“Mommy Theresa I’m ready for this! I’m a little scared but Dr. Lugo says I’ll be asleep the whole time. And you’ll be there, right? He says he’s going to take away the things in my legs that are making them hurt and that once it all heals, I’ll feel much better! It’s a beautiful day – please go tell him I’m ready, ok? I believe it’s all good!”

Emma Believes

I’m with Emma – I believe!

She’s going to be ok. She will get through the surgery just fine and overcome infection. She will. Please keep her in your prayers. I’ll update as I can. Thank you all.

February 5th, 2017

A vet contacted us about a three year old Quarter Horse filly that was shot – he does not want to euthanize her and we are her last hope. She has multiple buckshot fragments lodged in her.  The vet found her with blood from her nose and mouth from the wound over the upper jaw.  The wound on the cheek shattered the inside – the pellet lodged in the upper cheek molar roots/sinus area possibly may need to be removed. There is a pellet wound behind her ear – that pellet is right on top of the atlas of the vertebral column.  There’s a wound where a pellet grazed just below her eye.  A pellet is lodged into the distal cannon above the fetlock on the left hind along with ones in the left front and there are other leg wounds.  The split bone is shattered.  A big concern is infection and the damage done to her knee which is pretty swollen.

FILLY SHOT WHILE GRAZING

The filly needs constant oversight and care, medications, and a stall which she presently, doesn’t have. She’s turned out on many acres with other horses which puts her at risk for more injury and infection.  And she needs surgery ASAP.

We had a surgeon look at her x-rays today and he feels that she’s got a good chance of recovering – surgery can be done this coming week. But we need your help to make this happen. We need $2500 to $3,000 for her immediate needs/surgery. We don’t know how much aftercare will cost but we do know she needs help now if she has a chance. We were not planning to take in any additional horses until some here are adopted out – we are maxed – but I’ve met this filly and she’s determined to overcome.  She’s full of life and deserves a chance. When the vet says, “You’re her last chance,” and you see the life in her eyes, well, we just can’t walk away.

A wonderful friend and supporter has offered a Match Game to help with the surgical/medical needs of this sweet girl so all donations up to $500 will be matched! Donations are tax deductible and can be made via various means on our website at website or via our PayPal address: bhfer@earthlink.net. If donating via PayPal, please designate your donation for ‘QH Filly.’ If you select the tab for ‘Friends or Family,’ no fees will be deducted from your contribution.

Please help us give this girl a chance. We want to get her here ASAP in order to provide her with the care that she so desperately needs.

Thank you, as always, for your continued love and support.

Yesterday was not a good day for Magic but he knows that it will get better. He has an issue with his right eye which needs to be treated for several days. Yesterday, he learned that a flymask wouldn’t gobble him up. He’s such a brave boy!

For those who don’t know Magic, he’s a 17 year old Arabian stud that had been used in the Mexican “sport” of horse tripping. Magic was lucky to have survived, but it left him emotionally scarred which made him a good candidate for being sent to slaughter as humans considered him to be crazy, unmanageable and even dangerous. He’s untrusting of humans which is truly understandable. I’m certain that the nightmares he endured will never be erased from his memories.

There are some that strongly feel that Magic should be molded into a “normal” horse. I’ve spent countless hours with him and I understand him. Just imagine the pain, anxiety and fear he survived. He doesn’t care for ropes – scars he wears tell a story. I refuse to make him endure anything that he is uncomfortable with. He accepts me – I do what I need to do to address any medical issues that may arise and I’m grateful to him for that. I know this horse inside and out – Arabians are very intelligent and communicative. We can’t take away his past but we can ensure that all of his tomorrows are happy and carefree. And that’s what we intend to do. Magic is a happy horse that will live out the rest of his life on his terms. We promised him that.MagicEye1Magic has come a long way. He often approaches other humans now and may even ask for scratches. But humans are not allowed to walk after or chase him. If he walks away, and he often does, that’s his prerogative. He’s a very special horse. Oh, and I taught him to give kisses a few years ago!

I believe in Magic and I’m very proud of him! Now, let’s hope he tolerates the treatments to his eye. Prayers and positive thoughts would be so very appreciated!

Magic also needs sponsors – his medications are not inexpensive. Our PayPal address is bhfer@earthlink.net. Donations can also be made via our website. All donations are tax deductible and no amount is too small.

Thank you all, for your continued love and support.

We have wonderful news! Dr. Mangan saw Tinsel last weekend and her eye is much better! She’s only on one eye medication now!  As he was examining Tinsel, little Betsy Rose let it be known that she was not at all happy that Tinsel was standing in her place in the aisle-way. Dr. Mangan was truly amazed at Betsy’s remarkable spunk!
DrManganBetsyVisit

Dr. Bess found a lose tooth when she worked on Tinsel last week. Tinsel surely did need to have some work done.

Tinsel should feel a lot better now that her lose tooth has been extracted!

Ruby could use some good thoughts and prayers – she’s not feeling well.  Dr. Julia examined her and her blood work results should be back tomorrow.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 8TH…

Dr. Specht was out this evening to follow up on Ruby for Dr. Julia. We’re so blessed to have such a wonderful support team! Ruby’s initial blood work came back and the results were not good so additional lab tests were done this afternoon. We received the lab report this evening and the results are quite worrisome. Please continue to keep sweet Ruby in your thoughts and prayers.

12/01/16  Wednesday

SeAnna had a dental appointment with Dr. Bess Darrow today. She was a little reluctant to walk on the trailer but it didn’t take long for her to decide it would be ok.

SeAnnaDental1

SeAnna is grossly underweight – a body condition score of 1. Sometimes teeth contribute to weight loss but not in this case – she was just not fed. I’m often told that a horse is thin because it’s old. Some older ones may need a special diet but that’s no reason to let them starve. Starving any animal is just plain cruel.

SeAnnaDental2

SeAnna has an overbite and needed some adjustments but her mouth wasn’t terribly bad. She had a happy mouth once Dr. Bess was finished with her.

SeAnnaDental3

SeAnna is 20 years young and she is an absolute sweetheart. How anyone could just walk away and leave any animal behind to starve is something I’ll never be able to understand. But she’s safe now, a new chapter in her life is underway. Thank you all for caring!

11/30/16  Wednesday

We named the latest arrival SeAnna (pronounced see-anna) which is a variant of the name Janet. It means “Gift from God.” We lost a dear animal warrior and friend last week, Janet Lacetera, and I’m sure she would be truly honored. Janet had a heart of gold and made a difference in the lives of many horses and other animals.

seannafaceofhunger

Dr. Specht did a physical on SeAnna.  She’s a very sweet mare estimated to be about 20 years young. She has a heart murmur and a tummy with quite a bit of sand in it.

SeAnnaSpecht1

SeAnna is barely a 1 on the body condition score scale – she’s a rack of bones and is at least 300 lbs. underweight. Blood work and a fecal were done which we will review with the vet tomorrow.

SeAnna BCS-1

SeAnna has an appointment with Dr. Bess Darrow (Tune-Ups Dentistry) tomorrow to get her teeth done which she badly needs. She’s got an overbite and other issues.

SeAnna Teeth

I wanted to give her a bath today but felt it best to wait. However, I did give her a good brushing and it took me awhile to get her mane combed out.  I think she really enjoyed the attention.

SeAnnaManeBefore

SeAnna is really a beautiful girl – inside and out. It’s really very sad what she endured before coming here. But that is in the past and she’s started a new chapter in her life. No more hunger or neglect.

11/30/16  Wednesday

Dr. Specht was here for a good part of the morning and I’ve been tending to the new arrivals for much of the day.

Tinsel’s eye doesn’t appear any worse. However, she’s running an elevated temperature of unknown origin and has been started on antibiotics. We are closely monitoring her. She’s got a good appetite and is drinking well.

TinselSpecht1

Tinsel is scheduled to have her dental work done tomorrow but we’ll first have to see how she’s doing. Her hooficure is scheduled for Friday.

Please keep our sweet girl in your prayers.  Thank you.

Sunday evening…
URGENT: Lots going on, but right now, we need help for this mare!

MareInNeedTinsel

The mare has an eye injury and other issues. Can anyone help sponsor her with a onetime and/or monthly donation? We can’t do this alone. We need at least six months of monthly commitments to cover her needs. I’m with her right now and want to transport her to the rescue and get a vet out ASAP.

TinselEyeBefore1

We named her Tinsel. She did well for the vet – she was examined and a CBC and chemistry panel were pulled. Her eye has a pretty horrible ulcer. The vet will be back tomorrow to put a lavage/catheter system in the eye – there are different meds that we need to administer around the clock as well. The eye and the area around it are pretty swollen and painful. Tinsel is also being treated for stomach ulcers. The vet rated her body condition score as a ‘one.’

TinselVet1

11/28/16  MONDAY MORNING…

Tinsel had a pretty good night. She does not seem to be uncomfortable. She’s a total sweetheart. Seeing her, and the eye injury during daylight, shows her condition as being a bit better but her eye does not look good at all. I’m not even sure it can be saved, but we will do our best. It’s going to take extensive treatment. Medication will be administered every couple of hours around the clock. The vet will be back out soon to assess it and potentially, put in a lavage system or perhaps make another recommendation.

TinselEyeBeforeAR

Please keep Tinsel in your prayers. We still need help with her financially – this is not going to be an inexpensive rehab.

August 25th…
Betsy Rose and the boys this morning.

Dr. Mangan also examined Betsy Rose’s eyes on the day that he came out to check Penny and Spirit. Betsy has lost vision in her right eye over the course of the past several years while her left eye is showing degenerative changes.

Betsy Rose is so cute and didn’t mind her exam at all.

I wonder what she was whispering in Dr. Mangan’s ear?

“Whatcha see in their Doc?”
Sawyer was good for his eye exam too. Just look at that cute face!
Sawyer’s vision is very compromised due to optic nerve atrophy and his lenses are not well – the aging process impacts eyes too.
Dr. Bess Darrow also worked on Betsy Rose last week.
Betsy lost a tooth which was ready to fall out so Bess just had to help it a little bit.

“Lunch please!”

Little E never fails to let us know when it’s meal time.
August 27th…
Good Morning from Jingle! Even though he is now quite a big boy, he continues to be as sweet as ever!
Sawyer and his Lucy. And Whiskers had played himself out!
