Updates from this past week…
Wednesday. Some tests were run on Lucy and Dr. Ryan took the trach stitches out.
Lucy still likes to give kisses. Everyone loves Lucy. She is doing well. We are waiting for her blood test results to come back from UF.
Ricky, Lucy’s bird friend, visiting with her outside of her stall.
Sisco’s eye was ok. He has allergies to the no-see-ums.
Yesterday (Thursday):
I worked offsite all day – it was a difficult day. I returned home with this request of everyone: None of us know if our own tomorrow will come. Please make provisions for your animals so that should something happen to you they are safe and provided for. Be it with other family, friends, a trusted rescue or sanctuary. Love them enough to make sure they are not orphaned and without.
Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers today. And many thanks those that work in the background, helping, even with toughest of things. You are all angels and I am very blessed that you are part of my life – part of this rescue. Some days in the life of a rescuer are very difficult – the highs, the lows – it really is a never ending roller coaster ride. But I can’t imagine doing anything else.
Thursday evening – it was good to be home. CaryLou had his catheter removed which he is very thankful for (so are we). His trach is still an issue.
Today so far (Friday): Meet Cerinade. AKA Ceri. Very sweet girl that has a bit of rehab ahead of her. She is only 16 but looks and moves like she is much older. Ceri needs sponsors – would anyone like to help? She needs farrier work, dental, vaccinations, etc. Any amount would help and no amount is too small.
Please don’t forget about our raffle items!
Beautiful black horse head necklace, graciously donated by Marie R.
Proceeds from this auction will go directly to the care of the horses at Beauty’s Haven Farm and Equine Rescue.

Vintage brass locket and earring set graciously donated and made by Debbie F.
Per Debbie: This lovely set features a vintage brass textured locket. I have accented the locket with a detailed vintage brass stamping with raised features of a horse’s head with riding crop. The vintage brass locket and stamping have the original patina which has mellowed to a lovely warm color. The inside of the locket has a copper rim. Locket measures 1.25". A beautiful vintage 1950’s glass jewel in Siam Ruby compliments the locket. Total drop of jewel and locket is 2". I have attached them to an 18" fine gold plated solid brass rolo chain with a gold plated brass lobster clasp for closure. The earrings feature very special vintage 1940’s solid brass horse heads which measure 1/2". They also have their original patina which has mellowed to a lovely warm color. They dangle beneath rare vintage 1950’s Swarovski crystals in Siam Ruby. I have attached the dangles to gold plated solid brass lever back ear wires to complete the look. Earrings have a total measurement of 2".

Lucy’s new friend – Fancy
Well, Lucy has a new friend – meet Fancy. This little girl has lived her last five years alone in a small backyard of a home in the city. Although, she did have a little dog to play with. Her name is Fancy. You should have seen Fancy when she got off the trailer and saw other horses! Her eyes got big and she started talking!
I think Lucy claims Fancy as her own. LOL! Fancy got clipped and she will get her feet done this week. She is still talking! We have mini’s out the wazoo! We are FULL!!! No room for not even one more mini so I hope we don’t get any calls.
Sincerely,
Theresa

Princess was top 10 in Working Cow horse in Canada and she went US Top 10 in lead line at the youth nationals in Oklahoma! She won the IAHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Championship two years in a row…1991 and 1992! What a mare! I adore her! She’s been with us for many years – wow!

Today’s needs
I want everyone to know how much we appreciate you and your support – we have received enough donations (including pledges) to cover the needs posted this am! Dr. Ryan had to reschedule until tomorrow.
Sisco’s eye, well, the silly boy seems to be allergic to the no-see-ums and he does wear a flymask. He had one on this am but when volunteers Ginny and Marie went to change masks today his was off – courtesy of Nevada, I’m sure. That’s when they saw his eye was swollen. I went out and got him and took him to the barn where he will be staying until further notice. He got some meds per Dr. Ryan and is happily munching on hay.
On the golf cart. It’s an electric 1998 Yamaha with lift kit and 700 amp controller. We use it to pull the poop spreader, among other things. I don’t think it wouldn’t be less expensive to replace it – we just replaced the batteries a few months ago to the tune of $1000! It’s not inexpensive to maintain but it gets used a LOT!
If anyone calls and I don’t answer, or if I do answer and there is silence or a totally non-understandable voice that answers, it’s because my voice is gone 75% of the time. Still coughing and allergies are bad.
I am so relieved that today’s posted needs are covered – that helps tremendously. Thank you all so very much!
Sincerely,
Theresa

Uh oh…
Ok, so the day took a turn. I’m on my way down to look at Sisco’s eye which is swollen.
Just got off phone with the golf cart repair guy. We have to replace the controller and need $800+ to do so (includes labor). Any of the volunteers here can attest to how valuable this golf cart is to daily operations. Does anyone know of any place that would offer a grant to cover something such as this?
These are the kinds of things that it is very difficult to raise funds for so I’m wondering if there may be a grant we could apply for? Please share and maybe someone has an idea?
Sincerely,
Theresa

Forgot…
I forgot to include that we need a load of shavings – the pregnant mares stay in all night and Twinkle/CaryLou also stay in during the hot part of the day.
A load (60 bags) of shavings is $230.
Would anyone like to help?
We need just 23 people to donate $10 and we can get the shavings – we need them before the weekend.

Theresa

Lucy, Solace and Others Need Help with Vet Costs
April 9th, 2013
Solace has a new snotty nose with an odor to it. He hasn’t run a fever but he’s not as interested in his meals and just seems somewhat “off”. We’d like to have Dr. Ryan examine, scope, him and do a culture to determine if he’s got something new going on. This would be about $150. Would anyone like to help him? Just 15 people donating $15 each would cover this.
Dr. Ryan will be examining Lucy today, checking out her trach, and pulling some bloodwork. This will be about $110. Just 11 people at $10 each will cover it.
Two horses that we had to bring back need vetting and this was not in our budget. One needs an exam and CBC which will cost about $92. The other needs more – I’m guessing $125 with Dr. Ryan and he will also need Dr. Julia Simonson to work on him for about $125. Any and all help with these two would be so greatly appreciated. I’d like to get Dr. Julia out here as soon as possible. She’s our holistic vet.
Donations can be called directly into the vet’s office at 352-237-6151. Please specify if you call how you would like your donation applied – to a specific horse or to our account in general. We truly appreciate your continued support. If anyone would like to help with any of these needs you can donate via PayPal address bhfer@earthlink.net or via our website page at www.bhfer.org/donate. Just indicate what your donation is to be used for. Donations are tax deductible and no amount is too small. We operate totally from donations – your support makes what we do possible. Please share this out. I don’t like asking for help but I have to. Thank you!

Theresa

Weekend and other update…
April 8th, 2013
I hope everyone had a great weekend. The weather here was perfect! Here are a few pictures and updates on a few of the horses.
Sisco yesterday – his cancer site looks good. We are still applying the cream. Dr. Porter says at this time he does not think Sisco will need another treatment. Sisco is so funny – like a big kid!
The other Cisco – he’s looking for a forever home. He is a Haflinger cross.
Little CaryLou is all boy! He keeps his momma on her toes!
Lucy is doing ok. She’s had some tremors Friday and Saturday evenings which caused me a bit of worry. Dr. Ryan will be out tomorrow to examine her and to pull some blood. When she was released from the hospital she had hyperlipemia and hepatic lipidosis – her prognosis was poor and very guarded for survival. She wasn’t eating or drinking, had body tremors, had aspiration pneumonia, and had been running fevers – the odds were against her. Upon arrival, I immediately modified her diet and put her on Well-Gel and other supplements. Giving her IV fluids/meds was very important so you can imagine how we felt when the vein on one side of her neck collapsed – the other had collapsed at the hospital. After the other side collapsed here, the catheter was placed in a remaining good vein in her leg. But then that collapsed. It has been a roller coaster ride but we continue to keep the faith and we have hope. Lucy’s attitude has been bright and positive which helps tremendously. She is monitored closely – her poop, water intake, appetite, attitude, temp. I have to laugh at her – she’s feeling better enough to now run the other way when she seems one of us coming with meds in our hands! LOL! Lucy adores our little tank, CaryLou. This evening Twinkle finally allowed CaryLou to visit with Lucy without her supervision. Lucy isn’t out of the woods, not by far, and her recovery is going to happen over many months. Please continue to pray for her.
Silver Belle has made new friends and is doing really well. She will be starting school soon. I don’t know what Patti and Silver Belle were looking at in this picture but aren’t they beautiful?
Rayo is also doing well and is enjoying school!
Remember Lexi? She is Lacey’s 2 year old and Dora’s full sister. She is also doing great – a very beautiful girl.
We need a load of shavings – the pregnant mares stay in all night and Twinkle/CaryLou also stay in during the hot part of the day. A load (60 bags) of shavings is $230. Would anyone like to help?

Today!
What a busy and productive day already! Poop being scooped, big paddocks being dragged, fence repairs being done, meds given, stalls cleaned, and a load of hay just arriving. Laundry done, house somewhat clean, visitors are coming too!
Sunset has gone to Pam’s and will be leaving for her new home with Lisa in Colorado in a few days. What a doll she is – and we are so blessed to know she will never want for anything again! Two horses came back yesterday.
Lisa Stern is hosting a charity benefit for us at The Grape Ape tonight – thank you Melissa Ingram and Lisa and The Grape Ape! Check it out! https://www.facebook.com/events/535991579744343/
New video of CaryLou on Facebook playing this am – hard to believe as good as he looks and plays that he has a somewhat serious condition. We are quickly reminded by his Darth Vader breathing. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10200852684100510&set=vb.1266434164&type=2&theater
Jenny and I will be leaving soon to catalog a herd of Arabians that need homes. And I need to get back home – Katie is going to the prom tonight! Have a wonderful day everyone!

Theresa
