In early 2013, we were contacted about a “very dangerous” six year old mare that may have been pregnant. The owner got her three months before. The mare had been at the trainer’s for about three weeks – they said she was “dangerous” and “needed to go” and if we didn’t take her, she would “go to big cats.” We made arrangements to meet a vet at the trainer’s the next day so the mare could be examined. I wanted to observe her with her owner, the trainer, and the vet, to learn as much as I could about her and to find out if she was pregnant.
The next day, when the vet was examining the mare, she looked a little concerned, but the vet was very patient with her. She was sedated in order to be palpated and we learned that she was not pregnant, thankfully.
We were told of inhumane things that had been done to her. She had been starved, beaten with a 2 x 4, and handled very roughly. We were told that she had an issue when in a small pen – that when you take off the lead, she becomes unmanageable – she will try to flee and take you out with her if you’re in her path. When someone walked past her stall, she lunged out and hit the person in the head – knocking them to the ground. The mare had attacked two people – one had to go to the hospital. Another person got kicked. The owner sent her to a trainer, but the mare didn’t do any better there. However, they said a couple of men got on her. I’m not sure what else happened, but the trainer wanted her gone. Like yesterday.
Based on what we were told, and what I observed, I think the mare was misunderstood. I think she may have been pushed too hard and too quickly when trying to get her under saddle – especially after the horrible life she had lived before the new owner got her. What I saw in her eyes was a beautiful soul behind a look shrouded by fear – but a longing for freedom from her past. I named her Gypsy. She arrived at the rescue the next day. Once unloaded, I took her into the quarantine paddock and rubbed on her neck and took her halter off while being reminded that she’s a bit nuts once the lead is off – I totally had forgotten all about that warning. However, she was absolutely fine.
I spend more time than the average person observing a horse when getting to know them but I learn quite a bit that way. I never went into Gypsy’s space looking for, or expecting, anything bad or negative to happen. I never felt intimidated or concerned. She seemed relaxed and comfortable.
The dentist did her teeth, without sedation, and she was great. She had a loose tooth that was pulled which likely, caused her discomfort – especially if she had a bit in her mouth. Doing a little massage on her, I learned she was sore in her left hip area. She likely had mental cobwebs from her past. She may have been told to do things she wasn’t comfortable with or just didn’t understand – maybe she was pushed too hard and too fast and her actions were misunderstood by humans. Perhaps, she tried to defend herself or flee when she was confused or felt threatened.
I’m a firm believer of groundwork and building a relationship of trust – it’s a foundation for everything else for the rest of a horse’s life. Gypsy needed good experiences and to be set up for win-win situations. Gypsy was smart and seemed to enjoy learning and interacting. We worked through, not around, any insecurities or fears she had. She wasn’t mean and I never felt that I was in danger. Gypsy never offered any resistance – she was honest and willing.
It’s always hard to let them go but this is what we do as a rescue. She now lives with her own adoptive family and is a happy girl. If people would only listen more to their animals, perhaps they could better understand them. Listening is just as important as whispering, in my opinion, and bonds that can be formed are rather amazing!

RED JOINS LIZ AT RAINBOW BRIDGE

After feeding breakfast to Red this morning, I told him that he was going on a journey to Rainbow Bridge where Liz went to yesterday – that she would be there waiting for him. I explained to him that once he got there, all of his discomfort would be gone. He was a wise older horse – you could just sense that he understood. He got brushed and I gave him some treats.
We started walking and he led me up Frosty’s Knoll to where it would be his final resting place. He grazed for a few minutes. The vet arrived and said hello. As the vet was preparing his solution, Red looked at me then looked to the sky and then looked all around and whinnied out to the others. He looked at me again with a beautiful calmness through bright eyes. I hugged him and reassured him once again that Liz would be there for him. He went very peacefully. He’s no longer in pain, but rejoicing, as he sees Liz and they cross together.
I think maybe Red leaving the day after Liz crossed is what she wanted – it gave her time on this side of the Bridge to gather up others that had gone before her that were waiting on her so that they could all reunite and reflect on their past and then once Red arrived, the family crossed together, leaving the past behind them. But I am absolutely positive that Liz will make sure that they all greet her other animals in the future when they get to the Bridge.
It is actually a very good feeling knowing that they are together and neither one of them are uncomfortable any longer. We will never forget them. They are both loved.

RED’S MASS – IT’S NOT GOOD

It’s been a very sad day. Our dear friend, Liz, passed this morning. She had been battling cancer. She was a strong and proud woman that loved animals to no end. I admired her courage and her strength, very much. We had promised her that Spirit, Penny, and Red would be taken care of which she was very grateful for.
Dr. Lugo came and took X-rays of the side of Red’s face today. The large mass is a tumor, and, unfortunately, infection has penetrated and eaten away at bone. Red will get TLC and be kept as comfortable as possible until tomorrow morning when he will join Liz at Rainbow Bridge. I choose to believe that she will be there waiting for him and that they will cross together. Then, a new beginning for them – they will run in green pastures with no more pain along with others that have gone before them. They will never, ever be forgotten.

Sisco’s Treatment – He Needs Help

Sisco came to us in 2013. A tumor (SCC) had been removed from beside his tail and, over the course of many weeks, Dr. Porter injected cisplatin. You can see the original tumor on Sisco’s page at https://www.facebook.com/Siscos-Story-277980622333541/ but its graphic. We knew the area could get worse again so we constantly monitor it. Sisco had done really well but recently the area did get worse. Today, the vet removed a good size chunk and injected cisplatin. Sisco is otherwise healthy and the vet feels confident that Sisco has many sunset years ahead of him. Sisco isn’t happy that he is on stall rest for a week and he will be a bit sore for a few days.
Sisco needs your help – I don’t know what the final cost is going to be after the next couple of follow ups but I know we need to help with $905 for today. And I know we have had a couple of other unexpected expenses come up. We will likely start a GoFundMe tomorrow after we put together some numbers and have them double checked. Anyone that knows me, knows that I have a hard time asking for donations, but it’s how the rescue survives and we are in a pinch. Donations are down and that seems to happen when I don’t post updates as often as I normally do. I’d post more updates but I’m busy caring for the horses. It’s a frustrating predicament.

A “Cricket Dance” natural! Baby Whiskers had a great night and was full of himself this morning! There must be something in his milk that we don’t know about!
We appreciate Kylie staying with him last night. We will be on babysitting duty for the next few nights – at least until he’s comfy. I hope his momma is relieved to see how well he is adjusting. Since Bob had his heart attack, things have been a bit more challenging, but thankfully, he’s slowly getting better. However, more of my time is spent working outside which leaves very little opportunity to be at the computer or in the office to plan fundraising activities and elicit donations which have gone down dramatically. We are a small grassroots organization which consists of Bob and I who work 24/7/365, plus a few very special volunteers. We normally have volunteer help approximately six hours a day, a few days a week. On some days, however, we have no help at all. So please believe me when I say, every vote helps!
