially if they are spinning in circles and unsteady on their feet. But we were able to halter Little E and we stood with him for awhile. Then he started walking and slowly spinning again – he was exhausted and finally went down and he did so pretty gently, thankfully. While waiting for the vet to arrive, I checked his vitals. I also checked his eyes and there was no menace response, my heart was very heavy. I stayed with him, holding his head while talking to him, and prayed for a miracle.

When Dr. Templeton arrived, we reviewed blood test results from the day before – everything was pretty much normal. As we talked about options, prognosis, etc., I was still holding onto Little E, watching and listening for any sign of hope from him, but it never came. Quality of life is so very important and doing what is in the best interest of each horse, after consulting with our care team and considering all options, is the path we take.

We loved Little E enough to let him leave this world as a proud Arabian with grace and dignity, while surrounded by a whole lot of love. It was the last and greatest gift we could give to him.

Bob and I were thankful that our daughter, Katie, and our son, Joshua, were home and got to say their farewells along with Jenny and Kathy. I’m sure Little E knew we were all there and that he was loved, so very much. I never let go of him and, as he transitioned to Rainbow Bridge, I told him how much he was loved and that he’d soon be with his old friends Jake, Gentleman, Solace, Point to Ponder, Hope, Princess, Granny Jewels, Abby, Matilda, Momma Sue, Cookie, Betsy Rose, and so many others, in a place where there would be no suffering, hunger, or pain. Little E went very peacefully to Rainbow Bridge. He was buried next to his very good friend, Bria.

Little E had been with us since August 2007, a year after Beauty’s Haven officially began. He became entwined in our hearts and lives and was part of the very soul of this rescue. He quickly became a self appointed Ambassador, our “meeter and greeter,” for anyone that showed up at the gate, be it human, horse, or other four-legged animal.

When new horses arrived, after being in quarantine, they would sometimes live with Little E on the two acres around our house and up on Frosty’s Knoll for awhile. They were free to wander about and had access to a number of paddocks where they had shelter if they wanted it. I loved watching them everyday. From orphan babies like Buttercup, to seniors like Bria, Little E was there for them. And for many, most recently, Bria and Nina, he was with them to the very end. The Friendship Tree will never be the same. In my mind’s eye, I still see him there.

Little E was a wise old soul and, for many humans, he was very therapeutic. He would listen as they shared their thoughts and stories with him and he’d make faces like he knew what they were saying – he simply made you feel good. He loved his mushy meals and Ginger Snaps but he didn’t care for his fly mask. We are very grateful for the time we had with him. It was a true blessing.

We appreciate everyone’s good thoughts and prayers – your support means a lot. We also appreciate Dr. Templeton’s support, very much, and our awesome volunteers who are also feeling the loss of a beloved soul.

Over the weekend, I hope to be able to sit and read the many lovely messages we have received. I’ve tried a couple of times but ended up in tears and had to walk away. Letting any horse go is so very difficult but I continue to hold on to the belief that someday, we’ll see our loved ones again. Little E may be gone but he will be with me always – he’s forever in my heart.

Sincerely,
Theresa
