No worries! Freckles is always close by! Sometimes she entertains the baby boys. Betsy Rose’s appetite is back and she’s feeling better. I think she over extended herself getting up and down and the heat got to her too.

Double rainbow over the rescue this am!
Betsy Rose wasn’t interested in food again today and looked like she just didn’t feel well so I called Dr. Julia out. She is doing some blood tests and we hope to have results this evening. Maybe I’m a worry wart but better safe than sorry.
All of the boys were good today for their hooficures. That’s Pamela Zarem holding them for the farrier.

Sept 1st 2013: Friday & Saturday Update
I’m not sure why I didn’t get this published last weekend – sorry about that. Update from a week ago!
Betsy Rose went on a walk with me around the house last evening. She was exploring!
The weekend really started out well for Daisy and Boo! Shade and grass and lots of TLC!
Bob and I went to visit Momma Daisy and Baby Boo today! The area around Daisy’s eye is still very swollen but she nevertheless, seems very comfortable. They both stuck their noses up for kisses. Love those long ears!

Betsy Rose Tue pm and Wed am Update
Wed pm:
Betsy Rose perked up a little once the sun started to go down. She’s drinking which is very good but she has very little appetite. I’m still often asked if she will be ok, if her time of caution past, etc. and I continue to answer – I don…’t know. Many of our past starvation cases hit a bump like this at the 6 – 8 week rehab mark. The healing process can’t be pushed – her body is adjusting in many ways. Her muscles are starting to build – there are changes in chemistry, metabolism, etc. It’s a delicate balance and takes a lot of attention to detail. Some asked a couple of questions tonight about what she is getting – yes, she has been treated for ulcers since the day she arrived and she gets milk thistle for liver function which is so very important. She still gets the StressPak. Betsy Rose is far from out of the woods. It could take years for the effects of the severe starvation and neglect that she endured to be known. I’m happy with small baby steps and each moment she is with us is a blessing to be cherished.
I apologize once again for not responding to emails, PM’s, etc. and not publishing pictures I keep intending to. Once again, the day has been very busy and it’s about over. I’m tired and headed to bed. Please keep Betsy Rose in prayers. She knows she is loved, always. Thank you all for caring about this special little mare.
Betsy Rose did graze for a little bit this evening. You can see she isn’t feeling well. The good news is that her HR is better. It was 120+ the day she came to us and has maintained around 56. Today was the best it’s been – 44 BPM.

Betsy Rose Isn’t Feeling Great
September 1st, 2013
Betsy Rose did eat some today – more so if I’d hold her food or sit next to her. Her temp is fine and she is drinking. In fact, her urine looks better than ever. She is munching on alfalfa too. If she gets worse, the vet will be called out. Otherwise, when Dr. Julia comes out on Tuesday, we’ll have her examine Betsy Rose too and do some blood work.
Another thing – Betsy Rose may be sore. These past few days, she’s used muscles she hasn’t used in a long time in the process of getting up and down.
This morning, she laid down in her stall, blind side up, and we have always had to help her get up when she goes down on that side. Well, she waited for me to get there and when I did, I told her to relax for help was on the way (waiting for Bob). She gave me that look (step back and just watch me!) and whinnied and the next thing I know, she’s on her front knees with her butt in the air and then she hopped her front end up! She shook herself off and seemed to beam! So – another major milestone today!

Buttercup – all grown up!
A trip down memory lane and an update on Buttercup!
Buttercup was a nurse mare baby (TB} that came to us at just under 2 weeks old, unhandled, in 2008. Just a few days after Aaleyah Belle and Momma Sue arrived.

Aug 28, 2012: Bouie, Frodo, Lily, Ebony, Sisco, Starlight, Sienna & Legacy
Bouie and Frodo made a break out yesterday – the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. LOL
Little Lily and her mom, Ebony, also took off. Like any of these 4 really need to gain any weight. Frodo wanted all of the grass to himself so he tried to chase them off – hopefully he ran off some calories.
Sisco had SCC when he came to us months ago. But he is doing well. We’ve been able to give him many months of a happy life and hopefully many more years to come.
Another Beauty’s Haven horse that we brought to Beauty’s Haven from a horrible situation last year. She landed in the arms of an angel. Thank you Jordan! Starlight grazing.

Aug 29, 2013: Daisy & Baby Boo Update
Yesterday, the tumor on Daisy’s eyelid was debrided. Today, she started chemo injections on both tumors (left and right eyes). We hope to save both eyes but hopefully, at least one. If the left eyelid is removed, she will lose the eye. Daisy is handling everything well. She is only 3 – 4 years old and possibly pregnant. I’m sure she feels better with the huge mass gone. I’m not going to say she is going to be ok – only time will give us that answer. She is being a very brave girl and baby Boo is too. We are finalizing a foster home situation for them. Here at the rescue isn’t a good place for any pink skin animal – we have very little shade. I’m very sorry for what Daisy has had to endure – she should have received help when the issue first started. But we can’t go back in time – we can only enjoy the present and the future with her and with baby Boo. And we pray for healthy and long lives for both of them. I’m not sure when they will be released but I’ll update as I know more.

Another Milestone for Betsy Rose!
Tuesday, August 27th, 2013
“Good morning everybody! Guess what – guess what – guess what????? Me and Freckles slept in my stall last night – no sling!! I fell asleep listening to Freckles tell stories to the cute little baby donkey. It felt so good to lay all the way down and I slept really good! I still need a good brushing to get the shavings off of me. But now I’m hungry – here comes Mommy Theresa serving breakfast so I gotta go! Have a great day everyone!”
Our little Betsy Rose has crossed another milestone. She did well through the night. She laid down on her right side and got up fine (she’s blind in that eye). However, this morning around 5:15, she laid down on her left side (blind side up) and couldn’t get up on her own. She didn’t panic – just waited for us to help her. So, we’ll be doing some exercises for flexibility and teaching Betsy Rose to roll over on the right side which will allow her to get up. Oh, Freckles is still sleeping – I think she told stories most of the night to Baby Donk.
