Just a quick update on Betsy Rose! She had a surprise visitor today – Ola came to see her and give her a hooficure! Yesterday’s acupuncture/chiropractic treatment really helped and that, combined with today’s hooficure, has made her much more comfortable. She’s walking much better and the soreness in her hip/leg is better. She now wants to take me for walks. Better is always good.

Betsy Rose is still fragile and will be for quite awhile. Each day she is with us is a blessing. She’s getting the best of combined medicine/treatment and is making progress. What is in the best interest of each horse, quality of life, together with the horse’s attitude, all play a factor in our decision making process. Tests, diagnostics, consultations, etc. are done – we don’t make decisions on a whim.

Betsy Rose’s body had been robbed of everything – cannibalizing itself to survive. But nobody could take away her love for life and her will to survive. Betsy Rose NEVER gave up and she has defied all odds. And no matter how long God gives us with her, she knows she is loved. Thank you all for believing in her and for helping us to help her.

Betsy Rose and her hooficure today. Yes, she is still thin.

But look at how thin she was in the beginning.

"CaryLou here! I get to be the poster child for all of us horses! Please help Mommy Theresa to take care of us horses by making a donation when you can. Donations can be made different ways – if you go to our website at www.bhfer.org you can see them – we so very much appreciate all of you!"

September 30th – October 1st, 2013

Monday:
When Dr. Lugo first examined Betsy Rose yesterday, he feared she had fractured something. We were all happy when x-rays indicated there are no fractures. An ultrasound was done but showed no issues – that made us even more happy! She definitely has an issue in her back left – she may have strained herself getting up after laying down. We are to continue doing what we are doing – stall rest, some hand grazing, heat, massage, etc. Dr. Julia will be here tomorrow to do acupuncture. Betsy Rose did seem more comfortable today and she did put more weight on her back leg. She really is very fragile and will be for quite some time. You can see the area of injury that was shaved for the ultrasound.

Dr. Lugo examines Betsy Rose. She has been having a lot of problems with her back left hip/leg. We wanted to make sure nothing was fractured and that there was no major tear of any kind. She’s always a good girl.

Tammie was here the last couple of days and got to experience quite a bit of Betsy Rose. Thanks so much Tammie, for all of your help!

“Mommy Theresa, are we done yet? I’m trying to be a good patient but I’d rather be out grazing and all of this bending and twisting is no fun. I promise I won’t chase Lucy!”

Tuesday:
Betsy Rose was very happy to have visitors this evening. She got a LOT of extra attention! She loves introducing her friends to people. Sometimes she lets Freckles do the introductions but this evening she wanted to do them herself. She pretty much gets what she wants.

Betsy Rose Loves Visitors

We had x-rays done of Bouie’s front feet yesterday. He foundered last year and had slight rotation. He recently started having trouble again. Yesterday’s x-rays indicated that he has rotated more in his front right but Dr. Lugo feels that with corrective trimming, Bouie will be comfortable. The x-rays were worth every penny!

The raffle for the Betsy Rose artwork is over! We are going to wait until the end of the week as a number of checks will be arriving via snail mail. Once we make sure that the name of everyone who has participated is in the hat, a winner will be drawn and announced.

Thank you all so much for your love and support!

Sweet little Lucy wanted to go out and explore in the big paddock today. She’s so cute! Lucy has Big Head Disease aka Bran Disease.  But we all love Lucy!

Beautiful Bella has developed breathing issues. She’s being treated by Dr. Julia. She needs to find a good home – the longer she is here by this lime rock road the worse she will get. I know, believe me, I know. The lime rock dust is horrible and a large part of the reason I get respiratory issues.

Today was hooficure day! We have many more hooficures needed – would anyone like to help cover this expense? No amount is too small! Our PayPal address is Theresa. Donations are tax deductible and can also be made via our website at https://www.bhfer.org. All donations are very much appreciated!

It’s been a long day and I’m really looking forward to bed. I’ll post pictures from today and provide a detailed update after feeding in the am.

Some not so good news for Bouie.  Some not so bad news for Betsy – whew! Tammie made it down to volunteer for a couple of days and was a big help today! Here she is with Betsy Rose letting her graze for bit.

September 26th – 27th, 2013

It was a very busy day here yesterday. Dr. Julia came to check out Bella (she had breathing issues) and to check on Betsy Rose. Betsy Rose has strained a ligament in her back left. She’s on stall rest for awhile with limited hand grazing. I feel bad for her but she takes it all in stride – she’s a tough little girl.

This was Betsy Rose being checked out yesterday by Dr. Julia. Stall rest for awhile – limited hand grazing. Going to have to get her more toys for her suite.

Dr. Bess (Tune Ups Veterinary Equine Dentistry and Services) came and worked on a few horses. How would you like to have to eat your meals with your top razor sharp tooth piercing your tongue and putting a hole in your lower jaw? This was just one of many issues Vegas had (this is the horse that lived with Chance).

How about this one? This is more than a year’s worth of neglect. You should NOT have a horse if you can’t take proper are of it (IMO)! Seriously, how would you like to have to try to graze and chew with teeth like this?

Have to slip this one in of my little Popper. She’s hilarious! We have two Boston Terrier’s – Popper and Trixie. They really are great entertainment.

Fabio was here this morning and even Betsy Rose got a hooficure – very gently, of course. Her back leg is still bothering her, but it seemed a little better today. I actually managed to get out and do some work today for a bit. Still trying to get over this round of pneumonia.

Bonnie letting Betsy Rose graze a bit today.

Daniele, Trisha Kelly Jones and Sherry-Kenny Luzader taking care of chores today. Extra hands are always good!

Betsy Rose opening a present today. She LOVES presents!

Betsy Rose really loves nosing through her packages. She’s so cute and appreciative of everything. She’s so expressive!

This is my very special blanket that was made just for me with a lot of love in honor of Schoep – a very special dog. Thank you Stop Animal Cruelty Worldwide!”

“I really love my blanket! Here are some pictures of me sharing it with my friends. They all agree it’s very soft!”

“What do you think Freckles – do you like it? Let’s invite the others to see what they think!”

“I think they LOVE it!”

“Do y’all know how lucky we are? I wish all animals could feel as loved as I do. I dreamed about being this loved and cared for and I prayed and I never stopped believing. I have a big family now that really cares about me! BELIEVE!!”

Betsy Rose has a new friend that arrived today! It was Beanie Secretariat!

“Lucy, really? Come on let’s go try to get into the feed room while nobody is looking! I know you’re always sticking your nose into the feed room door when a human opens it. There’s a lot of goodies in there – we’re too cute to get into real trouble! Mommy Theresa will just take more pictures and then give us a good talking to while she’s scratching our butt. It’ll be fun!”

A video of CaryLou and his ball. I think the ball actually won!

Daisy had another surgery this week. The tumor above her right eye continues to grow. The tumors around her left eye are no worse. Dr. Hughes is trying a different chemo treatment. It’s not looking good at this point but we haven’t given up. Daisy is in good spirits and can see out of both eyes. Boo is doing fantastic! Please keep Daisy in your prayers.

This is the portrait of CaryLou and his momma! It’s available through our online store at . The artist is Shannon Mordue!

God Bless and Thank You!

Have a great weekend, Everyone!

September 23rd – 25th, 2013

Lake Beauty’s Haven!  The sand bags that were put down last week – washed away yesterday.  I have never seen so much rain accumulate so quickly!  We were under generator power and had all the babies tucked in with Betsy Rose and Lucy.  The lightning was horrible.  Erosion?  I don’t want to talk about it. Not complaining, it could be worse.  Everyone is safe.

Gentleman is doing very well considering he’s 30+ years young.  Some days, he moves better than others, but don’t we all? He’s a happy horse. And he is loved so very much!

Solace is also doing very well.  This was taken yesterday before the horrible storms.  That’s Gentleman’s big butt on the left – they have become very good friends.

Over a year ago, we took on a case of 30+ Paso Fino’s that had pretty much been living feral for almost 3 years. This is Laila – one of the mares. When we rescued her, she was an emotional wreck that was full of nervous energy. When she’d swish her tail, she would move forward as though something was spooking her. Well, at the time, we didn’t know that inside of the mess of a tail was about 12″ of barb wire. The poor mare – she’d swish her tail and the barb would poke her. Melissa and George have done a great job with her – look at her now!

Dr. Julia examined Betsy Rose last evening as she’s been having an issue with her back left hip/leg/stifle. Sometimes, she doesn’t want to put weight on it. Dr. Julia thinks she’s strained the muscles and may want to do an ultrasound if she is no better in a couple of weeks. She does not think Betsy Rose fractured anything which was her initial concern. She recommends Betsy Rose stay on stall rest, with some hand walking, and acupuncture/massage – she was back this morning to do acupuncture. Since Betsy Rose is still very fragile in many ways, please continue to keep her in your prayers.

Many of you may know who Schoep and John are, but you may not be aware of the organization, Stop Animal Cruelty Worldwide. They help animals in need and they have a Facebook page and a website – . They made a beautiful blanket especially for Betsy Rose in honor of Schoep. I call it her “comfort blanket”. It’s one of a kind and very special, just like Betsy Rose. I will post more photos of it in an album tomorrow – Betsy Rose has some things to say about it and she wants to share. Many thanks to Pamela Thompson and everyone at SACW!

Tiffany Redmon did a beautiful drawing of Betsy Rose. “Mommy Theresa that looks like ME!” Betsy is so proud of it! It is hanging on her wall along with a picture of Cloud the Stallion.

And now a long awaited story that I have wanted to share about Betsy’s introduction to Beanie Barbaro:

“Betsy Rose and Freckles, we have a new visitor who would like to meet you.”

“Who is it, Mommy Theresa?”

“Hello Betsy Rose! And this must be your best friend, Freckles. I have heard so much about you. My name is Beanie Barbaro and I have been traveling throughout the United States meeting very special horses like you.”

“I am so happy to meet you, Beanie Barbaro. What a very pretty name.”

“I was named after one of the greatest racehorses ever! His name was Barbaro – he won the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May, 2006. He was so very fast and ran like the wind.”

“Wow, Beanie Barbaro, he sounds like such a special horse!”

“Barbaro was indeed very special, Betsy Rose. Sadly, he broke his leg in his next race and spent many months in the hospital. Barbaro had a wonderful doctor who cared for him. His name was Dr. Richardson.”

“Is Barbaro all better now, Beanie Barbaro?”

“No Betsy Rose, Barbaro got a very bad disease called Laminitis which caused him much pain. He is at Rainbow Bridge now, watching down upon you and all of the other horses throughout the world. Although, he is on the other side of Rainbow Bridge, he is still helping horses everywhere. More research is being done to help prevent and treat laminitis so other horses don’t suffer.”

“That is so sad, Beanie Barbaro. I would have loved to meet Barbaro.”

“Barbaro is here in spirit, Betsy Rose. He is all around you, and together with your Mommy Theresa, maybe he has something to do with making you all better.”

“I am so happy, that you have decided to visit Beauty’s Haven, Beanie Barbaro. I can’t wait to introduce you to all the other horses that live here!”

“I am happy to be here, Betsy Rose. I have heard that this is, indeed, a very special place…

Betsy Rose and friends spending some time with Beanie Barbaro who visited for a few days. Oh the stories they told!!!

Betsy Rose helps us to believe!

God bless and thank you! Have a great evening, everyone!

September 21st, 2013

Betsy Rose visiting with Jane and Steve yesterday.  Betsy Rose is loved by everyone! And she loves the attention!

CaryLou, Harvey, and Wally enjoy visitors too. They look like little powder puffs with their fuzzy coats.

Penny isn’t a baby anymore! She won’t be as big as her momma. She was singing this am to a donkey at the neighbors. It was so cute. Her bray has gotten so much stronger and louder!

Penny demanding all of the attention yesterday. That’s her mom, Penelope, trying to take a siesta. Penny loves to take the humans water bottles, cell phones, etc.

Nadia is getting quite a tummy on her. I think we’re going to have her palpated. We don’t know about her history other than she had a baby pulled from her a couple of months before she came to us. She’s a really nice 16 yr old Warmblood.

Gracie smiles for the camera.

Bouie makes faces. LOL

Nevada has the kindest eyes. He looks great in pink too.

Nevada will be leaving for his new home tomorrow. He will be less than 15 minutes away. It’s always bittersweet when they leave but this is what we do. They all deserve a good forever home.

Have a great Sunday, Everyone!

Theresa

09/19/15 Update

I received a call concerning a horse on Wednesday night – it was in a remote part of the county and too late for me to go alone. I called the County and they said they would have a Deputy check it out. I didn’t hear anything back from them. This morning I woke up thinking about the horse and felt it was likely nobody went out so off I went. I got to the address and couldn’t get in the gate which was a good distance from the house. There were dogs and no humans in sight. None of the phone numbers for that address worked. I heard a horse whinny but couldn’t see it. I won’t go into the details of how I finally got in, but I did – it was very frustrating. And I’ll tell you, that what I saw once I got on the property and behind the house was sickening. But I had to focus on the immediate needs of the horse.

The owner called the horse Scant. When I got to him, he was down eating sand – he had been down for a couple of days. He tried to go sternum (he demonstrated signs of colic) and I found three good size limbs under him – it had to have been uncomfortable. I pulled the limbs out and put hay under and around him. I rubbed him and promised him help was on the way. His water bucket was out of reach so I got another bucket and offered him water. He drank and was very thankful. It hurt my heart, very much to see him in his condition. I talked to him about life in general and how beautiful he was while waiting for the vet to arrive. As I looked around me there were scattered bones. And there were tree stumps the horse could have easily impaled himself on in his obvious struggles to get up – one very close to him. I turned a bucket over to cover it.

Dr. Ryan got there and ran fluids – he did everything possible – we tried but it just wasn’t meant to be. His back right leg would not work – there was likely a fracture and there was a good size open stifle injury from a couple of weeks ago. He was very thin (BS 1.5) and very uncomfortable. He was at least 20 years young, his heart rate was high (even after meds) and he likely had quite a bit of sand in him. It’s hard to lose any horse – he was a beautiful Arabian gelding. We all know Arabians are near and dear to my heart. He’s now running, pain free, on the other side of Rainbow Bridge. God bless him.

When he crossed, he wasn’t alone. I assured him it would be ok and that where he was going would be a beautiful place with green grass, fresh water, and there would be only good things and love. And I sat with him for several minutes after and the tears came. I just want to understand – how could humans allow this to happen?

A skull and other bones were scattered on the ground. Proof that other life has been lost. Now I ask for prayers for the other animals there.

Wednesday evening update: I did follow up with the authorities and there is an open investigation. The owner has 30 days to rehome the animals or make conditions better and demonstrate that he is providing proper care for them. There was at least one dog, a pony, several cows, pigs, ducks and other birds. Only 3 of the cows I saw were on grass and they looked fairly good. Everything else lived on sand and didn’t look very well. The owner knows he can reach out to us for help and to help rehome any of the animals.

I am calling the Arabian gelding “Eilian”. Scant was a horrible name, IMO. My heart is as heavy as it was yesterday. The only comfort I can find is knowing he is now in a better place running with the Heavenly herd.

Thank you all for caring.

Sincerely,

Theresa

On Friday morning, we discovered Morgan colicing. She had pooped twice but was pretty uncomfortable even with medications. The vet arrived and set up an IV catheter for us to run fluids.

Morgan had a quiet night after getting more meds and fluids. She went poop twice but no oil yet. She slurped up her soupy mash on Saturday morning.

Morgan and Brittany, Pamela Zarem’s daughter, recently going for a walk. Pam was fostering Morgan for a bit. Morgan doesn’t get nearly the attention here that she did at Pam’s. She’s a good girl and deserves her forever home.

Betsy Rose is still adorable!

Oh my! Lucy came over for scratches and Betsy Rose hopped in the air and ran her off! It was like the babies doing the cricket dance – all four feet off the ground at once! Poor Lucy.

"Y’all stay right there. I’m going to graze for a few minutes and wander over to the feed room to see if there’s anyone in there that will give me a treat, ok? I’ll be right back."

View of the "front yard".

Mini’s everywhere. LOL

And please don’t forget to buy your subscription to Equine Wellness Magazine this month – a portion of will help the horses here!

Warning – there are graphic photos of her injuries in this update starting with the 3rd photo below.

I thought I would share a couple recent pictures of Spirit – a blind mare that we adopted out in November last year. Spirit settled well into her adoptive home where there is another blind mare.

Spirit grazing with her friend in her adoptive home. Their human mom loves them very much.

Some history – We had received a call about a herd of horses that needed help. We went to see them – mares, babies, and studs of all ages living together that were pretty much unhandled. The owner was trying to sell them – he walked the pasture with us to show us the horses and I noticed one horse he skipped over. I asked about her and he said “You wouldn’t want her – she can’t see very well.” So, I had to go meet her. This picture of Spirit was taken after we cleaned her up the day we brought her to the rescue.

What I found was appalling – the mare had open wounds from nose to tail. There was a huge gaping wound in her chest as if she had impaled herself on something and there was another horrible injury to her face.

She had bite and kick marks all over. Her life had to have been a dark and scary living hell.

I asked how long she’d had the face and chest injuries and was told something must have happened overnight – she wasn’t like that yesterday. Yeah, right. I followed her for a bit and got to see how she interacted with some of the herd. She pretty much stayed away from the others – but as they moved to graze, she followed. There was a stud that was pushy with her.

I told the owner we’d take her. He said we’d have to give him a couple of days to catch her. He would have to lure her up to a small stall near his home. A couple of days later, he called and said he had caught her and she was in a stall.

This was taken the day we picked Spirit up. She was battered and bleeding in several places. I gently put a halter on her and she walked into the trailer.

Spirit was a gem for her daily wound treatments – she would just stand and let us do what we had to her. It took several weeks but her injuries healed nicely. This was Spirit a few months later – the day she went to her adoptive home.

Spirit – we love you! Elizabeth thank you for opening your heart and home to Spirit!

Sincerely,
Theresa

I really wanted, and intended, to get an update out yesterday. It’s been very busy here – almost non-stop since Tuesday morning. Dr. Ryan came out to flush tear ducts on Tuesday and examine Peache’s eye. On Wednesday, it was one thing after another. Betsy Rose is doing well but she didn’t have much of an appetite yesterday but she had a bath and received even more presents! I have pictures of her and many of her gifts – just need more time to get them together to share them. She appreciates everything done for her and given to her – and I appreciate you all too! Bouie was a bit better yesterday and Gracie made new friends by moving to a paddock with Ebony, Lily, and Frodo. She seems to really like it. I hope to get out a better update, with pictures, tomorrow.

Betsy Rose and friends having a discussion yesterday about their plans for the day.

Our barn queens.

Wally is complaining, "I heard the rumor the mare in the pink frilly scarf started. There is some snoring going on in this barn, but it is way too loud to be me! Just sayin’…"

Dona Wechter and her husband visited this week, which meant Betsy Rose got even more attention! LOL!

Have a good night all!
