December 19, 2016

I share this story each year and it always means as much to me as it did the year before. It reminds me that I’m doing exactly what I’m meant to do with my life – helping horses. We help the young, the old, and all ages in between – they all matter. The old mare standing over the foal in the photo is Grandma Bones. She came to us literally skin on bones in 2006. Grandma lovingly assumed the motherly role to Chloe, a nurse mare foal. It was a heartwarming relationship that I was blessed to have witnessed. Grandma may have been an old one but she offered Chloe so much. The wisdom in her eyes and unconditional love in her heart was strong. The few short months that Grandma gave to Chloe before succumbing to issues related to her neglect and starvation were priceless.

Many lost and abused souls find their way to us – we do our very best to help them heal and come to know unconditional love. Whether they are with us for an hour, a day, a month, or years – they regain dignity and they know that they are loved. While we’ve suffered many losses over the years, we have also rejoiced in many new beginnings. And it’s only because of your help we are able to do what we do and we thank all of you for that.

Only for Love

The young couple had made their usual hurried, pre-Christmas visit to the little farm where dwelt the elderly parents with their small herd of horses. The farm had been named Lone Pine Farm because of the huge pine which topped the hill behind the farm, and through the years had become a talisman to the old man and his wife, and a landmark in the countryside. The old folks no longer showed their horses, for the years had taken their toll, but they sold a few foals each year, and the horses were their reason for joy in the morning and contentment at day’s end.

Crossly, as they prepared to leave, the young couple confronted the old folks. “Why do you not at least dispose of “The Old One.” She is no longer of use to you. It’s been years since you’ve had foals from her. You should cut corners and save where you can. Why do you keep her anyway?” The old man looked down as his worn boot scuffed at the barn floor and his arm stole defensively about the Old One’s neck as he drew her to him and rubbed her gently behind the ears. He replied softly, “We keep her because of love. Only because of love.”

Baffled and irritated, the young folks wished the old man and his wife a Merry Christmas and headed back toward the city as darkness stole through the valley. So it was, that because of the leave-taking, no one noticed the insulation smoldering on the frayed wires in the old barn. None saw the first spark fall. None but the “Old One”.

In a matter of minutes, the whole barn was ablaze and the hungry flames were licking at the loft full of hay. With a cry of horror and despair, the old man shouted to his wife to call for help as he raced to the barn to save their beloved horses. But the flames were roaring now, and the blazing heat drove him back. He sank sobbing to the ground, helpless before the fire’s fury.

By the time the fire department arrived, only smoking, glowing ruins were left, and the old man and his wife. They thanked those who had come to their aid, and the old man turned to his wife, resting her white head upon his shoulders as he clumsily dried her tears with a frayed red bandana. Brokenly he whispered, “We have lost much, but God has spared our home on this eve of Christmas. Let us, therefore, climb the hill to the old pine where we have sought comfort in times of despair. We will look down upon our home and give thanks to God that it has been spared.”

And so, he took her by the hand and helped her up the snowy hill as he brushed aside his own tears with the back of his hand. As they stepped over the little knoll at the crest of the hill, they looked up and gasped in amazement at the incredible beauty before them. Seemingly, every glorious, brilliant star in the heavens was caught up in the glittering, snow-frosted branches of their beloved pine, and it was aglow with heavenly candles. And poised on its top most bough, a crystal crescent moon glistened like spun glass. Never had a mere mortal created a Christmas tree such as this.

Suddenly, the old man gave a cry of wonder and incredible joy as he pulled his wife forward. There, beneath the tree, was their Christmas gift. Bedded down about the “Old One” close to the trunk of the tree, was the entire herd, safe. At the first hint of smoke, she had pushed the door ajar with her muzzle and had led the horses through it. Slowly and with great dignity, never looking back, she had led them up the hill, stepping daintily through the snow. The foals were frightened and dashed about. The skittish yearlings looked back at the crackling, hungry flames, and tucked their tails under them as they licked their lips and hopped like rabbits. The mares pressed uneasily against the “Old One” as she moved calmly up the hill and to safety beneath the pine. And now, she lay among them and gazed at the faces of those she loved. Her body was brittle with years, but the golden eyes were filled with devotion as she offered her gift – because of love. Only because of love.

11/30/16  Wednesday

We named the latest arrival SeAnna (pronounced see-anna) which is a variant of the name Janet. It means “Gift from God.” We lost a dear animal warrior and friend last week, Janet Lacetera, and I’m sure she would be truly honored. Janet had a heart of gold and made a difference in the lives of many horses and other animals.

seannafaceofhunger

Dr. Specht did a physical on SeAnna.  She’s a very sweet mare estimated to be about 20 years young. She has a heart murmur and a tummy with quite a bit of sand in it.

SeAnnaSpecht1

SeAnna is barely a 1 on the body condition score scale – she’s a rack of bones and is at least 300 lbs. underweight. Blood work and a fecal were done which we will review with the vet tomorrow.

SeAnna BCS-1

SeAnna has an appointment with Dr. Bess Darrow (Tune-Ups Dentistry) tomorrow to get her teeth done which she badly needs. She’s got an overbite and other issues.

SeAnna Teeth

I wanted to give her a bath today but felt it best to wait. However, I did give her a good brushing and it took me awhile to get her mane combed out.  I think she really enjoyed the attention.

SeAnnaManeBefore

SeAnna is really a beautiful girl – inside and out. It’s really very sad what she endured before coming here. But that is in the past and she’s started a new chapter in her life. No more hunger or neglect.

11/27/16

Sunday evening…
URGENT: Lots going on, but right now, we need help for this mare!

MareInNeedTinsel

The mare has an eye injury and other issues. Can anyone help sponsor her with a onetime and/or monthly donation? We can’t do this alone. We need at least six months of monthly commitments to cover her needs. I’m with her right now and want to transport her to the rescue and get a vet out ASAP.

TinselEyeBefore1

We named her Tinsel. She did well for the vet – she was examined and a CBC and chemistry panel were pulled. Her eye has a pretty horrible ulcer. The vet will be back tomorrow to put a lavage/catheter system in the eye – there are different meds that we need to administer around the clock as well. The eye and the area around it are pretty swollen and painful. Tinsel is also being treated for stomach ulcers. The vet rated her body condition score as a ‘one.’

TinselVet1

11/28/16  MONDAY MORNING…

Tinsel had a pretty good night. She does not seem to be uncomfortable. She’s a total sweetheart. Seeing her, and the eye injury during daylight, shows her condition as being a bit better but her eye does not look good at all. I’m not even sure it can be saved, but we will do our best. It’s going to take extensive treatment. Medication will be administered every couple of hours around the clock. The vet will be back out soon to assess it and potentially, put in a lavage system or perhaps make another recommendation.

TinselEyeBeforeAR

Please keep Tinsel in your prayers. We still need help with her financially – this is not going to be an inexpensive rehab.

Penny and Spirit arrived and settled in. Thanks Pamela Zarem of Double B Equine Transport for doing such a great job – as usual!  This is Spirit.

This is Penny, a 29 year old blind Belgian.

I’ll be keeping checking on the girls via camera through night. I felt better after seeing both of them find their way back to there waterer this afternoon for a drink. They will be getting physicals and hopefully Dr. Mangan can squeeze them into his schedule for eye exams. When we rescued Spirit in 2012, it was thought that she could see an itty bitty tiny sliver of light out of one eye. Penny has been blind her whole life and she’s 29 years young. They will be getting hooficures and Dr. Bess will be here next Monday to do their dental.

I hope Liz is smiling, knowing that the girls are here now. 🙂

July 18th, 2016

It’s been a very sad day.  Our dear friend, Liz, passed this morning.  She had been battling cancer.  She was a strong and proud woman that loved animals to no end.  I admired her courage and her strength, very much.  We had promised her that Spirit, Penny, and Red would be taken care of which she was very grateful for.

Dr. Lugo came and took X-rays of the side of Red’s face today.  The large mass is a tumor, and, unfortunately, infection has penetrated and eaten away at bone.  Red will get TLC and be kept as comfortable as possible until tomorrow morning when he will join Liz at Rainbow Bridge.  I choose to believe that she will be there waiting for him and that they will cross together.  Then, a new beginning for them – they will run in green pastures with no more pain along with others that have gone before them.  They will never, ever be forgotten.

So now you know how he got his name.  🙂

A “Cricket Dance” natural! Baby Whiskers had a great night and was full of himself this morning! There must be something in his milk that we don’t know about!

We appreciate Kylie staying with him last night. We will be on babysitting duty for the next few nights – at least until he’s comfy. I hope his momma is relieved to see how well he is adjusting. Please watch the short video which was taken this morning of Baby Whiskers doing the ‘Cricket Dance” and for those of you who don’t know what a “Cricket Dance” is, well, just watch!

Please remember to vote as we are slowly closing the gap between first and second place! One vote every 24 hours through July 31st may enable us to win this contest! And don’t forget to share amongst family and friends as well. Winning $10K for the horses would help so much. We have never been fortunate enough to win anything close to this amount. Even though it is a constant and exhausting struggle trying to raise money and take care of the horses all day long, it is truly worth every moment, knowing that we are making a difference in the life of each and every equine that enters through our gates. We are Beauty’s Haven Farm and Equine Rescue, a place where ‘Life begins, again!’
makeasplash
Since Bob had his heart attack, things have been a bit more challenging, but thankfully, he’s slowly getting better. However, more of my time is spent working outside which leaves very little opportunity to be at the computer or in the office to plan fundraising activities and elicit donations which have gone down dramatically. We are a small grassroots organization which consists of Bob and I who work 24/7/365, plus a few very special volunteers.  We normally have volunteer help approximately six hours a day, a few days a week. On some days, however, we have no help at all. So please believe me when I say, every vote helps!

Thank you for your support!

I love it when we have good news to share! We are Trophy Line Manely Hair Products “Rescue of the Month!”  We have been using their products for years and they are the absolute best! We use the shampoo, detangler, and conditioner and they are amazing! They are long lasting and work wonders!

Please click here which will take you to the page where you can learn more about how you can help the horses through their company. Consider giving their products a try – I’m serious when I say the products work wonders!  If you don’t have horses or a dog, you can use the products on humans, too, or perhaps consider buying some to donate to the rescue!  I know the horses at the rescue could use some – especially the detangler!  Thank you Trophy Line!

Solace was an older stud that walked away from an illegal backyard slaughter operation in south Florida. He was skin on bones which is likely why he was able to walk away.
Solace Before
Solace made an amazing recovery, but in the end, we lost him to cancer. But the time we had with him was so special – he knew he mattered and that he was loved.
Solace After

Solace’s rehab was made possible due to the generosity of our wonderful village of supporters. We are not funded by local, state, or Federal funds. We operate totally from donations. If you would like to contribute, you may do so via various means on our website: www.bhfer.org or via PayPal: bhfer@earthlink.net.

Please also remember to vote every 24 hours through July 31st to help us win $10K which would enable us to assist other horses like Solace. It’s free and easy! And it would help even more if you would share with family and friends and ask them to vote and share as well.  You do have to have a Facebook account to vote.

So please, vote.  And, sharing out and asking others to vote and share daily, making this go viral, is the ONLY way we can win the contest.

How do you get ADHD donkeys to stop long enough to pay attention? Just watch!  Guaranteed to make you smile! Want to spread the smiles? It’s free and easy – PLEASE today and everyday through July 31st and share and ask family and friends to vote for Beauty’s Haven Farm and Equine Rescue to help win $10,000 for the horses! And ask them to share and ask their friends to share and vote too. Sharing out, making this go viral with others, is the ONLY way we can win the contest!

Donks

The stress that comes with what we do is high, constantly, due to the amount of funds it takes to do what we do – many horses (and donks and whatever else comes into our path) need help. The rewards are great seeing the animals recover and find their forever home. Or, in some cases, live out their life here – horses like our little Betsy Rose that are too frail and have special needs. It takes a Village! Please help us to help more like JoJo and Jazzy – they were both orphans when they came to us. JoJo and Jazzy asked me to share this video with you in hopes it will make you smile and hopefully vote today and everyday through July 31st.

So many people say they love what we do – and we appreciate that but we need your support in this effort. Please help us do this – for the horses. Sharing and asking others to vote daily, and share, is going to be key. Thank you – have a blessed day.
PS – we do not receive any local, state, or Federal funds. We operate totally from donations.
