The match game was completed – God bless and thank you everyone! Gypsy arrived late this evening. She has settled in and seems to be curious about everything. What a sweet girl she is! I was told she has coliced in the past so we’ll be keeping a close eye on her. She has pooped, she’s drinking, and she adores her hay.

That shroud of fear has started to fade and she does have a beautiful soul that is already starting to shine through. Someday soon I hope she will be free from the horrible memories of her past. She will never be beaten with a 2 x 4 or anything of the sort again. She is already loved.

It took her a little bit to realize the shelter wasn’t going to eat her up. I think she’ll be having some new experiences here.

Gypsy has been given the opportunity to start her life over again – without worry or fear. I’ll be spending some time with her to get to better know her over the next several days. Hopefully, we’ll figure out whatever issues she has and get to working on them.

Thank you all so very much for making it possible for Gypsy to have this opportunity.

Sincerely,
Theresa

Yesterday I was contacted by the owner of a 6 yr old Saddlebred that I was told may be pregnant. The mare is at a trainer’s – they say she is “very dangerous” and “needs to go” and if we don’t take her she will go to big cats. I contacted a vet and made arrangements to meet him today so he could examine the mare. I wanted to observe her and learn as much as I could about her. Jenny said she would go with me so off we went this morning to meet this mare. It was an absolutely beautiful day. When I first saw the mare running today, an incredible feeling innocence came over me.

She moved beautifully and an old Fleetwood Mac song immediately came to mind (I still can’t get it out of my head!) – Gypsy. I didn’t know what her name was but in my mind it was Gypsy. So, meet Gypsy!

The Mare Going to Big Cats

While she looked anxious and concerned, the vet was very patient with her, she behaved well. She was sedated in order to be palpated – the good news is that she is not pregnant but the vet thinks she will soon be ovulating.

We were told of inhumane things done to the mare before the current owner took her in about 3 months ago – she has been at a trainers for the last 3 weeks. She had been starved, beaten repeatedly with a 2 x 4, and handled very roughly. I asked question after question. It was explained that she has issue when confined in a stall or small pen – that she is ok until you take off the lead rope at which time she becomes unmanageable. They said that once the lead is off she will try to flee and take you out with her if you’re in her path. When she was in a stall at the owner’s barn someone walked past her stall and she lunged out and hit the human in the head – knocking her over. I was told the mare had also attacked two people – one had to go to the hospital.  Another person got kicked. They decided to send her to a trainer.

image0133

Based on what I was told, and what I observed today, I think this mare is just misunderstood.  I think she has been pushed too hard too quick in trying to get her under saddle – especially after the horrible life she led before her current owner got her. What I saw in her eyes was a beautiful soul behind a look that is shrouded by fear – but a longing for freedom from her past.

image0101

Her past is ugly – humans have molded her into the mare she is today. I’m told she has papers (but the previous owner wouldn’t give them up) and is a Saddlebred but I think there is some Arabian in her too. We’d like to help her but in order to do that we need help from others – she needs sponsors. At this time we are asking for pledges to help her. If anyone would like to help sponsor her please email me and put “GYPSY” in the subject line. Time is of the essence. Donations are tax deductible and no amount is too small but again, at this time, we are looking for pledges. Once (if) we know we have enough support we will ask that pledges be turned into donations. We’d like to get her here, safe, as soon as possible.

Thank you.
Theresa

Just got back to the rescue about an hour ago from meeting the “dangerous” mare – it’s been a long day. The mare (I’m told she is a Saddlebred) needs help – I will post more in a few minutes – I have a couple of things I must take care of and then I’ll be back to post more about her.

We are this mare’s last hope. I was told she is dangerous and would go to big cats – I’ve been promised a little time to see if we can help her. She is sedated in this picture – the vet palpated her and determined that she is not pregnant. Whew!

Theresa

Solace wasn’t feeling very well this morning. Blood tests didn’t show anything – the results were all good. His temp was up much of the day but is finally down to normal. We will keep monitoring him and if he gets worse I’m to call Dr. Ryan. Please keep him in your prayers.

This is Sisco. He had a tumor removed a few weeks ago – squamous cell carcinoma.  The site was injected with cisplatin and cream is being applied daily – he is doing great.  He will need another chemo treatment on about 4 weeks.  If we win first place in the Elder Ford of Tampa contest it would cover the cost of his next treatment.  Please vote for us and ask friends and family to also vote.  Thank you!

PLEASE help us to find a good home for Sunset – she really needs to go somewhere with plenty of shade ASAP. Sunset is a 25 yr young former PMU mare who is in need of a forever home. She has a wonderful, sweet personality. She needs to go somewhere cooler or with plenty of shade as she struggles in the heat – have very little shade. If you are interested in adopting Sunset please e-mail Melissa at bhfer.melissa. Adoption fee will be waived to approved home.

The first bracelet, made by Lisa Austin of Crazy4ponytails, is made from the hair of Solace!  The minimum bid was $40 and bidding increments are $5. B idding will end 3-3-13!  All proceeds will go directly to helping the horses!  Current Bid: $200!!

We are still in need of Arabian, Horse, and Large Horse size double Velcro flymasks. And we need milk thistle – many of the horses here get this. We usually get this from The Healing Barn – if you would like to help with this please let me know. Ideally, we would order the 11 lb. container.  And usually, when ordered and being shipped to us, a discount is given.

Calling it a day a bit early – going to meet a mare (possibly pregnant) in the morning that I’m told will be fed to big cats if a home isn’t found. Thank you all for your continued support – have a great night!

Theresa

Solace had a gas colic last night but is now passing gas and poop.  He’s drinking but has no appetite and his temp is up a bit.  He still has the snots now and then.

Please keep him in your prayers.  I will try to post a video of him on YouTube later today.

It’s going to be a VERY busy day here but I’ll update when I can.  Have a great day everyone!

Theresa

Some of you may remember Joy? She is a Palomino mare that we took in from the July 2010 Naples case. She was pregnant and lost her baby due to dystocia – we almost lost Joy. It was horrible and I never want to experience anything like that again. Joy is doing great and her human mom adores her! This is Joy with her new best friend Jon Jon.

Joy

Penny had been pestering the grown up horses to run and play but none wanted to – she’s so funny to watch. On Saturday it was really great to see Penny and Roxy playing – Roxy volunteers on Saturdays with her dad. I think Roxy wore Penny out!

Genesis

Genesis is doing great.

Sunset is adorable. We are still looking for a home for her – she does not do well here with so much sun and the dust that blows off the lime rock road is horrible. Temps go up and her breathing goes up. Please spread the word on her and help us to find her a home. We thought she was only going to be here for a short time for rehab (which is done) but the home didn’t work out. She needs sponsors to help pay for her care. Sunset is a retired PMU mare that was forced to endure a horrible job so humans could benefit. Here is a link to a video about the PMU industry – you can see the kind of life she lived is just horrible (and she’s had many babies, I’m sure). Lily trying to fly! Here is a link to a video of Bouie, Frodo, Lily, and Ebony playing “Tag – you’re it!” They are hysterical!

And here is Armani – as striking as ever! He’s a big boy and his human mom says “he is not only loved – he is adored!”

Sammi and Joy – Joy isn’t a baby anymore! These two are very lucky girls – they have a wonderful human mom that loves them very much! Here is a link to a video of them when Joy was just a couple of days old. [youtube http://youtube.com/w/?v=vrCu9m4XqKE] Enjoy!

And here is Hollie – all settle in at her new home. She is greatly missed here but it makes me feel really good knowing that she will be much more comfortable there – the heat here just did not agree with her. Her human mom says she’s a keeper and that her eyes are truly a pathway to her soul. I agree 100%! To think that her previous owners were still driving and riding her in the condition she was in before we picked her up is just sickening. We’ll update now and then on how she is doing. To everyone that cared about, and helped her, thank you.

Hollie

Seeing the horses in their new homes, reading their updates, it just helps so much. There is a lot of heartbreak in what we do but the successes are so uplifting and they remind us that we do make a difference. While we can’t save them all we do our best and help as many as we can. And we are very blessed to have the opportunity to help the horses – and if we didn’t have the support from others it wouldn’t be possible.

I hope everyone had a great weekend. It’s been pretty busy here. I am behind on emails so please, if you have written to me and I haven’t responded, I apologize but I hope to get to them in the next couple of days. Thank you for caring and for your continued support! We are still in need of flymasks (double Velcro latch), flyspray, detangler, and a few other items. We are also looking for sponsors for hay – just $13.30 will sponsor a bale of hay. In this load of hay there are 41 bales in a ton. If we can get enough sponsors for a ton we will then get $10 off which would almost buy one more bale. Every bit helps! If anyone would like to help we would appreciate it. Donations are tax deductible and very much appreciated!
