June is a very special month for us here at the rescue. Betsy Rose, a very special pony, came to us on June 14th, 2013 and JoJo and Jazzy’s birthdays are in June. We usually have a birthday party each year to honor Betsy Rose as well as to recognize JoJo and Jazzy’s birthday, but this year, we didn’t have time to put it together. For those who do not know Betsy Rose, and her story, there is a link on our website blog where you can learn about the day she arrived as well as the years we had with her. https://bhfer.org/pony-mare-update/

Betsy Rose was much more than that one special horse who comes into your life – she was a friend, teacher, comic, helper, healer and a heroine. Her story about overcoming incredible odds is one that should never be forgotten – she will never be forgotten.

Betsy, literally, helped many people to believe in themselves, to overcome, and to never give up. Sadly, we lost Betsy on December 22nd, 2017, due to her inability to swallow. With tears flowing, I held her tightly as she peacefully transitioned to Rainbow Bridge while I promised her that her legacy would forever live on.

Recently, one of our supporters notified us about a pony mare that desperately needed help. As she viewed the photo of the pony, she immediately thought of Betsy Rose. The pony had been run through multiple auctions as a no-sale and her next stop would have been Mexico where horses are slaughtered for human consumption . When I saw a photo of the mare, my heart skipped a few beats and memories of our Betsy Rose came flooding back. In honor of our Betsy, we quickly made the decision to rescue this precious little pony mare providing she was able to make the trip here. And with that, a new story begins.

We named her Dusti Rose. She arrived thin, her coat was unhealthy, her mane and tail unkept, and her feet had not been trimmed in months. Like Betsy, she has vision loss in her right eye. She had multiple auction stickers and/or glue from old stickers in her mane, on her backside, and in her tail.

Dusti’s personality is so sweet – she’s almost like a younger version of Betsy. She warms the heart and is good for the soul. And like Betsy Rose, she appreciates everything done for her.  She really enjoyed her first bath.

With all of the losses we have had over the past year or so, the toll it has taken on my heart has been great. I’m still trying to accept the loss of my heart horse, Beauty. There are times that the tears flow and nothing takes away the pain. But I do believe that, sometimes, God puts people, and animals, in our lives just when we need them (or they need us) the most. I think we needed little Dusti as much as she needed us. From the moment I met her, she had my heart. We have promised her that we will make all of her tomorrows everything her past should have been.

We have much going on here, 24/7, and it’s challenging to post updates which impacts our presence on social media which in turn, impacts donations. It’s a very stressful time. Grants are hard to come by, but we constantly apply.

However, we do have some good news!  A couple of dear friends and supporters have joined together to offer a $6000 Match Game!

All donations up to $6000 will be matched dollar for dollar… $5 will morph into $10, $50 will morph into $100, and so on.  These funds are desperately needed and can help us recover from vet, facility, maintenance and equipment repairs, as well as other expenses. We also need assistance with the ongoing expenses for the feral cat colony that lives on the farm.

If you would like to play the Match Game, you can contribute via the ‘Donate’ button below. All donations are tax deductible and no amount is ever too small. We will be posting a thermometer on our social media pages on a daily basis, and in upcoming emails, that will indicate the total amount of donations received across all platforms (BHFER website, Facebook, Instagram, etc.) as of that day/time. We would also ask that you please share this out to family and friends.

A very special “Thank You” to our dear friends who are making this Match Game possible.

We thank all of you for your continued generosity, love and support.

Sincerely,
Theresa

Walker and Waylen did great for their eye exams last week. Walker has some old scarring in his left eye but, thankfully it doesn’t bother him. Both of these very sweet boys have gained weight and are looking good!

Jo, however, could use some good thoughts and prayers today. Her dementia was on full display this morning. She has been given medication and is being hosed down. Her best friend of thirty-plus years, Dancer, is never far away. I’ve spoken to the vet and I’ve done everything I could. If Jo takes a turn for the worse, the vet will be called out. Jo, presently, is swallowing, so we’re on the right track.

Jo’s Symptoms: Dazed, aimless wandering when she did move, standing looking lost, confusion, staggering, withdrawn, not swallowing, unable to pull her tongue back into her mouth, a moment of being totally startled as if she’d just come out of a period of “nothingness.”

Jo’s Treatment: Banamine, craniosacral massage – bending the neck to get release, using what I call a ‘thumper’ adjusting tool on her and observation time.

Thank you!

Sincerely,
Theresa

As we reflect upon our blessings during this most wonderful time of the year, we thought that it would be most fitting to introduce each member of our beloved little herd, our precious band of “Velvet Nosers” to our many new friends and supporters in the forthcoming days.

As you read the many poignant stories about each of our precious equines, we hope that you will consider donating an item from their respective wish lists in order to make all of their Christmas dreams come true. And if you are unable to do so at this time, please know that we consider each and every one of you, a cherished member of the Beauty’s Haven Family as well.

Thank you all for your amazing generosity, love and support.

Wishing everyone a Happy Holiday Season!

Annual Trail Ride for the Horses

Many thanks to those who came out to our trail ride this past Saturday. It was the one thing I’d been looking forward to since our last ride. We didn’t have a ride last year due to Covid. This year, it was scheduled earlier in the year but was postponed due to an incoming hurricane. Unfortunately I had to stay at the rescue to take care of Jo, but Elizabeth did a great job managing it alone on very short notice. I really appreciate her and everyone who participated and donated. And Karen did a great job putting together some really nice raffle items. Hoping we get a ride planned again for the spring.

Sincerely,
Theresa

As we near the end of 2021, we have so much for which to be thankful.

We are thankful to our wonderful village of supporters as well as our amazing team of volunteers, who worked tirelessly to afford us the opportunity of granting a second chance at life to these 21 precious souls who have brought us such an inordinate amount of happiness and joy: Valley Girl, Buckshot, Remi, a precious newborn donkey; Allie, our mischievous Marmalade Tabby; Simba; Elvis and Ford; Miles, who without a doubt was sent to us through the intervention of our beloved Penny; Scooter; Kiah, the sweet little pup who was found scared and alone in the middle of the night with a badly injured paw; Ace, our beautiful Selle Francais; Belle Star; Lady Sophia and Candace; Piper, our sweet little dumpster kitten; three precious bunnies; our Christmas saves, Lennie and Michele; and lastly, Shai, our final rescue of 2021.

But as in the Circle of Life, our joy was tinged with sadness when our beloved Penny, Ace, Nash, Haley, Jasmin and Cleo, a precious newborn kitten, transitioned to Rainbow Bridge, where we know deep in our hearts, that they are all now happily romping about with the Heavenly Herd.

Beauty’s Haven unfortunately had a number of horses returned to the rescue this year, through no fault of their own. We are thankful that they are home with us and we have promised them that they will always be forever safe and loved.

We are so truly honored by your love and support which enables us to be the voice of those sweet and innocent souls who are unable to speak for themselves. And for that, we remain eternally grateful.

Wishing everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year.
Theresa

“Life is about determination. Don’t give up because of the obstacles… Regardless of what obstacles face you, just keep going! Go through, go around, jump over – but never give up!”

A registered Thoroughbred mare named ‘Currently Sue,’ foaled during the early morning hours of May 3, 2008. Her filly was born with a condition known as wry nose syndrome which prevented the foal from nursing and receiving the vital colostrum that she needed after birth, thus making her chance of survival extremely slim.

That very same day, Theresa received a phone call from an individual expressing concern about the filly and her Momma, as they were in imminent danger of being shot that afternoon. Theresa immediately, contacted the owner to see if they would surrender Momma and baby to Beauty’s Haven and they were more than happy to oblige – it would save them the time and energy of having to dig a grave. Without delay, Theresa went to pick up Momma and her filly and transport them to the rescue.

Time was of the essence – the baby was several hours old and hadn’t received any nourishment or colostrum – she could not nurse due to her wry nose. Momma had obviously, given her baby all the nourishment she could in utero, as she, herself, was merely skin on bones and simply had no milk to offer her baby.

Both were promptly vetted and the filly received plasma and colostrum. Momma, who we lovingly, called ‘Momma Sue,’ was put on a re-feeding program. There are no words to describe how blessed we felt as we watched the look of worry and hunger in Momma’s Sue’s eyes morph into a look of gratefulness, comfort, and relief. It was obvious that she adored her baby girl.

On this very same day, Eight Belles, a determined and kind, steel-gray 3 year-old filly, ran in the Kentucky Derby against 19 colts. Against the odds, Eight Belles finished second on the 1 1/4 mile track, following the winner, Big Brown. Sadly, within seconds of crossing the finish line, Eight Belles broke down and had to be euthanized.

In Eight Belles’s memory, we named Momma Sue’s determined little filly, ‘Aaleyah Belle,’ who would have to overcome immeasurable odds in order to survive.

Aaleyah Belle, thankfully, was able to drink from a bottle. As soon as she was stable and stronger, she needed to have surgery at the University of Florida to correct her wry nose which would forever, improve her quality of life. A few weeks later, Aaleyah Belle, accompanied by her beloved Momma, was transported to UF where her nose would be surgically corrected, as much as possible, thus allowing her to run and play with all the other horses.

Her recovery was successful, and as she grew stronger and her breathing became easier, our sweet little girl started kicking up her heels. She showed the world and all those who loved her, a very special ‘Cricket Dance.’ Aaleyah became a dancer of joy, a spirited young girl with a full life ahead of her. Aaleyah Belle was born with an innate beauty, a beauty that encompasses the true meaning of grace, happiness, and love. Aaleyah is yet another, Beauty’s Haven miracle.

In Honor of Aaleyah’s 12th Birthday, a wonderful Auntie has come forth and is offering a Match Game whereby all donations up to $300 will be matched dollar for dollar, which will be applied to this week’s Hay Run.

If you would like to forward a donation in Honor of Aaleyah’s birthday, you may do so here on our website or via PayPalMe. If donating via PayPal, please designate your donation to ‘Aaleyah’s Birthday.’ If you select the tab, ‘Send Money to Friends or Family,’ no fees will be deducted from your contribution. All donations are tax deductible and no amount is ever too small.

Thank you, all, so very much!

We’re calling this precious mare, Niña. She settled in well overnight and made new friends from a couple of fence lines away. Yesterday, she made new human friends who really liked her.

Gail held Niña while Dr. Julia did an exam on her and she was very cooperative. She’s underweight, has a heart murmur, her temperature was a bit low, and her teeth need attention by Dr. Bess. Niña also has a couple of summer sores that we’ve started treating and we’re so very thankful that we have a pair of Silver Whinnys (SoxForHorses) on hand that fit her. Dr. Julia estimates her to be at least 30 years young. We will know more when the blood test results come back, hopefully, tomorrow.

Many thanks to those who have donated to help this grand older gal! She’s going to need ongoing support so if you’re interested in signing up to become a monthly sponsor for her (no matter what the amount is – lots of little bits add up to make good things happen), you may do so here on our website.

You can also forward a donation via PayPalMe. If donating via PayPal, please designate your contribution to ‘Niña.’ If you select the tab, ‘Send Money to Friends or Family,’ no fees will be deducted from your contribution. All donations are tax deductible and no amount is ever too small.

Thank you, all, so very much!

This is an urgent matter and we would appreciate your help. We’ve been hit very hard these past few months with horses that were adopted out years ago but had to come back to us (through no fault of their own). We try hard to match the right horse to the right human in situations where we are assured that the horse(s) will become a permanent family member and have a loving forever home. But, as we’ve experienced over the last year or so, people’s priorities change, illness is real, jobs require relocation and they can’t take the horse(s), the adopter’s interests may have moved on to something new, etc.

Two Arabian mares, Nadia and Venus, were returned by their adopter who had been ill. She could no longer care for these sweet girls so she sent them back to us. Sadly, the adopter passed away last week. She found comfort knowing that Nadia and Venus would be okay.

Recently, we had to reclaim two Arabian geldings, Mo and Derek, that were at high risk due to a breach of contract – it was not a good experience for us, or the horses, but we are grateful that both were located and are now safe here at the rescue. They are both undergoing rehabilitation.

And now – the urgency. There are three horses (Anastasia, Jack, and Velvet) that were adopted out in 2010 that need to be re-homed ASAP and we are simply full. We have no paddocks in which to put these horses and, even if we did, we don’t have the needed manpower or resources to care for them. We have never been in this position before and it is weighing heavily on our hearts and minds. Please help by sharing this email in an effort to find good homes for them. The paint, Jack, has an adoption application pending.

If anyone has questions specific to any of the horses, please contact Ruth at ruth.green@hotmail.com or 352-262-0570. If there are questions about the adoption process, you can learn more about it on the ADOPTABLE HORSES page of our website.

Introducing Yertle, one of our latest rescues that was found in one of our paddocks.

“All mine!” Yertle cried. “Oh, the things I now rule! I’m king of the ‘horses!’ And I’m king of a mule!” ~ Dr. Seuss

Needless to say, Yertle was not king of the horses for very long! We took him down the road to a safe pasture with a small pond as he surely, would have been trampled by the horses had he remained in the paddock.

“Mommy Theresa if you look at the time on your phone, I’ll bet it’s about a minute before lunchtime. That’s just enough time for you to get my lunch and be back here on time for the noon delivery!” Little E is one smart little horse!

Betsy Rose always enjoyed grazing in the morning sun. What a perfect day it was! We will forever be thankful for the time we had with her.

[dropcaps] T [/dropcaps] hese two beautiful souls that arrived at Beauty’s Haven a few days ago, are a prime example of irresponsible breeding at its finest. The baby appears to be approximately six months old and she hasn’t been handled. The mare isn’t her mom but she was exposed to a stud and may be pregnant – she’s thin but she has quite a tummy coupled with a bag.  Neither of these precious horses want anything to do with humans – they are going to be a project. I can’t wait to get that horrible coat off the baby.  She must have been miserable during our recent, “feels like 108 degrees” days.  Once we get her coat off, she’s going to be thin, too, but not for long! Both the mare, and baby, are currently in quarantine.

If you would like to sponsor either of these sweet little ones or contribute to their initial veterinary, farrier and/or dental expenses, you may do so via various means at https://bhfer.org/donate/. If donating via PayPal, please designate your donation to: ‘New Arrivals.’ If you select the tab, ‘Send Money to Friends or Family,’ no fees will be deducted from your contribution. All donations are tax deductible and no contribution is ever considered as being too small.

Thank you all, for always being there for the Beauty’s Haven herd.

April 3rd, 2018

Due to no fault of their own, Shaker and Kandi need to find a new home(s). The adopter, who loves them very much, needs to focus on her own health (prayers for her would be appreciated) at this time. She is sad about this situation but is grateful to know the girls will only go to a home(s) that we approve. We truly appreciate the care and love that their adopter has shown them.

In 2010, Shaker came to us pregnant along with her foal, Kandi. There was an older Arabian mare that was like a mother to them that we also took in – we named her Asiya. They came from a large case in South Florida where many horses did not survive. The day we met Shaker, she was colicking and it was horrible – we didn’t know if she’d make it or not. It was a very messy situation – the owner was a hoarder and authorities were involved, but thankfully, Asiya, Kandi and Shaker made it out alive.

Shaker was born in April 2005. Kandi was born in April 2010. They are National Show Horse crosses. Shaker has been trained under saddle but, until she has more experience and time under saddle, she would be best with an experienced rider. Kandi hasn’t been under saddle in about 2 1/2 years and she had limited time under saddle back then. Both were trained using natural horsemanship methods.

We will waive adoption fees – what is most important is finding the right forever home. We are full and a bit overwhelmed. We have a few here that need extra daily care at this time – we need more volunteers. While we would love to keep Shaker and Kandi together, they can be separated under the right circumstances. They are located near Bell, FL.

We need help to find these girls a good home(s) ASAP. Please share this out and ask anyone that may be seriously interested to contact us at bhfer_admin@earthlink.net. Thank you.
