Celesta had a fever of 105+ this morning. We gave her alcohol baths and she got Banamine after I spoke with Dr. Lugo. Then she stood in front of the Port-A-Cool. Her temperature went down but I noticed when I tried to give her meds via IV catheter that something appeared to be wrong with the catheter so I contacted Dr. Lugo again and asked that someone come out. Dr. Martinez came out and found the catheter had been compromised – some of the meds could have been leaking when I’d give them to her through a tiny hole at the skin level which was covered with tape. The catheter was removed and a new one was inserted another on the other side of Celesta’s neck. Blood tests were done. Tomorrow Dr. Martinez will be back to x-ray and inject antibiotics into the infected area. Depending on what is learned tomorrow her medications may be changed.

Dr. Julia Simonson (holistic vet) was also here and discussed Celesta’s case with Dr. Martinez. A couple of things have been added to what Celesta is being given and we will all regroup tomorrow after the x-rays. I’m wondering about hyperbaric therapy which I’ll discuss with the Dr. tomorrow. I hope all of this makes sense – I’m tired. It’s been a long day. I’m really looking forward to going to bed tonight. I’m happy to report that Harvey is doing well. CaryLou and Wally, well, when I came up for this update they were running around playing.

Please keep Celesta in your prayers. If anyone would like to donate to help us to help this beautiful baby you can do so via our website (www.bhfer.org) or PayPal at theresa@beautysequineerscue.org. Donations are tax deductible and no amount is too small. Thank you.

I just came in the office for the first time today to pickup something. I opened my email and there it was – this beautiful artwork with a note from Greg that assured me that angels are watching over our little Celesta. Please keep her in your prayers. I believe…

Thank you Greg – this came at a good time.

I apologize it’s been a few days since I’ve updated. It’s been crazy busy here. But here are some pictures from the last few days..

Harvey got some stitches out today. More will come out on Wednesday – hopefully all of them! He’s passing soft poop and he’s nursing just fine. He will still be on stall rest for a few weeks. Prayers do work – I believe…

I wish I had good news on Gracie. Based on x-rays taken today, the infection in Celesta’s bone (elbow) doesn’t appear better. She doesn’t have a temperature and her appetite is fine. She got another antibiotic injection in the bone today. The vet will see her again on Wednesday for another x-ray, blood work, and possibly a change in medications. I body clipped her as best as I could while she was waking up. It’s extremely hot and I’m hoping it would bring her some relief. Celesta is a good girl that could use prayers and some angels to help with her vetting. I’m trying to get Celesta on Dr. Julia’s schedule (holistic vet).

CaryLou and Wally love to play. CaryLou and his mom, Twinkle, handled being separated just fine. Both boys will be gelded soon – before the temps get any worse. Both will hopefully be getting clipped this weekend. Here is a link to a short video of them on YouTube: [youtube http://youtube.com/w/?v=E1b_tSJElDo&feature=youtu.be]

Lucy is doing really well. The higher temps do make her breathing more labored. She stays in front of the fan much of the time.

Harvey managed to get his IV catheter out over the weekend. I don’t like giving shots to babies! If all goes well, Wednesday will be his last day on them.

Baby Girl – it won’t be the same here without her. But we’ll share updates on how she is doing.

She will always have scars – they are a testament to her will to live and love for life. She’s beautiful!

LadyBug is staying at the rescue for a few weeks while her foster mom is recovering from a knee replacement.

I saw the whole thing – guess who was trying to dig their way to China? It wasn’t Penelope.

Gracie gets hand walked throughout the day. CaryLou tries hard to get Gracie’s attention but she is too interested in the grass. LOL

Harvey got a new toy on Saturday – the empty 2 liter bottle hanging in the corner. It helps to keep him entertained.

This is Stetson and Mo (Mo just came back to us today).

Please don’t forget about our current fundraiser for a ton of hay. It’s a beautiful necklace/earring set! We started out needing $500 and are down to needing $190! That’s only 19 donations of $10 each. For each $10 donated you will be entered in a chance to win the below necklace and earring set! Once we reach $500 in donations a name will be drawn! This is a custom made absolutely beautiful necklace and earring set! Intricate horse focal features a black resin base inlaid with paua, common hammer oyster, spotted conus, and penguin wing oyster shell components. 46mm x 37mm single-side horse. Necklace measures about 21”.

Donations can be made via PalPal address: theresa or via our website “Donate” page at: https://www.bhfer.org/oldsite/donate.cfm. Please help us to help the horses. Please make sure to mark what your donation is for!

Have a good night everyone – thank you for your continued support!

Good morning! We have a VERY big day today. Bittersweet. It’s going to be a tough day. Our Baby Girl, the precious filly that suffered severe head trauma and had little to no odds or survival when she came to us, is going home. Yes, she has been adopted to a family that is part of our BHFER family. I love Baby Girl so much – it will never be the same here without her. But she deserves her own human. I’ll post later. I just hope I don’t totally completely fall apart when it comes time to load.

Sincerely,
Theresa

I have been having trouble with my email and am late getting this out – this is Thursday’s update.

Harvey seemed a little irritated last night and wasn’t as active yesterday. He got an enema – he hadn’t passed any poop. His temperature was normal. His back leg that was operated on is doing well.

He did sleep like a baby – he’s precious.

This is what we found this morning – he greeted us with his beautiful baby face and his blankie.

However, I need to ask for more prayers. Harvey still hasn’t gone poop and I’m supposed to give him another enema. Part of the problem is he isn’t nursing enough. I have to be at the milk bar and point things in the right direction much of the time. He just doesn’t latch on easy. It may be because his leg is bothering him. He won’t drink from a tub or a bottle – I’ve been giving him momma’s milk from a syringe in addition to what he does get when he nurses. Gracie gets full and grumpy so I milk her to give her relief. We don’t want him dehydrated.

I called Dr. Lugo and Dr. Martinez came to the farm and examined Harvey. He got mineral oil and was tubed. We opted to take Harvey to the hospital to be started on fluids and so x-rays/ultrasound could be done.

Gracie loaded right up. Harvey and I rode in the backseat of the truck while Jenny drove – Harvey looked like a Sunday passenger on a pleasure ride. He’s a doll. They settled right into a stall at the hospital.

Saying a prayer with the little one and his momma.

X-rays/ultrasound were done and Harvey was started on fluids. Dr. Lugo and Dr. Martinez advised Harvey did, in fact, have an impaction. This was not good news.

While at the hospital – giving Harvey some time for the oil and fluids to start working, Bob called me to advise that Celesta was lame and uncomfortable. Dr. Lugo and Dr. Martinez went to the farm to examine Celesta. They did x-rays and blood work was done. Dr. Lugo returned to the hospital and advised there appeared to be an issue in Celesta’s bone in her front leg. She has been started on antibiotics. While we were still at the hospital with Harvey, Celesta’s blood work results came back which confirmed an infection. Dr. Lugo advised that he and Dr. Martinez will be at the farm in the am to x-ray the bone and inject antibiotics into the area. She will also get an IV catheter since she will be on medication for several days.

We discussed our options with Dr. Lugo and Dr. Martinez about Harvey and then headed back to the farm. Another major surgery on Harvey would be very, very hard on him. We will be running him fluids and giving him overnight to pass poop/oil. He slept most of the way back to the rescue – it was only 15 minutes away. We will regroup in the morning and pray for poop overnight.

And then, a few hours later, Harvey passed what was hopefully the impaction – we had poop!

We will continue to closely monitor Harvey and he will get fluids every 3 hours. Jenny is here and is taking the first shift until 3 am. Prayers were answered – thank you all! Let’s now pray he continues to poop. And pray that Celesta’s infection resolves quickly. And I have to say that Dr. Lugo, Dr. Martinez, and the staff at Ocala Equine Hospital have been wonderful. Everyone there just loves Harvey!

We need to ask for help with Harvey’s medical bills. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit, all volunteer, charity organization. Donations are tax deductible and no amount is too small. We can’t do what we do without help from others. Donations can be made via our website at Theresa. Please keep Harvey in your prayers. Thank you.

Theresa

An update covering the last several days –

Little Penny isn’t so little anymore…

Harvey making a new friend this morning. He tried to talk Lynn in to taking him outside for a bit but it didn’t work.

Baby kisses from Celesta….

Little Celesta – our “girly girl” gets lots of attention!

Gracie gets some outside time – this is Melissa taking her for a walk.

Beauty meeting Celesta for the first time.

She is a joy to watch. So dainty!

I actually took some time for me yesterday – a short ride on Peaches.

Katie checking in on Harvey. He is like a live wire – he is all over the place in his stall! There is no keeping him “quiet”!

Paula and her daughter, Melissa, helped out yesterday which enabled Lucy and Gentleman to get much needed baths. This is Paul and his daughter, Roxie, with Melissa giving Lucy a bath.

I just love to watch the babies run and play – Celesta is beautiful no matter what she is doing!

Melissa wondered if Celesta would let her near her. Before we knew it they were sharing secrets!

Remember Rayo?

Just look at him now! He is stunning!

Solace waiting on dinner this evening.

I’ll try to update more tomorrow – Dr. Lugo is coming to look at Harvey’s leg and change the bandage. Harvey is still like a live wire – even kicking at his momma! I’m afraid to put a ball or something in his stall – he’s just so active. I’ll ask Dr. Lugo what he thinks of him having a toy tomorrow. Maybe an empty milk jug hung from the ceiling or something. I don’t like him being so bored but I don’t want to take any chances of him injuring that leg. He bears more weight on it each day.

Have a good night everyone!

Sincerely,
Theresa

A summary of today – it’s been a long one…

Getting ready to go to the hospital this am.

We were a little late leaving – Penny and Penelope wanted help us load. LOL! Once there, Gracie went right to work on munching on her hay. “Don’t worry mommy Theresa, I’m a brave boy and everything will be ok.”

Watching was not easy. Dr. Lugo and the staff took very good care of Harvey.

Harvey’s little knee was misplaced (congenital defects are not uncommon in miniature horses) so Dr. Lugo had to move it, along with attached ligaments, etc. This was a pretty intense surgery. Good news was that the groove was present – now we pray that everything stays in place. He got quite a few internal and external stitches. Here are a couple of links that explain the condition much better than I can.

http://organichorsesupplements.com/feeding-weanlings-yearlings12-24m-nutrition/feeding-miniature-horse12-24/adolescent-mini-health-issues/

Surgery took 1.5+ hours but Harvey woke up ok and wanted to nurse. And he did put weight on his back leg for the first time!

Gracie missed Harvey and whinnied for him during surgery. She is a good momma.

And then he rested, which is good.

He needs to rest and heal. And he needs continued prayers.

Harvey was a bit uncomfortable when I had to leave the hospital late this evening but he’s getting pain and other medications. He will need to stay at the hospital for a few days where they will be monitoring and treating pain, monitoring for infection, bandaging, etc. The next couple of days are critical. He’s far from being out of the woods. He’s on an IV and is getting medications for his tummy too. Please continue to keep Harvey in your prayers. He’s a fighter but still, he’s just a baby. I hope he knows we are trying to help. Thank you all for caring about this little angel and his mom. I’ll update in the morning after I get to the hospital.

Here are a few pictures from the weekend. It’s been busy, to say the least.

Ariel still has a tummy she must be so much more comfortable now.

CaryLou is still upset with me for putting a pink flymask on him. And he’s mad at Bob for taking a picture! I didn’t make him wear it – I was just introducing it to him.

CaryLou saying hello to Celesta. We’ll have to keep our eyes on these two!

Harvey smiling at Auntie Barb. Really, he’s trying to talk her into letting him stay out "just one more minute." LOL

"But mommy Theresa I don’t want to calm down! I’m a little boy and I can’t help it – I just want to run and play!"

Wally got to go for an adventure on the other side of the fence with Jenny. He’s so cute and such a good boy.

This is likely the most calm you will ever see CaryLou! [youtube http://youtube.com/w/?v=8G4XyFEsSvU]

Twinkle with the boys – CaryLou and Wally.

Celesta tried really hard to get small enough to lay in a tub of hay.

Explaining to Gracie and Harvey that we’ve got to call it a day – their big adventure starts early in the morning.

I’d like to ask everyone for good thoughts and prayers for this little guy. He’s got such a brave and positive attitude about life. We have an early departure but I’ll post updates tomorrow from the hospital. Good night everyone and thank you for your support!

Theresa
