Pictures from today…

Getting ready to go play.

I had been told to be careful when releasing her because she would turn and bolt. We have been working on halter on, off, release, and doing it all over again. So far, so good. Thankfully.

She got lots of praise. Released and more praise. And then she followed.

And she kept following. I like to teach them to come or follow when I tap my hand on my leg. Sometimes I don’t have much of a voice.

Hopefully she’ll continue to do good. There may very well be buttons I haven’t pushed yet. For now, we’ll continue to take it slow and keep building trust. I have seen her be uncomfortable with some noises which I guess are new to her. But if she is on the lead when she hears something new she just raises her head and goes on alert and freezes – she hasn’t tried to flee. Act like it’s nothing and she relaxes pretty quickly. She is more comfortable with me on her right side than she is her left – we’ll be working on that.

Thank you all for caring about her. I’m so very happy we were able to help her!

Sincerely,
Theresa

I meant to send this out last night to our email distro list. Sorry it’s late…

Gypsy today… The weather wasn’t good but I spent a few minutes with her a few times throughout the day. She’s pretty much an “in your pocket” girl that greets me at the gate. I haven’t experienced any mean streaks with her yet – hopefully there won’t be any.

She’s curious about everything – she’s like a shadow.

Theresa

A quick update from the weekend…

Amy got a makeover yesterday! Wanda and her daughter, Martina, did a great job clipping her and Amy behaved very well! She looks like a different horse! And she is much more comfortable. She knows she’s styling… And we saw the baby squirming!

Amy is a cutie pretending to be a Gypsy Vanner! Ariel is still shy but is getting better. We were told that both mares were bred last April. We’ll have mini babies at the Celebration of Life this year which is scheduled for April 20th!

Sisco was moved to a paddock with Genesis and Cisco – he has already let them know he is in charge!

Beautiful mares that are near and dear to me – Beauty, Princess, and Sunset is in the background.

Sachet, Noelle, Baby Girl, and Baby Ray is in the background munching on hay. Sachet and Noelle will be leaving for their new home together soon. I’m so happy that they get to stay together!

Sunset has a potential home! It would be a wonderful home and she’d get lots of attention and love – I’m so excited for her! She is just a doll!

Remember Starlight? She is adored and is one happy horse! This is what we want for all of them – a life of happiness with lots of TLC!

Genesis had visitors today which he loved – he adores human attention. When I told Grace she could get up on him she seemed surprised. He is a big teddy bear! Once Grace was up there, well, her smile says it all! She sat on him and hugged him and smiled and then hugged him some more. I think he may have a new home.

Gypsy is doing really well. We had some “play” times throughout the day and she didn’t misbehave at all. I groomed her and picked up and cleaned her front feet. I didn’t attempt her back feet yet – I was told they haven’t been trimmed because she will kick and I really wanted to end the day on a good note (for both of us). We’ll get to them at the right time. I was also warned to be careful when I take the halter off of her because she will turn and take off. This hasn’t happened yet. She just stands there looking like “what, we’re done already?” I’d walk away and she would follow. She is very attentive to what is going on around her and seems a bit insecure at times. Those long and pretty ears move all around constantly. Her eyes are soft and she seems content. And she is pretty vocal. Tomorrow we’ll do a little more as long as the weather is nice.

In less than 24 hours, with support from others, we made a difference to this beautiful soul. Gypsy will never be beaten with a 2 x 4 again. She will never again be at risk of being fed to big cats. She will not be put into any situation that would put her in harm’s way. I think she may have been pushed too hard and too fast. And I think that some of the things she did, well, she did them in self defense. It never ceases to amaze me how forgiving horses are. I think she is willing to start over again. We may have some bumps along the way but with time, patience, love, consistency, listening, and whispering – I think she will be ok.

Silver Belle and Rayo will be leaving to go to their new home together next week. We have many adoptions lined up – it’s going to be a tough few weeks as we see them go. But this is what we do and they all deserve their own human family. And it’s only because of help from others that we have been able to give these horses another chance – God bless you all!

Theresa

The match game was completed – God bless and thank you everyone! Gypsy arrived late this evening. She has settled in and seems to be curious about everything. What a sweet girl she is! I was told she has coliced in the past so we’ll be keeping a close eye on her. She has pooped, she’s drinking, and she adores her hay.

That shroud of fear has started to fade and she does have a beautiful soul that is already starting to shine through. Someday soon I hope she will be free from the horrible memories of her past. She will never be beaten with a 2 x 4 or anything of the sort again. She is already loved.

It took her a little bit to realize the shelter wasn’t going to eat her up. I think she’ll be having some new experiences here.

Gypsy has been given the opportunity to start her life over again – without worry or fear. I’ll be spending some time with her to get to better know her over the next several days. Hopefully, we’ll figure out whatever issues she has and get to working on them.

Thank you all so very much for making it possible for Gypsy to have this opportunity.

Just got back to the rescue about an hour ago from meeting the “dangerous” mare – it’s been a long day. The mare (I’m told she is a Saddlebred) needs help – I will post more in a few minutes – I have a couple of things I must take care of and then I’ll be back to post more about her.

We are this mare’s last hope. I was told she is dangerous and would go to big cats – I’ve been promised a little time to see if we can help her. She is sedated in this picture – the vet palpated her and determined that she is not pregnant. Whew!

February 21st, 2013

Solace wasn’t feeling very well this morning. Blood tests didn’t show anything – the results were all good. His temp was up much of the day but is finally down to normal. We will keep monitoring him and if he gets worse I’m to call Dr. Ryan. Please keep him in your prayers.

This is Sisco. He had a tumor removed a few weeks ago – squamous cell carcinoma.  The site was injected with cisplatin and cream is being applied daily – he is doing great.  He will need another chemo treatment on about 4 weeks.  If we win first place in the Elder Ford of Tampa contest it would cover the cost of his next treatment.  Please vote for us and ask friends and family to also vote.  Thank you!

PLEASE help us to find a good home for Sunset – she really needs to go somewhere with plenty of shade ASAP. Sunset is a 25 yr young former PMU mare who is in need of a forever home. She has a wonderful, sweet personality. She needs to go somewhere cooler or with plenty of shade as she struggles in the heat – have very little shade. If you are interested in adopting Sunset please e-mail Melissa at bhfer.melissa. Adoption fee will be waived to approved home.

The first bracelet, made by Lisa Austin of Crazy4ponytails, is made from the hair of Solace!  The minimum bid was $40 and bidding increments are $5. B idding will end 3-3-13!  All proceeds will go directly to helping the horses!  Current Bid: $200!!

We are still in need of Arabian, Horse, and Large Horse size double Velcro flymasks. And we need milk thistle – many of the horses here get this. We usually get this from The Healing Barn – if you would like to help with this please let me know. Ideally, we would order the 11 lb. container.  And usually, when ordered and being shipped to us, a discount is given.

Calling it a day a bit early – going to meet a mare (possibly pregnant) in the morning that I’m told will be fed to big cats if a home isn’t found. Thank you all for your continued support – have a great night!

Theresa

Hollie has settled into her new home just fine. Here she is with her new family – she is adored already!

She is greatly missed here but it makes me feel really good knowing that she will be much more comfortable – the heat here just did not agree with her. Her human mom says she’s a keeper and that her eyes are truly a pathway to her soul. I agree 100%! To think that her previous owners were still driving and riding her in the condition she was in before we picked her up is just sickening. We’ll update now and then on how she is doing. To everyone that cared about, and helped her, thank you.
