Nadia and Venus, Together Again

Nadia has had DLSD for a long time and we have worked with traditional vets, a great farrier, and holistic vet over the years to try to keep her comfortable. But she has grown more uncomfortable over the past few weeks, and over the past couple of days she has made it clear to me that she’s tired.

Upon consultation with the vet, and what I had already felt deeply in my heart, we made the decision to help our beautiful Nadia reunite not only with her beloved Venus, but with all of her other friends who have crossed before her and are now galloping happily with the Heavenly Herd. They shall all remain forever in our hearts.

Gabe, Maggie & Nadia

It was wonderful seeing Gabe and Maggie (a recent county seizure) together exploring new places and making new friends. They are both such very sweet horses. Gabe has COPD, which we are trying to manage, whilst sweet Maggie does not sweat at times. Maggie’s neglect case is still pending with the county but her owner has been charged. Nadia is still searching for a perfect friend since we lost Venus in November. Nadia and Venus had been together for twenty-five plus years. A few weeks after Venus passed, Peaches sensed that Nadia was grieving and remained by her side. Peaches has always helped others cope with the loss of a friend, but since she has always been a loner, her comfort to others is only temporary and after a few weeks of giving the other horse time to adjust, Peaches is ready for the other horse to move on. Nadia has Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Desmitis (DSLD), a progressive condition that leads to chronic breakdown of tendons and ligaments. Her condition will only worsen and at some point, we will have to make the decision to let her join Venus. We will keep her comfortable for as long as possible, but in the meantime, we will continue our quest to find Nadia another very best friend from within our herd.

Our Beloved Venus

I’m sorry that I don’t have a good update. Venus took a turn for the worse on Wednesday evening, and yesterday, it was time to let her go. It wasn’t the outcome that we had prayed for, but it was the most loving thing that we could do for her. We couldn’t have asked for a more compassionate and kind care team – Dr. Adams, Dr. Cuadros, and all of the staff at Ocala Equine Medical Center were amazing and we appreciate them all, very much.

We were concerned about how Nadia would handle losing her best friend. We gave Nadia some time with Venus and I believe they both understood what was happening. At that point, I think we all (humans and horses) had reached a place called ‘acceptance.’ Acceptance is key to moving forward and with it, comes change.

Life at the rescue will be different, but we will cherish memories of Venus and do what she would want us to do – continue to help others in need.

Nadia has settled into a paddock with Peaches. Peaches is pretty much a loner – she always has been. But this afternoon, she sensed that Nadia needed a friend and when I left them, they were sharing a bag of hay hanging in their shelter. It gave me great peace.

Venus left this world with dignity, knowing that she was very much loved. She was a regal mare with a lion’s heart, fire in her soul and an iron will. She was the personification of beauty and grace. Her presence is still near and dear – we will carry her in our hearts, always.

Prayers Needed for Venus

Sadly, we discovered Venus colicing yesterday morning. When the vet arrived, fluids were run as Venus tried to work through her colic the remainder of the day.

Venus is 37 years young and her best friend, Nadia, has been outside of her stall from the beginning. They are very bonded. Very early this morning, Venus did have a bowel movement, and although it was quite dry, we were ecstatic nonetheless!

We made the decision, however, that it would be in Venus’s best interest to send both girls to the hospital to ensure that Venus receives the very best of what she needs, including having her BFF there.

We estimate that Venus’s hospital stay and treatment will cost a minimum of $2,000, so if anyone would like to assist with this most necessary need, it would be so very much appreciated.

Drinkers of the Wind


Nadia and Venus, both purebred Arabians, are truly enchanted with the new fencing. About 300’ of the last section of the 25+ year old rusty fence was replaced yesterday and should be completed today.

Please enjoy the video below of Venus, the bay, who is 35 years young and Nadia, who is in her mid 20’s, happily trotting along the fence line.

They All Just Love Extra Attention!

September 21st, 2013

Betsy Rose visiting with Jane and Steve yesterday.  Betsy Rose is loved by everyone! And she loves the attention!

CaryLou, Harvey, and Wally enjoy visitors too. They look like little powder puffs with their fuzzy coats.

Penny isn’t a baby anymore! She won’t be as big as her momma. She was singing this am to a donkey at the neighbors. It was so cute. Her bray has gotten so much stronger and louder!

Penny demanding all of the attention yesterday. That’s her mom, Penelope, trying to take a siesta. Penny loves to take the humans water bottles, cell phones, etc.

Nadia is getting quite a tummy on her. I think we’re going to have her palpated. We don’t know about her history other than she had a baby pulled from her a couple of months before she came to us. She’s a really nice 16 yr old Warmblood.

Nevada has the kindest eyes. He looks great in pink too.

Nevada will be leaving for his new home tomorrow. He will be less than 15 minutes away. It’s always bittersweet when they leave but this is what we do. They all deserve a good forever home.
