Tinsel

Tinsel, a stunning Quarter Horse Roan Mare, born in 2001, was rescued by Beauty’s Haven in November 2016. She arrived with a horrific eye injury that had been left untreated and was 250 pounds underweight. Tinsel had previously been used for barrel racing and other games. Her rehabilitation and recovery were remarkable. Even though the vets believed her right eye would be lost, with around the clock care, it thankfully, healed! She does have a scar in that eye, but she can see just fine. She’s filled out – she’s beautiful!

Tinsel recently suffered a setback and is currently in Rehabilitation. Although it was initially believed that she had sustained a fracture in her hock region, x-rays revealed that no fracture had occurred. Additional tests indicated that Tinsel had an infection in her hock region that is aggressively being treated. There was quite a bit of heat and swelling in the area, but she does put weight on that leg at times. Dr. Ted has been monitoring Tinsel’s serum amyloid A values (SAA) as well as repeatedly assessing cultures and performing additional tests. Tinsel has been receiving heavy duty antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and other medications and supplements which are administered around the clock. Her water and nutritional intake, her temperature, heart rate, etc. are all being monitored as her temperature does fluctuate. Tinsel has a great appetite even though she has lost some weight.

Tinsel is a pleasure to ride and once she overcomes this hurdle and completes her rehabilitation, she will be ready for a forever home. She is good under saddle, although if not ridden often, she has an old habit of moving a bit too fast and one needs to remind her that she’s a trail horse now and her racing days are over! Tinsel is a happy girl with a very sweet disposition. She simply adores attention and she gets along extremely well with her pasture mates.
