We lost Betsy Rose a year ago today. I rejoice for the miracle she was and that I was blessed to be part of her life. It would be wonderful to hear from all of you about how you remember Betsy Rose.

Betsy Rose was much more than that one special horse that comes into your life – she was a teacher, friend, comic, helper, healer and a a hero. The day we met Betsy, she lay dying on the ground where she had gone down days before, discarded like trash. She had withered away to nothing but skin on bones.

Even though euthanasia was recommended, I sensed a great force within Betsy Rose – it was the same force that enabled me to overcome the odds when I was told that I would never walk again. It’s a force, when coupled with faith and believing, that can enable us to do the impossible.

She clearly had purpose and was holding out for the chance at a miracle, a miracle which a higher power absolutely knew would come.

Based on my personal experience, I knew Betsy’s rehabilitation would be absolutely physically and mentally demanding. It was going to be a long road to recovery but I believed in her and promised her that we would do everything possible to make all of her tomorrows everything her past should have been. And with that promise, we ventured into a realm of supernatural wonder. Without hesitation, she led the way for us to accomplish what should have been impossible.

Betsy and I had an unwavering bond of trust and love – she communicated very clearly. We both believed in the ability to overcome that which cannot be explained, and that faith can overcome fear. She was the guiding force on an incredible journey that led us to realize that love truly is the most powerful spiritual force that exists. It knows no boundaries and overcomes all obstacles. Her love was rare, enduring, and eternal. Betsy Rose was, simply, the very essence of love and she was quite the inspiration. She turned tears of sadness into tears of joy; trials into triumphs; and in the darkness, she showed us there was light. Throughout her journey, she drew a following from all around the world – from every continent there were people who reached out to let us know they were behind us all of the way.

Betsy Rose recovered and we were blessed to have been given over four years with her. Sadly, we lost her on December 22nd, 2017, to a condition that prevented her from being able to swallow. Being the hero that she was, Betsy Rose understood what had come to be. The fierce determination to live life to its fullest that we once saw in her beautiful eyes was replaced by a sense of peace and acceptance. I believe that Betsy knew that this peace and acceptance would help us make the heartbreaking decision to let her go to Rainbow Bridge. That was the last and greatest gift of love we could give to her in this realm.

Betsy Rose was angelic and captivated countless hearts from around the world. There is simply no way to measure the love this little pony generated amongst people far and wide, just as there is no way to describe the devastation of losing her. Her perseverance, determination, and courage to never give up were beyond measure and she led many to believe. And to this day, we still believe. Betsy Rose will always be in our hearts and she will never be forgotten. Her spirit will continue to be our guiding force and her legacy will live on through our work and through others that she inspired. Her mission had been accomplished and we will forever be indebted to this little mare with the flaxen mane who taught us to believe.

To place your horse’s need for you to let her leave her failing body above your need to keep her with you – that – is the greatest and purest love. ~ Cynthia Garrett

THE STOCKINGS WERE HUNG ~?

‘Twas the week before Christmas, when all through the farm,
All the equines were stirring, even those in the barn.
The stockings were hung on the stalls with great care,
In hope that St. Nicholas soon would be there.
The horses were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of presents danced in their heads.
The equines are hoping to find lots of fine treats
But the wish at the moment is to take care of their needs.
Rotational Wormer Kits are a must at the farm,
To keep our equines healthy and free from all harm.
Our prayers will be answered if our wishes are fulfilled
And our Velvet Nosers, of course, will be totally thrilled.
Please consider a donation in this season of good cheer,
Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year!

God bless us, everyone!

SANTAS NEEDED!

Beauty’s Haven Farm and Equine Rescue, Inc., is participating in #GivingTuesday, a global giving movement which connects diverse groups of individuals, communities and organizations throughout the world for one common purpose: to celebrate and encourage giving. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday will kick off the charitable season on November 27, 2018, when many focus upon their holiday and year-end giving.

Beauty’s Haven is a grassroots organization whose mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home horses in need. We provide lifelong sanctuary to many horses with special needs and the animals here provide comfort and healing to humans suffering from autism, PTSD and depression, as well as mental and emotional challenges.

We would be very grateful if you will consider making a donation to our organization as part of your year-end giving.

Horse rescue is not merely the act of saving a horse in dire need. Once a horse is rescued, initial vetting and rehabilitation is costly. After a horse completes rehab, the expenses incurred in caring for that horse do not disappear. We must, thereby, depend upon the generosity of our amazing village of supporters, including volunteers, to help ensure that the overall health and well-being of each and every member of our herd is fulfilled. This can be done not only by making a tax-deductible donation and volunteering, but by sharing information about us with family and friends, cross-posting on social media, holding fundraisers, etc. Beauty’s Haven receives no federal, state, or local government funding and operates solely from donations.

In order to provide a safe environment for horses in our care as well as for the humans who tend to their daily needs, we must maintain the infrastructure of the farm as well as the equipment used to do so. This requires ongoing maintenance and repairs of golf carts, a UTV, trailers, the rescue’s truck and SUV, a mower, tractor and additional equipment. There are fences, gates, barn doors, windows and gutters that need to be replaced and/or repaired. Batteries in one of the golf carts need to be replaced. The farm tractor is now in the repair shop and requires $1500 of repairs to get it to the point where we can use it to unload and move large 700-pound bales of hay. The cost to get it fully repaired (fixing the bush hog/mowing deck, PTO, replace fluids, etc.) is another $3400. The windshield of the UTV must be replaced due to damage caused by sand that continually blows across the paddocks which makes it difficult for one to see. The installation of wipers on the UTV would be yet another much needed and most important safety feature.

One of the costliest, time consuming, and frustrating issues during the past year has been the zero-turn mower constantly breaking down and having to go to the repair shop. It is at the age when it needs to be retired and replaced. The mower is used to mow almost 18 acres of pasture as well as drag 10 acres on a weekly basis, year-round. Over the past few years, a wonderful friend has graciously performed this task but he will be retiring after the new year and Theresa and Bob will be assuming the task of mowing/dragging. We conducted an exhaustive research and found a highly rated mower with a great warranty plan that is built to withstand the rough terrain and environment at the farm. And, most importantly, it is ergonomically designed to be much less physically taxing on the humans who use it. Procuring a mower at this time is the right thing to do – the company is offering us a very good discount but we cannot make this happen without the help (we still need $10K to purchase it) of supporters. We have applied for grants to help with this, but have not as yet, been successful in our quest. The procurement of the mower would truly be a godsend to both horses and humans alike.

Taking all of these needs into consideration, our fundraising goal for #GivingTuesday 2018 and our year-end campaign, is $20,000.

On Tuesday, November 27th, starting at 8 am ET (5 am PT), Facebook, in partnership with PayPal, will match donations up to $7 million made to nonprofits via Facebook. Donations will be matched dollar for dollar on a first-come, first-served basis until the $7 million in donations is reached or at 8 pm ET (11:59 pm PT) on November 27th. Please click HERE to make your tax deductible donation to our ‘BELIEVE’ fundraiser which will be counted towards the match game. If you are not a member of Facebook, donations to our #GivingTuesday campaign may be forwarded via our WEBSITE or PayPal.Me. Contributions may also be submitted via our GOFUNDME page or via our PayPal address: bhfer@earthlink.net. Our goal is quite substantial, but the funds are desperately needed. We’ve seen miracles happen and we believe – with your help – we can achieve!

As we near the end of 2018, it is difficult to believe that it is almost one year since our beloved Betsy Rose crossed Rainbow Bridge, and not a day goes by when we do not think of our precious little mare with the flaxen mane. Betsy was adored by countless people throughout the world. She inspired others to ‘BELIEVE’ and to never give up regardless of the obstacles that lay in their path. Betsy Rose was so very thankful for the love and support that she and her equine friends received from each and every one of you who accompanied her on her remarkable journey. Like Betsy, we, too, are so very grateful to our wonderful little village of supporters who have allowed Beauty’s Haven to continue its most important mission of granting horses and other precious beings, a second chance at life and promising each, that all of their tomorrows will be everything that their past should have been.

Beauty’s Haven Farm and Equine Rescue, a place where ‘Life begins, again!’
Thank you all, from the bottom of our hearts.

Mishka, has had a few bumpy weeks between dealing with allergies to no-see-um’s and experiencing front right foot lameness. To help with allergies, he was gifted supplements, a flymask with ears, and a really nice flysheet and neck cover that’s cool, soft, and doesn’t weigh a ton – he’s huge (2000 lbs) and to get one over him is truly, quite a task!

When Mishka became lame a few weeks ago, it was thought to be an abscess. We moved him to a small paddock by the barn and his foot was treated many times to try to draw out an abscess. We weren’t making progress and Mishka wasn’t happy being away from his friends so Dr. Cardona came out and did x-rays. The results were not great, but they could have been worse. Mishka has side-bone in both front feet which is not uncommon in draft horses. There is a slight rotation in both, his sole’s are a bit thin, and there was a suspected gas pocket in the right foot.

Once we had the x-rays, coupled with recommendations from Dr. Cardona, we called Jason Wayne Hunter (Back to Basics Equine Podiatry) to help Mishka. When Jason started on Mishka’s right foot, an abscess at the toe opened up and when Jason began working on the left foot, another abscess at that toe opened up! Mishka experienced immediate relief! Jason put wraps on both feet and Mishka felt so much better now that he was able to go back out with his friends! This made us all very happy! We’re very appreciative of Jason, his work, and his patience with Mishka. And it was great to see Kyra (she used to be a vet tech with Dr. Ted) again – we appreciate her patience and kindness to Mishka too! Many thanks to both Jason and Kyra! Jason’s Facebook page is ‘Back To Basics Equine Podiatry.’ Now that Mishka is on track to getting better, we really need to reach out for help ($425) to cover his vet bill, x-rays, podiatry needs, etc.

Whenever one issue is resolved, however, another seems to pop up as in the case of Warrior. Dr. Julia was here earlier in the week to treat our precious little guy’s ears which are covered with oozing blisters and nodules due to his constantly being bitten by flies and gnats. I now spend a great deal of time daily, cleaning and treating his ears while trying to discourage him from rubbing on anything in sight to relieve his ‘itchies.’ I have not as yet received a bill from Dr. Julia but that is yet another forthcoming expense.

In addition, the farrier will be at Beauty’s Haven today as well as on Monday, for another round of hooficures and once again, Bob will be making our weekly hay run this afternoon which, like last week, will cost another $900. As donations have been down considerably, I am beside myself with worry but thankfully, two wonderful friends and supporters have joined forces and are offering a MATCH GAME to assist with our many needs! All donations up to $325 will be matched dollar for dollar! If you would like to participate in the Match Game, there are many ways in which to contribute. You may forward your contribution via our PayPal address: bhfer@earthlink.net, via theDONATE page on our website or via PayPal Me. If donating via PayPal, please designate your donation to ‘MATCH GAME.’ If you select the tab, ‘Send Money to Friends or Family,’ no fees will be deducted from your contribution. All donations are tax deductible and no amount is ever too small.

Thank you, all, so very much, for your love and support!

Recent tests have determined that Elyza Rose is Insulin Resistant with Cushings Disease. Her vet bill was $255 and her medication was $125. We are therefore, offering a very special fundraiser to help our sweet Elyza Rose.

Please consider a donation and receive a chance to win a gift of your choice. For each donation of $5, the contributors’s name will be entered in a drawing for either a Betsy Rose Coffee Mug or Tote Bag. A winning name will be selected on Friday, November 2, 2018, at 9:00pm at Beauty‘s Haven Farm and Equine Rescue, Inc., which is located in Morriston, Florida.

There are many ways in which to contribute. All contributions are tax deductible and no contribution is ever too small.

On behalf of Elyza Rose, thank you all so very much!

Introducing Yertle, one of our latest rescues that was found in one of our paddocks.

“All mine!” Yertle cried. “Oh, the things I now rule! I’m king of the ‘horses!’ And I’m king of a mule!” ~ Dr. Seuss

Needless to say, Yertle was not king of the horses for very long! We took him down the road to a safe pasture with a small pond as he surely, would have been trampled by the horses had he remained in the paddock.

“Mommy Theresa if you look at the time on your phone, I’ll bet it’s about a minute before lunchtime. That’s just enough time for you to get my lunch and be back here on time for the noon delivery!” Little E is one smart little horse!

Betsy Rose always enjoyed grazing in the morning sun. What a perfect day it was! We will forever be thankful for the time we had with her.

JoJo here! I’m kinda sad today because Auntie Jeanne told me that we have received very few orders in our Giving Bean Fundraiser which would help all my friends and me here at Beauty‘s Haven.

Auntie Jeanne told me that she just received her order of Giving Bean Coffee and it tastes and smells so good because it is so fresh.

Giving Bean ships online coffee orders the same day they are roasted so your fresh roasts arrive at your door in only 1-3 days from roasting date. It remains ‘fresh,’ with proper care, and is fresher than 99.999% of coffee available on gourmet coffee shelves at fine grocers, and even in fine coffee shops. Freshness counts in coffee, just as it does with breads, fine pastries and so many other foods.

Giving Bean also offers a fine assortment of Teas, Cocoa, Biscotti and Shortbread, all of which make wonderful holiday gifts.

Please consider placing an order to help Beauty‘s Haven. Our rescue will receive twenty five percent of every order placed. Just click HERE to place your order!

Thank you all so very much! Mommy Theresa always tells me that it ‘Takes a Village’ and that our ‘Little Village’ is always there for us which truly makes my heart sing!

Gotta go now! Jazzy is waiting!

Have a good week!

Love,
JoJo

We spent much of yesterday preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Michael but thankfully, we did not receive the brunt of the storm. We had a few periods of high rain, heavy winds and some erosion.

Please keep those who were affected by the ravages of the hurricane, in your thoughts and prayers.

We do need to make a hay run, however, as we only have enough hay to last for two days.

We need a ton of 3 string orchard hay bales at $600 a ton and three 1/2 pasture bales at $300 each, which will go under the large shelters where the horses will stay during the heavy rains.
