I apologize for it taking so many days for me to get an update out. The days seem long in this horrible heat but they are over before I’m ready for them to be over. There just are not enough hours in a day.
We received word yesterday evening that Heart is sick with aspiration pneumonia. He is a very special horse that so many people love – especially his very own human family. He is being treated with medications but needs prayers. We picked Heart up in January 2010 – he’d been abandoned on hundreds of acres. He called out to us that day to not leave him behind and, of course, we didn’t. He touched the hearts of many – especially Sam. Sam had lost his heart horse months before and had been looking for another friend. But none that he met touched him like Heart did. They were meant for each other. I checked on Heart tonight and his fever is down. It’s been up and down for days – please pray that it stays down this time and that he is on the road to recovery. Please pray for Heart.

The girls keep us laughing. They are really cute together. Today Domino took a little nap in the birthing stall with Lacey and Dora. Lacey is much more comfortable with Domino being around. Little Domino has no fear and is like a shadow. She’s been desensitized to just about everything.
Like his momma, Reva, Morning Star is stunning. Morning Star was born here almost 2 years ago. It’s time for him to get some training.
It took some time and coaxing to get him loaded but he got on, made the trip well, and has settled in at his foster home – this was his first time on a trailer.
Welcome home Baby Ray! He and Morning Star switched places at the foster home – Morning Star needs to learn a few things so Jenna will be working with him for awhile. He is going to love the one on one attention I know Jenna will be giving him. And he’ll be enjoying shade we are lacking here!
Indy was happy to see his friend and trotted around with Baby Ray to let everyone know Baby Ray was back. Indy is growing up too fast too! They are both very beautiful boys!

We are in need of a few things. It’s been awhile since I posted a needs list but here goes…
· Endure Fly Spray (flies are worse than every this year!)
· Disposable fly traps for the stalls and shelters (at least a dozen).
· Flymasks:
o Arabian short (2) and Arabian long (2)
o Horse short (4) and Horse long (2)
o Weanling (2)
o Horse extra large (2)
Note: Our preference to long nose masks are the Cashel long nose ones. Short masks work in Farnam Supermask II or Cashel brands. The Farnam ones with the double latch are great for some of our horses.
· Donations to help with hay (can be called directly into Larson’s at 867-8333 or Berrittini at 352-629-1447).
· Donations to help with vetting can be called directly into Peterson & Smith’s at 352-237-6151.
· Donations for fill sand – we have many areas that were recently washed out by the heavy rains.
· Donations to help with vaccinations.

Meet Rambo…
I got the little mini gelding here this afternoon – hand walked him here from his previous home. It’s hard to believe he is only 3 years young – he looked older before he got some grooming. It was another miserably hot and humid day and he was huffing and puffing and I noticed I didn’t see any sweat – we’ll have to check into this more. I took him into the tack room where it’s got AC and we got to work on him.
He was happy to be rid of the halter that was a bit tight on him. He may have clogged tear ducts.
It took awhile to get the sticky sharp burrs off of him. He was pretty good about standing still for a couple of hours. Terri worked on his tail and I worked on his mane. Bob kept him busy with forage.
Sharp thorns were all through his mane, tail, and forelock. When they’d itch him he’d rub on a fence post and they would scratch him causing irritation.
He felt better after his medicated bath. Most of the unhealthy thick coat is gone and tomorrow we’ll try to clip him again (the clippers broke today).
Rambo will have his feet done soon and Dr. Ryan will come out to check him out, do some blood work, and pull a coggins. When he is ready he will get his vaccinations and be wormed. The dentist will also be checking him out. I was told he has string halt but we’ll have to check into that more too – I didn’t see any symptoms today.
To everyone that is helping this little guy – thank you! It feels good knowing he won’t be baking in the sun another day – especially in a thick and matted coat. Nor does he have to stand in the driving rains we sometimes have. I guess horses get accustomed to living without shelter or shade but I just can’t imagine any animal baking in the hot sun all day long. Well, non-domesticated horses maybe – but not ones that we’ve made dependent up us humans to adequately provide for them.

BHFER Update 06/11/12

MoonShadow needs….
MoonShadow needs his own human! He is doing great. In less than 2 months he has come a long way! We’re very proud of him.
He’s very sweet and greets you at the gate. He has been staying in the large area around our home with free access to the shelter in the QT paddock. He really loves attention.

Also, Montana, a very nice QH, is still looking for a home too. He would love to be someone’s trail horse and to have his own human. Montana is on the left.

Quick update – cuteness!

It’s been very busy here. We went to the high school awards ceremony last night and Katie got many. Graduation is tonight. We’re very proud of her and her accomplishments. This was taken at Baccalaureate.
Jean has been here since Sunday to hold the fort down – she’ll be going home today. Marie and Lynda will be here tonight to babysit while we are at graduation. We appreciate all of our volunteers – we are very blessed to have such wonderful people in our lives!

Celebration Success & Baby Update!
There was just over $1500 of much needed funds raised at the Celebration! That’s a heck of a fundraiser! J What a great effort on everyone’s part and, again, we can’t thank everyone enough that helped to make this event a success!
I want to share the below pictures to end the day on a smile.
“Mommy Theresa – I know where my milk comes from – it comes from that room in there where you are now taking my picture from! I do see you! Humans go in there all the time and they come out with food – you’re in there now so I’d like another bottle, ok?”
Domino and Dora making friends. Girl talk? Actually, I think Dora was trying to convince Domino that milk does not come from behind that feed room door! Today Domino spent some time with Peggy Sue. And she had some play time with Dora. It’s important that orphans learn to be horses too. Lacey is good with Domino but she did pin her ears and push Domino off a bit a couple of days with her teeth showing so we’re very careful to not leave them without supervision.
Dora’s legs are getting better each day!

BHFER Celebration of Life
I know I’m days late getting this update out and I apologize – I have had personal things come up that required attention and the number of requests for help for others horses has been great and has taken much time. I do need to share info about these other horses in need but will do so in a separate email tomorrow. Katie’s surgery took up much of the day today. She did well but she will have to get used to being right handed for several weeks (she’s left handed and it’s her left shoulder that was operated on). I am pecking at the keyboard without the use of two right hand fingers. I’m a bit slow at it but at least I’m pecking so no complaints! My trip to the do the doctor’s office today after Katie went into surgery, along with additional x-rays, brought good news – only one fracture vs. two.
We had a great time at the Celebration of Life – it’s wonderful to see familiar faces and to meet new people!
Gary brought HighTower with him for a training demo. It was so good to see HighTower – he is beautiful and seems to love what he’s doing! Gary trains some of our horses and does a great job – visit his Facebook page at Quest Horsemanship!
The amount of time and work that Jenny put into putting the Celebration together, with help from others, was enormous and we can’t thank everyone enough. And many people took time out of their busy life schedules to attend – some from 1000+ miles away! We are very blessed in many ways. To all that donated time, funds, raffle items, etc. – thank you! Our sincerest gratitude goes out to everyone.
Domino got lots of attention – she’s doing well.
A year in review – a tribute to those that have crossed Rainbow Bridge and talk of dreams and hope for the future – there is no way I could say what I wanted to in a short period of time. Nor can I say how deeply we appreciate everyone and their support.
I don’t want to end this update without a thank you to those that have given their lives so that we may be free – the meaning of Memorial Day. May we all always honor and recognize the sacrifice they made as well as the sacrifices of their families. And throughout history our precious equine have been there to help mankind – be it on the battlefield or in rehabilitation programs for those injured while serving their country.

Smarty Pants – We love you, always!
BHFER Update 05/25/12
So tomorrow we start the weekend in preparation for our Celebration of Life Day on Sunday. We look forward to seeing old friends and to making new ones. And I think I’ll start right now – introducing one of our most recent babies to those that haven’t met her yet. This is 3 week old Dora – her mom Lacey was a rescue that came to us pregnant with Dora and a 3 month old baby (Lexie) on her side. Dora is now enjoying time outside and the exercise is helping her windswept legs. She is a stunning baby ad very curious. She is a true blessing and loves attention.
And our latest arrival is baby donkey Domino. Born on the evening of May 22nd – her mother rejected her and she couldn’t nurse. We had Dr. Ryan run her plasma and she is doing ok. She’s black with a white tummy – thus the name Domino! Here she is trying to figure out who Trixie is while Lady Jane and Alyse look on in the background.
And here she is challenging a garden hose – it was hilarious! Look at those long legs! Caring for an orphan takes a lot of time and money but it’s worth it! She gets feedings around the clock and the cost of milk replacer is outrageous! She is also on camera for us to see from our home.
Also this weekend at the Celebration we will be having cake in honor of our daughter’s graduation from high school – she’ll be a Gator next year! We are very proud of Katie and her accomplishments. We couldn’t have a party for her but we thought this would be a great way and opportunity to let her know how proud we are of her. This is Katie playing with Domino.
