I gave Starbuck his meds and noticed momma’s breathing was up. I took her temp and it is also up. Bella started to paw and wanted lay down – I was on the phone with the vet right away. I administered meds as prescribed and we are waiting to see how she responds. She seems more comfortable but if she shows any signs of discomfort I’m to call the vet back. She is currently standing and seems to be better but dear Lord we don’t need anything at all to happen to her. She’s such a good momma.

Dr. Ryan was out this am and x-rays were taken of Starbuck’s knees. It’s thought the baby was born a bit premature – it’s amazing he is doing as well as he is considering…
X-rays showed issues of the common digital extensor tendons in both front knees. He’s confined to the stall for the near future.

Please pray for Bella and Starbuck – thank you all.

Sincerely,
Theresa

The baby’s name is Starbuck. It’s been on the tip of my tongue since I first saw him – I don’t know why. I waited for another name to come to me but it didn’t – Starbuck is it!

Starbuck was still having a tough time going poop again today. I was going to run him some fluids after his mom got a bath but that’s when he got his catheter out.

Dr. Tanya came back out and oiled him and put in another catheter – he’ll be getting antibiotics and other meds for a few more days. It is possible he has a meconium impaction which would not be a good thing. He may have gone without needed care after he was born for too long. I hope and pray that isn’t the case.

Starbuck’s legs deviate outwards and he is knees are actually bending backwards – more than he was yesterday. We don’t know if he was born early, late, etc. We do know that Dr. Ryan will be out tomorrow – we’ll likely get x-rays done.

Bella looks better – even if she didn’t get a very good bath.

The other horses that were at the same place that Bella and Starbuck came from were all picked up today – I didn’t want any of them to be left behind alone – they were family. The mini with the ruptured eye was picked up from the hospital this evening and is doing better. She tried to colic at the hospital after the surgery. She’s gone to her new home – thank you Leisha! The stud was picked up by Pam this evening and delivered to his new home (thank you Marilyn!). At the same time he was picked up, Dawn (Faith Equine Rescue) picked up the coming 3 yr old filly – this filly may be pregnant by her sire – a vet will be examining her tomorrow.

God bless everyone that helped us to pull this all together and that has helped in any way. Please – keep all of them in your prayers.

Theresa

Just a quick update…

Bella got somewhat of a much needed bath today. Still working on that mane. We couldn’t stay out long because the baby isn’t supposed to be out. Bella has layers of dirt so it’ going to take a couple more baths to get her good and clean. She really is a doll. Jean drove up today to help out – thanks Jean!!

Baby managed to get the catheter out of his neck so the vet is coming back out to put another in. I’m so sorry to have to put the baby through this again. It wasn’t wrapped but you can bet that this time it will be. He is still straining to go poo. It’s hard to believe that momma is providing more milk already but she is – she actually has a little bit of a bag. J

Have to run – the vet just got here.

Sorry I didn’t get this out last night – I had it about done and got the blue screen of death and was too tired to start over.

Mom and baby arrived and unloaded ok last evening. The mare dropped her head immediately and started grazing. She has the kindest eyes. And her baby is adorable.

Welcome to Beauty’s Haven little one…

You can see he has issues with his front legs – he does break over with his front right at times but he catches himself.

His mom, Bella, really loves the grass but for now they will have to be confined to a stall. We’ll do a small amount of hand walking but not much. The baby’s immune system is not what it needs to be. He is susceptible to infection/disease related to failure of passive transfer – he didn’t get the antibodies from momma’s milk in the first few critical hours after he was born. He could develop infected joints, pneumonia, diarrhea, etc. He is on antibiotics and we are monitoring him closely. Babies can crash pretty quickly but he seems to be feeling better this morning. He sleeps a lot.

The baby is pretty small. Bella is very careful around him and she loves him dearly. She will get a bath today, I hope.

Bella needs to put quite a bit of weight on and get stronger – she’s given baby her all. She has very little milk to offer but this should improve – she’s been started on some meds to help with this.

Dr. Tanya examined the baby and drew blood yesterday. Blood tests were also done on momma. The baby still had some retained meconium which is of some concern. At 3 or 4 days old the meconium should be gone.

The little guy was very good for his exam.

He got fluids and the catheter was left in so that we can run fluids and administer meds. We monitor his temp, HR, etc. His temp was up last night, 102.7. It’s down a bit this morning. It will take time but he’s getting what he needs and Bella is getting a good diet and supplements.

We are now getting their new stall ready – he’ll be on the camera so we can have more eyes on him. They will be stall bound for quite awhile.

These two need sponsors – would anyone like to sign up to help with their care by sending a monthly amount (i.e. $10, $20, etc.)? They will be using a lot of shavings which are $4 a bag. The dentist will be out over the weekend to do Bella’s teeth – they are pretty bad. We will have more to do on the baby’s front legs – time will tell.

Thank you all for caring and for helping. They have a long way to go – please keep them in your prayers.

Theresa

I was almost done with an update and I got the blue screen of death. I will have to do it over in the morning – too tired tonight but wanted to let everyone know that the mare and baby are here. The vet has come and gone. His IGG level was very low and even with him getting plasma today it may not have been enough – he may need more – he is at risk of going septic. We are waiting on bloodwork results.

I’ll provide more info in the morning. Have to go give meds and tuck him in for a few hours. More pictures and info in the morning.

Thank you all for caring. God bless – please pray for this little one and his momma.

Oh – good news on the others. The mini is going to the hospital tomorrow and will be going to her new home from there. The filly and stud are being picked up tomorrow – at the same time. I can’t tell you how worried I was about this – a family is being separated and it breaks my heart. A big thank you to those that helped to make this happen!

NO HORSE LEFT BEHIND!!

The vet was very happy to find the baby hanging on – his temperature is down a little (was 102+) this am.  His momma looks very concerned and so caring – she is standing over him and likely praying along with us.

A mother’s love….

Some good news before calling it a day.  Someone that has adopted from us in the past will be taking the mini and the 2 yr old filly!

I’ve been on the phone for hours and have had no luck finding a place for these horses to go – not even the mini.  I didn’t find out until a short time ago that nobody lives on the property.

The horses include:

· 1 stud – needs to be gelded
· 1 two yr old filly – may be pregnant
· 1 mini mare – eye injury
· 1 mare with her couple of days old colt – the colt has low IGG and leg issue

Our main focus now is the mini and the mare/colt.  The mini’s left eye has ruptured and needs to be removed.  Good news about this is that the funds for the surgery to remove the eye is being donated.  Surgery to remove the eye can be done on Thursday at a hospital.  What is needed is someone that is willing to give the mare a good home that can pick her up and then provide for her post surgical care.  After care will include giving Banamine and antibiotics for a few days.  She’s in good shape otherwise.  She needs an approved home and transport to the new home on Thursday.

The colt’s IGG is below 400 and he needs plasma.  The vet can’t run the plasma today because the owner has locked up the property and nobody is there.  The owner will meet the vet there in the morning so she can run the plasma and try to stabilize the baby for transport.  The other issue with the baby is with his front leg – the vet feels it is a mechanical issue with his tendon and tendon sheath.  But the big concern is his IGG level.  It’s very important that he gets that plasma.

The baby’s momma looks tired and depressed.  I was told that while she was pregnant with this baby she was attacked by kids that climbed over the fence one night. They used a knife and stabbed her in at least 3 places and beat her with an aluminium baseball bat.  She’s had a tough time, that’s for sure.  And now her baby is having a tough time too.  The owner didn’t know there was a baby until yesterday.  We need sponsors for them or an approved permanent home or a rescue that can provide for their needs.  The baby is going to need limited exercise for now – he may need other treatment for the tendon issue but now he needs plasma or he likely won’t be around to worry about his tendon issue.

The stud needs to be gelded.

And the 2 year old filly – she’s of good weight but could be pregnant.  But the stud is also her father.

If anyone can help any of these horses please contact me.  We are taking pledges to help the mare/baby.  Turning critical babies away is something we have a tough time doing – the baby is only a couple of days old.  I don’t know how long we need pledges for – for as long as it takes!  But in the meantime plasma WILL be run in the am or he may die – and we will pick them up tomorrow if the vet says they can make the trip.  We have $375 of the $450 needed for the vet to run the plasma. We would need to transport him as soon as the vet says the baby is up for it.  That will cost at least another $100.  Can anyone help?

Please say prayers for all of them. It will be an extremely busy day here tomorrow but we will have a couple of extra volunteers – thankfully!  I plan to spend the majority of my day in the office tomorrow.  Thank you.

Theresa

We have another tragic situation we need help with.  A 2 yr old filly, paint stud, mare with days old colt on her side that is ill, and a mini with a ruptured eye.  The mini with the eye injury needs help ASAP.  I’m waiting on a vet report for the colt – he has issues too.  If there is a rescue that can possibly help please let me know. We just lost power so I’ll update when I can – the UPS won’t last long and I’m here alone.  Cell phone is charged though.

Sincerely,
