Beauty Update

I’m so very happy to report that it appears Beauty has taken a turn for the better! It’s been a tough couple of weeks, but hopefully, the worst is behind us. I’ll update with more details later, but I wanted to share this good news! Thank you, all, for keeping Beauty in your thoughts and prayers.

Please remember to vote for us every day in the SunState Federal Credit Union’s ‘Charity of the Month’ contest. It runs through the end of February and with your help, we could win $1000 which would be applied toward hay for our beloved herd. Please also share and ask family and friends to vote daily and share as well. An organization can only win this contest once a year and we were most fortunate to have been one of the twelve recipients of the ‘Charity of the Month’ prize, for the past two years. I know that we can do this! Just click here to cast your vote!

Thank you all for your love and support and thank you to everyone who so generously donated to Saturday’s Hay Run!

Pray For Beauty
January 31st, 2018

Our beloved Beauty was having a great deal of discomfort in both front feet yesterday. Dr. Ted Specht came out last evening to examine her and to do x-rays. I was worried sick because Beauty has a history of founder. Currently, she has a compound issue – her soles are a bit too thin and she’s having a laminitis flare-up. We’re doing everything we can to manage this – the good Lord knows my heart hasn’t recovered from losing Betsy Rose and I’m not sure I ever will. Beauty is my heart horse and the reason this rescue came to be. Please keep Beauty in your prayers.

MAGICS MILESTONE

January 24th, 2018

For those who know Magic’s story, you’ll understand how big an accomplishment this is, and for those who are unaware of his history, I hope that you will gain a better understanding of his very sad past.

Magic is an Arabian stallion that was used as a tripping horse. Most horses don’t survive this horrific abuse and if they do, they are so mentally messed up, that they are most often, deemed crazy and sent to slaughter.

After surviving his “charro” life, Magic ended up with someone who beat him with a 2 x 4 because he would not take a saddle. I received a call from a young lady who had witnessed this repeated abuse and asked if we could help. From the moment I saw Magic, I knew he’d be coming home with us. He was very untrusting and petrified of people, ropes, boards, etc., and understandably so.

I was very blessed that he accepted me from the very beginning and we have a relationship built on trust. It took a few years, but now he will approach other humans for scratches. I do tell everyone who goes into his paddock, however, that Magic lives life on his terms. Nobody is allowed to try to “catch” or halter him – he feels threatened if they do, and runs away.

Magic accepts me haltering him, treating injuries, putting a flymask on him, and more. If he needs a vet, I sedate him and put a soft towel over his eyes and once the vet arrives and does what he needs to do, and then leaves, I remove the towel.  It’s worked great.

Magic has had melanomas for years which had not caused an issue. However, one recently got very angry after he rubbed it raw against a board. I cleaned and treated it daily. There really wasn’t a way to keep the flies from the sore so I considered putting a sleazy on him to protect the area. Well, I tried and was pleasantly surprised when he stood perfectly still and let me do so!  I was so proud of him! I opted to leave the sore open and continued to keep it clean and treated and thankfully, it’s so much better now. But the sleazy was a major milestone for him!

The barn just isn’t the same without Cookie and Betsy Rose. Ruby gets more attention now but I’ll bet she, too, wishes her four legged friends were still with us.

The horses were happy to get out of their blankets on Monday. We’re happy the temps are up a bit but it is predicted that the cold weather will be returning this weekend.

Aaleyah Belle and that tongue! All she wanted to do was slime me!

Cricket really seemed to appreciate her blanket last week during the cold temps and freezing rains.

We got Betsy a new pack of bows this year – they always looked so cute on her. Sadly, she never got to see them but I didn’t think she would mind if some of the others wore them on Christmas Day.

Love it so much when the horses are very happy with their hay. Every horse in this photo is looking for a forever home.

JoJo is one of the most intuitive and caring donks I’ve ever known. This was taken a couple of days after Betsy Rose left us. He just wanted hugs.

I walked out of the feed room to move Beauty back to her paddock for the evening. I looked up to the sky and found a beautiful surprise.

This image truly made me smile!

I listened to the weather forecast yesterday instead of my little voice and only blanketed a few of the horses last night. I figured we could do so this am with the help of volunteers but I awoke to light rain, winds, freezing cold temperatures and wet horses! The temperature continued to drop throughout the day and the drizzle wouldn’t stop. Horses came in four at a time to dry so they could get blanketed. We can deal with the cold but not with the added rain and wind. The weather won’t be better for several days and a few people have even mentioned that there is light snow in the forecast! ☃️

Many thanks to our volunteers, Karen, Kim, and Jill, who blanketed nearly all of the horses!

Emma’s cute little nose is still a bit lazy on one side due to nerve damage sustained from her gunshot injuries.

Although many months have gone by, there is still a $7K reward being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) that shot her multiple times.  We must continue to seek Justice for Emma.

Emma is hoping that 2018 will be the year that her dream of a loving, forever home as a pasture mate, will finally come true!

Silly Ruby doesn’t seem to mind the cold at all…but then again, she is tucked away in the cozy barn!

Betsy Rose’s ashes have been returned to us – her spirit never left – she is home. I don’t know how to thank you all for your good thoughts, prayers, and kind words. I’m sorry that it’s taken me so long to get myself together.  I have yet to return phone calls and I haven’t read but a few of the 1000’s of emails that I have received. Some of you have asked how much Betsy’s vet bills are so you can help. We won’t have an answer until we get the bills in a couple of weeks and when we know, we will post the information and any help will be greatly appreciated. At the time, paying her expenses was the last thing on our minds and we truly appreciate your patience with us in responding to that question.

As most know, Betsy Rose has had a history of choke. Two years ago, in December, a vet came to clear a choke and told us Betsy had a mass pressing against her esophagus and that she would likely need to be put down sooner than later. We had Dr. Porter out that same evening for a second opinion. He scoped Betsy Rose and determined there was no mass, no strictures. She was losing the ability to swallow and it would get worse. Betsy started wearing a grazing muzzle and got soupy meals. She did have a few more choke episodes over the next two years, but they were cleared. But this time, it wasn’t something that could be fixed. And without the ability to swallow, one can’t survive.

But what a blessing it was that we had two more years with her! I’ve cried a river of tears – I miss her more than words can say. She was such a part of my life every single day. But my tears haven’t been just for me – but also for all of you that love her as well. Betsy Rose is the little mare that beat the odds and inspired many to believe.  She had such fierce determination, courage, and an iron will.  She made friends all around the world!  And now, as we move into a New Year, even though I’m sure I’ll have my moments and many more tears, it’s time to be thankful and rejoice for the time we had with her and the memories made.

When we think of those companions who traveled by our side down life’s road, let us not say with sadness that they left us behind, but rather say with gentle gratitude that they once were with us.

Betsy Rose will be with us, always. I sense her everywhere and her precious whinny can still be heard when I least expect it and that brings me great comfort and joy. We will always remain #betsyrosestrong.

Betsy A New Angel

It is with a heavy heart that I must share the sad news that our beloved Betsy Rose has gone to Rainbow Bridge. We did everything possible in our attempt to save her and needless to say, we are totally devastated. This has truly taken a toll on Theresa so she will be offline for a few days. Please keep Theresa and the entire Beauty’s Haven family in your thoughts and prayers.

‘To place your horse’s need for you to let her leave her failing body above your need to keep her with you – that – is the greatest and purest love.’
