Crickets Visit with Dr Bess

Once Dr. Bess was finished with Jiminy’s dental examination/ procedure, it was Cricket’s turn.
Cricket’s teeth were bad, too, but not as bad as Billy’s. She also has some missing teeth.
Cricket had an old injury on the upper eyelid of her left eye. The eyelid had been ripped, likely on a branch or fence. It had not been sutured, so the torn part of her eyelid didn’t move when she blinked.
Some of the lashes were turned inward towards the eye. This obstructed some of her vision and most undoubtedly, irritated her eye as well.
Dr. Bess removed the damaged part of Cricket’s eyelid while she was sedated for her dental procedure.
Voila! This photo was taken the very next day. What a beautiful eye!
All done with the dental needs – at least all that could be done today. It will be interesting to see how  Jiminy and Cricket do over the next few days. Their mouths may be sore for a day or so and they will have to get used to being able to chew.
Thanks to all of you, Jiminy and Cricket are well on the road to recovery!

Billys Visit with Dr. Bess

After the mini’s arrival, I noticed right away that Jiminy was quidding. He could not chew the hay that was on the ground. Although Billy tried to eat, he ended up spitting out balls of semi-chewed food.

This alone could make a horse depressed as well as cause weight loss. This is usually caused by issues with the teeth and it could indicate that he’s experiencing pain in his mouth.

We fed soft, mushy meals to Jiminy and Cricket until they could be seen by the dentist. Both Minis are up there in age – it could be that they don’t have many teeth, or their teeth are worn down, or both.

I texted a photo of Billy and his quidding to Dr. Bess Darrow of ‘Tune Ups’ Veterinary Equine Dentistry and Wellness Services to see when she could schedule both Minis. She was at the rescue in less than an hour! It was amazing!

Dr. Bess and her assistant, Ashley, are always great with the horses and they do a remarkable job!

Jiminy had no idea what was in store for him and we had no idea that his teeth were so bad. We’re very grateful to Dr. Bess for responding so quickly.

Jiminy’s teeth were a mess. He could not chew his food and in the process of trying, it was painful.

You can give a horse all the food in the world but if they are unable to chew it and grind it up in order for the body to process it correctly, they are going to drop in body weight.

There were very sharp points – ouch!

A view from the side – a twisted long front tooth had grown down over a lower one.

It took awhile, but look at the difference! Jiminy will be able to chew. However, he may still quid at times, due to missing and worn teeth.

All done with the dental needs – at least all that could be done today. Sometimes, it takes more than one visit to get optimum results. We certainly do appreciate Dr. Bess for responding so quickly! ‘Tune Ups’ Veterinary Equine Dentistry and Wellness Services is awesome!

Part II Cricket and Billys Happy Feet

Jiminy and Cricket got hooficures on Friday as there was a lot of licking and chewing going on. Both were very good. We really appreciate Stephanie making time to work them into her busy schedule. Look at that precious face.
Jiminy and Cricket’s hooves were a bit long.
Jiminy was off in his back right – due perhaps, to arthritis in the hip and fetlock joint. A trim may help relieve his discomfort.
Both had thrush in all four feet which we treated. They are better already!
This is one of Cricket’s feet. The “event” rings around the hoof wall indicate interruptions to hoof wall growth. This can be caused by a change in diet, illness, stress, a change in weather, etc.
And now, they both have happy feet thanks to the love and support of our wonderful village!

A New Chapter Sophia

On Thursday, we picked up the mini’s – a new chapter in their lives has begun! When it was time to transport them to the rescue, I told Jiminy and Cricket that they were going on an adventure. They walked right onto the trailer. I felt a bit of sadness – they were leaving behind the only home they’d ever known. But their humans did the right thing in reaching out for help – they needed to concentrate on their own well-being as they each were having health issues.
When we received the call asking if we could take in the minis, we knew that we had no available paddocks. However, even if we can’t take in a horse, we try to help by networking in an effort to find a good home.

After visiting with Jiminy and Cricket, and speaking with the owner, we knew we had to find a way as we felt a sense of urgency.  Cricket is 32 years young and Jiminy is 29.  We came up with an idea. We knew Cookie would be proud to help in this endeavor so we set up Cookie’s Corral for them! I miss Cookie so much – there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think of her.

A portable shelter was procured by a supporter and others have promised to help cover the cost of Cricket’s and Jiminy’s needs. The initial costs will be significant (vetting, dental, farrier, etc.)  It takes a village!
The little ones unloaded and settled right into their area.
On Friday, Jiminy and Cricket had a full physical by Dr. Simonson. Both were underweight, dehydrated, and had low body temps.  Jiminy’s heart rate was also low. Of the two minis, Cricket is more lively.
Dr. Julia double checked Jiminy’s heart and confirmed that his heart rate was low but the rhythm was okay. We will be monitoring this and are currently awaiting blood test results.

We truly appreciate any and all help for these sweet Minis and we cannot do this without assistance from others. Our village makes this possible!

Minis in Need Collage

Minis In Need

I had hoped to send out a more detailed update, but as always, something arises and I am unable to do so, but I need to apprise you of an urgent case involving four mini’s. The owners are elderly – both husband and wife are in the hospital and they can no longer care for their precious horses – a 29 year old stud, a 32 year old mare, and their offspring, a 16 year old mare and a 5 year old stud.
Although we are maxed out and have horses coming back to the rescue, we feel that we simply cannot turn our back on these sweet minis. There is a special urgency regarding the two elderly horses and we have a temporary solution as to where we can put them on the farm, thanks to the help of a supporter. They deserve to live out the remainder of their days, no matter how many that may be, in a loving environment and with proper care. They need coggins, full physicals (including blood work), dentals and hooficures. In order to help them, however, we need sponsors. Please – can anyone help with a one time or recurring monthly donation? We can start with pledges – I will get a cost estimate tomorrow after speaking with the vet. We can’t move forward without help from our village.
The two younger minis are in good shape and also need homes. The 5 year old stud has an issue with a back foot deformity that can be managed. The couple who owns the horses have a son who is willing to oversee the younger ones until a home is found (hopefully soon). They do not have to stay together and we’ve recently been advised that the 5 year old stud may have a home offer. I’d hate to think of the 16 year old mare being left behind, so please, if you may be interested in either of the two younger ones, please contact us and we can put you in touch with the owner’s son.
We also desperately need help placing horses that are ready for adoption – Zahara, Rosita, Baby Ray, Sophie, Tinsel, SeAnna, and others. Kandi and Shaker, two National Show Horse mares,  need placement ASAP –  Kiana will be available after 30 days of training which has been generously sponsored.  Additional information will be sent out about regarding these horses.

Match Game

A wonderful friend and supporter has come forth to offer a Match Game, whereby, all donations up to $500, will be matched dollar for dollar. Donations will be applied to medications for the horses.

If you would like to play the Match Game, you may do so via various means on our website at www.bhfer.org or via our PayPal address: bhfer@earthlink.net. If donating via PayPal, please designate your donation for ‘October Match Game.’ If you select the tab for ‘Friends or Family,’ no fees will be deducted from your contribution. Please be assured that all donations are greatly appreciated and no amount is ever considered as being too small.

Classy_ A Beautiful Journey
Classy is a very sweet pony that came to us many years ago, with an issue known as “roaring.” She had a tracheostomy performed at UF and recovered well.

Shortly afterwards, Classy was adopted out, but she came back to Beauty’s Haven a few years later. She had fractures in her coffin bones and she was a bit of a sinker. But her big brown, beautiful eyes that speak volumes, clearly said she wasn’t about to give up! We were very blessed to be able to provide supportive care and help her through her issues, and for the past few years, she’s been a happy little pony. However, over time, there have been changes in her bones and her arthritis has gotten worse. Acupuncture, boots/pads, supplements, a great farrier – she’s had it all. She’s also had a lot of love from many humans.

Classy has some good days and some not so good days. However, the not so good days have come to outnumber the good days. It is with a very heavy heart that I share that Dr. Ted will be helping Classy to Rainbow Bridge on Friday.

We love her so very much – enough to release her to join the heavenly herd where she will be able to run pain free through green pastures.  And, she will happily, be able to whinny once again! (Horses with trachs are unable to whinny.)

“To place your horse’s need for you to let her leave her failing body above your need to keep her with you – that – is the greatest and purest love.” ~ Cynthia Garrett

Back to Normal

JoJo and Jazzy were so happy to get out of their stall after the storm..

Penny is a 31 year old blind Belgian mare. Emma is a young QH filly that was shot multiple times a few months ago. They were both very brave throughout the night as Irma passed through – I was so proud of them!

This video features Penny and Emma as they greeted us at daybreak during the eye of the storm.

Kitty Cat had fun with a photo shoot during Hurricane Irma.

My daughter made me do it! But it was a much needed ride – if only for a few minutes. Fancy is a great mare!

The minis will be arriving home tomorrow following their little ‘vacation’ in Tennessee.  I simply cannot wait to welcome them home!

We are still assessing the storm damage and a detailed update will be forthcoming.

Thank you all for your continued love and support.

A Long Night Collage

We made it! All horses are accounted for. That was a really long night!  We are truly exhausted but very thankful that the storm is over.

Precious little Grace – she’s now officially, a ‘Storm Cat.’

Poor Betsy Rose looks like the way I feel.

The horses that stayed at the concrete barn during the storm all returned home today.

Lucy and CaryLou were quite happy to see their Mommy Theresa!
The rain is never ending. The barn is flooded and the water keeps coming.  Thankfully, the stalls are mostly dry. We still have to assess the damage and will keep you all updated.

Thank you so very much, once again, for keeping Beauty’s Haven in your thoughts and prayers.

Hunkering Down

Just a quick update to let y’all know that we’re hunkered down. We are still securing stall windows – the old latches broke. Winds are picking up and we’ve lost power a couple of times.

JoJo isn’t happy that he’s grounded to a stall. Neither are Cloud and Nickers. But hopefully, this will soon be over without any issues or injuries. The winds drive my anxiety level off the chart.

Betsy Rose is doing well. She is much calmer than I thought she’d be.
Lucy, Ruby, and the others that went to a concrete block barn are hunkered down with Jenny.
We were so blessed this morning when a local family we’ve never met, came to help – the windows on the house did get boarded up. Thankfully.
I’ll check in later. I don’t know how the rest of Florida is doing, but I’m praying for all of us. Believe…
Those winds!

Huricane Irma II Sophia

The horses in Tennessee absolutely love the weather and are having a great time on “vacation.” We picked up two mini geldings today that were adopted out a few years ago – their human family is going to a local storm shelter as our county is under a mandatory evacuation.  Some of you may remember the mini boys – Cloud Dancer and his dad, Nickers.
We will be hunkered down in our barn. Stalls will be full and there will be some horses out in the paddocks. When we built the barn, we included a good size A/C feed room with a fridge and a full bathroom. Fortunately, we have an automatic generator, so we should be okay.
We moved a few horses to another farm today that has a concrete block barn with huge stalls. A piece of my heart leaves every time another load of horses pulls out.
We still have some preparing to do and unless Irma shifts, the eye is headed right toward us. We normally have a bad internet connection and we expect it will get worse. I’ll try to keep in touch with Jeanne so she can keep you all updated.
To those who have donated – thank you. Supplies, stocking up on feed, gas, hay, propane for the generators and moving horses, etc., has been extremely costly. All of this has been exhausting – both physically and mentally but we’re going to make it through okay. Please keep everyone in Irma’s path in your prayers.

Believe…
