The walk Betsy Rose took last night was 185′ long and she did it on her own (with spotters)!

Look how happy she is – we were all happy! After she got going, she felt good enough to try to walk a bit faster but she tripped and thankfully, we caught her. She recovered and took a rest and then kept going. She’s a very smart little mare with a huge determination!

Remember Gypsy, the mare that was going to be fed to big cats because she was dangerous? I adored this mare. Here is a link to her story when she first arrived at Beauty’s Haven.

Gypsy

We would never knowingly adopt out a horse that is dangerous. Well, being around horses, there is always a chance for danger. But Gypsy is a loving and beautiful soul. Someone just needed to listen to her and communicate with her in a non threatening way and show her that having a relationship with a human could be a good thing. I spent some time on the ground with her – a few short sessions a day over a few weeks is all it took. She wasn’t mean or anything of the sort. As suspected, she was just misunderstood. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=TILUIjO2YlM

She went to her adopted home many weeks ago and she is adored!

The boys will be able to play together in a couple of months. Soon, we will have a castration day before it gets hotter. All 3 will get snipped.

Next week will be busy – and a bit stressful. Solace is tentatively scheduled to go to the hospital on Thursday, June 25th, to have his cracked tooth extracted – it’s all the way in the back of his mouth. Dr. Porter did x-rays and it appears to be cracked. This could be the source of infection that leads to his sinus. The estimate was $450. We have received $200 thus far and need an additional $200. Would anyone like to help with this need? The top picture was what he looked like when he arrived this past December – another horse that would not have lasted much longer. The picture on the bottom was recently taken.

Dr. Ryan was out to look at a spot just under Cookie’s left eye – it’s that dreaded “C” word – squamous cell carcinoma. Cookie is tentatively scheduled to go to the hospital on Monday to have it surgically removed. It does not appear that the eye itself has been compromised and we are very thankful for that. She had been adopted out but came back a few months ago. If anyone would like to help to sponsor Cookie’s surgery and aftercare please let me know – we need to raise $1000 – $1200.

Update: Solace’s surgery is taken care of – thank you everyone! Now we need to get Cookie’s cancer taken care of. SCC is an aggressive cancer and the sooner the surgery the better. Donations can be called directly into Peterson & Smith at 352-237-6151 to help Cookie. Please mention that the donation is for Cookie.

Please consider making a tax deductible donation to help us to continue to help the horses. No amount is too small. Donations can be sent to my PayPal address: theresa or made various ways via the “Donate” page of our website:  www.bhfer.org

Thank you all for your love and support.

July 14th – 15th, 2013

Sunday: Betsy Rose has been with us 4 weeks today (she arrived June 14th). She was too weak to stand the day she arrived and for a few days after. The sling has been her life line. It’s taken a lot of time and effort but she is now able to take short walks out of the sling. She needs to build muscle and stamina. She has a long rehab ahead of her but that’s ok – we believe in her! Her positive “can-do!” attitude is helping her every step of the way – we’re very proud of her baby steps!

This photo was taken a couple of days after her arrival. She was too weak to stand or to hold her head up.

Betsy Rose still stays in the sling but we take her out for a few minutes multiple times each day (weather permitting) for some physical therapy.

Betsy Rose has a full cataract in her right eye and sees shadows. She has a small cataract in her left eye. She has great hearing – the door to the feed room squeaks just a tad and when she hears that she perks up and asks for room service!

With all of the real grass around the house to eat why does Penny still insist on trying to eat the fake grass door mat?

After tossing the mat she decided we don’t need a boot cleaner at the bottom of the stairs either. So she picked it up and carried it away!

Our daughter, Katie, with CaryLou – everyone loves this little guy! We are naughty here – we teach the horses to give kisses!

Ariel and Celesta will be going to their new home on Monday. It’s always bittersweet when horses go to their new homes – but this is what we do. I’m very glad they will be staying together. I call Celesta my “little reindeer” because she loves to try to take off like she’s about to fly a sleigh! She is a lap baby but she’s getting too big for that!

It was pouring rain in this picture with the sun shining down on our boys!

Cookie and Ruby on Sunday.

May 20th, 2013

We hope everyone is had a great weekend. I hate asking for more help but it’s only because of help from others that we are able to do what we do.

The vet is coming out today and we need help with:

– examine/ultrasound Amy and Ariel.

– examine Solace.  He seems to feel ok but there is an odor coming from his nose which may indicate infection.  The vet said he man need x-rays.

– Princess needs both front feet x-rayed.

– We need to resupply some medications (Banamine, SMZ’s, etc.)

– We will need funds to have Stetson gelded when he is ready. Vet will be checking him again today. He’s doing well.

– We need a lot of flymasks in sizes mini, horse and Arabian. Several of the ones we have are just plain worn out and between the flies, lime rock road dust, no-see-um’s and blowing sand we use a lot. We try to have 2 on hand for most horses – one to wear while the other gets cleaned.

– Flyspray & flytraps

– We’re going to need hay by the end of the week.

Donations can be made via PayPal to Theresa or via various ways through our “Donate” page at www.bhfer.org/donate.  The vet’s office can be called directly at 352-237-6151.

I’ll try to post pictures with an update from the weekend and today later this afternoon. It’s already very busy here but I had to take a minute to reach out for help.  Thank you all – have a blessed day!

Theresa

March 18th, 2013

Congratulations!

CONGRATULATIONS to Kathy S.!

The beautiful “Shoofly” made from Solace’s hair is yours!!

And many thanks to everyone that participated in the Hay Game!

And many thanks to Valerie
and Lisa – http://www.crazy4ponytails.com/

This is yesterday’s update:  Solace napping in the sun after breakfast.  He’s doing great.

He has a job he seems to really take pride in – watching over his little herd of mini mares!

Amy has come to love human attention.  Ariel is much better.  Adora is still adorable!

We got the mini mare that I was worried coyotes would get!  We were told she doesn’t know human touch and doesn’t lead.  She’s a cute girl looking ready to foal soon.  I think we will call her Twinkle!  Bob ran into a neighbor at the feet store this evening and he said he has killed 4 coyotes in the last week.  He breeds Beagles for hunting dogs.  The momma dog went out with her 2 pups one evening and the pups came back – she likely gave herself so her pups could run back home.  So sad.  I’m so glad Twinkle is here and a bit more protected from the coyotes.  Her feet were horribly long – she had a hooficure which went ok.  She has got to feel better now that her feet are done.

Will try to stick her tomorrow to see how tall she us.  I have no idea how old she is.  I do think she has had some handling though – either that or she is a fast learner willing to trust.

Dr. Porter will be out next week to do Sisco’s next chemo treatment.

This is from today: LAST DAY TO BID! Don’t forget the horse hair bracelet auction off!  This one is made from Gentleman’s hair!  It was made by Lisa Austin of Crazy4ponytails.  CURRENT BID: $180! Bid increments: $5 Auction ends: 3-15-13.

We need to try to finish up the hay game – will need to get the hay mid next week. I think we are down to needing somewhere in the $500 range.  Remember that for every $20 donation you make towards the hay, you will get one entry to win a nice “Shoofly” made from Solace’s hair!!  We appreciate every little amount you can spare!  UPDATE: We really need to get this hay – we are doubling the chances!  If you have already donated for a chance for $20 you’ll get 2 chances.  From here on out for every $10 you’ll get 1 chance!

Please share the info on the auction and the hay game!  Thank you all for caring – have a beautiful and blessed day!

Sincerely,
Theresa

Penny helping this am – she’s a donkey that prefers flavored water! Hay – that’s my Propel!

Genesis thinking about going out into the main paddock for a supervised walk this am. He wasn’t too sure at first.

We have been worried terribly about a pregnant mini mare that looks to be due anytime. She has just been living out in a pasture – her feet need done, she needs vaccinations, vetting, dental, etc. There are so many coyotes this year – my fear is they will get her and her baby when she goes down to foal. Well, some good news!
Today, someone donated funds needed for her first month’s care!

This girl is going to need hay too! Please help our current hay fundraiser! We are down from needing $1130 to $700 for the hay purchase! For every $20 donated towards our hay purchase, you will get one entry into a drawing for a beautiful “shoofly” that can be attached to a key chain, purse, etc. that is made by Lisa Austin of Crazy4ponytales from Solace’s hair! So, if you donate $100, you will get 5 chances to win! We will keep going until we meet our goal of $1130 (2 tons of hay).

If anyone would like to help it would be greatly appreciated. Donations are tax deductible and no amount is too small. Donations can be made via our website “Donate” page at https://www.bhfer.org/oldsite/donate.html. Our PayPal address is theresa@beautysequinerescue.org. If you are donating for the hay game please annotate that this is for the “Hay Game” so that we can keep track of our entries!

We will keep going until we meet our goal of $1130 (2 tons of hay). We have enough hay to get us through mid next week.

If anyone would like to help it would be greatly appreciated. Donations are tax deductible and no amount is too small.  Donations can be made via our website “Donate” page at www.bhfer.org/donate. Solace wasn’t feeling very well this morning. Blood tests didn’t show anything – the results were all good. His temp was up much of the day but is finally down to normal. We will keep monitoring him and if he gets worse I’m to call Dr. Ryan. Please keep him in your prayers.

This is Sisco. He had a tumor removed a few weeks ago – squamous cell carcinoma.  The site was injected with cisplatin and cream is being applied daily – he is doing great.  He will need another chemo treatment on about 4 weeks.  If we win first place in the Elder Ford of Tampa contest it would cover the cost of his next treatment.  Please vote for us and ask friends and family to also vote.  Thank you!

PLEASE help us to find a good home for Sunset – she really needs to go somewhere with plenty of shade ASAP. Sunset is a 25 yr young former PMU mare who is in need of a forever home. She has a wonderful, sweet personality. She needs to go somewhere cooler or with plenty of shade as she struggles in the heat – have very little shade. If you are interested in adopting Sunset please e-mail Melissa at bhfer.melissa. Adoption fee will be waived to approved home.

The first bracelet, made by Lisa Austin of Crazy4ponytails, is made from the hair of Solace!  The minimum bid was $40 and bidding increments are $5. B idding will end 3-3-13!  All proceeds will go directly to helping the horses!  Current Bid: $200!!

We are still in need of Arabian, Horse, and Large Horse size double Velcro flymasks. And we need milk thistle – many of the horses here get this. We usually get this from The Healing Barn – if you would like to help with this please let me know. Ideally, we would order the 11 lb. container.  And usually, when ordered and being shipped to us, a discount is given.

Calling it a day a bit early – going to meet a mare (possibly pregnant) in the morning that I’m told will be fed to big cats if a home isn’t found. Thank you all for your continued support – have a great night!

Sincerely,
Theresa
