Ok, so it’s another bittersweet day. Our little Indy went home with his adoptive mom today to live. He’s such a sweet boy and I’m going to miss him – I already do! For those that don’t know Indy’s story here is a link (https://www.bhfer.org/oldsite/pdf/blog/February_2011.pdf) to where you can read about it (and see pictures) in our Daily Blog. If you go to that link and follow the blog forward in time you’ll get the whole story. Short version: about 2 years ago we rescued a herd of 8 unhealthy horses that were literally living in a junkyard. Their water source was a manmade hole that collected not only rain but anything that ran off into it from the ground – oil, antifreeze, etc. When we got involved the horses were thin and their needs had obviously been neglected.
In the herd were two pregnant mares and an Appaloosa stud we named Indy. Indy was ill and we lost him a few days after he came to us to colitis – it was very sad.
Two of the mini colt’s (we named them Tucker and Red) also had colitis and it was touch and go with them too but they came around and did well. One of the pregnant mare’s, a Percheron cross we named Faith, was pregnant with little Indy but her rehab went great. She put on much needed weight and lost her rescue coat and just blossomed. This is Faith at the junkyard in the first picture and in the second picture is Faith and her yearling colt (later named Goliath) at the junkyard and a another yearling – a filly (parents unknown).
This mini mare we named Glory – she was also pregnant when she came to us. We thought she would have her baby first and had her on foal watch. We were wrong with timing though. When she did have her baby it was a little boy we named Cloud Dancer.
Well, one morning our daughter was leaving to go to school and called me to the door on her way out – she asked me why there was one more horse in the house paddock – Faith had little Indy during the night! I named the baby “Indy’s Rising Son” – a tribute to his daddy whose fate was written before he even got here.
I can see Faith in little Indy – he has her eyes and disposition. He has his daddy’s blanket.
Two months after Indy was born I found Faith down and I knew it was bad. We took her to the hospital and she got better. She came home but then took a dive for the worse – she went septic. There was nothing that could be done for her. On July 4th, 2011 Faith crossed Rainbow Bridge. It was truly heartbreaking. And it left little Indy an orphan.
After Indy lost his mom our 43 year old pony, Casper, took to raising Indy. Casper was a wise one that had watched over many of our young ones. He always kept Indy in his sight and at night he slept outside of Indy’s stall on the side of the barn. Casper had been having liver problems. We found him on the morning of July 30th – it looked like he had just laid down and went to sleep – he had crossed Rainbow Bridge. Another very sad day. Casper had been part of our family years before we moved to where we are now (he was the first pony my daughter took lessons on) and when we moved here we had no idea that a couple of years into the future he would be 1 of 5 horses we would take in from a rescue in a case from Hillsborough County – he came to us skin and bones. But his rehab went great and he enjoyed his time with us – everyone loved Casper. But his crossing left Indy an orphan again. Casper was a hero to me and I’ll always be grateful to him.
But Indy did ok – he was doted on by humans and became good friends with Baby Ray and Baby Girl. I knew the day would come when he would find his own human family and I’m happy to report that he was adopted by Lisha – a good friend of the rescue. Back in 2011 when we rescued the “junkyard” horses Lisha adopted Faith’s colt (now a gelding) and nicknamed him Gilly (for Goliath). So Indy will be living with his ½ brother too! Indy will grow up and be Lisha’s daughter’s horse. It is a perfect time for him to start his groundwork. A solid foundation of groundwork is very important, IMO – and he’ll be learning and growing up with his own young lady. But it is so hard when they go. Bob tells me to smile for the camera and I find that very hard even though I know it is in Indy’s best interest. But he is only about an hour away and I know Lisha will give us updates and send pictures. As expected, he loaded into the trailer without any problems.
To everyone that helped care for this wonderful boy – thank you. God bless you and I know none of us will ever forget his mom and dad. Indy will always be part of our family. He is now at his “home away from home” and should he ever need to come back – we are here for him, always. And Lisha – thank you for giving him this opportunity. And thank you for the home you gave Gilly.
We have so many stories we could tell of the many horses we have helped. But everything we do – all the help we give to the horses is made possible by all of you. Thank you all for your support. For those that know me – you know how much I love the horses and helping them – it is my passion. And I am very blessed to have a family that supports that passion. And for those that don’t know me and have recently started following our posts – welcome! You will meet many wonderful people through our posts. God bless and I just got an update from Lisha – Indy has settled in and has even met the chickens! LOL – he’s going to have a blast!

Theresa

Indy Update
Indy has settled into his new home with his brother, Gilly. They spent about 10 minutes playing a little “get to know you who is going to be in charge” biting game. Lisha stopped it and said she will put a mare in with them tomorrow to help them sort it out. She says their personalities are the same. Indy loves to pickup and play with anything – lead rope, cell phone, grooming stuff, etc. I’m glad Gully and Indy are together. I have to say I know Faith and Indy Sr. are watching over them and are very proud. It’s a the start of a whole new life for Indy. I’m happy for him but I feel a really big void here as will our volunteers, I’m sure. L
Thank you Lisha for giving Indy a home with his brother – we’ll be looking forward to updates!
Sincerely,
Theresa

Another trip down memory lane…
12/13/2012
Another trip down memory lane… January 28th, 2010. I got a call about a horse that had been abandoned on a huge parcel of property – the grass was dormant. An adjoining neighbor had been tossing hay over to the horse for months and luckily there was a big old metal tin container that collected rainwater. But the neighbor was moving and the horse would have been all alone with nobody to know if he was sick, alive, or dead. Jenny went with me to meet the horse and gather facts from the neighbor and as we were getting ready to leave the horse followed and whinnied to us as if saying “Please wait! Don’t leave me here!” I went over and stroked his neck and the name “Heart” just came to me – I promised Heart we’d come back.
We brought him to the rescue – you couldn’t have found a sweeter or more appreciative horse. Thinking about him living on the empty property through the cold months with no blanket, no shelter, and very little hay made me very sad. Heart got strong over the next few months and was ready for a home. In early November he had an appointment to meet a human family when the unthinkable happened – he coliced! He was sick for many weeks – we didn’t know if he would make it. And we were not sure the family would wait for him or if they would want a horse that had coliced. But Heart improved and when he was better the family came to visit with him on December 5th. The son, Sam, had lost his horse over a year before and he had been looking for just the right horse. During the visit, Sam took Heart for a walk – you could see and almost feel the connection. It was very moving to say the least! Heart beamed and looked so proud to have this nice young many on his back!
Heart was going to have a home – they wanted to add him to their family! But then Heart got sick again and was not able to leave until December 31st but what a day that was – a day we all had been waiting for! It’s a day some senior horses never experience – going to a forever home where they will have their own human to love and care for them. But this grand senior horse finally had his forever home and his own boy to be his best friend! Who says story tales don’t exist and dreams don’t come true? Bah – humbug! We have proof they do!
Heart’s human family keeps us updated – this picture was taken last month. Sam still adores Heart and the feeling is mutual – Heart adores Sam. Sam’s sister, Emma, has her best friend Snicker’s. This is what we want for all of them – love, dedication, respect, full tummies, no worries – a forever loving home.
Thank you Laurie, Scott, Emma, and Sam!

Sachet – the vet is on the way
Sachet has us a bit worried. She’s been down a few times today – more than normal. The look on her face says she simply does not feel well. The vet is on the way now. I’ll update after he leaves. Please say a prayer for her.

BH Short update 12/12/12
Just a quick update tonight. Everyone is doing ok except we’re keeping an eye on Sachet, Little E, and Nevada. Sachet appeared to have a tummy ache this evening. We are also keeping an eye on Little E – he tends to get a gas colic with the change of weather. According to the vet there have been quite a few colic’s lately. Nevada was ouchy on his back left today but seems to be better tonight – no explanation for this. He’s just so thin. Watching him walk I have to wonder why he doesn’t fall over sometimes – it’s sad.
Some good news – we finally have Christmas lights up at the barn!
I snapped this picture of Peggy Sue today – she seemed to be posing for the camera. She’s so cute!

Update on The Christmas Trio, Hollie, Blackie and Donks!
December 12th, 2012
All of the Christmas Trio horses have names now. They have all settled in well and seem to just adore humans and appreciate every little thing done for them.
Nevada (means covered in snow).
Sachet.
Noelle.
Nevada’s right front foot is the one that had the roofing nail in it. The vet said Nevada was very lucky – it was embedded at an angle and location that missed everything it could have done some nasty damage to.
Sachet’s feet were not much better but no nail. Noelle’s back right has obviously sustained some sort of damage in the past. All three were good for Fabio and they seemed very pleased to have had their hooficures.
Dr. Bess did their teeth. The worst was Nevada’s – he’s youngest (5 yrs)! He had huge hooks and ramps. Dr. Bess was amazed at how bad his teeth were at his age. Sachet is about 13 years young and Noelle is about 15. I was told by the previous owner that Noelle was a real head tosser. With, or without, a bit in her mouth it would be easy to understand possibly why. She had lose teeth! Dr. Bess pulled one and will be checking the other the next time she comes or sooner if we notice any issues.
Blackie had visitors on Saturday – he has an angel! Thank you Melissa for helping him and for his gifts – he really feels special and sends a big “Thank you!” and says he wants you to come back soon to groom him and just spend time with him.
How sweet of a face is this? VERY sweet! Hollie visits with the young ones every morning. Dora and Starbuck are in the background. Hollie is doing very well. She is moving better and she’s gained some much needed weight and muscle. We do believe she has Cushing’s disease.
I had to share this. Here is Penelope taking a roll in the sand followed by Penny taking a roll in the sand! Baby donkey see – baby donkey do!
This is Beauty wanting to know where her treat is and when Santa is coming. LOL!
Hopefully tomorrow each of the horses is going to share with me what they want for Christmas and I’ll share with all of you! It’s hard to believe another year is coming to an end soon – it seems each year goes by faster. God bless and have a great night. Hopefully I’ll be able to post again tomorrow!
PS – current bids: Christmas Decorative Runner is at $70. The necklace is at $70. The Zenyatta and Baby plushie is at $40.

Christmas Trio & Hollie’s Weekend
This was last night’s update (12/10/12) but my Internet went down. Just got it back up.
The Christmas trio got lots of attention over the weekend. I had planned on posting a detailed update tonight but I will have to wait until tomorrow – I’m beat and need to call it a day early. But here are a few pictures and I’ll post more tomorrow.
The trio seems very appreciative of everything done for them. In a few weeks they’ll be filled out and looking even more beautiful.
Hollie is doing very well. She has been exploring the main paddock and meeting new friends.
Have a good night!

Theresa
