Two Aged Minis in Need, Match Game & Eagle Rare Life

I had hoped to send out a more detailed update, but as always, something arises and I am unable to do so, but I need to apprise you of an urgent case involving four mini’s. The owners are elderly – both husband and wife are in the hospital and they can no longer care for their precious horses – a 29 year old stud, a 32 year old mare, and their offspring, a 16 year old mare and a 5 year old stud.
Although we are maxed out and have horses coming back to the rescue, we feel that we simply cannot turn our back on these sweet minis. There is a special urgency regarding the two elderly horses and we have a temporary solution as to where we can put them on the farm, thanks to the help of a supporter. They deserve to live out the remainder of their days, no matter how many that may be, in a loving environment and with proper care. They need coggins, full physicals (including blood work), dentals and hooficures. In order to help them, however, we need sponsors. Please – can anyone help with a one time or recurring monthly donation? We can start with pledges – I will get a cost estimate tomorrow after speaking with the vet. We can’t move forward without help from our village.
The two younger minis are in good shape and also need homes. The 5 year old stud has an issue with a back foot deformity that can be managed. The couple who owns the horses have a son who is willing to oversee the younger ones until a home is found (hopefully soon). They do not have to stay together and we’ve recently been advised that the 5 year old stud may have a home offer. I’d hate to think of the 16 year old mare being left behind, so please, if you may be interested in either of the two younger ones, please contact us and we can put you in touch with the owner’s son.
We also desperately need help placing horses that are ready for adoption – Zahara, Rosita, Baby Ray, Sophie, Tinsel, SeAnna, and others. Kandi and Shaker, two National Show Horse mares,  need placement ASAP –  Kiana will be available after 30 days of training which has been generously sponsored.  Additional information will be sent out about regarding these horses.

So Much to Share and Lots Coming Up!

Sisco, Athena, and Serenity.  A cute little herd.  But Serenity will be going home soon.  She’s has a new human family!  Phil Yarborough has opened his heart and home to this very special girl!

April 17th
Willow was introduced to Peaches yesterday. It’s the first time Willow has had an equine friend in 8 years!

In June 2010 the owner of a TB foal decided he didn’t want the baby – the foal had a large hernia and leg injury.

We brought him to the rescue. He was simply stunning – I named him Armani.

Even as a baby, he has always been a big boy. It turned out that he is a great-great grandson of Secretariat!

We had his hernia repaired and he grew strong. Armani was adopted by Kateri and Dean in Colorado where he is a happy boy that is still growing! Kate Chenery and LeeAnn Ladin (co-wrote Secretariat’s Meadow” visiting with him in August 2011.

April 19th Breakfast!!!

The officer team of the DeLand SR FFA spent the day here and it was simply awesome!  Not everyone could make it here on April 25th to our ASPCA Beauty’s Haven Equine Rescue’s Help a Horse Day & Celebration of Life 2015 so we had our get together today.  We had lots of fun and so much got done – it was great!  I’ve lots of photos to share tomorrow but for now we’re calling it a day!  Thanks Jenna!  You and your team did a great job!

So Much to Update You About! Jan 18th – 21st 2015

Betsy Rose got her acupuncture/TENS treatment last Saturday. Some of her lab work came back, but not all, and Dr. Julia pulled another test (thyroid) this past Monday but we likely won’t have those results back until next week. From what we do know, Betsy’s glucose is high and her kidneys are a little stressed. But her CBC results were good. Once we get additional test results back, we will know more. She wouldn’t lay down in her stall so we stripped it and switched the shavings to pelleted bedding but she still won’t lay down in there. But in the mornings, she goes right out after breakfast and naps in the sun. She gets a hooficure tomorrow. Please keep her in your prayers.

Athena got an acupuncture treatment last Saturday too.

Athena is so pretty. We’re not sure what breed she is but there’s some draft in there. Her hock boots should be here tomorrow, I hope.

Amber and Baby Ray impatiently waiting on their hay to be unloaded from the trailer a few days ago. We have to make another hay run, hopefully, tomorrow. With the cold temps, we are going through a bit more. It’s already below freezing here tonight.

Amber is such a sweet little mare – she really would make someone a very nice horse. She’s a TWH looking for a forever home.

Baby Ray being, well, Baby Ray. I wasn’t sure how many blankets I’d find torn to shreds this morning. But I guess everyone realized how much they need them and all were intact.

Matilda proudly wears Gentleman’s blanket. I know he wouldn’t mind. I’ll never stop missing him. Dr. Mangan will be here tomorrow to check out Matilda’s eyes.

Tomorrow is a big day – Dr’s. Mangan and Simonson will be here and two farriers will be coming too. Everyone here is bundled up. We’re so blessed that the the horses all have a blanket. This is Sisco.

Guess who got their tail braided on Monday?

We are so blessed to have a dependable truck. The tractor is in the shop and we sure do miss it. It makes for more work when we don’t have it. But at least we found a local place to repair it. The picked it up last Friday and we are waiting on a cost estimate.

February 20th

Aalayeh Belle – when I look at her I see Momma Sue through and through. She came up to have a knee injury checked while Dr. Julia was here.

Matilda seemed so proud of herself today when Dr. Mangan examined both of her eyes and she even allowed him to flush her tear duct without any sedation! The good news is that the issue in her right eye is believed to be Immune-Mediated Keratitis. It is being treated with medication and the cloudiness should improve over the next couple of weeks. The other good news is that her left eye which had tears a lot is fine – it was as suspected – a clogged tear duct. This is something that gets overlooked a lot in horses. When Donovan got here, he had discharge running down both of his eyes that went untreated – there were open sores that flies loved. He has some permanent scars from this. His tear ducts were flushed during his initial exam upon intake and both were clogged. Anyway, Matilda should be fine. Dr. Mangan wants to look at her eyes again in a couple of weeks. The bad news for Matilda, well, there isn’t any!

We are so excited about Daisy’s progress! She’s had two BCG injections now over the past few weeks and we are seeing positive changes around both of her eyes. The tumors have shrunk! She gets oral supplements and a topical applied daily. We are staying positive about her recovery. BELIEVE!

Dr. Mangan also did an examination on Betsy Rose. She’s been blind in her right eye since the day she arrived – it’s totally clouded over. But she’s been startling a bit more lately and we thought having her eyes examined would be a good thing to do. Well, sadly, she is losing vision in her left eye too.

Betsy Rose has polycoria – you can see in the photo it looks like she has two pupils. It’s a very good thing that she’s had time here to get to know her way around. She knows she’s safe here, and loved very much. We’ll put bubble wrap on her if we have to!

“It was a really busy day today – As you know, Dr.’s Mangan and Simonson were here and Laura and Stephanie were here too! They do our hooficures. I’m feeling better but Mommy Theresa’s arm isn’t doing very well. Well, have a good night everyone. Freckles is getting ready to tell Lucy a bedtime story about one of her travel adventures – they do this almost every night. Sweet dreams everyone!” says Betsy Rose.

February 21st

The Bridle Brigade of Levy County came out today – I’m so glad that the weather was better! Lots of horses got some extra attention and some of the chores got done pretty quickly!

We really appreciate Misti and her group taking the time to come and we always enjoy sharing the horses.

Doesn’t Matilda look like she is smiling? In my opinion, we should always take every opportunity we can to help educate the horse owners of tomorrow.

Cookie’s Cancer and the Peanut Festival

October 4th – 5th, 2013

Unfortunately, it appears that the SCC has returned under Cookie’s eye. She needs to go back to the hospital and will likely need another surgery – she may end up losing the eye but it could be worse. And if she does lose her eye, well, most horses adjust well.

Terri and her husband are taking great care of Cookie and Divinity – we appreciate them very much. They have agreed to continue to foster the girls for as long as needed.  This is a true blessing and we can’t thank them enough. Anyone who has visited the rescue, can tell you we have very little shade which is what these two girls need (and each need a stall). Terri is home 24/7 to care for them.

I have to ask for help with another surgery for Cookie. We won’t know how much is needed until she is evaluated but it will be at least $900. If they have to remove the eye, it will be more. If anyone would like to help Cookie, please make a note on your donation that it’s for Cookie. Thanks everyone.

An Update on MANY!

August 4th – 5th, 2013

Some of the horses got much needed baths this past weekend thanks to Wanda Sue Malphurs, her daughter, Martina, and son, Caleb!  Look at the pretty horses!  

Ceri – a really sweet 20 yr old Arabian mare.

Classy – a Sanctuary pony.  She has a permanent trach and front feet issues.

Bella – this is Starbucks mom.  She’s available for adoption.  Very, very sweet girl.

And this is a Clydesdale named Genesis – a Sanctuary horse.  One of his eyes was removed a few months ago and the other has early stage of glaucoma.  The vets say he will likely lose that eye within the next 5 years.  He came to us several months ago with sores on all of his legs.  We were able to get the front ones cleared up.  But the back ones needed some extra attention which Jenny has been diligently giving them and they are much better!  He has a scrotal hernia and a suspected cancer spot that we monitor.  He’s a gentle giant.

Peggy Sue got a hooficure yesterday.  Betsy Rose was happy to give up the sling for awhile.  Peggy Sue is a Sanctuary mini.  She has issues with her back left leg which is basically straight and can’t bend due to an injury years ago when giving birth.  She’s a sweetheart.  We do keep close eye on her.  Sometimes, if she lays on the wrong side, she can’t get up and needs assistance.

Betsy Rose just before being tucked back into the sling last night.  Like me, she was tired!  She stayed out for about 3 hours this yesterday evening.  She hardly coughed any on Monday and her edema is almost gone and her nasal discharge is better too.

We could use some prayers today for Solace, Amy, and Betsy Rose.  Solace had a temp this am and appeared to be trying to choke.  It seems to have cleared and his temp is coming down.  He’s in a stall under fans.  Amy was trying to colic but seems better.  Betsy Rose is coughing some.  It’s too busy here today!

Paso Fino Case Update – Mares and a Colic

February 26th, 2012

It was a very productive day at the Paso farm yesterday. We got a couple mares into the barn and got them settled in.  I called Dr. Joan Gariboldi out to treat one of the mare’s (Maraca) that has been in for a few days that appeared to be trying to colic and she had a slight temperature.  Maraca was oiled but as of this morning she still had not passed any manure.  Pam is on her way to transport Maraca here to the rescue where we can monitor her and have Dr. Joan out again if needed.  Pam is a wonderful transporter and we recommend her without any reservations!

Dr. Joan also vaccinated some of the horses and pulled coggins and did a health certificate.  One of the mares left to go to her new home.  Slowly but surely we are making progress.  I was supposed to go back today for pictures but it’s horrible weather and my bronchitis is worse again.  Here are a few pictures from yesterday.

Red got to play in the round pen yesterday and he loved it! And we enjoyed watching him!

One of the available mares – #10.  Not sure of her age yet. A coggins needs to be pulled on her.  She is an alpha mare.

This is Scarlet.  She’s a very sweet mare estimated to be 6 years old.  Coggins is done.

Maraca is now here for monitoring.  She has passed some poop and seems less stressed.  The weather is still horrible.

Hope to feel better tomorrow.  Calling it a day now.  Two of the studs are being picked up in the morning.  Hopefully the rains will subside long enough for them to load without any problems.  Seeing them go is bittersweet but we are very happy that they will have their own human family.  It’s hard for us not to get attached to each one of them – and we do.

Herd of 38 – Paso Fino Case in the News

A major undertaking – hopefully, financial and other help will come now the story is in the Ocala Star Banner.  We took on a case of 38 Paso Fino horses that had been abandoned and living pretty much feral for a couple of years.  Fourteen of them being studs that lived locked away in dark and dirty stalls.

Paso Case Update

01/29/12

Below are a few pictures from today. Carla went out to feed this afternoon and Jacky and Tres helped – it was a pleasure to meet more people that are willing to help. I went out with hubby to take more hay and I wanted to spend a little time with the horses while hubby did a few minor repairs.

The structures in the back of the horses are not on the property.

The group with the gray mare was much calmer this afternoon.

These two mares stick together much of the time. They are both starting to enjoy touch – at least on their noses and sides of their face. I really enjoy just sitting with them and getting to know them – the time goes by too quickly!

Here are some of the horses a few days ago – the hay they were eating looked like cow hay.

Yesterday they got some very nice hay which they love!

And today we took more hay. The temps are going into the 30’s tonight – I think they will appreciate the hay very much.

Carla has graciously accepted the task of compiling a list of people that would like one or more of the horses – as well as to coordinate volunteers to cover morning and afternoon feed shifts.  Our priority over the weekend was to get hay/grain to the horses, get the studs out of their stalls for awhile so they could get some fresh air and graze while their stalls could be cleaned, to clean waterers, and to make minor repairs to fencing, gates, to put together a core team of volunteers to help to manage the many tasks, etc. Horses will be catalogued over the next few days – please be patient because it won’t be an easy task. These mares out in the paddocks have not been handled in a long, long time.

It’s really a wonderful thing – people coming together to help those that can’t help themselves. These horses appreciate everything done for them and we appreciate everyone helping us to help them – we couldn’t do it without help from others. Where there was little light in many of their eyes only a few days ago – the light is getting brighter each day and it’s such a great feeling and rewarding thing to experience! They will come around and enjoy human touch again. They will find wonderful forever homes. It may take time, patience, and resources – but with help from others we’ll do our best to make it happen. Thank you all!
