Busy day here today – started out blanketing the horses before the rains come. We got blood work results back and Bryce is a mess. Dodger is doing well – he will be ready to go to his new home by the weekend. Serenity isn’t feeling very well today. We’re keeping a close eye on all of them. They are all tucked in with blankets.

Mary’s potential new home didn’t work out – please help us find her a great home. She’s a very sweet 27 year young Arabian mare with no health issues. We need to make room for others.

More prayers please. We went to check on the horses where Serenity came from to make sure they had hay and they do. But we found this little filly with a tummy ache and diarrhea. It took a bit but the owner let her go. The vet is here now. She’s grinding her teeth really bad which means she’s uncomfortable.

I thank God this little girl won’t be out in the freezing cold tonight, colicing.

The rain has arrived. I hope and pray the horses stay under shelters tonight and munch on their hay. The temps are just above freezing. Wee early hours are going to be horrible.

Sincerely,

Theresa

I just got back to the rescue with 2 more – a yearling and a 4 yr old with explosive diarrhea and an eye injury. We believe we have places lined up for these 2 but will be getting their immediate vet needs addressed today and we’ll see whe…n the vet says they can travel. I’ll update on the others – the vet will be here any minute. The remaining ones are not as bad. The baby and the worst are now here and are getting necessary care. Thank you all for our support. I am sorry I have not responded to PM’s or emails but it’s been non-stop.

This is the yearling colt.

This 4 year old gelding has explosive diarrhea and an eye injury. He’s about a 2 on the Henneke scale.

Please pray for the gelding. He has explosive poops today and is showing signs of colic. Still waiting on the vet. It’s a busy time for colics. I’m sitting here with him just talking about how life is going to get better.

Sincerely,

Theresa

This mare had an appointment with the local animal disposal company today – in other words, she was scheduled to be shot. The owner was given our name by another rescue and he called me yesterday afternoon. I then discussed the case with the AC Officer working the case and was told this mare is in bad shape – not even a 1 on the Henneke scale. The owner asked if we can take her – if not, she doesn’t have a chance – she would be shot. There are other horses at the farm but they are not nearly as bad as she is and the County has an active ongoing case on them. Cases like this rip me up – this mare deserves more so I hooked up the trailer last night and brought her back to Beauty’s Haven.

She walked right into the trailer.

This little Appy girl, covered in mud and muck, is very sweet but she’s in rough shape. She is not quite a 1 on the Henneke scale. The kind and unbelieving look she gave me when putting a blanket on her last night broke my heart. Blood work was done. It’s so sad to think that she would have been put down this morning. At least now, she’s got a chance. I am concerned about what she was fed yesterday and we’ll be praying that she doesn’t colic. This mare is going to need quite a bit of rehab. But she is the worst and the others had hay last night. Please keep her in your prayers. It’s going to be a long road to recovery for her – I’m keeping the faith that she can do it.

Serenity’s blood work results have come back and they were what we expected – levels typical of starvation case. Her temp has been up and down but she is drinking and urinating. She’s gone poop a few times. She nibbles on her hay at times – her gut is making quite a few noises. One of my concerns is what she was fed yesterday before we got her – a sudden feeding can be detrimental. Refeeding a starved horse can actually be deadly if not done properly. I just got off the phone with AC and am headed back over to where we picked her up from. It was pitch black there last night and I couldn’t get a good look at the others. I’ll update when I can. It’s going to be another long day.

I can’t thank all of you enough for your support – please keep Serenity in your prayers. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Theresa

Dr. Julia Simonson stopped in yesterday to check on a few of the horses and to go over the protocol of supplements for Bella’s coughing. Bella is doing better now that she is at a foster home with Kim Furse. I’m sure that all the dust that blows around here contibuted greatly to Bella’s issues.

Wow – I just saw this photo for the first time! This is Deborah Hill taking some photos of the "kids."

The little ones are so much fun to watch! That’s CaryLou out in the lead!

Wally is quite a character – he pretends that he doesn’t like humans very much – but he really does.

Oh – and Indy! Here’s Indy soaking up some sun too!

Peggy Sue got a hooficure today – she has to be trimmed in the sling.

Roxy and Kathy Breakall on poop patrol yesterday. The golf cart that pulls the poop spreader was in the shop – we sure do miss it when it’s broken.

Pistol is a hoot! I would never be surprised to find him on the porch knocking on the door for some attention.

Katie playing with Pistol today – he’s calmed down a lot. That’s Barbara and Santana and Bronson in the background.

Santana and his little buddy, Bronson. Santana is looking for a forever home. He is pasture sound only – he does have navicular. He’s a happy horse – very sweet.

"Mommy Theresa I know you’re in there! Can we have some treats, please?" Little Bronson is growing up – he’s a sweetheart too. He’s also ready for a forever home.

I know I say this all the time, but Santana is just a sweet and magnificent horse! He’s so patient with the little ones. Lily walks under him to get to the other side sometimes. LOL

Mollie is an Arabian filly with a great mind. It’s hard to believe that two months ago, she was at death’s door.

She has a huge love for life. When she puts her mind to something, she will give it her all. And she’s honest.

She does have a bit of Brio in her but it’s beautiful and she will make someone a wonderful horse.

And last, but not least tonight, Betsy Rose taking in some sunshine.

Thank you all so very much for your love and support.

Sincerely,

Theresa

January 22nd

I’m in a rush, as usual, but I wanted to say GOOD MORNING to everyone! I have many things to update and share but have to get the horses fed and some things done. You are ALL amazing – truly. It takes a village to make this rescue a success – we have the best village anyone could possibly hope for and we are very blessed!

Here’s momma Daisy with Blodwyn.

Betsy Rose got her treatment by Dr. Julia yesterday. She’s feeling better. She actually did a weak double barrel kick when one of the acupuncture needles went in! She always feels and moves better after the treatments.

We have a little pony that came in a couple of days ago. He had been on a waiting list for months. Dr. Julia also worked on him. He has issues in his backend. Possibly a fracture in the pelvic area. He used to be a pony that went in circles all day long at fairs.

This is Mary and Kamanchee. Mary has a potential adopter visiting this weekend. They are both very sweet.

January 23rd

Kathy Breakall is here for a few days. The horses will just get more pampering!

January 25th

A most beautiful day at the farm! We needed this nice weather really badly!

Jenny got to visit today. We sure miss her but I am glad she is able to come for a day or two every few weeks.

Santana is such a great horse. He makes friends so easily.

Matilda is such a love too.

Pistol has calmed down significantly since his castration. He is looking for a forever home.

Molly is also ready for a home. She is going to be stunning once she sheds out!

Had a great dinner date last night for our anniversary! Dinner, dancing, and pool! It’s rare that Bob and I get off the farm at the same time.

Magnum is doing very well. I started a little ground work last week. He’s a good boy. Here is a link to a very short video.

Thank you all so very much for your love and support – have a great week, everyone!

BEAUTY’S HAVEN’S LIFELINE

‘I felt helpless as I pictured Mollie lying alone on the ground, knowing that if she had died before we arrived,
it may have been because of our truck and I would never have forgiven myself…’

January 18th:

We had lots of visitors yesterday! This was CJ with his new family getting ready to leave.

Nokkie and CJ last evening. They are BFF already! CJ is a precious soul that has not always been in good hands. He can be a bit shy of strangers. But with Elizabeth and Bri, well, since the day they came out to meet him, it was like he’d known them forever. We had his feet done today so they could experience how to best handle him because of his knee. He’s polite and there isn’t a mean bone in his body. He just gets tense when you ask him to pick up and bend the bad knee, like he’s expecting pain. But we are careful and have learned how to get it done. It meant a lot to me that Elizabeth and Bri made time to come while the farrier was here to be part of it – it takes at least 3 people. Congrats everyone involved!

January 19th:

Some of our fuzzy babies this morning after breakfast.

This is Mary – a very, very sweet 27 yr young Arabian mare. We thought we had a home for her but it fell through. Would anyone like to adopt this beautiful girl? If so, please PM me. Serious inquiries only please.

Not a great picture but Mollie is doing great. When she sheds out, she is going to be stunning!

“Pistol! Now look what you’ve done! You’ve stirred up so much fuss Cookie opened her window to see what’s going on! Now stop – let’s go play with the other boys!" Pistol is enjoying his new "freedom" and friends his size!

Santana is such an awesome horse. I bent down today to sit and watch the boys play. Next thing I knew, there was a horse hanging out over my shoulder.

Matilda is always so photogenic!

Katherine DiSandro and her family took Betsy Rose out for a walk today down to the far end of the property and Betsy Rose LOVED the field trip! Look at her backside filling in! She is a bit stiff again and seemed a little uncomfortable today. We’d like to have Dr. Julia out to work on her again this week. Would anyone like to help make that happen?

Betsy Rose has come such a long way but is still fragile. Before coming to us her body had fed upon itself until there simply wasn’t anything left to give – her recovery still leaves me in awe. Those first few days/nights on the ground and in and out of the sling were very difficult on all of us. Once she was able to stay in the sling for longer periods of time, it helped us all. That sling was her lifeline for months. I didn’t want to let her out of my sight. I’ll never forget that 2 month mark when she walked on her own and grazed for the first time! Freckles still watches over her but we can’t let Freckles out too much because the dogs will hijack her. We’re so proud of Betsy Rose – she’s the little mare that believed with all her heart and soul that she could overcome all odds – and she did. Her case goes to court again this Tuesday.

There’s no place like home. That’s Betsy Rose on the left with Mollie on the right – she followed her down the entire fenceline.

Baby Ray made new human friends today. He’s doing well!

Good night everyone! I have to call it a day soon. There is much going on tomorrow. I’m still trying to get rid of whatever has had me down but I am better. Thank you all for your continued support and for caring!

Sincerely,

Theresa

Maltilda’s Special Day

Dr. Julia Simonson worked on Matilda, an older Mammoth Mule, today. Matilda LOVED every minute of it! Matilda got chiropractic, acupuncture, electrical stimulation, and massage today.

After her session was finished, she did not want to move – she was so relaxed and looked so peaceful.

Dr. Julia and I were sitting on the bench at the front of the barn, talking, when Matilda finally did move. She turned around and looked as us and made the cutest little face as if to say “Thank you!”

January 11th

Dr. Julia checking Pistol today with help from Katherine and Elizabeth. He’s doing great. Yes, it took three people. LOL! He lives up to his name!

Bronson was gelded today and was a good patient.  Katherine and Elizabeth assisted Dr. Julia. Katherine wants to be a vet – she truly appreciates all the hands on experience she gets here. Experiences are so valuable, IMO. It’s an honor to have students like Katherine participate and volunteer! Elizabeth and her daughter, Bri, came out to meet CJ and helped out, too, while they were here. Paul and Roxy stayed busy with many other things that needed to be done. Thanks to everyone!

CJ has a home! Elizabeth and Bri spent some time grooming and handling him and they all just clicked! CJ is usually shy of new faces. But not today! He totally enjoyed the time they spent with him. He will be a pasture pal to one other horse they have. A pretty pasture ornament to love on and watch. I’m very happy for him!

January 12th

I lost my cell phone yesterday, but thankfully, found it today. I cannot believe that it survived the storms!

Solace and Barbara today.

January 13th

Betsy Rose getting her hooficure.

Pistol is recovering nicely from his castration.

It was a busy day today and, unfortunately, I’m not feeling well – sore throat, congestion, earache, etc. I’m headed to bed very soon. Tomorrow is another busy day. Dr. Julia will be back to examine Solace and to review his blood work results. Bronson and Pistol are doing very well. Betsy Rose is moving better. Dr. Julia worked on her last week, she got a hooficure today, and tomorrow, Dr. Bess Darrow of Tune Ups Veterinary Equine Dentistry and Services will be here to check her and Solace and to do some others. Just wanted to say good night to everyone – I wish you all sweet dreams. We’ll have a new fundraiser starting tomorrow – we need help with these vet, farrier, and dental expenses.

January 15th

My day started out by spending some time with this grand old 34 year old mare – brushing her, giving her treats and hay, just talking to her. She was crippled and was no longer able to get around – she was tired. Dr. Tenant examined her yesterday and it was decided that the kindest, most humane and loving thing to do for the mare was to help her cross Rainbow Bridge. I stayed with her for awhile after she crossed. I bet there were many stories she could have shared. Run pain free, Chancey!

Dr. Bess Darrow of Tune Ups Veterinary Equine Dentistry and Services worked on a few of the horses yesterday. This is Santana. He was a good boy – he’s good about everything.

CaryLou, Harvey, Bronson, and Wally after getting full tummies.

Aaleyah Belle got her teeth done too. She was on the list the last time Dr. Bess came but she didn’t want to behave. She was good yesterday though. It’s hard to believe she’s 5 years old now. Here is a link to her diary – we picked up Aaleyah and her Mom on the day she was born – the very day that Eight Belles died. I named her IHO of Eight Belles. Aaleyah and her mom, Momma Sue, were going to be shot because Aaleyah had been born with a wry nose. https://bhfer.org/oldSite/old/aaleyah_diary1.htm

Magnum was a good boy for Dr. Bess too. He’s a bit older than we thought. He’s a little shy with new people. I was very happy that Lindsey was able to come and help Dr. Bess yesterday. Thanks Lindsey!

Have a wonderful Thursday, everyone!

Sincerely,
Theresa

January 7th – 10th, 2014 Update

Betsy Rose got “the works” on Tuesday from Dr. Julia Simonson. Betsy Rose is always the perfect patient. Below is a video of part of her treatment – just watch those needles move! Her back right hip area was pretty stiff. I’ll be so glad when the cold is gone – its really hard on the older horses.

Dr. Julia worked on Betsy Rose in the much warmer feed room.

Betsy Rose having a little discussion with Dr. Julia. Dr. Julia adores this little mare – we all do!

Gentleman also got a massage and an acupuncture treatment which he really needed and enjoyed.

This is little Lily greeting Katherine. Welcome back Katherine and thank you for your volunteer time!

Mollie and Victoria are good friends.

Magnum and Me!

Big horses Magic, Santana, and Magnum. Many of the mini’s. And Bronson too.

CJ HAS AN APPOINTMENT TO MEET A POTENTIAL ADOPTIVE HUMAN ON SATURDAY! I’m so excited! He would be a pasture pal to another horse and he would be loved and cared for!

Pistol waking up from his “procedure” today.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

January 6th, 2014

Betsy Rose taking a stroll today with Karen. The cold weather is not being kind to the older ones. Dr. Julia Simonson will be here in the morning to work on Betsy Rose – she’s having quite a time with her right side and hips. She will get acupuncture/chiro/massage. We would also like Dr. Julia to work on Gentleman. Betsy Rose’s expense is covered – would anyone like to pledge to help with the expense for Gentleman’s treatment?

Mollie has really had a growth spurt! I had to let out her belly straps at least 2 1/2″ this evening!

Gentleman (Percheron) and Matilda (Mammoth Mule). Two of our “Old Ones” that are loved, dearly loved. Dr. Julia will be working on Matilda too.

It’s hard to believe that yesterday was so warm and today is so cold. When you see me without a jacket, you now it’s really warm.

Baby Ray has settled back in nicely – it’s like he never even left. He’s just as sweet as ever. Dr. Julia will be checking him tomorrow too. It’s going to be busy! Cold and busy!

Fiona greeted me with a nose kiss yesterday. I stop in and visit with her when I can.

I’d like to apologize to anyone that I owe a PM or email to – I’m behind on everything in my life. I haven’t been in the office much. I’ll try to get back in the office tomorrow to get some work done. Have a good night – stay warm! This is Victoria and Mollie.

Sincerely,

Theresa
