Today a large amount of fluid was drained off both sides of Ambrosia’s chest and she was started on a different antibiotic. Tomorrow they may or may not have to drain fluid off again. I will be going back to the hospital in the morning and will update when I can. The update I got tonight is that she will not have to have fluids run through the night. She is drinking very well on her own accord – she’s quite the mare!

I apologize for any emails, messages, or phone calls that I have not responded to – the day has been very busy and tomorrow will be another one. Please know that we truly appreciate everyone’s concern and caring about Ambrosia. She is quite the mare and I admire her courage, determination, and obvious love for life – the doctors and hospital staff were amazed at her. There light in those precious eyes of hers.

Bob and I both agree that the barn seems so very different tonight without her in it. We miss her. Her presence and love for life makes us all smile. And her little whinny is something that would move mountains, IMO. She’s quite the mare!

I have to say it was hard leaving her there today. But it is very good to know that she felt better after the fluids were drained today – now, we pray that they don’t come back. God bless and have a wonderful night everyone. I think I’m going to be asleep before my head hits the pillow tonight!

PS – Have I mentioned that she’s quite the mare? LOL – she really is!

Theresa

I will be taking Ambrosia to the University of Florida in the morning. They will be inserting a drain tube to remove the fluid. Cultures will be done, ultrasounds, etc. She will be in the hospital for a few days and likely on antibiotics for quite awhile. I will have my cell phone with me tomorrow and update when I can.

Something that was a little surprising was that her blood work results were fairly normal which is a good thing. She continues to eat and drink. She rests quite a bit which is to be expected. She absolutely loves attention. She really is a sweet girl – very trusting and appreciative. Her body may be very thin but her heart is full of love.

She has hope and a determination now that will be needed to get her through this. In three days she went from looking like she’d given up to this – clearly there is light in her eyes.

Thank you for the prayers, emails, posts, and donations for Ambrosia.  We have a jewelry fundraiser coming up to help with her expenses.  Her treatment and hospital stay won’t be inexpensive.  We’re going to take it day by day – baby steps.  I can’t help but to cry as I type this – concerned of what tomorrow may bring.  Ambrosia was dealt a really bad hand by humans – starved and bounced from home to home and then set out on the street homeless – she was wandering the neighborhood and nobody wanted to help her.  I’m very appreciative of the one person that took it upon themselves to walk her to their home when they saw she was sick and call us for help.  Ambrosia would have died alone and with no home or human.

I think that where there is faith, miraculous things can happen – I have witnessed it.  And I believe that there is strength in numbers – please continue to pray for Ambrosia.  So, tomorrow I will let go and let God.

I believe…

Sincerely,
Theresa

Dr. Ryan is here. Ultrasound showed almost 2/3rds of her lungs have fluid. She is very sick. Dr. Ryan says he’s never seen one this sick that is still standing and is as bright eyed as she is. She must have a strong will to live. We are working on a plan on where to go from here. Please pray for her.

Sincerely,

Theresa

Her temperature is low and she is sweating. She just does not feel well.

Ambrosia had a fairly good night. She is eating her soupy mashes and takes her medication well. She is drinking quite a bit which is a very good thing. She even let out a very faint whinny today. There is a little light in her eyes that we hope will grow stronger each day.

We are waiting for the blood work results to come back – once I have them in hand Dr. Ryan will come out and we’ll review her care plan.

Please keep Ambrosia in your prayers. Her odds of overcoming are not great but I think they are better than they were two days ago.

Thank you all for caring about this lovely girl. She deserves a chance and, because of help from others, we are able to give her that chance. God bless and thank you all!

Sincerely,
Theresa

Welcome Ambrosia!

The Mare has arrived at Beauty’s Haven! A vet met Theresa and Barbara at the location where the mare was living and upon examination, it was determined that the Mare has Pleurisy. She had a toxic gum line and foul odor coming from her mouth. She was weak and didn’t want to budge. She was sweating and her temperature was 102. She hung her head, never lifting it. She appeared to be in pain. The vet stated that her prognosis was poor and suggested that she be euthanized. Theresa would not agree to this without giving the mare a chance.

The vet pulled blood, a catheter was inserted, and medications were given. The Mare was loaded onto the trailer which took some time due to the her weakened state. Theresa and Barbara noted that once on the trailer, the Mare, who Theresa has named ‘Ambrosia,’ seemed to exhibit a sense of relief. Upon their arrival at Beauty’s Haven, Ambrosia unloaded beautifully and walked with some determination to her stall in the barn. Ambrosia is currently receiving IV fluids and antibiotics and it appears that her eyes are brighter and her ears are now erect. Ambrosia is a flea bitten TB mare and is approximately thirteen years old. Dr. Ryan will be out tomorrow or Tuesday to examine Ambrosia again. She is very thin and we do not know how affected her organs are. She tried to pass urine but did not. She has a long road to recovery ahead of her. If she doesn’t make it, we know we did our best – and she will have known that we tried and that she matters and is loved.

Thank you to everyone for your Pledges, Prayers, Candles and Bumps.

Pledges may be forwarded at this time. http://www.beautysequinerescue.org/donate.html

Please continue to keep Ambrosia in your thoughts and prayers.

Just got back from checking out the mare. She’s a very tall girl and appears to be a TB. Not sure of her age. She had a runny nose. Temp of 102.3. Couldn’t check her gums. Her breathing wasn’t too bad. The owner says she took her in as a rescue a couple of months ago but couldn’t put weight on her. Today she refused her food and wasn’t interested in water. When I tried to open her mouth she didn’t want to cooperate but there was a foul odor – some sort of infection going on in her mouth, possible dental issues, I just don’t know.

I don’t know if I can get a vet out there tomorrow or not – it’s in the middle of nowhere – but I’m going to try. I gave her some Banamine which seemed to help some. Her temp was down to 101.9 when we left. There was just nothing more we could do tonight. The lady wants to surrender her – she says she doesn’t have the funds to help her. I’m not comfortable bringing her in without being examined first. We have 3 babies at the rescue – the immune systems in 2 of the 3 babies were compromised at and after birth. Little Penny is better and Starbuck is doing very well but I won’t take any risks with them. We could make the QT paddock available if necessary but I really feel the mare may not be strong enough for the trip here. It’s a good 30 miles and she is weak. Having a vet see/treat her there and perhaps stabilizing her for the trip may be best.

It was easy to see the mare is not well. We offered her water before we left and she did drink.

The lady is going to take the mare’s temp in the am and call me. I’ll try to find a vet that will go out.

I will check emails in the morning to see where we are with pledges. But right now I’m beat and need sleep. Tomorrow will be here before we know it, although, I will think about this mare all night.

There are two things for sure we know right now. One – this mare needs help in a bad way and we hope to get her that help tomorrow. Two – we can’t help her without help from others. Please spread the word about her – ask others to share. Please pray for her and that tomorrow we will be able to start her on a road to recovery. Thank you all.

Sincerely,
Theresa

URGENT! This mare needs help!! She is very thin, depressed, and has no appetite. Right now we are asking for pledges! We need $600 for the initial month – vetting, etc. and sponsors to total $300 a month for 6 months in order to bring her in. I’m on my way now with Barbara to see the mare and if there is anything we can do for her to give her immediate relief.

We need sponsors to help this mare! She needs to be seen by a vet. If you can pledge to help please email me with PLEDGE in the subject line. Once we are at the needed amount, and if I feel it is a case we can take on, we will update and ask for pledges to turn into donations.

God bless – on the way to see her now.

Sincerely,
Theresa

It’s been awhile since I put out an update – it’s been extremely busy here. But I didn’t want to go into the weekend without getting one out especially knowing starting Monday things may be even worse here with the potential of Isaac moving this way and we’ll be preparing for it.

Pam brought Legacy over for a visit last week. Amadeus came up for a trim while he was here. They said “hi” through the round pen panels. It’s hard to believe that Legacy is as tall as Amadeus! Legacy has settled in well at his new home – his other mom stays in touch almost daily. She’s learning how much Legacy loves to play in water! Legacy and Baby Ray would dunk their heads into the waterers almost to their eyeballs!

Domino is doing good at foster mom, Pam’s. These pictures were taken last week when Domino got her hooficure here at the rescue. Domino didn’t really care for it but she did ok. That’s Ruby in the background – she’s never been very happy with another horse being close to her stall in the barn. Except for Beauty that is – Beauty rules the barn. Always.

Penelope and Penny are doing better each day. Penny has had a growth spurt and even can be seen running around a bit now and then.

Penny is much more alert and curious about everything. She stands much taller and looks much healthier.

And this is Willow after Jenny gave her a bath today. Willow is an absolute love and has a human (Pam) coming to visit with her for the 2nd time tomorrow – she may have found a home that isn’t very far from us! She’s put on some weight, her boo boo’s are almost all gone – there is just one on her tail that is still mending. She must have been allergic to the huge black flies where she came from. She’s got a beautiful mind.

Dr. Julia worked on Beauty yesterday – Auntie Kathy spent a good part of the day at the rescue and helped with her treatment. I’m very happy to report that Beauty is getting better each day. When Beauty feels better, I feel better. J Her abscess popped a few days ago and that helped. She still has issues in her sacrum area and there is some concern about possible cranial nerve damage.

This is Warrior and Ouiji. They were adopted out last year and were a part of a wonderful program at a troubled teens facility. Unfortunately, the program is no more. We picked them up a few days ago. They are looking for a home – together. Warrior is laid back and Ouiji is a spirited one. Warrior was born in 1999 and Ouiji in 1997.

This was taken a couple of days ago – we’ve had some serious rains but we have been given a reprieve for a couple of days. Starting early week we may start feeling the effects of Isaac. It looks like it was raining mini’s! We have two pair that are looking for homes. Homes must be within a couple of hours of driving distance from the rescue. They are really easy keepers and really can make you smile. They are all sweet – very sweet. This is Lobo, Chico, Ouiji, Warrior in front of Rambo, and Peggy Sue off to the side trying to figure out what they are running around for when they should be under cover which is where she was headed.

And updates on some of the adopted ones….

Nash loves his new home – and his new mare friends!

Mystical – the Friesian cross mare – she is doing very well. She’s actually an across the street neighbor to Sayan who is also doing great.

Remember Sammi and Joy? Joy is beautiful – just like her momma! Look how big Joy has grown – she’s a big girl now!

And here is Ghost – he is so loved and happy!

I am sorry about the small number of updates I have been putting out. I like to share with what is going on here – I love to share pictures. But I haven’t been doing it nearly as much as I used to or as much as I’d like. Believe me when I say it isn’t because I don’t want to – we’ve just been super busy and some volunteers have been gone for the summer. But please know that if I don’t get an update out for a few days it’s only because I’m swamped outside with the horses.

We have several horses available for adoption. We need to find them homes in order to free up room for others in need – this winter is going to be hard on so very many. If you don’t see what you are looking to adopt on the website visit our “Beauty’s Haven Equine Rescue Adoption Page” on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/bhfer.tb?ref=tn_tnmn#!/groups/281532335275853/. I admit that our website is out of date and needs a lot of work – we are working on it. And we are working on our first newsletter which we hope to have out by the middle of September if not sooner. We have a lot of things in the works and planned – fundraisers, clinics, volunteer recruiting, etc.

I know we’re all feeling the effects of the economy. I worry about donations almost all of the time. We need help – the costs associated with caring for the horses and running the rescue are high. We try to keep them to a minimum but we need help. Spread the word about us – share us on Facebook under “Beauty’s Haven Equine Rescue” at https://www.facebook.com/bhfer.tb?ref=tn_tnmn. If more people know about us, perhaps more will find a few dollars they can donate or some other way to help. Perhaps some have coupons for Purina or Nutrena feed that they could mail to us?

Here are some of the things that we currently need help with:

· Dr. Bess is coming again next week.  We need sponsors for three mini’s, Willow, and Morgan-La-Faye to get their teeth done.  Any dental treatment sponsors out there?

· We need sponsors for quite a few hooficures coming up – would anyone like to sponsor a hooficure?

· Horse size flymasks (long)

· Breakaway halters (Arabian, Small Horse, and Horse sizes)

· Help with vet bill.  This can be called directly into Peterson & Smith at 352-237-6151.  Last month was very hard on us – Starbuck, Bella, Chico, Lobo, Warrior, Lacey, Gentleman, Penelope, and Penny.

· Hay – credits can be called into Larson’s at 352-867-8333 or Quality Hay at 352-529-0888.

· Flyspray

· Shavings ($4 per bag but we must get 60 bags at once to get this price)

· Peggy Sue needs a small muzzle.  I hate to do this to her but she’s getting to pudgy which make it harder for her to get around.  Oh wait!  We may have one from when Aaleyah Belle had to wear one after her surgery – I’ll search the storage area tomorrow.  Fingers crossed!

· I know some don’t like to donate towards things that are not directly impacting a horse but sometimes things depend on how you look at them.  We need six tires for the rescue’s truck, Big Red, at $150 each tire + mounting + balancing.  This truck helps every horse here getting feed and hay.  It enables us to pull the trailer when we have to move a horse or take one to the hospital.  We’ve put this off as long as possible.

· Spirit needs a hay rack for her shelter.

· Cetyl-M – a few of our horses are on it for arthritis

· Money for top boards – they are $8 each.  On average, we have to replace one to two a week.  It may seem like a small thing but added up over time it is a lot.

· The tractor needs maintenance to the cost of about $350.

· The golf cart needs maintenance/repairs to the cost of about $110.

· Funds for 2 pallets of sod – $100 each.  We need this to help with erosion issues.  We put down 2 pallets about 2 weeks ago and it is doing well but it wasn’t nearly enough.

Any amount of help is greatly appreciated.  All donations are tax deductible.  We wish all of you a happy and blessed weekend and we thank you for your continued support!

Theresa
