“Hi everybody! I’m Elyza-Rose and I’m a newbie here! Mommy Theresa says, I’m ‘home’ and I like that very much!
I’m really happy to be making new friends here. My friends where I used to live went to Rainbow Bridge and it made me sad to see them go. There wasn’t anything I could do for them – we were all hungry. I don’t know why I didn’t go with them. Mommy Theresa believes there’s a reason – she says I can make a lot of people happy just by being me. She says the world needs more happy and I’m happy to help! She promised me that I’ll never be hungry again and I believe her. I feel like I’ve known her forever!
Now, I’m making new horsey and human friends. And then there’s Freckles. And yesterday, I met Joe Camel! He’s pretty cool. Freckles said we’re going to start sharing camp fire stories at night (without a fire of course) like they used to do with Betsy Rose – especially when she had to stay in a sling. I don’t know anything about that but I think they’re going to tell me. But I have heard a lot of really nice things about Betsy Rose. Did you know there’s a sign in her stall that says, ‘Believe?’
I really appreciate y’all caring about me. I didn’t think I’d ever trust humans again especially after watching them let my friends starve and die. And I knew that I wasn’t going to last much longer. But then one day, a nice lady came and took me out of that terrible place! She told me that she knew just where I needed to go to get better. I didn’t feel very good and I was feeling worse and weaker by the day. But that lady cared enough to get involved and here I am! I learned to never give up and to believe and I want to help others to believe too!
I’ve got to go now. We’ve got lots to do. Jazzy pulled off JoJo’s mask and the sun is out. I hope JoJo doesn’t get into trouble.
Have a good day and remember to never give up and to believe!”

Elyza-Rose saw Dr. Julia last week. She somehow managed to injure the lower eyelid of her right eye. She didn’t need stitches, but we wanted to make certain that the eye itself wasn’t injured.

Freckles enjoys spending time with Elyza and introducing her to more friends. Today, I found Camel telling his story about how he got here and about some of his past adventures. It was amazing – Elyza-Rose seemed to like the little ones and grazed very intently, making sure not to step on any of them.

Elyza did, however, plant her foot in another feed tub again today. According to Freckles, one of the donkeys told her a couple of days ago, that if she stood in a feed tub, a human would feel badly that the tub was empty and then put food in it. Those boys!

We went for a few walks in a grassy paddock and Elyza absolutely loved it! I think she’s gained some weight already! I know her coat looks shaggy – I clipped her in a hurry but I wanted to get that thick and unhealthy Cushing’s coat off her. I wanted to inspect for lice, ticks, etc. I haven’t had any time to clean up the poor clip job, but at least she feels better.

“So what do y’all think of my new blankie? Mommy Theresa says this color is perfect on me! It felt like 38 degrees on Friday morning, but I was toasty warm.
This mask thingy looks a bit silly on me, I know. But it’s supposed to stop me from scratching my eyes. I wish they made them the same color as my blankie. Hopefully, I won’t have to wear it for long.”

Yes, Elyza-Rose, you’re “home”![clear]
Lastly, thanks to all of you, we won the SunState Federal Credit Union Charity of the Month Contest for the month of February! The $1000 prize could not have come at a better time and will greatly assist with the purchase of hay and/or other needs for our beloved herd.
We are still awaiting the results of the Eagle Rare Life contest which will hopefully, be announced within the next few days!

The barn just isn’t the same without Cookie and Betsy Rose. Ruby gets more attention now but I’ll bet she, too, wishes her four legged friends were still with us.
SeAnna has found her loving, forever home! She is a pasture pal to a blind gelding. The first time they met they clicked! Both appear to be very happy!
Kiana is another beautiful girl that is looking for a forever home as a trail horse. She’s getting some training sessions in with Dan Rexroad!
Penny, a 30+ year old blind Belgian, looks gorgeous in her cold weather blanket. And believe me, it’s been really cold!
I miss her so much.
We always look forward to when

The horses were happy to get out of their blankets on Monday. We’re happy the temps are up a bit but it is predicted that the cold weather will be returning this weekend.
Cricket really seemed to appreciate her blanket last week during the cold temps and freezing rains.
CaryLou showing off and strutting his stuff in his Betsy Rose poinsettia bows.
Precious Lucy, our mini with big head disease, showing off her Poinsettias.
Jiminy sure is looking good!
Cricket was giving me advice on how to unload the hay that weighs much more than I do!
Love it so much when the horses are very happy with their hay. Every horse in this photo is looking for a forever home.
JoJo is one of the most intuitive and caring donks I’ve ever known. This was taken a couple of days after Betsy Rose left us. He just wanted hugs.
I walked out of the feed room to move Beauty back to her paddock for the evening. I looked up to the sky and found a beautiful surprise.
Betsy Rose, four years ago today, on January 1, 2014.
I listened to the weather forecast yesterday instead of my little voice and only blanketed a few of the horses last night. I figured we could do so this am with the help of volunteers but I awoke to light rain, winds, freezing cold temperatures and wet horses! The temperature continued to drop throughout the day and the drizzle wouldn’t stop. Horses came in four at a time to dry so they could get blanketed. We can deal with the cold but not with the added rain and wind. The weather won’t be better for several days and a few people have even mentioned that there is light snow in the forecast! ☃️
Penny does not seem to mind the frigid temperatures as she happily grazes in her fine new blanket!
This little Arabian gelding is our senior resident.
Emma’s cute little nose is still a bit lazy on one side due to nerve damage sustained from her gunshot injuries.
Silly Ruby doesn’t seem to mind the cold at all…but then again, she is tucked away in the cozy barn!
There is still time to order our 2018 Calendar. Please
It seems as if we are constantly asking for help and that isn’t easy for me. But we are a charity which operates solely from donations and grants and we must depend upon help from others in order to make a difference in the lives of our horses.
We are also in need of a pallet (50 bags) of Fibre-Beet from Emerald Valley. We are down to our last bag and are borrowing a bag from a friend until we can get our pallet. Buying it by the pallet, which usually lasts a year, is the most economical way in which to purchase Fibre-Beet (even with the cost of shipping). Betsy Rose, Little E and the other special needs horses that comprise our beloved little herd are fed this along with a ration balancer and needed supplements. Betsy Rose and E are fed five times a day (smaller portions) – they are hard keepers. Betsy Rose has Cushings and a history of choke so she has to be fed a soft diet. Little E has teeth, but they are so worn down, that he, too, must have a soft diet and when the weather is like it is now, he gets gas colic quite often unless he’s on Fibre-Beet. When we have colicky horses, this is a great way in which to keep them hydrated. Fibre-Beet is excellent for horses that have, or are at risk for, laminitis, ulcers, and Cushing’s. A bag retails for $41 but we get a good discount and while we do have some funds already set aside, we still need help as the estimated cost is $1100.
We were truly blessed to learn on Friday that two wonderful supporters have come forth to offer a most generous Match Game, whereby, all donations up to $1500 will be matched dollar for dollar to assist with the cost of the replacement batteries as well as a pallet of Fibre-Beet. If you would like to play the Match Game, you may do so via various means here on our website or via our PayPal address: bhfer@earthlink.net. If donating via PayPal, please designate your donation to, ‘Golf Cart/Feed Match Game.’ If you select the tab for ‘Friends or Family,’ no fees will be deducted from your contribution. Please be assured that all donations are greatly appreciated and no amount is ever considered as being too small.

This is how our day started on Friday. Peggy Sue was down on her bad side and couldn’t get up. When this happens, Peggy Sue doesn’t panic – she just lays there and waits for us to help her. We roll her over and she usually rests for a few minutes and then gets up on her own and runs off. She can’t bend her back leg – it’s stiff – much like a peg leg.
Before Peggy Sue came to us, she was giving birth and her humans tried to pull her baby out. Peggy Sue’s pelvis fractured in three places. She’s a happy little mare that rules the others and she reminds them of that often. We have to put her in a sling to have her feet done, but she doesn’t mind at all.
Peggy Sue is a prime example of why we insist that there is a human on the farm at all times.
Aaleyah Belle’s infamous tongue.
Jiminy and Cricket continue to improve each day. Dr. Mangan (DVM, DACVO) from AVS in Gainesville checked out their eyes and all is good! Cricket’s old eyelid injury is doing great! Dr. Mangan has been part of our awesome care team for years – even before he went to AVS – when he worked at UF. You can learn more about him by
Dr. Specht was also at the farm last week to examine Waylon.

We are so very thankful to Jayne O’Brien Myrick for opening her heart and home to Kandi and Shaker! Many thanks to Pamela Zarem of Double B, for transporting the girls to their new home. And many thanks to Susie and Catherine for helping with the transportation costs.
Kandi and Shaker’s life before they arrived at Beauty’s Haven in 2010, was a horrible one – it was a large hoarding case of many horses. Shaker survived (many didn’t) with a baby (Kandi) on her side and she was pregnant again. Kandi is her best friend – it means the world to us that they will forever remain together. This was Shaker, lying helplessly on the ground, a few days before they were released to us. Kandi, as a foal, was standing nearby with an older mare named Asiya – both watched on as Shaker suffered through colic. If you look closely, you can see the remains of others that sadly did not survive, scattered in the background.
Michie and Bruce visited last week! We haven’t seen them since their last visit ten years ago! It was great to see them once again and Betsy Rose truly loved the extra attention.
Ruby just loves it when Katie visits with her.
It was really great to see Barbara over the weekend!
