Meet the latest addition to the Beauty’s Haven family! This is Shadow. He’s not even a year old and had been living on the streets. Animal control tried to catch him for weeks but he was afraid of humans so they ended up darting him.
Shepherds Beyond Borders stepped up to take him into their program. One of our volunteers saw Shadow on Facebook the day after Duke passed away so unexpectedly and the rest is history! We picked up Shadow yesterday and we love him beyond measure! He’s awesome!
Thanks to the amazing generosity of another dear friend and supporter, our $2K Match Game has been increased to $3K! We thereby, now have a $3K Match Game on the table with $1715 still available in matching funds.

Trying to Stay Out of Trouble

CaryLou here! Since I have been up to no good, lately, Mommy Theresa gave me a job to do so I would stay out of trouble. She asked me to let you all know that the farrier is coming on Monday to work on some of my horsey friends. We hope to raise $495 so if anyone would like to help donate toward ‘Happy Feet,’ it would truly make our hearts sing!

Bria Update
A quick update on Bria, a 30 year old National Show Horse (Saddlebred / Arabian).
Bria was quite thin and had issues when she came to us, which included Cushings disease and degenerative suspensory ligament disease (DSLD). Unfortunately, there is no cure for DSLD – it progressively gets worse and, at some point, the horse’s quality of life declines to a point where the most humane thing is euthanasia.
Most of Bria’s days are pretty good – she hangs out with Little E. Sometimes she’ll prance over for a meal – she has a beautiful gait. But over the past couple of weeks, she became a bit more lame. We had x-rays done a few days ago and the findings weren’t a total surprise, but we’d hoped for better news. She has thin soles and coffin bone rotation in both front feet (the right being the worst) which isn’t new – this has been going on for quite awhile.
Bria gets supplements to help with her issues and comfort level. She wears Soft Ride boots which help quite a bit. We don’t know how long she will be with us, but hopefully, it will be for quite some time.

Duke – Forever in Our Hearts
It is with a heavy heart to inform you that my beloved companion and protector, a beautiful German Shepherd named Duke, has gone to Rainbow Bridge.
Duke suddenly collapsed on Monday (Dec 18th) morning for no apparent reason. I rushed him to Dr. Kristi Fox (Blue Run Veterinary Practice). She had just been at the farm this past Friday for a routine exam and vaccinations – she’s the only vet that Duke trusted.
Duke had a very aggressive, high-grade soft tissue sarcoma that most commonly affects the spleen and heart. It’s a highly malignant cancer that preys on blood vessels that can spread rapidly, causing tumors almost anywhere in the body. It’s commonly in the advanced stage before detection, making it virtually a silent killer. I learned that German Shepherds are at high risk for developing this type of cancer which sadly, took my Duke on Monday morning.
I was very blessed when Duke came into my life in 2012 and that he chose me to be his human. Wherever I was, he always wanted to be right there with me – always. He never wanted me out of his sight and he would protect me to no end. I know, without a doubt, that he will forever be watching over me.
I love you, Duke, always.
